Abstract: The research rebuilds the role of the music bands into brazilian social life through analysis of an academic bibliography produced in several places in Brazil. The main focus, however, was to rebuild the origin of a music band formed in 1898 by Italian immigrants in interior of Sao Paulo, the Corpo Musicale "Umberto I" from Serra Negra town, and to point the importance of its musical activity to the members of italian community and to the town and to the region. This musical institution has been changed throughout the time, starting to accept Brazilian musicians in its staff, not only ones from Italy. It kept however a strong link with italian tradition, both through its repertoire and through the strong relation with the Societá de Mutua Assistenzia Fra Italiani". Its activities has been finished in 1942, when its possessions has been seized by Federal Government, inside the process of nationalization engined during the Second World War. "Umberto I" was responsible for formation of several generations of instrumental players and composers and teachers and conductors, contributing so to the transmission of musical knowledge because some musicians, belong to one same family, became reference to the music teaching in Serra Negra town, like the "Lugli", the "Dallaris", the "Lamaris", the "Mattedis" and the "Perondinis". After its end, the old components founded, in 1945, the musical corporation "Lira de Serra Negra" and, in 1957, the Musical Corporation "Renato Perondini". Actually the only one band in the town is "Lira de Serra Negra" that inherited the legacy of "Corpo Musicale Umberto I", including part of its collection of scores. It has been keeping in a unstopped way the presence of the Music into local community life since 1898, therefore it is contributing to learning of the new generations of instrumental players and to the formation of a public who appreciates the good music. / Mestrado / Educação, Sociedade, Politica e Cultura / Mestre em Educação

Socioeconomic Status, Instrumental Music Participation, and Middle School Student Achievement

Antmann, Michael 01 January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in growth on the reading and mathematics FCAT 2.0 across varying levels of instrumental music participation by both low- and high-socioeconomic status (SES) middle school students, and to determine whether or not there is a relationship between instrumental music participation and socioeconomic status. The differences between instrumental music participation groups were not found to be statistically significant for both the reading and mathematics FCAT 2.0 growth by high-SES status students, and for reading FCAT 2.0 growth by low-SES status students. The differences between groups were found to be significant for mathematics FCAT 2.0 growth by low-SES students, but a Tukey HSD post-hoc test found no significant differences between the individual groups. The study also found that high-SES students had a higher rate of instrumental music participation in sixth grade, and a lower attrition rate between sixth and seventh grade than the low-SES students.
