Estruturas musicais do samba-enredo / -

Yuri Prado Brandão de Souza 20 April 2018 (has links)
This research intends to demonstrate the main transformations of the music of the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro through the transcription, cataloging and analysis of its most recurrent melodic, harmonic and formal structures. The analyzed structures include those that I considered as characteristics of samba-enredo, which are used by a large number of composers from diverse epochs and stylistic tendencies. From their detailed study, I examine the presence of formularity in the composition process of the sambistas, which may be related both to the oral model of thinking and behavior that still exists in the samba schools and to the fact that samba-enredo is embedded in a capitalist logic that ranges from the cultural industry it takes part in (disc recording, radio and TV broadcasting) to the way of choosing the works that are presented in the carnival.

A edição digitalizada da obra, baseada no manuscrito de Almeida Prado e a composição de uma obra com base neste estudo fazem parte do trabalho / Abstract: The purpose of this research on Arcos Sonoros da Catedral Anton Bruckner - meditação sinfônica (1996) by the composer Almeida Prado is to present a reflection that is guided by three types of analysis: ¿ Structural: investigating materials and compositional techniques. ¿ Semiotic: understanding and interpreting expressive meanings present in the musical text. ¿ Comparative analysis: identifying similarities and approaches between this work of Almeida Prado and Bruckner symphonies. After a brief presentation about Almeida Prado and Bruckner¿s symphonies, as well as a review of the related literature, the research focuses on the gestures used by Almeida Prado throughout the work. The integration of the three analytical lines is constantly done so that the achieved results may provide wide view of each gesture present in the piece. This dissertation aimed to study the model of organization of timbres, Klangfarbenmelodie, proposed by the German composer Arnold Schoenberg in 1911 upon the publication of his book Harmonielehre and apply freely some results of this study of timbre organization in music composition. We begin by studying the guiding principles of this idea and briefly expose the scientific model known at the time for the study of timbre, presented by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1863. We also examine the idea of Klangfarbenmelodie through Schoeberg's own writings and other authors, contextualizing the research from a scientific and historical point of view. Then we analyze the work Farben op. 16 no. 3, also by Arnold Schoenberg, with respect to its orchestration and formal organization, using an analytical approach based on set theory. In the last chapter we analyze the compositions of authorship in the light of the assumptions brought by the analytical aspect of the research / Mestrado / Processos Criativos / Mestre em Música

Tempo Determination in the Choral Works of Francis Poulenc

Teal, Terri Denise 05 1900 (has links)
Though Poulenc marks choral compositions with metronomic indications, there are problems concerning tempo. The purpose of this paper is to determine guidelines for dealing with choral tempo. Chapter II relates biographical information pertinent to the study. Style Is examined In Chapter III, determining aspects that call tempo marks into question and influence tempo determination. In Chapter IV, the manner in which Poulenc uses tempo indications in the choral works is analysed and the relationship between form and tempo examined. Chapter V records Information bearing upon tempo from Poulenc's collaboration with conductors, as well as examining recordings of Poulenc's music in which he played or with which he expressed approval. Guidelines for determining tempo are stated in Chapter VI.

Analýza sepolker Jiřího Ignáce Linka / The analysis of sepolcri by Jiří Ignác Linek

Tříletý, Petr January 2016 (has links)
The author of the thesis wants to examine the applicability of the concept of galant style as presented by Robert Gjerdingen in his treatise Music in the Galant Style (2007). As a musical material which he wants to analyze by using the mentioned concept he chooses three extant sepolcros by a schoolmaster from Bakov nad Jizerou Jiří Ignác Linek (1725-1791). Further, he deals with a thesis by Eva Tomandlová (1934- 2010) written in the late 1950's that had these sepolcros as its subject. Thus, at presenting Gjerdingen's approach and its specific possibilities, the author can make use of comparison with a method which can be considered an exemplar of the prevailing analytical tradition. Formalisation mathématique, univers compositionnels et interprétation analytique chez Milton Babbitt et Iannis Xenakis / Mathematical Formalization, Compositional Universes and Analytical Interpretation in Works by Milton Babbitt and Iannis Xenakis

Schaub, Stéphan 18 December 2009 (has links)
This thesis explores the links between mathematical formalization, its implications in compositional practices, and its repercussions on the analytical interpretation. It is based on the study of Milton Babbitt’s Semi-Simple Variations for piano (1956), on Iannis Xenakis’ Nomos Alpha for violoncello (1965-1966), and on a selection of theoretical texts published by the composers around these two works. The argumentation is divided in three parts. The first studies the theoretical texts with the aim of extracting from them the components that are formalized (or result form formalization) as well as the indices pointing towards their implications in the compositional practices. These are then put into sharper view in the second part, through the reconstruction of the traces left by these components in the musical texts (“theoretical models”). This reconstruction is first conducted on the two main works considered before other works are considered. The theoretical models of two of them had until now remained unknown: Three Compositions for Piano by Babbitt (1947-1948) ; and Akrata for 16 winds (1964-1965) by Xenakis. The third part submits Semi-Simple Variations and Nomos Alpha to two analyses: one is aimed at the theoretical models, directly linked to the formal universes, the second examines the musical surfaces and at the way they articulate and/or contradict the elements observed in the models. While underlining the fundamental - though very different - role played by mathematical formalization in Babbitt’s and Xenakis’ compositional universes, the distance that separates the theoretical models from the musical surfaces brings one to consider the role of the former within the analytical enterprise as essentially heuristic. As traces of the composer’s thinking, the theoretical models may however suggest new approaches and deserve to be fully integrated in future research.

The Fantasias of John Dowland: An Analysis

Walker, William J. (William Jared) 08 1900 (has links)
In spite of an increasing interest in the analysis of Renaissance music by contemporary theorists, few analyses of lute music exist. It is hoped that this thesis will serve to open a new area of analysis to scholars of Renaissance music. Chapter I deals with the background information necessary for the analysis, including Dowland's biography, lute history, technique, and notation, and the practice of modality on the lute. An overview of Dowland's music, especially the solo lute music, ends the chapter. Chapter II traces the form and development of the fantasia and surveys Dowland's seven fantasias. In Chapters III-V, the works are divided according to mode and analyzed in terms of counterpoint, dissonance, motivic development and modality. Chapter VI provides concluding remarks.

An Investigation of Textural Activity and Its Hierarchical Structures in Selected Works by Krzysztof Penderecki

Daley, Paul B. (Paul Byron) 05 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on temporal aspects of the music of Krzysztof Penderecki and deals with these on the level of textural activity. The analyses are based on a referential idea called a "discrete sound event," defined as an occurrence of a sound or collection of sounds which, as a unit, is distinct from the surrounding texture. These sound events are then used to appraise textural activity from layer fluctuation and composite density. The pieces selected for applying these techniques are the Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, from 1960, the Fluorescences, from 1961, and the 1965 Capriccio for oboe and strings.
