Time fields : chamber concerto #3 for fifteen instruments / Time fields : chamber concerto #3 for fifteen instruments (2004)

Baker, Robert A., 1970- January 2004 (has links)
Time Fields: Chamber Concerto #3 for fifteen players (2004) is a composition for five woodwinds, three brass, one percussionist, piano, string quartet and double bass with an approximate duration of 14 minutes. This work addresses the nature of musical time and its role in the organisation of the large-scale structure of the piece. Four differing states of musical time, which I refer to as Temporal Textures (Static, Obscure, Temporal Counterpoint and Clear), are employed in particular alternations to form a single movement work in four distinct sections.

Formal structures in the solo keyboard music of J.C. Bach and their influence on Mozart

Goodchild, Meghan. January 2008 (has links)
During his lifetime, Johann Christian Bach (1739--1782) was considered the most famous musician of the Bach family throughout England and Europe. Although his music was highly regarded in the eighteenth century, little scholarly work has been undertaken on the historical and analytical aspects of his compositions. His keyboard compositions are valuable in tracing his musical development since this was the only genre that he wrote throughout his career in Berlin, Milan and London. Previous analyses of Bach's keyboard music have mainly focused on stylistic development, thus neglecting the importance of phrase and larger formal functions. / I adopt William Caplin's theory of formal functions to analyze Bach's solo keyboard sonatas: the Solo in A minor from Berlin (1750--55), three sonatas from the Milan collection (1755), six sonatas from London Op. 5 (1767), and six sonatas from London Op. 17 (1773--4). I demonstrate that Bach gradually refines phrase and thematic functions of the exposition of first-movement sonatas. I examine Bach's use of core technique and subordinate theme-like units in development sections and discuss the reasoning behind different recapitulation strategies. I also compare the sonata forms of the first movement to the second and third movements, and discuss other types of large-scale formal design (theme and variations, minuet and trio, and rondo). / Many sources indicate that Mozart was greatly influenced by Bach, but they remain vague in describing the type and extent of this influence. Building on previous melodic, motivic and stylistic studies, I draw important phrase-structural connections between the music of Bach and Mozart. I discuss the construction of Mozart's early piano pieces (KV 6 through K 284) and demonstrate that he adopts particular phrase-structural and thematic designs similar to pieces from Bach's Op. 5 and 17 collections. Through form functional analysis, I illustrate Bach's development of phrase and thematic structures and provide important phrase-structural evidence of his influence on the music of Mozart.

The six keyboard concertos and four symphonies by Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-78)

Leichty, David Herman January 1997 (has links)
The analysis of Arne's six keyboard concertos uses the 1981 Oxford University Press edition of the musical scores. This edition relies totally a set of separate printed on parts that was published by Harrison & Company of London in 1793, and is the earliest known extant material for the concertos; the autograph MSS scores of Arne's concertos are not extant. The analysis first deals with Arne's general structural process, then examines the formal structure of the works in more detail, with particular attention given to the utilization of ritornello format and the influence from the Torelli-Vivaldi tradition. A discussion of the concertos' residual Baroque characteristics as well as several galant traits is included. Considerable attention is given to Arne's excellence in melodic writing, as well as to his fondness for the interval of an octave and to a particular rhythmic kernel. Also included is an analysis of a discarded movement from Concerto No. 1.The analysis of Arne's four symphonies uses the 1973 Oxford University Press edition of the musical scores. This edition relies totally on the set of printed parts from the 1767 John Johnston [London] edition, and is the earliest known extant material for the symphonies; the autograph MSS scores of Arne's symphonies are likewise lost or destroyed. As with the concertos, the analysis of the symphonies first looks at Arne's general structural procedures, then treats individual musical forms, with significant attention given to sonata form. An examination of Arne's remnant Baroque characteristics is included. As with the concertos, a substantial portion of the analysis is given to Arne's melodic writing.A short biography of Arne is included. This chapter discusses other instrumental works of Arne, as well as his more important vocal works. / School of Music

Solo Violin in Gustav Mahler's Symphonic Works as a Musical Sign

Yang, Chaul 12 1900 (has links)
Noted for both vocal and symphonic output, Gustav Mahler's musical sophistication constantly puzzled scholars in the past decades. In his symphonic works, the mixed forms and styles in combination with the vocal influence make it abstruse for listeners to detect the meaning of the use of traditional instruments. The solo violin, which has an extensive history of appearing in symphonic compositions since the Baroque era, is an instance of a traditional instrument given an unusual function. For instance, Mahler's violin solos do not tend to showcase the virtuosity of the instrument as they normally do in orchestral music. In order to closely examine the role of the solo violin, I rely on aspects relating to introversive semiosis such as harmonies, rhythms, textures, phrase structures, and forms; then my focus shifts to extroversive semiosis, specifically to topics and contextual factors. By considering the violin as a musical sign, listeners can comprehend the instrument's structure, syntax, and ultimately the complex logic of Mahler's musical discourse.

S. Bach. / This research investigates compositional elements used by Villa-Lobos at Bachianas Brasileiras no 4 and how the elements of Brazilian music and those used by JS Bach are integrated. The organizational elements in its structure and its compositional unfolding are observed. Because Villa-Lobos uses a diffuse musical language, it is impossible to approach his grammar with one analytical tool only. For this reason, we make use of different theoretical tools to analyze the Bachianas Brasileiras no 4 for piano solo. Theoretical and analytical authors, such as Berry (1987), Lester (1989), Neumeyer & Tepping (1992) e Strauss (2013) are referred here. To address the possible use of rhetorical figures, such as those used by JS Bach, we consulted Bartel (1997). This study observes that, despite of Villa-Lobos’ and creative spirit, his mystic image as an intuitive composer, folklorist and wild, he was fully aware of the European compositional avant-garde techniques, and dialogued with those compositional currents.

Que acorde ponho aqui? / Which chord shoud I use here? : harmony, theoretical practices and study of tonal planes in popular music

Freitas, Sérgio Paulo Ribeiro de 12 June 2010 (has links)

- within the context of theoretical practices of tonal harmony, this study critically examines some potential answers attempting to explore different motivations, origins, contexts, conceptions, knowledge, arguments and justifications that, when intermixed, both discordant and accordant, stimulate argumentation and choice?making to answer these types of questions. The colloquial tone of the issue at hand reveals a web of intertwining topics with different formulations, branches, emphases, and approaches that are somewhat recurrent in the pedagogical, technical, theoretical, analytical, evaluative, and artistic areas of the discipline. From this web structure, the problem takes on a more bounded focus which might be described as follows: what are the possible choices, where are they, and on what criteria are they based, and how are related tonalities (tonal areas, regions) and main chords arranged in succession, which, purposely arranged in mean and large scale and referencing the accordance of the adjunct chords (means of preparation) and other pitches (adjacent notes, tensions, scales, modes, etc.), contribute to the execution of "structural functions" (relationships between harmonic function and the formal role of the segments) in a harmonic and tonal piece of music? The proposition accompanying this delineation is such that the art and the task of choosing and arranging chords in tonal planes in several conflicting measures and in the most varied forms does not depart from theoretical practices that attempt to define such knowledge and competence. These dynamic relationships of binding and unbinding between acts and actions of harmony and acts and actions according to the theory are considered a central issue. Chapters 1 through 6 deal with review, contextualization, identification, and detailed comparison of references; repertoire and theoretical and poetic memory; questioning and discussion regarding certain interpretative approaches on such subjects as: the diatonic basis of tonality, the functional attribution of chords and tonal areas, the inclusion of theoretical?normative non?diatonic chords, the altered means of preparation and third relations that involve chromatic transformations. Chapters 7 and 8 propose and evaluate a pre-analytical model for the comparative study of complex tonal planes. This deals with a para-musical tool aimed at experimentation, production, analysis, and review, which attempts to support the macro confrontation of final locations arranged in tonal works that, within the context of "tortuous" popular music, achieve their results by mixing certain diatonicisms / Doutorado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Doutor em Música

A autora acredita que este trabalho possa contribuir para o surgimento de novas reflexões, hipóteses, estudos e pesquisas no âmbito da pedagogia musical e do repertório contemporâneo e, principalmente, na formação e postura didática de futuros professores de música e musicalização / Abstract: The main objective of this research is to study three aleatory pieces by the composer from Pelotas/RS Luiz Carlos Lessa Vinholes: Instrução 61, for any four instruments (1961); Instrução 62, for keyboard instruments (1962); and Peça/Pessa para fazer Psiu/Xi, for mouthes (1979) and, from the analysis of this material, create pedagogical activities for use in musicalization classes with children from six to ten years old. This work has been developed from the following questions: How to stimulate the child's imagination and creativity? What kind of music or contemporary works would be appropriate for such purpose? The pieces by L. C. Vinholes are presented as possible answers to these questions, precisely because they are aleatory, do not require any knowledge of traditional music and, better yet, for using new codes and notation of easy reading and understanding. To prove this hypothesis, the researcher used the qualitative approach focusing on obtaining descriptive data through direct and interactive contact with the object of study situation. In the grounds, the main pedagogical approaches of the second half of the twentieth century were discussed in order to understand the educational assumptions of contemporary educators and contextualize the pieces by Vinholes in the educational scope. The paper also proposes the creation of a site for the preservation and dissemination of some aspects of the activities and work of L. C. Vinholes, as well as to make available the present research. The author believes that this work can contribute to the rise of a new thinking, assumptions, studies and researches in the field of music pedagogy and contemporary repertoire, especially in training and didactic/pedagogical attitude of teachers of music and musicalization / Doutorado / Doutor em Música

Abstract: This study has the goal of evaluating certain aspects that guided some of the main speculations in harmony in twentieth-century music. Among its objectives are: to point out the premisses and strategies that took part in each new harmonic territory, as well as to explore the use of harmonic matrixes as a compositional principle. At the same time we underline how compositional strategies relate by means of pitch manipulation, and their results in timbre and sonority. To achieve this, we chose composers that in some point made use of harmonic timbre and sound matter as a distinctive element in the compositional process. Among them stand: Claude Debussy, Arnold Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky, Edgard Varèse, Pierre Schaeffer, Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez. In Varèse's case, we justify his significant appearance by judging his relation to sound matter, and his own composition material, as pioneering in twentieth-century music. For this reason, an analysis of Intégrales became necessary, aiming at a closer approach to his musical idiom and his strategies for the writing of timbre. Besides the studies, we had as a result a series of works composed by the author in which the use of harmonic matrixes became a relevant feature in the compositional process, a sort of a guide to sonority. / Mestrado / Mestre em Música

Orientador: Ricardo Goldemberg / Anexos: 2 CD-ROM / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-15T15:27:49Z (GMT). This research had the main object to present a possibility of performing the Brazilian symphonic music formed by afro-Brazilian influences, very little explorered by our performers. For that, was chosen particularly the "Batuque" from Suite "Reisado do Pastoreio" composed by Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez, one of the Brazilian woks full of musical richness and recognition at the international environment. This research had as justification, the contribution for the enrichment of the Brazilian technical bibliography in performing practices and discography through two CDs which join the dissertation, once that there is a lack of support material for the study of this kind of music. The methodology, at first, has consisted of the reading of particularly bibliography about the genesis of the term batuque and the characteristics of the musical practices and the dances of the afro-Brazilian Negroes since the colonial period until their changes during the first decades of the twentieth century. After that a parallel was described between the composer's path and his musical production. At last one formal analysis was made of Lorenzo Fernandez's batuque and one performing and comparative analysis was made between our performance and two different others of this piece. The results of this research showed that the theoretical knowledges were applicable at the performance practice and the contribution for the greatest comprehension of music with afro-Brazilian influences; opening a new perspective for musical research besides making available useful material for teaching chamber music and orchestral music / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes
