Profiles in Courage: Practicing and Performing at Musical Open Mics and Scenes

This dissertation explores the social patterns and cultural layers of musical "open mics" in New York City. The study uses a qualitative approach which includes methods such as ethnography, in-depth interviewing, historical and discourse analyses focusing on open mics and the popular musicians who attend and perform them. Open mics, short for "open microphones," are public events that allow musicians to perform songs without a pre-planned, formal booking with a club or venue. Owing a historical and discursive connection to the folk hootenannies and jazz jam sessions of the past, these events have proliferated and spread considerably across the United States since the 1990s since their development, by name, in the late 1970s. Open mics not only reflect a do-it-yourself and participatory cultural ethos manifested with other recent expressive cultural activities, but also demonstrate a growing interstitial "musical third place" residing between private practicing and public performance. Musical open mics as musical third places provide musicians and singer/songwriters to network with other musicians, practice new musical compositions and play when other performance opportunities are not readily available. It provides a means for musicians to "hone their craft" in terms of performance methods and also construct musical identities in the almost exclusive company of other working singer/songwriters. This "backstage region" is thus framed and keyed by the musicians onto a continuum between two theoretical poles: performance practicing and practicing performance. Performance practicing as defined in this study frames a more performance-oriented display for musicians in locations called "closed open mics" or COMs. These settings, also residing on a theoretical continuum are socially more exclusive in terms of performance types, the aesthetic careers of the performers, the genres represented and the sociological makeup of the setting participants in general. OOMs or "open open mics," on the other hand, usually have a more fluid, diverse sociological composition of musical performers, performance types, and musical genres played and represented in these mainly weekly events. Closed open mics align into more homogeneous, isomorphic settings comprising "local open mic scenes" and open open mics remain more heterogeneous, socially inclusive, and unsettled as "pre-scenes."

Exploring the life orientation potential of secondary school musical productions : the case of The Green Crystal / Amanda Salomina Potgieter

The problem I investigated in this research is the extent to which participation in a secondary school musical production contributes curricularly and pedagogically towards equipping learners for meaningful and successful living in a rapidly changing and transforming society within a life skills education programme. The importance of creating a dialogic space where secondary school learners may practise life skills within the Life Orientation curriculum has been my main focus. My aim was to investigate and discuss the Life Orientation potential of the secondary school musical production as dialogic educative space for life skills attainment. I specifically employed a hybrid epistemology, namely constructivist hermeneutic phenomenology. In this qualitative study a small number of participants were interviewed individually and in focus groups because of their particular knowledge and lived experience regarding the research topic and the musical The Green Crystal as the chosen case study. This enabled me to construct and interpret their subjective reality and construct meaning within the particular social context of the secondary school musical production. The data I generated, coded and interpreted validate the notion that the secondary school musical production is a hybrid genre which is essentially a practise ground for life skills attainment through the media of music, movement and drama. It also emerged from the data that the secondary school musical production provides a dialogic and educative space to and for all participants to practise life skills within the subject Life Orientation. The participants indicated that their participation in the productions have been life-changing events. A notable contribution from the data was the confirmation that life skills learnt and practised during the musical production are transported into adult life. The life skills learnt through participation in a secondary school musical production are embedded in the memory of the participants and the lessons learnt purify over time. This thesis deals with an arts marketing with a focus on musical theater. The theoretical part defines basic elements of the marketing process, with the main emphasis placed on marketing mix and its specifics in context of musical production. In this part of the thesis there is also description of marketing research. In favour of smooth transition to practical part, at the very end of theoretical part there is a summary of main competitors. The practical part is focused on the company operating in the theater Hybernia and on its marketing and communication activities. Based on the theoretical presumptions the marketing research had been realized and it had examined the customers of this company. The output of the research, analysis of the marketing mix and analysis of the competitors serve as basis for creating innovations in marketing mix.

The statutory limit for non-professional exposure to low frequency noise has not yet been established (due to the limited amount of data on low frequency noise exposure risks) in the EU countries (USA) and no WHO recommendations have been issued in this area. For these reasons, the hygienic limit for municipal/non-professional exposure to low frequency noise was not specified in the Czech Republic. Objecticve: The present dissertation thesis was to investigate whether the short-term experimental exposure to low frequency noise with the tonic component induces significant changes in the circadian rhythm of cortisol and alpha-amylase in saliva in the experimental set of volunteers. Saliva is a biological material that allows low-invasiveness collection. The construction of the concept habitus cortesão bragantino was processed from the analysis of the modus operandi in the field of musical production of the members of the house of Bragança and its continuity in the context of Rio de Janeiro. The musical practices linked to the ceremonies and official events of the monarchy and their distinction and consecration rituals; investments in the field of musical production as part of the Brazilian civilization process; the creation of the first Brazilian institutions related to the symbolic construction of the nation were apparent through the Praxiology brought by Pierre Bourdieu. The corpus of the research consisted of various sources such as manuscripts, newspapers and periodicals, musical works scores, as well as literature dealing with Brazilian historical, cultural, and musical formation. As a result of the transfer of the Portuguese court to Rio de Janeiro, it is noted the Formation of the Musical Scene, Formation of the Musical Taste, and Formation of the Professional Work Field of the musicians. The path of construction of this object made possible the recognition of the importance of music in the daily life of the members of the House of Bragança, as well as part of the civilizing project and the fabrication of the Brazilian Empire. / Esta tese, vinculada à Linha de Pesquisa Educação, Trabalho e Movimentos Sociais, do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação da Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), resulta da investigação dos usos e funções da música como estratégia de reprodução do poder monárquico no Rio de Janeiro oitocentista. A construção do conceito habitus cortesão bragantino foi processada a partir da análise do modus operandi no campo de produção musical dos membros da Casa de Bragança e a sua continuidade no contexto fluminense. As práticas musicais ligadas às cerimônias e aos eventos oficiais da monarquia e seus rituais de distinção e de consagração; os investimentos no campo de produção musical como parte do processo civilizatório brasileiro; a criação das primeiras instituições brasileiras relacionados à construção simbólica da nação foram evidenciados por meio da Praxiologia trazida por Pierre Bourdieu. O corpus da pesquisa foi constituído por fontes plurais como manuscritos, jornais e periódicos da época, obras e partituras musicais, bem como, literatura que trata da formação histórica, cultural e musical brasileira. Como resultado da transferência da corte portuguesa para o Rio de Janeiro aponta-se para a Formação da Cena Musical, a Formação do Gosto Musical e a Formação do Campo de Trabalho Profissional dos músicos. O trajeto de construção do objeto possibilitou o reconhecimento da importância da música no cotidiano dos membros da Casa de Bragança, bem como, parte do projeto civilizatório e de fabricação do Império Brasileiro.

The theme of my thesis is the patriotic pedagogue Josef Věnceslav Soukup (1819-1882) whose life was full of feverish activity in the educational system. Moreover he was a prolific author of textbooks (one of his famous is The Technological Natural History) and musical works - we can mention his Wreath of fine songs which includes the song Wayfarer that is known for today. In music he paid attention to carols and Christmas songs and plays as well (the most famous is The Young Shephers of Bethlehem). J. V. Soukup excelled in almost every field, not only in pedagogy and music but also in drawing (he even taught Mikoláš Aleš, the well-known Czech painter), chemistry, technology and cultivation of plants. Moreover he contributed to many pedagogical magazines. The beginnins of his teacher's career were not easy, he strained for an appropriate position and during that time he had hardly anything to eat. He gave private lessons for food and played in pubs with the band of musicians to earn some money. However, as really hardworking and diligent student he got stipendium and thus he had not have any financial problems since that time. He knew K. S. Aquesta tesi doctoral versa sobre el processament digital de la veu cantada, més concretament, sobre l'anàlisi, transformació i síntesi d'aquets tipus de veu en el domini espectral, amb especial èmfasi en aquelles tècniques rellevants per al desenvolupament d'aplicacions musicals.La tesi presenta nous procediments i formulacions per a la descripció i transformació d'aquells atributs específicament vocals de la veu cantada. The thesis presents new formulations and procedures for both describing and transforming those attributes of the singing voice that can be regarded as voice specific. The thesis includes, among others, algorithms for rough and growl analysis and transformation, breathiness estimation and emulation, pitch detection and modification, nasality identification, voice to melody conversion, voice beat onset detection, singing voice morphing, and voice to instrument transformation; being some of them exemplified with concrete applications.
