Network Forensics and Log Files Analysis : A Novel Approach to Building a Digital Evidence Bag and Its Own Processing Tool

Qaisi, Ahmed Abdulrheem Jerribi January 2011 (has links)
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) tools are deployed within networks to monitor data that is transmitted to particular destinations such as MySQL,Oracle databases or log files. The data is normally dumped to these destinations without a forensic standard structure. When digital evidence is needed, forensic specialists are required to analyse a very large volume of data. Even though forensic tools can be utilised, most of this process has to be done manually, consuming time and resources. In this research, we aim to address this issue by combining several existing tools to archive the original IDS data into a new container (Digital Evidence Bag) that has a structure based upon standard forensic processes. The aim is to develop a method to improve the current IDS database function in a forensic manner. This database will be optimised for future, forensic, analysis. Since evidence validity is always an issue, a secondary aim of this research is to develop a new monitoring scheme. This is to provide the necessary evidence to prove that an attacker had surveyed the network prior to the attack. To achieve this, we will set up a network that will be monitored by multiple IDSs. Open source tools will be used to carry input validation attacks into the network including SQL injection. We will design a new tool to obtain the original data in order to store it within the proposed DEB. This tool will collect the data from several databases of the different IDSs. We will assume that the IDS will not have been compromised.

Muller, Leslie January 2006 (has links)
The problems associated with the effective design and uses of databases are increasing. The information contained in a database is becoming more complex and the size of the data is causing space problems. Technology must continually develop to accommodate this growing need. An inquiry was conducted in order to find effective guidelines that could support queries in general in terms of performance and productivity. Two database management systems were researched to compare die theoretical aspects with the techniques implemented in practice. Microsoft SQL Sewer and MySQL were chosen as the candidates and both were put under close scrutiny. The systems were researched to uncover the methods employed by each to manage queries. The query optimizer forms the basis for each of these systems and manages the parsing and execution of any query. The methods employed by each system for storing data were researched. The way that each system manages table joins, uses indices and chooses optimal execution plans were researched. Adjusted algorithms were introduced for various index processes like B+ trees and hash indexes. Guidelines were compiled that are independent of the database management systems and help to optimize relational databases. Practical implementations of queries were used to acquire and analyse the execution plan for both MySQL and SQL Sewer. This plan along with a few other variables such as execution time is discussed for each system. A model is used for both database management systems in this experiment. / Thesis (M.Sc.

Λιβιάκης, Κωνσταντίνος 09 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis discusses the design and implementation of an e-procurement system. E-procurement is defined as the process by which an entity procures services and goods that are of interest by using modern computing and internet services. The organization studied here is a hospital. Electronic procurement is a type of electronic commerce, thus a theoretical analysis of e-commerce and e-procurement is made. The implementation of an electronic procurement system is then presented specifically about the establishment of a website that contains all the necessary functions for creating and conducting electronic contests. The created system has mainly two kinds of users, ordinary users and administrators. Ordinary users can see the active contests and bid to those who are interested in. Administrators manage the site and are responsible for creating and conducting contests. Also, they have the responsibility of evaluating the offers made, and based on criteria such as the bid amount and the delivery date of products they conclude to the preferred bid. To create the site only Open Source tools were used. Specifically for creating dynamic web pages, HTML, PHP and JavaScript languages were used. In order to create and manage the database, MySQL language was used and setting up a virtual server that will run the site was implemented by the web server Apache.

A/B-testing for web design: A comparative study of response times between MySQL and PostgreSQL : Implementation of a web based tool for design comparisons with stored images

Lindberg, Tobias January 2018 (has links)
Web development is a challenging task and it’s easy to neglect feedback from users in development stages. That’s why the aim is to create a tool which would help the communication between developers and users by using A/B-testing. The idea is to let developers release two choices containing images, which would be the intended design changes. By letting the users vote for the preferred option, they will be able to provide some feedback for the developers. Response times becomes a critical factor for the tool’s overall success. Therefore, this study compares MySQL and PostgreSQL through a technical experiment to see which database would be the better option regarding the image processing. The experiment indicated that PostgreSQL would the better alternative regarding the subject, as it had the most responsive processing of images. This prototype provides a good foundation for a potentially useful system that could be implemented in future work.

Åsberg, Mikael January 2008 (has links)
