Hot Deformation Behaviour of Some Refractory Metals and Alloys

Chaudhuri, Atanu January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Out of the known refractory metals and alloys, molybdenum (Mo) and its alloys are very important due to their unique combination of properties which render them suitable for various applications. Owing to their good creep properties, minimum damage from neutron irradiation and good compatibility with the liquid alkali metals, molybdenum and its alloys are well suited candidates for structural components in the newly developed Compact High Temperature Reactor (CHTR). However, to fabricate components for structural application from molybdenum and its alloys, the processing response needs to be established. The present thesis is an attempt to address this issue in a more generic manner. The study have been specifically aimed to examine the hot deformation behaviour of molybdenum and two of its alloys (Mo-TZM and Mo-TZC) over a high temperature range, for obtaining stable microstructure with good mechanical properties. The thesis basically addresses the following (i) the thermos-mechanical response of the material with change in deformation conditions, and (ii) the evolution of microstructure during hot deformation, and identification of associated mechanisms. Chapter 1 of the thesis includes an introduction of the material system and alloys with a detailed survey of the literature on the deformation behaviour of refractory metals and alloys that are used as structural materials in nuclear reactors. More emphasis is given to molybdenum and two of its alloy Mo-TZM and Mo-TZC. Chapter 2 includes the detail of the experimental techniques and analysis procedures that are followed in the course of investigation. The hot deformation behaviour of molybdenum in temperature range 1400 - 1700°C and strain rate range 0.001 - 10.0s-1 is discussed in chapter 3. The stress - strain behaviour has been further analysed to obtain strain rate sensitivity maps. The micro-mechanisms operative in different deformation domain has been analysed extensively by Electron Back Scatter Diffraction (EBSD) technique. Different restoration processes which include dynamic recrystallization, recovery and grain growth have been identified in different domains of deformation conditions. Chapter 4 of this thesis is dedicated to the hot deformation behaviour of Mo-TZM alloy. Deformation behaviour was studied under identical conditions as molybdenum. Mo-TZM showed higher strain rate sensitivity and high temperature strength than molybdenum. Dynamic recovery is the most predominant mechanism in Mo-TZM alloy as revealed through the analysis of stress strain curve as well as EBSD based investigation. At higher temperature and strain rates dynamic recrystallization has also been observed. The effect of excess carbon which results in Mo-TZC alloy, deformation behaviour has been investigated in chapter 5. The analysis of stress – strain curves in this case indicates the predominance of dynamic recrystallization over a range of deformation conditions. The mechanism has been identified as particle simulated nucleation (PSN). The significant growth of the deformed grains is observed at the highest temperature of deformation. A comparison of deformation behaviour of alloying addition in molybdenum alloys has been discussed in chapter 6. The results of deformation behaviour of molybdenum and its alloys has been compared vis-a-vis with another similar class of alloys based on Niobium (Nb) and apparent similarities and differences in the deformation behaviour has also been discussed in chapter 6. Finally, the overall summary of the thesis has been presented in chapter 7.

More alive than ever? : futurism in the 1940s

Adams, Christopher David January 2016 (has links)
The 1940s are undoubtedly the years most neglected by scholars of Italian Futurism. The movement had long supported Fascism, but its vocal endorsement of Mussolini’s regime and its military adventures at this time is widely considered to represent Futurism’s ultimate betrayal of those ‘progressive’, counter-cultural values popularly associated with the avant-garde. For many, the movement’s apparent engagement with the forces of reaction and conservatism is reflected in the work produced by its artists throughout the war years, which is invariably presented in terms of propaganda imagery, characterised by an unchallenging and retrogressive figurative vocabulary. However, this thesis argues that the 1940s cannot be said to reveal a rupture in either the ideological or aesthetic foundations of the movement, and that common assumptions regarding the crude, rhetorical and one-dimensional nature of Futurist painting (and poetry) during this period are not necessarily borne out by the works themselves. The text also examines the movement’s status within the cultural establishment at this time. It challenges the notion that the reverberations within Italy of Nazism’s campaign against modern art during the late 1930s were irrevocably to prejudice the Fascist regime and its institutions against Futurism. Indeed, it is argued that one can no more consider the 1940s a period of decline from the point of view of the movement’s political fortunes than one can from an artistic perspective. Of course, Futurism did not survive the war. However, it is suggested that whilst the cataclysmic events of 1943-44 were to seal its fate, they also served to liberate the imaginations of Marinetti and his followers, reawakening the movement’s original, visionary spirit, and inspiring a final burst of creativity that anticipated ‘the future of Futurism’.

The Nb-Cu pseudoalloys present themselves as potential substitutes for the alloys from a well known system and already commercially applied, as the W-Cu alloys, used in applications such as heat sinks, electrical contacts and coils for the generation of high magnetic fields. Because it is an immiscible system, where there is mutual insolubility and low wettability of the liquid Cu on the Nb surface, the processing route used in this work was the Powder Metallurgy. Two Nb alloys were used, with additions of 10% and 20% in weight of Cu, and times of 20, 30 and 40 hours for the high energy milling of the starting powders. The milling evolution of the powders is presented through the characterization techniques, such as the LASER diffraction for particle size, XRD, SEM, EDS, DSC, dilatometry, TEM and chemical analysis. After the milling, portions of the loads were submitted to the annealing heat treatment. The process used for the samples consolidation was the hot pressing, which has been applied both on some milled powders samples, as on the annealed powders. Subsequent heat treatments were performed in the samples at temperatures of 1000?C (solid phase) and 1100?C (in the Cu liquid phase). All sets of consolidated samples, and also the two sets of the heat treated, were analyzed by XRD, SEM, EDS, density and Vickers microhardness. Moreover, other Nb powder samples with 10% and 20% in weight of Cu obtained by simple mechanical mixing, were consolidated, thermally treated and characterized with the same techniques applied to the others, and the results were compared among themselves. Despite the difficulty of consolidation and densification of the two pseudoalloys of the Nb-Cu system of this study, on the route that passes through the HEM, samples were obtained with densities around 90% of the theoretical density. And, on the processing route of which were only mixed, the values reached up to 97%. Therefore, in this work are also emphasized the processes that made possible these results.

Estudo termodinâmico da influência dos microelementos (V, Nb, Al e Ti) no crescimento dos grãos em aços forjados a quente / Thermodynamics studies of the influence of the micro alloying elements (V, Nb, Al e Ti) on grain growth in hot forging steels

Romeiro, Lauro Correa January 2013 (has links)
Thermodynamics studies of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides of the micro elements V, Nb, Al and Ti were performed using the FactSage program databases, in order to verify their potential for grain growth inhibition in a range of temperatures of hot forged steels. A procedure to verify the solubility of compounds of the micro elements was developed by means of FactSage, and it was studied complex states less discussed in literature, such as the combined effect of two micro elements in steel and the behavior of carbonitrides at high temperatures, varying carbon and nitrogen contents. The studies demonstrate that the nitrides with Titanium have high stability in austenite at elevated temperatures: therefore they are potentially highly effective in grain size control. Carbides with Niobium also present effective stability at high temperatures, as well as the carbonitrides of these two elements. A good correlation was verified between the solubility product obtained either by experimental methods, or by thermodynamics calculation presented by literature. Also, a valuable contribution is made by the software in the studies of precipitation and dissolution of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides in austenite; thus aiding the selection of steels, and/or modification of the chemical composition of standardized steels, by means of adding micro elements; and providing a suitable choice of carbon and nitrogen content when one seeks to control the grain growth at elevated temperatures. Such results can help indirectly in the studies eliminating conventional heat treatment methods, by using micro alloyed steels with controlled cooling and low alloy steels quenched after forging, with overall reducing costs. Besides these considerations, the results presented and the developed procedure can be useful in other areas where grain growth is an important factor, such as in hot rolling and carburizing at high temperature.

Evolução geoquímica do manto litosférico subcontinental do Vulcão Agua Poca, Província Basáltica Andino-Cuyana, Centro-Oeste da Argentina

Jalowitzki, Tiago Luis Reis January 2010 (has links)
(Grupos I e II). / The Patagonian Volcanic Field composed of late Cretaceous to Quaternary volcanism is widely distributed in a continental extra back-arc geotectonic environment. Eleven monogenetic volcanoes accompanied with ultramafic xenoliths are situated from 36°13′S to 44°52′S. These volcanoes are dominantly composed of basanite to alkaline basalt, which are divided into two groups, based on mineralogy, geochemical and isotope compositions (Groups I and II). These Groups are originated from the similar subcontinental mantle sources, but were undergone to different metasomatism processes. Groups I and II were generated from low melting degrees of an OIB-like garnet peridotite, but the Group II has enriched mantle (EMII) characteristics possibly inherited from on-going subduction related metasomatism, while Group I demonstrates the OIB-like signature, which might result from phlogopite-bearing in the subcontinental lithosphere. The alkaline basalts from Agua Poca volcano (37º01’S - 68º07’W) belong to the Group II and are trachybasalts. The Agua Poca volcano is a monogenetic pyroclastic volcano composed by intercalation of spatter and cinder layers, host ultramafic mantle xenoliths and is located in the West of the La Pampa Province, Northernmost of Argentine Patagonia. The xenoliths show protogranular, protogranular to porphyroclastic, porphyroclastic and porphyroclastic to equigranular textures, and are composed of olivine (fosterite), orthopyroxene (enstatite), clinopyroxene (diopside) and spinel (sp). The studied xenoliths are anhydrous spinel-bearing peridotite and pyroxenite xenoliths in Pleistocene alkali basalts with whole rock Mg# from 88 to 91. Geochemical signatures of the mantle xenoliths show negative correlation between main oxides against Mg# and depletion in incompatible elements compared to primitive mantle (PM). Agua Poca mantle xenoliths are characterized by flat Sun & McDonough (1989) primitive mantle (PM) normalized HREE and MREE patterns, and depletion of LREE compared to HREE (CeN/YbN = 0.15-0.5), with exception of the HAP10 (1.46) sample. These characteristics suggest that partial melting event is the main process responsible for the generation of these xenoliths. Model calculations suggest that the xenoliths are the result of 1 to 10% of DMM (Depleted Mantle MORB) or 8 to 17% of PM partial melting. Peridotite samples show positive anomalies of Ba, U, Ta, Pb, Zr and Ti; and negative anomalies of Rb, Th, Nb, La and Y, while the pyroxenite samples show positive anomalies of Ba, U, Ta and Pb; and negative anomalies of Th, Nb, La, Zr, Hf, Ti and Y. Mixing curves calculated to mixtures of melting residue of PM/DMM and fluid or sediment compositions related to subduction tectonic setting end members suggest up to 3% of interaction of the fluid sediment on the depleted mantle residue. 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.702874 - 0.704999, with average of 0.704035) are similar to those defined to peridotites with OIB source (87Sr/86Sr = 0.70244 to 0.70502), being close to Depleted Mantle (DM; 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7023 to 0.7032) values. Nb/Ta ratios suggest that Agua Poca xenoliths were undergone to partial melting processes that generated alkaline magmas with superchondritic Nb/Ta ratios.

Dalí's religious models : the iconography of martyrdom and its contemplation

Escribano, Miguel January 2016 (has links)
This thesis investigates Dalí’s adoption of religious iconography to help represent themes that he had conceptualised through Surrealism, psychoanalysis and other thought systems. His selective use of sources was closely bound to his life circumstances, and I integrate biographical details in my analysis of his paintings. I identify unexpected sources of Dalí's images, and demonstrate how alert he was to the psychological motivations of traditional art. I find he made especial use of the iconography of martyrdom – and the perceptual and cognitive mechanics of the contemplation of death – that foreground the problem of the sexual and mortal self. Part I examines the period 1925-7, when Dalí developed an aesthetic outlook in dialogue with Lorca, formulated in his text, 'Sant Sebastià'. Representations of Sebastian and other martyr saints provided patterns for Dalí's exposition of the generative and degenerating self. In three chapters, based on three paintings, I plot the shift in Dalí's focus from the surface of the physical body – wilfully resistant to emotional engagement, and with classical statuary as a model – to its problematic interior, vulnerable to forces of desire and corruption. This section shows how Dalí's engagement with religious art paradoxically brought him into alignment with Surrealism. In Part II, I contend that many of the familiar images of Dalí’s Surrealist period – in which he considered the self as a fundamentally psychic rather than physical entity – can be traced to the iconography of contemplative saints, particularly Jerome. Through the prism of this re-interpretation, I consider Jerome's task of transcribing Biblical meaning in the context of psychoanalytical theories of cultural production. In Part III, I show how Dalí's later, overt use of religious imagery evolved from within his Surrealism. I trace a condensed, personalised life-narrative through Dalí’s paintings of 1948-52, based on Biblical mythology, but compatible with psychoanalytical theory: from birth to death to an ideal return to the mother's body.

Laser-Directed Energy Deposition : Influence of Process Parameters and Heat-Treatments

Sreekanth, Suhas January 2020 (has links)
Laser-Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED), an Additive Manufacturing (AM) processused for the fabrication of parts in a layer-wise approach has displayed an immense potential over the last decade. The aerospace industry stands as the primary beneficiary due to the L-DED process capability to build near-net-shape components with minimal tooling and thereby producing minimum wastage because of reduced machining. The widespread use of Alloy 718 in the aero-engine application has prompted huge research interest in the development of L-DED processing of this superalloy. AM processes are hindered by low build rates and high cycle times which directly affects the process costs. To overcome these issues, the present work focusses on obtaining high deposition rates through a high material feed. Studying the influence of process parameters during the L-DED process is of prime importance as they determine the performance of in-service structures. In the present work, process parameters such as laser power, scanning speed, feed rate and stand-offdistances are varied and their influence on geometry and microstructure of Alloy 718 single-track deposits are analyzed. The geometry of deposits is measured in terms of height, width and depth; and the powder capture efficiency is determined by measuring areas of deposition and dilution. The microstructure of the deposits shows a column ardendritic structure in the middle and bottom region of the deposits and equiaxed grains in the top region. Nb-rich segregation involving laves and NbC phases, typical of Alloy718 is found in the interdendritic regions and grain boundaries. The segregation increases along the height of the deposit with the bottom region having the least and the top region showing the highest concentration of Nb-rich phases due to the variation in cooling rates. A high laser power (1600 W – 2000 W) and a high scanning speed (1100 mm/min) are found to be the preferable processing conditions for minimizing segregation. Another approach to minimize segregation is by performing post-build heat treatments. The solution treatment (954 °C/1 hr) and double aging (718 °C/8 hr + 621 °C/ 8 hr) standardized for the wrought form of Alloy 718 is applied to as-built deposits which showed a reduction in segregation due to the dissolution of Nb-rich phases. Upon solution treatment, this reduction is accompanied by precipitation of the delta phase, found predominantly in top and bottom regions and sparsely in the middle region of the deposit.
