The Intertextuality of the Awareneess and Rationality ¡X a cultural argument in the 21th buddhistic world in China and Japan

Chou, Chi-hung 23 August 2010 (has links)
The so-called Critical Buddhism was originated by two Buddhist scholars at Komazawa University: Hakamaya Noriaki and Matsumoto Shiro. It stirred up great controversy by its claims that the teachings of Tathagatagarbha, Buddha-nature, original enlightenment, and the philosophy of Kyoto School are not Buddhist, and aroused great interest and responses from Buddhists and Buddhologist in Japan.( Shih, Heng-Ching¡F2001) They condemn the ideas of Buddha Nature, Tathāgatagarbha and Original Enlightenment developed in China and Japan as deviating from the fundamental Buddhist thoughts of pratītyasamutpāda and śūnyatā, thereby backtracking to the substantialism of the idea of Brahman in the Upaniṣads. At the level of social criticism, Critical Buddhism blamed the idea of Wa (harmony), which derives from Tathaagatagarbha thought, for social discrimination and injustice.(Yu-Kwan Ng¡F2009) The same controversy caused by Zhi Na Nei Xue Yuan and New Confucianism also occurred in China. Therefore, the development of Buddhism in China and Japan both became the representations of East Asia. The development of Buddhism became not only the characteristic of civilization, but aslo the public philosophy of East Asia through the concept of ¡§Nothing¡§(µL).

The present research analyzes Nei Leandro de Castro's novel A Fortaleza dos Vencidos (2009) in order to investigate the construction of memory in the narrative as a recurrence of witness literature since the novel brings up social and political context of the period of the Military dictatorship. It is about observing, specifically, the memory inscribed in the literary work and how the voice that builds this memory brings up a literary representation of the history lived in that context, that, before the process of imposed forgetfulness, comes up to revive the memory of the reader and to revisit the social history of the country in a critical way. In the narrative of Nei Leandro de Castro, the characters are represented by ordinary people who suffered the tortures in the Years of Lead (Per?odo de Chumbo), and, from a series of connected actions, they speak of the memories of their past; It is this aspect that this work is about. It is necessary to emphasize that the present work encompasses primarily the social and historical context in which the work is inserted, promoting dialogues between both, in order to perceive the way in which, in the author?s fiction, the articulation between the novel and the history, the literature and the social life. In order to discuss and establish relations between the literary text and historical reality, we sought theoretical support in the study of Daniel Aar?o Reis though his book Ditadura e Democracia no Brazil (2014) as well as in S?rgio Luiz Bezerra Trindade through his researches on the history of Rio Grande do Norte. Regading the discussion about the memory inserted in this analysis, we have the contribution of ?cl?a Bosi (2009), M?rcio Seligmann-Silva (2003) and Brand?o (2008), as well as the theoretical contribution of Philippe Lejeune (2008) and Jacques Le Goff 1990). The research found that the studied novel, articulated with the social history of the country, more specifically with the context of the Military Dictatorship, portrays autobiographical features of Nei Leandro de Castro as well as the memorialistic side of the literary work through resignification of the author's memories related to that period.

ABDACOM: America’s first coalition experience in World War II

Nelson, Jeffrey C. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of History / David A. Graff / On December 7, 1941 the Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack on the United States at the Pearl Harbor naval base in the territory of Hawaii. The following day President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan, and America was suddenly an active participant in a global war that had already been underway for over five years. World War II pitted the Axis (Japan, Germany, and Italy) against a coalition of allied nations that were united primarily by fear of Axis totalitarianism. Typically referred to as the Allies, the alliance’s most powerful participants included the United States, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain. However, many other nations were involved on the Allied side. Smaller European countries such as Holland, Belgium, and Poland fought with armed forces and governments in exile located in London after their homelands had been overrun by the Germans in 1939 and 1940. China had been at war with Japan since 1937. After the United States entered the war, allied action resulted in the creation of different, localized military coalitions between 1941 and 1945. These coalitions presented Allied leaders with unique problems created by the political, geographic, military and logistical issues of fighting war on a global scale. The earliest coalition in which the United States was involved was known by the acronym ABDACOM, short for the American, British, Dutch, Australian Command. ABDACOM’s mission was the defense of the Malay Barrier, which stretched from the Malay Peninsula through the Dutch East Indies to New Guinea, and the protection of the Southwest Pacific Area from Japanese invasion. In its brief two-month existence the ADBA coalition in the Southwest Pacific Area failed to prevent the Japanese from taking the Malay Barrier, Singapore, Burma and the islands between Java and the Philippines. This was due not to one overriding problem, but to a combination of planning, command, and logistical problems, compounded by the distance of Allied production and training centers from the front lines. These problems can be traced from the late 1930s to the dissolution of ABDACOM at the end of February 1942. Historians have often overlooked the underlying causes of the United States’ first foray into coalition warfare in World War II. To better understand why the Allied forces succumbed to the Japanese onslaught so quickly, one must look at political, military and economic relations between the United States and its allies prior to the onset of hostilities in 1941. Domestic political realities combined with international diplomatic differences kept the United States from openly preparing for coalition action until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The ensuing military coalition suffered from numerous deficiencies in command structure and logistics. Though pre-war planning existed within each of the Allied governments, the lack of cooperative action gave the Japanese military an insurmountable military advantage over the members of the ABDA coalition. Given the limited scope of this paper the focus will be on American participation in ABDACOM. The other countries involved will be included insomuch as they help to fill out the story of the United States and its first coalition effort in World War II. The story of the ABDACOM coalition is one of perseverance, creative planning, and deep stoicism in the face of overwhelming odds. The short life of the coalition gave planners in Washington, D.C. and London time to sort out potential conflicts between the Allies.

Sambas que dão aulas: a expressividade linguística nas canções de Nei Lopes e Arlindo Cruz / "Sambas that Teatch" - The Linguistic Expressiveness in Nei Lopes' and Arlindo Cruz's songs.

Fábio André Cardoso Coelho 19 April 2013 (has links)
The present work aims at establishing a critical view of the teaching of the Portuguese language, indicating the important theoretical and practical aspects, in the teaching/learning process, and the proposals of stylistic analyses of Nei Lopes and Arlindo Cruzs songs. Some functional aspects of the language are reiterated in association with communicative situations, aiming at the formation of the linguistic citizen. Expressive resources present in ten songs of each composer are investigated, building, thus, the corpus of the research. For the theoretical analyses, the Stylistics principles proposed by Nilce SantAnna Martins, Manuel Rodrigues lapa, Marcel Cressot, among others, are revisited, describing the concept of style, the representation of affectiveness in the language, the value of the expression, the marks of subjectivity. The trajectory of the samba in Rio de Janeiro city and the roots of the musical genre are indicated. The cultural identity of the carioca people and the importance of the composers studied, concerning the linguistic-cultural representations, are highlighted. Throughout the analyses, the compositions such as Sambas that Teach are considerece productive and pleasant material to approach the mother tongue

Effects of Childhood Sexual Abuse on Brain Function as Measured by Quantitative EEG, Neuropsychological, and Psychological Tests

Black, Lisa Myers 08 1900 (has links)
Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been the subject of much recent controversy as a result of Rind, Tromovitch and Bauserman's (1998) meta-analytic examination of CSA, which found a weak relationship between CSA and self-reported psychopathology in college samples. There have been few studies of CSA which look beyond self-report. The present study is an exploration of the relationships between CSA, quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG), neuropsychological, and psychological measurements in 24 high-functioning, unmedicated CSA adults who were matched for age, gender, and handedness with a group of adults without CSA (NCSA). The objectives of this study were to: 1) examine EEG abnormalities associated with CSA, 2) investigate QEEG cortical coherence in the groups using neuroelectric Eigen image (NEI) connectivity indices (Hudspeth, 1999), 3) integrate personality differences associated with CSA with EEG differences, and 4) better understand left versus right hemisphere functioning in CSA using intelligence testing. An examination of QEEG cortical coherence revealed moderate to large effect sizes indicating patterns of decreased connectivity between brain regions on the right frontally in the delta band, and frontally and centro-temporally on the right in the alpha band, and posteriorly in the alpha and beta bands, as well as in the cross-correlation; increased connectivity between brain regions was evidenced centrally across the motor strip and on the left temporally in the delta band, which differentiated the groups. Large effect sizes obtained on measures of personality were related to poorer adjustment for CSA adults in comparison to NCSA adults. In contrast to prior findings with clinical groups (Black, Hudspeth, Townsend, & Bodenhamer-Davis, 2002; Ito et al., 1993), hypotheses related to QEEG cortical coherence (left hemisphere alpha hypercoherence and right hemisphere theta hypocoherence), EEG abnormalities, and IQ (Verbal less than Performance) were not supported. Walker's (2003) theoretical modular coherence model was utilized to integrate coherence and personality variables and provide treatment options.

Professionalism of enrolled nursing auxiliary learners in a private nursing education institution in Potchefstroom, North West : a case study / Beatrix Adriana van Wyk

Van Wyk, Beatrix Adriana January 2014 (has links)
When people hear the word "nurse," they often think of qualities such as compassion and patience. While these are essential characteristics, nurses must go even further when striving for professionalism. Nurses also need strong morals and ethics and the commitment to always act in the best interests of their patients. The term professionalism embraces a set of attitudes, skills and behaviours, attributes and values which are expected from those to whom society has extended the privilege of being considered a professional. The core values of professionalism include: honesty, integrity, altruism, respect, responsibility, accountability, compassion, empathy, dedication, self-improvement, competency of clinical skills and knowledge. Professional nursing practice is a commitment to compassion, caring and strong ethical values, continuous development of self and others, accountability and responsibility for insightful practice, demonstrating a spirit of collaboration and flexibility. Rapid changes in the nursing sector have recently occurred across all areas and settings, making for a chaotic and seldom unstable work environment. All of these changes have impacted the ability of ENA learners to maintain high levels of professionalism and collaboration. In particular, the researcher, as an educator within a private NEI responsible for teaching ENA learners, experienced a lack of professionalism amongst ENA learners during the course of their training, as well as after their enrolment with the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Currently, there seems to be a difference between the professionalism portrayed by ENA learners and that which is expected of them. The overall aim of this research is to enhance the professionalism of ENA learners in a private NEI in Potchefstroom, North West. The following objectives have been identified in order to reach this aim: * To explore and describe professionalism amongst ENA learners in a private NEI in Potchefstroom, North West, and * To formulate recommendations to advance professionalism amongst ENA learners in a private NEI in Potchefstroom, North West. This study was conducted by means of a case study approach as the selected topic focuses only on a private nursing education institution situated in Potchefstroom, North West. From the qualitative instrumental case study approach, a qualitative, explorative, contextual research design was followed. The population in the study was all the ENA learners of a private NEI in Potchefstroom, North West. A sample was selected through non-probable, purposive sampling according to inclusion criteria (n=25). Data collection was conducted by means of a ―World Café‖ method and a focus group. The data collected through the World Café method was recorded and transcribed and reconstructed by means of thematic analysis. The main theme that crystallised from data analysis was that ENA learners viewed professionalism as a set of behaviours that are displayed in their external environment. The behaviours are grouped into the following five subgroups, namely punctuality versus absenteeism, adhering to scheduling and duty hours, responsibility of observations and awareness, the role of dress code and the image of nursing and finally obedience to organisational rules and regulations and tolerance towards others. The World Café and focus group results were integrated with case records according to repetitive themes. From the results and conclusions, recommendations were formulated for nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research to enhance professionalism amongst ENA learners in general. / MCur, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Human Health Risk Assessment for Petroleum Refining Industry of the Remaining Air Toxics after MACT I Emissions Reductions

Roa, Nadia C. 07 August 2008 (has links)
Inhalation risks on human health for hazardous air pollutants emitted from MACT I petroleum refining industry were determined using EPA HEM-3 Program. Methodology included compiling vertical and fugitive emissions from 2002 National Emissions Inventory for sources inside two facilities in Louisiana, 'Motiva Norco' and 'Valero St. Charles' refineries. Six cases were modeled applying EPA criteria, where cancer risks are 'low' if the probability is. 1/1, 000, 000, and non-cancer risks are harmful when hazard quotient is > 1. It was demonstrated that fugitive emissions have more impact on human health than the verticals because of their significant portion of the total refining emissions. HAPs can cause moderate adverse effects in humans living nearby refineries, as 113 people resulted in high risk of respiratory problems with Valero emissions, 4571 people resulted in 'moderate' risk of getting cancer with Motiva emissions, 2702 people with Valero emissions, and 11, 282 people with both refineries' emissions.
