"Making the News": a case study of East Cape News (ECN)

Davidow, Audrey Beth January 1999 (has links)
To fully comprehend the complex process of news making, we must first understand that the events we read about everyday in the newspaper are not merely a reflection of the world in which we live. News does not just happen. Rather, it is a socially constructed product in which events are “made to mean” (Hall, 1978). Thus, the news plays a fundamental role in shaping our interpretations of reality - our perceptions of the world as we know it. Informed by a structuralist approach to news making, this research provides a detailed ethnographic study of the determinants that shape and produce news in the South African print media. I provide examples of the influence various factors, operating at all levels, exert within the news making process. The research focuses on the news production process at East Cape News Pty. Ltd. (ECN) a small news agency operating in the peripheral news region of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. It considers the journalistic routines and interests of the ECN reporters; how these reporters select events and turn them into news, how they interpret their significance and how they formulate them as news stories. The research also considers the second stage of selection ECN news must pass before it is read by the public - the “gates” of external newspapers. In this section, the study is primarily concerned with which ECN news stories succeed past the gates of national newspapers as these are the newpapers that play an influential role in shaping national perceptions of the marginalised Eastern Cape region. A province burdened with devastating rural poverty, unstable government, and little economic growth, the Eastern Cape warrants little coverage from the national, Johannesburg-based news market. As a result, little news of the Eastern Cape is published nationally, further perpetuating the region’s perceived insignificance on a national level. This point also demonstrates the fact that news both shapes, and is shaped by, our ideologies. News, therefore is ideological (Fishman, 1977). My findings reinforce many of the observations of other media researchers informed by a structuralist approach in the field of news making. However, some elements of news making emerge which appear to be unique in terms of other studies of news making. These elements are primarily a result of ECN’s informal organisational structures which allow the journalists a greater level of autonomy than a larger more bureaucratic organisation might. Thus, in addition to considering the structures that shape the news, I also discuss the role of human agency in making the news.

Pronikání zábavy do zpravodajského paradigmatu, její reflexe a vliv na veřejnou sféru / The penetration of entertainment into the news paradigm, its reflection and influence on the public sphere

Klimeš, David January 2012 (has links)
The aim of my work is to describe the penetration of entertainment into the news and the normative reflection of this phenomenon. In the first chapter I conceptualize the phenomenon and discuss the basic literature on the topic. In the subsection I present my concept of the relationship between infotainment and other media concepts from the most general to specific ones such as infotainment. Further, I describe the Czech normative reflection on three different levels: the theoretical debate, the professional debate within political discourse (in which I also include the activity of regulatory authorities), and the debate within journalistic discourse. In the second chapter I show methodological attempts at coping with the penetration of entertainment and I suggest a methodological approach for my own research. In the third chapter I describe historically the onset of the news paradigm in the Czech media landscape, the penetration of entertaining elements into it, and the increased interpretive power of journalists in the commercialized infotainment news. After the description of the Czech normative reflection of this phenomenon and the presentation of the research, I propose a new approach to examine the fusion of entertainment and news.

Telejornalismo e cidadania : análise do Jornal Nacional e do Jornal da Cultura /

Leal, Plínio Marcos Volponi. January 2009 (has links)
This researh aims: to investigate how the television news framing are built in broadcast news, through comparative analysis of two major Brazilian news programs, one from a commercial TV station and the other from a public TV station; 2) to study the role of the frames of the news programs during the coverage of a civil rights of citizenship violatin event. To achieve the goals, we chose to analyze the Journal Nacional, from Rede Globo TV, and the Jornal da Cultura, from TV Cultura de São Paulo, both running in the "prime-time" of Brazilian television. "Set by Gitlin (1980, p. 6-7), media frames are "persistent patterns of cognition, interpretation, and presentation, of selection, emphasis, and exclusion, by which symbol-handlers routinely organize discourse, whether verbal or visual". Thus, to frame means slecting a point of fact and highlight it, while the omissions may also be critical to conduct the audience. To highlight the frameworks of those different television stations, we chose the case of Morro da Providencia, Rio de Janeiro, in June 2008, which showed the involvement of the army in the deaths of three young men, and the reporting of political election propaganda made by Marcelo Crivella. The analysis shows that television news programs were very similar and focused on the informational aspect, not using this episode for the Brazilian citizenship education or to enforce human rights that have been violently violated / Mestre

The safety of journalists: an assessment of perceptions of the origins and implementation of policy at two international television news agencies

Venter, Sahm January 2005 (has links)
Being a journalist today can be a deadly pursuit, particularly for those covering conflict and other dangerous assignments. In 2004 more journalists and other media workers were killed than in the last ten years. While it is impossible to guarantee that journalists will not be killed or injured, kidnapped or detained, a policy has been created to help protect them in the course of their duties. This study examines the perceptions of journalists working for two international television news agencies about this safety policy called the ‘Joint code of practice for journalists working in conflict zones’. This policy was adopted in November 2000 by five major television companies including the television news agencies Reuters Television and Associated Press Television News. This study finds that the policy had significant flaws in how it was formulated and how it is communicated, implemented and reviewed. Recognising the existence of unequal relations of power and conflicting interests at play in any policy process, this study stresses that in the case of the journalist safety policy, all stakeholders should have participated in the relevant policy stages. This argument arises from researching the policy document as well as from the point of view of managers, and particularly journalists who work on dangerous assignments, either full-time or on a freelance basis for either of the two television news agencies. It finds that while journalists are not generally aware of the policy, they do practice many of its elements as well as a range of their own custom-made strategies to protect themselves. The result is to make the policy less effective than it could be.

"Everyone can't be Janne Josefsson" : A qualitative study on the audience's expectations of objectivity in sports journalism.

Gunnarsson, Sara January 2017 (has links)

Nové formy reportážní zprávy v televizním zpravodajství / New Forms of Reporting in the TV News

Lukašiková, Evženie January 2017 (has links)
Following thesis deals with the question of how the four main television channels in the Czech Republic process and create news. Based on her own observation, the author has tried to find and describe the main tendencies in the field of the television news reporting. The thesis thus gives a general overview of the newsmaking routine according to the specialized literature, but also provides the reader with the results of those observations. The work consists of two parts: the theoretical and practical. The first part starts with the basic components of the news reporting, followed by a more detailed description of the television part. The last part of the theory includes the development trends in the television news and deals with the visual and audial components of the news as well as the role of the reporter in it. The latter includes the verbal as well as non-verbal communication, i.e. linguistics of the news and means of expression of the reporters and news anchors as well as the importance of the reporter and the part he plays in the news. The practical part analyzes given pieces of news, using the information provided in the previous part; the analysis is thus based on the above stated criteria. These analyses should then help to describe the way television works with the news and...

Representations of Women in The Dallas Morning News During the Feminist Movement

Lambiase, Jacqueline 08 1900 (has links)
Content analysis of The Dallas Morning News focuses on sources, bylines, photographs, and main characters to determine the quantity and quality of portrayals of women. The study included front pages and main local news pages during one week each from 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, and 1990. Change was charted by year for both sexes. In 1950, few representations of women were included and many were stereotypical. Some stereotyping persisted in 1990, and men outnumbered women more than 3 to 1 as story sources, nearly 3 to 1 in front-page bylines, more than 2 to 1 in photographs, and more than 2 to 1 as main characters. Women still lag behind men, despite feminists' efforts to improve coverage.

Editorial: Kindernachrichten

Dallmann, Christine, Vollbrecht, Ralf 03 February 2016 (has links) (PDF)

Klinger, Jessica, Müller, Antje 03 February 2016 (has links) (PDF)
TV News programs for children, within the context of political socialization, are not only hugely important but are also being faced with constant challenges. The following study focuses on Germany’s Logo! and Britain’s Newsround, two of the larger scale television news programs on offer for children. The study offers ananalytical, quality comparison of the two shows. It looks both at the quality criteria of normative, context-related and formal assessment criteria, whilst exploring the perspective of the recipient, the producer and more scientific approaches. The study concludes with an analysis of the format preparation of the two shows and analyses their respective suitability for children. The study offers a profound insight into the similarities and differences between these two broadcasts and considers how we can attempt to measure the quality of children’s news programs.
