Mostrar? Esconder? Seduzir? : o papel do narrador em obras do PNBE 2010

Volmer, Lovani 13 April 2015 (has links)
Universidade de Caxias do Sul, UCS / This thesis is part of the literary texts reading field, specifically children's narratives, and focuses its attention on the performance of the narrator, a narrative body responsible for conducting our reading and, thus, to makes us close or distant, to show us or hide or to involve us into the narrated. The objective of this study is to investigate the possibility of seen the narrator as a reading symbolic mediator. From the hypothesis that this individual made of paper, far beyond just being ranked as 1st or 3rd person, for his performance in the narrative can also be considered a symbolic mediator of reading and also with the intention of contributing to the pedagogical practice. For this investigation, we selected works of the Programa Nacional Biblioteca da Escola (National Program of School Library) - PNBE 2010, distributed free by the federal government to all public schools in the country. Our theoretical background lies on Iser (1999; 1996), Larrosa (2003) and Candido (1995) with respect to the literary text reading; Genette (s / d); Benjamin (2007), Lajolo and Zilberman (1996), the study of the speaker; Prince (1994), the narratee; Zilberman (1981) and Coelho (1991), children's literature; and Vygotsky (1989), the mediation. After reading and analyzing the elements that make up each of the 50 works with verb visual narratives, that make up the 4 PNBE 2010 collections, we selected eight titles for the qualitative and quantitative analysis, directing our attention to the story and its speech, especially for the narrator's role with a view to the narratee. Based on this analysis, we consider that the narrator is also a symbolic mediator in the reading process, provided that: a) expresses deep knowledge of the narrated and is therefore a wise person; b) takes into consideration the reader's expectation of the universe; and c) challenges the reader.

Narrative versus traditional journalism: Appeal, believability, understanding, retention

Emig, John David 01 January 2003 (has links)
Narrative journalism has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity in mainstream daily newspapers in the United States during the last decade. This popularity has encouraged many journalistic experts to proclaim that narrative journalism is well-liked by readers and may well become the savior of daily newspapering. This study attempts to determine reader preferences in four areas : appeal, believability, comprehension, and retention.

The Technique of Effect: a Study of Poe's Narrative Method

Rasco, Edna Earle 08 1900 (has links)
It is the purpose of this paper to try to show the various methods used by Poe for securing a single unified effect in each of his stories. To facilitate the work, I shall divide his short stories into four groups: stories of effect, stories or ratiocination, stories of pseudo-science, and stories of satire and humor. It is inevitable that the chapters overlap in many instances because some methods are used in more than one type of story. Often a story may be placed in more than one group, since the divisions are so broad. Notwithstanding these difficulties, it is possible to find many methods used by Poe to develop the narrative style, so peculiarly his own, by which he seldom failed to produce a compelling story.

Sign and structure : a semio-structural approach to the short stories o D.B.Z. Ntuli's Isibhakabhaka

Ntuli, C. D. (Cynthia Danisile), 1959- 11 1900 (has links)
Chapter 1 outlines the aim of the study, research methodology, delimitation of scope and the definition of some terms. This is followed by a list of Zulu short stories which Ntuli has already contributed. His other contributions in circles outside the writing of fiction are also acknowledged. Finally, tribute is paid to some contributions made by Ntuli as an endeavour to uplift the standard of Zulu writing. In Chapter 2 plot structure is discussed. This is followed by an in-depth semiotic analysis of some short stories. Chapter 3 deals with the different narration techniques employed by the author in his short stories. Chapter 4 differentiates between actors and characters. Different methods of character portrayal are investigated. Chapter 5 concludes this dissertation by summarising the main finding of this study. It also brings forth some conclusions with regard to literary merit of Ntuli's short stories and his contribution to Zulu literature. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

An analysis of account on love affairs in IsiZulu

Shabalala, Brian Christian Thamsanqa 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (African Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / This study explores the theoretical work in the articulation of the motivations and conditions for account-giving in isiZulu. In this context, accounts are similar to narratives and can be retained at the level of private reflections or written diary entries or for others to read and refer to from time to time. The account-giving process, according to Waldron (1997), is like a “life in motion” in which individual characters are portrayed as moving through their experiences, dealing with conflicts or problems in their lives and, at the same time, searching for resolutions. It is the quest to understand the major stresses in each individual’s mind that is at the core of this study. The why-questions that are the result of the daily experiences of destitution, depression, death, disability, etc. are also addressed here. Narrative accounts form the basis of moral and social events and, as such, stories have two elements through which they are explored. They are explored from the point of view of, firstly, the way in which they are told and, secondly, the way in which they are lived within a social context. These stories follow a historically or culturally based format and, to this effect, Gergen (1994) suggests narrative criteria that constitute a historically contingent narrative form. Narrative forms are linguistic tools that have important social functions to fulfil satisfactorily, such as stability narrative, progressive narrative and regressive narrative. According to Gergen (1994), self-narratives are social processes in which individuals are realised on the personal perspective or experience and, as such, their emotions are viewed as constitutive features of relationship. The self-narratives used and analysed in this study portray the contemporary culture-based elements or segments of a well-formed narrative.

Account-giving in the narratives of personal experience in Sepedi

Sekhoela, William Godwright 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (African Languages))-- University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The study on accounts examines how people account for the activities and experiences through our personal stories emanating from how they behave in the community, and because of the past stories they tell. The study thus provides an examination of accounts as well as account-giving. It provides a scientific understanding of the value and impact of personal stories and story-telling in people’s lives. The problem experienced in relation to accounts relates to how accounts impact on people and vice versa. One hypotheses of this study on accounts relates to the nature of the process associated with people’s presentation of personal account to others. The aims and objectives of this study crucially relate to providing an analysis and understanding of accounts. The research method used in this study provides a basis to the analysis and understanding of accounts in the sense that individuals who were interviewed in the process, provided informative accounts of their childhood stories, some of whom were not aware that they have or had an impact on their daily lives. The main findings of the research provide insights into accounts. The findings are informative and contribute to theory development as regard account-giving, including factors relating to deference and respect. The recommendation that given in this work is that personal stories have a scientific merit in terms of a comunication-theoretic approach to narratives, as shown in the study.

Bakkes, Lana 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / This study explores the manner in which the incomprehensibility of people’s lives and the relativity of history are portrayed in Sleuteloog by Hella Haasse. The expansion of these two themes focuses on the roles of perspective and focalisation and their connection to the identity of the self and the “other” against the backdrop of Dutch India /Indonesia and the Netherlands.

Ferreira, Rikus 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University , 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is concerned with a study of the two basic elements of communication, namely image and text. How these basic communication tools function in the genre of the visual narrative with regard to their roles in the comic strip and the artist's book, will be examined. Both genres, the comic book and the artist's book, consist of complex structures regarding their workings in the framework of the visual narrative, and this work explores these complexities by analysing how image and text function in the visual narrative. The area of semiotics is used as a basis on which the arguments in this thesis are built. The principles contained in semiotics act as useful guidelines in the reading and understanding of communication in general, but in this study these principles give focus and structure to the research of especially the comic strip and the artist's book. Concepts that are discussed in depth include the interesting interactions which occur between image and text when they are used together. Signs, icons, symbols and how they function with (or without) text, are also examined. Text can also function as image, and this visualisation of text is explored. The role of concepts like interpretation, perception, the study of images and image-association, are all very important in the visual communicator's eventual success with his/her communication. How these concepts influence the creation and forming of one's visual intelligence and visual literacy, and the eventual effect it has on the process of communication, make up a very important part of this study. These arguments lead to a discussion of the dynamics contained in the visual narrative when looked at from a semiotic perspective. Central to the discussion on the visual narrative in this thesis, is the differentiation between two similar genres: 1) Firstly, a discussion of the functioning of the comic strip medium. Important aspects of this subject are the interactions of image and text, and how the comic medium consists of a unique set of symbols, which influence the specific communication in this genre. 2) Secondly, the genre of the artist's book, and how the medium of the book functions as a unique phenomenon in communication. The systems of meaning contained in the medium of the book are looked at against the light of a semiotic analysis of text and image. This research supports the importance of a semiotic approach as a helpful aid in the interpretation of any piece of communication, but especially that of the comic strip medium and the artist's book. The theories of Charles Peirce, Ferdinand de Saussure, Roman Jakobson, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Umberto Eco are used as basis of the arguments in this thesis and serve as valuable ground for a useful discourse. The implementation of above mentioned theories lead to an indication of the complexities involved in the special visual language of the comic strip and the artist's book.
