El Janati, Abdelmalek 08 1900 (has links)
For David Miller, the inclusion of immigrants requires their cultural integration. A mere political inclusion of immigrants without cultural anchoring muddles the cultural background of the nation-state, already tested by globalization, sub-state nationalisms and fragmented identities. Therefore, cultural homogeneity provides the nation-state a strong national identity required for citizenship, democratic deliberation and social justice. Our aim in this memorandum is to show that this substantialist approach is too strong a requirement, that this conception of national identity should not be a sine qua non prerequisite for a viable liberal political identity, and that it is incompatible with a pluralist society. We are proposing, instead, a political approach founded on a specific interpretation of Rawl’s public reason theory. Hence, two objectives will be explored: the plausible dissociation of national identity and citizenship, and consequently, the foundation of a pluralist society.

Divided in Diversity? : A Critical Study of Identity Construction in Wales and the Effects of European Integration

Consenheim, Emma January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to provide a deeper understanding of the construction of identity in relation to European integration and to discover how identities are constructed in relation to each other. The paper will therefore answer the question: ‘How can we understand the identity constructions in Wales during the political changes of Brexit, and what do these constructions reveal about the effects of European integration’. The EU advocates being ‘united in diversity’. This statement provides direction for this research, as it allows for a discussion of how various identities relate to each other. The paper will look into the political discourse of the Welsh government by applying Critical Discourse Analysis. By examining the speeches of Assembly Members, an analysis can be given of the construction of identity in the political debate in Wales. Consequently, it will look at the effects of European integration on identity construction. The analysed discourse illustrates the importance of national identity in the debate and the rather weak constructions of European identity. It also depicts that even though European integration is an important topic in the political discourse, its influence on identity construction is not strongly established. There are multiple actors that exert influence in Wales. Though, the most important is the interaction between Wales and England. The dividing factor in regards of identity construction is thus not in relation to the EU, but in relation to governance in the UK. The framework of multi-level governance in the UK is therefore an important factor in the construction of identity. The analysis indicates that even though European integration is fundamental for the development of regions such as Wales, national heritage and culture are still the most predominant in the construction of identity.

Vonlanthen, Isabelle, Dichten für das Vaterland. National engagierte Lyrik und Publizistik in Polen 1926–1939: Buchbesprechung

Hantschke, Anna-Maria 16 July 2020 (has links)

Komparace národní identity post-sovětské generace Bělorusů žijících v Bělorusku a Bělorusů žijících v České republice / Comparison of the national identity of the post-Soviet generation of Belarusians living in Belarus and Belarusians living in the Czech Republic

Kracíková, Karolína January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the national identity of the post-Soviet generation of Belarusians. It is a group of people that is specific in that they were born after the fall of the Soviet Union and lived almost their entire life under the rule of Alexander Lukashenko. In the presented work I will focus on the comparison of the national identity of two groups of representatives of this generation. The first is a group of Belarusians living in Belarus and the second is a group of Belarusians living in the Czech Republic. The aim of the thesis will be to find out whether the representatives of the post-Soviet generation of Belarusians living in Belarus and the representatives of Belarusians living in the Czech Republic share a uniform definition of national identity. In order to answer this research question, a qualitative research was conducted with respondents from the ranks of Belarusians living in Belarus and Belarusians living in the Czech Republic. The research is focused on the categories that are traditionally considered to be pillars of national identity. These categories include, for example, the national language, historical identity, relationship to surrounding nations or relationship to national identity presented by President Lukashenko.

Redefinice identity Slovinska po roce 1989 na příkladu vnější prezentace země / Redefining the Identity of Slovenia after 1989

Fišar, Jan January 2021 (has links)
National identity is an important part of not only newly created state's identification and is reflected also in its foreign policy. This diploma thesis deals with the external (re)construction of Slovenian national identity within a political discourse since 1991, when Slovenia gained its independence till 2004, when it was integrated into the EU. The subjects of interest are addresses and texts of the country's top political officials, presidents, prime ministers and ministers of foregin affairs, who were involved in a presentation of the country abroad, and documents of foregin policy. The main aim of the thesis is to answer the question how the Slovenian national identity was being constructed on the outside and what was the goal of this conctruction using the Critical discourse analysis of mentioned sources. At the beginning of 1990s Slovenes gained for the first time in history their independent state and they had to cope with many problems such as their long-standing Yugoslavian history and existence as a part of the Eastern Bloc, geographical location on the crossroad of European regions or its immediate neighbourhood of the disturbed and negatively perceived Balkans. The general agreement of the political landscape on the country's future was one of the main advantages. Tools and goals of...

Redefinice vztahu na epochu dědictví: kulturní dialog mezi Francií a Čínou / To redefine a relation in a period of heritage: the French-Chinese cultural dialogue

Zhai, Meiyu January 2021 (has links)
EÖTVÖS LORÁND UNIVERSITY IN BUDAPEST Charles University Faculty of Arts Institute of World History REDEFINING THE RELATIONSHIP IN AN ERA OF HERITAGE: THE FRANCO-CHINESE CULTURAL DIALOGUE Master's Thesis Meiyu ZHAI Thesis supervisor in Prague: Mgr. Ondřej Daniel, Ph.D. Thesis supervisor in Budapest: Dr. Péter Erdősi Budapest and Prague, 2021 Abstract A long history and rich national cultural heritage have made China and France global cultural powers and laid the foundation for the development of their cultural industries. However, unlike many powerful countries, the model of cultural governance in these two countries is generally state-led. They have a centralized administrative tradition, with direct and extensive state involvement in cultural affairs, and cultural exchanges with foreign countries promoted by governmental organizations, which is more like a kind of cultural diplomacy. The French government places the protection of cultural heritage at the forefront of its cultural policy, considering that cultural industries are related to the quality of nationals, national tradition and cohesion, national image and national cultural security, etc. In recent decades, China has become increasingly active in the cultural heritage discourse led by UNESCO, and there has been a 'heritage fever'. As a result,...

Entre mondialisation et expression d’une culture nationale : l’articulation des identités nationales européennes et de la culture anglo-saxonne au sein de la musique rock / Globalisation and expression of the national : articulation between national European identities and English culture in rock music

Monin, Chloe 10 December 2015 (has links)
Since the 1950’s, rock importantly diversified itself. It became a complex and heterogeneous cultural object. It is now hard to typify the genre as a strictly American or English production. Local and national scenes are effectively developping. Some of them even know international success and bring me to point two facts : 1) English language and culture are no longer the exclusive cultural references of rock production. New national identities now integrate it. 2) Nonetheless, rock aesthetic is still highly recognizable. The aim of this study is to analyse the articulation between rock aesthetic and national culture in the iconography of Finnish and German bands. I adopt a socio-semiotic methodology for analysis. This articulation is remarkable in imagery but also in music. It find its origins in a global social and cultural context, and also in the mutations of the musical industry. After this work, we can produce the following conclusions : 1) Firstly we can conclude that the evolutions of cultural industries and globalised culture toward multiculturalism favoured the developpment and the visibility of national rock scenes. Structuration of the musical economy played also an importantpart. Moroever, the phenomenon is not new. Effectively, the British rock scene is an early example of it since the 1960’s. 2) Then, the evolution and the diversification of rock aesthetic as a result of acculturation create good conditions for the emergence of new identities in rock music. We notice the use of different strategies to express the national in music, such as specialisation into a genre, musical innovation or inscription of music in the local cultural environment.

Přestavby Skopje a formování makedonské národní identity / The Reconstructions of Skopje and the Formation of Macedonian National Identity

Nedbalová, Andrea January 2017 (has links)
The capital city of the Republic of Macedonia, Skopje, has undergone two important architectural changes during the last half a century. Both of these, the renewal of the city after the devastating earthquake of 1963 and the extensive architectural project "Skopje 2014" launched in 2010, included content which focused on the formation of Macedonian national identity. The diploma thesis The Reconstructions of Skopje and the Formation of Macedonian National Identity analyses how architecture and urbanism was used to form Macedonian national identity. As these two events had very different initial conditions, the nature of these reconstructions, together with the promoted visions of national identity and their presentation, differed considerably. The rebuilding of Skopje after the earthquake presented Macedonian national identity to a greater extent through a strong ideological content based solely on visions of the future. In comparison, the project "Skopje 2014" presented an interpretation of national identity through specific symbols. This construction was based on the interpretation of historical events, resulting in a new understanding of the historical continuity of the Macedonian nation. The fact that two vastly different visions of Macedonian national identity, presented through the recreation...
