Decentralized virtual market-place for network services

Wongrujira, Krit, Electrical & Telecommunication, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
With the increasing growth of communication networks, systems, and devices, technology has driven much research and development on a variety of communication protocols, applications, and smart devices. As a result, a variety of heterogeneous networks, de facto and standards have emerged. In parallel, users are also demanding to seamlessly use any device on any network infrastructure within this heterogeneous environment. To go beyond this problem, one of solutions is deploying service entities to be served in/on the network. The services can be composed of many independent service entities to redirect the communication flow combined with pipelined transformations. The service in the network can start from an application to intercept the user flow in a range of formats, originating in different access networks, and deliver them appropriately formatted for a particular end terminal based on the other end user preferences. To provide independent services to be served within the network, we have created a decentralized virtual market-place, which facilitates a place for services to be traded, discovered, and composed between providers and consumers. This approach of virtual market based on a decentralized system is leading to many advantages and challenges compared to other traditional network services. This thesis presents a novel approach towards using market management techniques to improve cooperation among traders in the community, while enhancing the community-oriented network service architecture. Without the centralized control, the decentralized virtual market-place requires the inclusion of techniques to provide better incentives. Given such incentives, rational traders will choose to behave co-operatively and contribute their resources to maximize the efficiency of the community. This will allow an application with dramatically improved utility, efficiency, and robustness and hence enable whole new domains of use. The viability of the decentralized virtual market-place is demonstrated using a prototype implementation and simulation system. The results have clearly shown that the decentralized virtual market-place can improve and overcome the major problems of most existing network service models.

Evaluating an IPv4 and IPv6 Network / Utvärdera ett IPv4- och IPv6 nätverk

Lidholm, Gilbert, Netterberg, Marcus January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is the result of the bachelor’s thesis project “Evaluating an IPv4 and IPv6 network”. The IPv6 protocol was created with the main purpose of solving the problem of the depletion of IPaddresses that IPv4 is currently facing. This thesis gives an introduction to the differences between IPv4 and IPv6 and when one should use one protocol rather than the other. It describes the services that we will use in order to evaluate what kinds of problems IPv4 may experience and if these problems can be solved by using IPv6. We also show how to set up a network with both protocols for each service that we examine. We will subsequently evaluate the performance of these two protocols for each of these services. We found that there were no significant differences in the performance of any of the applications that we tested with both IPv4 and IPv6. Due to the depletion of IPv4 addresses and the continuing rapid growth of the Internet, this thesis describes a very current and a relevant issue for computer networks today.

Perceptions Towards On-line Banking Security: An Empirical Investigation of a Developing Country`s Banking Sector, how secure is On-line Banking

Bongani Ngwenya, Khanyisa Malufu 01 December 2012 (has links)
Information systems concentrate data in computer files that have the potential to be accessed by large numbers of people in and outside of organisations. While security breaches and damages of information systems still come from organisational insiders, security breaches are increasing, especially in developing countries because organisations are now open to outsiders through the internet. As a result, automated data are more susceptible to error, destruction, fraud and misuse. The banking sector in Zimbabwe has introduced, of late, on-line banking facilities and these are heavily dependent on the use of internet. / The increase in computer crime has led to scepticism about the move made by the banks to introduce on-line banking. Some view this as a noble move which has made the banking system more efficient, reliable and secure, while others view it as a risky and insecure way of banking. The aim of this study was to assess whether on-line banking in the developing countries is secure or not. The researcher chose a descriptive-quantitative research design. Data was collected using a self constructed questionnaire. Convenience sampling and stratified random sampling techniques were used to select the main subjects of the study. Generally on average there was no significant difference between the perceptions of management bank personnel and non-management bank personnel on the security of on-line banking. The study recommends further future studies on the security of on-line banking in developing countries based on the perceptions of the customers themselves, who are using on-line banking services, the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security and also a study of the latent dimensions of on-line banking security as extracted by factor analysis, how they differ from elements of information security as derived from the theoretical framework and literature.

Atendimento ao paciente psiquiátrico: cotidiano de um serviço de pronto atendimento do interior do estado de São Paulo / Psychiatric Patient Care: a daily emergency service in the state of Sao Paulo.

Barbosa, Sara Pinto 20 August 2012 (has links)
This research is characterized as a qualitative study, descriptive exploratory held in a District Health Unit Basic (UBDS) the region west of the city of Ribeirao Preto, interior of São Paulo. This service is also a Health Center linked to the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sao Paulo. The goal this research was to study the day-to-day of care of the demands of mental health conducted in the emergency room of this service. The study is justified because, after initiation of the Psychiatric Reform, emergency services, both those who work within general hospitals as allocated in the emergency units in the health units, are important to point in the network of mental health care. As an instrument of data collection used the participant observation and semistructured interviews with 17 participants. Were performed about 90 hours of participant observation, which was recorded in a field diary. Survey participants were questioned about the service demands of users with mental health service. The interview data were analyzed as contents, and performed analysis of the thematic type. The discussion is supported in current concepts of care for mental health users. The process of analysis four categories: In the emergency room care to psychiatric patients is routine...; The service relies heavily on the physician who is answering...; The vast majority are dependent of drugs... What\'s make?; We do not have a preparedness to deal with psychiatric patients... Thus, from the analysis we understand that the demand for mental health service is constant and that, almost always, is accompanied by an anxiety on the part of professionals who do not feel able to meet this demand users with health. Through observation and interview it was found that, in the service studied, the service model is still the physician-centered, and the remaining team members limited to just execute medication. With regard to the users of drugs the service, did not seem that these are seen as people with demands on mental health. Such users are assisted with postures guided by prejudices and moral judgments, actions inadequate to health care. The difficulties encountered in service, in relation people with mental health demand, appear to be due to an unsuitable formation. Given this, it becomes necessary, this service, investment in improving training to meet this demand. Even with the difficulties encountered in the service studied, we believe that through a continuing education may arise new possibilities and thus a strengthening of local mental health network.

Relationship among Customer Value, Satisfaction, and Word-of-Mouth of Social Network Service

Wu, Kuan-wei 26 January 2009 (has links)
The invention of Internet affects human life style and also creates many innovations and applications of business models. Social Network Service, SNS, is an innovative application and business model in recently years. It changes the development and communication of current social network and gathers high-traffic viewers to create more business opportunities. However, what¡¦s value attracted users to use SNS. This study focuses the usages of SNS from the users of Taiwan area by empirical research. From the customer point of view, satisfaction and word-of-mouth could be relative to and affected by utilitarian value and hedonic value. Therefore, this study builds an applicable integrated model and uses Structural Equation Modeling, SEM, to analyze and approve the relations of constructs. The following is the conclusions of this study. (1) The theory of this study confirms fit indices in SEM, and cause and effect of each construct is very obvious to support it. (2) Utilitarian value can be measured by factors of sociality, convenience, and information availability; hedonic value can be measured by factors of adventure, escapism, and affiliation. (3) Utilitarian value and hedonic value affect customer satisfaction; customer satisfaction affects word-of-mouth. (4) Utilitarian value and hedonic value positively affect word-of-mouth, but providing a good customer satisfaction can enhance word-of-mouth. (5) Influence of hedonic value is higher than that of utilitarian value relative to customer satisfaction and word-of-mouth. It shows that the users prefer hedonic value in SNS. Therefore, this study can be the reference of business administration and academic research.

Analysis and Modeling of Services Impacts on System Workload and Performance in Service-based Systems (SBS)

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: In recent years, service oriented computing (SOC) has become a widely accepted paradigm for the development of distributed applications such as web services, grid computing and cloud computing systems. In service-based systems (SBS), multiple service requests with specific performance requirements make services compete for system resources. IT service providers need to allocate resources to services so the performance requirements of customers can be satisfied. Workload and performance models are required for efficient resource management and service performance assurance in SBS. This dissertation develops two methods to understand and model the cause-effect relations of service-related activities with resources workload and service performance. Part one presents an empirical method that requires the collection of system dynamics data and the application of statistical analyses. The results show that the method is capable to: 1) uncover the impacts of services on resource workload and service performance, 2) identify interaction effects of multiple services running concurrently, 3) gain insights about resource and performance tradeoffs of services, and 4) build service workload and performance models. In part two, the empirical method is used to investigate the impacts of services, security mechanisms and cyber attacks on resources workload and service performance. The information obtained is used to: 1) uncover interaction effects of services, security mechanisms and cyber attacks, 2) identify tradeoffs within limits of system resources, and 3) develop general/specific strategies for system survivability. Finally, part three presents a framework based on the usage profiles of services competing for resources and the resource-sharing schemes. The framework is used to: 1) uncover the impacts of service parameters (e.g. arrival distribution, execution time distribution, priority, workload intensity, scheduling algorithm) on workload and performance, and 2) build service workload and performance models at individual resources. The estimates obtained from service workload and performance models at individual resources can be aggregated to obtain overall estimates of services through multiple system resources. The workload and performance models of services obtained through both methods can be used for the efficient resource management and service performance assurance in SBS. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Industrial Engineering 2012
