McLuhan's Bulbs: Light Art and the Dawn of New Media

Ryan, Tina Rivers January 2016 (has links)
“McLuhan’s Bulbs” argues that the 1960s movement of “light art” is the primary site of negotiation between the discourses of “medium” and “media” in postwar art. In dialogue with the contemporaneous work of Marshall McLuhan, who privileged electric light as the ur-example of media theory, light art eschewed the traditional symbolism of light in Western art, deploying it instead as a cipher for electronic media. By embracing both these new forms of electronic media and also McLuhan’s media theory, light art ultimately becomes a limit term of the Greenbergian notion of medium-specificity, heralding the transformation of “medium” into “media” on both a technological and a theoretical level. This leads to a new understanding of the concept of media as not peripheral, but rather, central to the history and theory of contemporary art. Drawing on extensive archival research to offer the first major history of light art, the project focuses in particular on the work of leading light artist Otto Piene, whose sculptural “light ballets,” “intermedia” environments, and early video projects responded to the increasing technological blurring of media formats by bringing together sound and image, only to insist on the separation between the two. Piene’s position would be superseded by the work of light artists who used electronic transducers to technologically translate between light and other phenomena, particularly sounds. These artists are represented here by Piene’s close friend and colleague, Wen-Ying Tsai. In the spirit of earlier examples of “computer art,” Tsai’s “cybernetic sculptures” used light to announce that art would no longer be defined by its material substrates, anticipating the fluid condition of media that we associate with new media art, and digital technology more broadly, today.

Linguagem e cultura na construção da identidade do sem-terra / Language and culture in the construction of landless identity

Zacchi, Vanderlei José 27 November 2009 (has links)
Access to power in nowadays society can be gained through the control over discourse practices made possible by the use of two powerful tools: the English language and the new technologies of communication. That is true also for social movements around the world, especially the MST, Brazils Landless Workers Movement. However, by making use of these tools, the MST may jeopardize its own identity, since they are usually related to its opponents (or its Others). This work examines the identity conflicts stemming from MSTs use of English and new technologies in the articulation of local and global resistance against cultural, political and social hegemonic forces, taking into consideration the context in which the movement operates and in which its identity is constructed. It is based on four main themes: identity, culture, languages and new technologies. Culture and identity are everchanging concepts. Languages and new technologies cannot be seen as mere tools. They take an active role in the construction of the landless identity. Likewise, they are strictly tied to culture. Therefore, an emphasis on conflicts may be useful for the promotion of reflections and reconsiderations on the concepts of language, culture and identity. Globalisation and nationalism are themes that also received considerable attention, since the MST produces a strong discourse in favour of national culture and traditions, which, on the other hand, is gradually being challenged by the cultural and economic globalisation in course nowadays. Other aspects analysed in this work involve narrative, religion and ambientalism. The research concluded that conflicts and contradictions, in the actions as well as in the selfrepresentation of the landless, are useful for enhancing the plurality of the movement and they both reflect and shape the landless identity. The corpus is comprised of a selection of texts from the movements official website and from electronic bulletins and newsletters sent by the MST and other groups related to it. Text is understood here as being multimodal, so that images as well as other modes of meaning-making were examined. Printed texts were also analyzed, especially those from the MSTs publications: Revista Sem Terra, a bimonthly magazine, and Jornal Sem Terra, a monthly newspaper. Other sources were also adopted: interviews with members of the movement and a field diary based on visits to MST settlements, offices and demonstrations.

O tabuleiro dos jogos que se bifurcam: as manifestações do labirinto nos jogos eletrônicos / The board of forking games: the presence of labyrinths in electronic games

Thomaz, Andrei Rubina 15 May 2009 (has links)
This research is concerned with the ocurrences of labyrinths in electronic games, continuing our studies related to labyrinths and our artistic work in new media. The work done comprises two parts; the first one theoretical, where we revised selected references about the labyrinth, aiming to collect elements to analyse the ocurrences of labyrinths in electronic games. This analysis was performed in spacial and temporal terms, comprising two chapters of this dissertation, with the support of studies related to electronic games and literary and cinematographical references. In the artistic part, we developed nine works, using digital media, that are related, somehow, with the subject of this reasearch. These works are introduced along the dissertation, with a short text about each one, where we evidence the dialog between them and electronic games, as well as with artistic, literary, cinematographical and theoretical references.

Senioři ve světě nových médií / Old People and new media

Lacinová, Eva January 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with problems of media literacy of older people. Its main goal is to capture the way seniors can reflect and evaluate new media. It does not attempt to provide specific and universally valid reply to observed problems, but the intention of the work is rather to understand phenomena and conditions of the problems. The text is therefore divided into three main sections: theoretical, practical and analytical. In the theoretical part key information and concepts associated with communication, media literacy, and age and growing old are introduced. Special attention is paid to the description of relationship between seniors and new media. The practical part is devoted to qualitative research. Information about the way older respondents use and evaluate new media is acquired through semi-standardized depth interviews. The analytical part results from the findings presented in the previous two sections. It serves not only as major conclusions of the work but also as notes and recommendation for further studies or researches. All relevant and essential facts are summarized in the conclusion of the paper.

Residential Broadband Access for Students at Walters State Community College.

Hurst, Mark A 18 December 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the availability of internet access for students attending Walters State Community College during the spring semester 2010. In particular, it is unknown to what degree broadband internet access is available in the counties that Walters State considers the service area of the college. The research was conducted during the spring semester 2010 including the months February, March, and April of 2010. Data were gathered by surveying currently enrolled students of the college. Twelve percent of the population responded to the study. The survey instrument covered the areas of demographics, Internet connection type from home, and usage of that Internet service for coursework. The results of the data analysis gave insight into what degree students of WSCC had access to high-speed Internet from their homes. For example, over 20% of the respondents did not have an internet connection at all or only dial-up available at their home. Thirty percent were dissatisfied with their current high-speed Internet service. Approximately 64% thought high-speed Internet was very important in completing coursework. The study provided an increase in the body of knowledge on Internet access for Walters State students and increased the body of knowledge for Internet availability in the surrounding counties of Walters State.

Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants in Poland and usage of new new media by Polish consumers of Internet and sport journalists on the example of Polish sport websites.

Szalkowski, Arkadiusz January 2012 (has links)
The rise of the digital technology, social networking or interactivity have an extensive impact on what is happening in virtual world. Users of Internet are more and more often introduced to the new available on-line tools. Some of them have adapted those new trends with no problems and they have been taking an advantage of them with an ease, whereas others have had problems with converting themselves into the new digital era. Alternatively, others are not fascinated by what Internet offers or they simply cannot afford it due to many circumstances. However, with no doubts, we can say that the Internet and the digital revolution brought about many issues to discuss or to have a research about. To some extent, new trends, especially the expansion of the Internet, are affecting all traditional media and this, in my opinion, might result in the new phenomena like potential division of society into Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants proposed by Prensky (2001a).The project focused on investigating motives for choosing sport websites by both groups with special consideration of interactivity factor. The motives have been checked via in-depth interviews using the sample of ten interviewees both private and professional users of Polish sport informative websites. I wanted to check whether my results either duplicate what Prensky described in his articles or they confirm contradictive opinion given by VanSlyke.Additionally, I have compared those most popular motives with sample of five most often visited Polish sport informative websites, according to Alexa rank (2012). The level of interactivity on those websites was assessed by an appearance of examples of new new media like blogs, podcasts, number of posts on Facebook fan pages, created account on Twitter or channel on YouTube (Levinson, 2010). Also possibility of commenting was taken into consideration. Having checked those variables via cyber ethnography method (secondary method) I was able to identify which of the sampled websites could be considered as most interactive one.Despite persisting limitations, the method has brought reliable and valid data, according to which I have given my conclusions by answering research questions stated at the beginning of this project.
