"New Science" as a lens through which to view change in a university Facilities Management Division: Complexity, Wholeness, and Implicate Order

Becker, Paul H. 11 April 2006
This study sought to use "New Science" as a lens through which to view change in a university facilities management division and to determine in what ways New Science could help make sense of these changes. New Science takes scientific management concepts beyond Newton, Taylor, and Einstein and employs a systems and ecological view of life in organizations. New Science goes beyond quantum mechanics and includes uncertainty and unpredictability, complementarity, semantic and chaotic infinite complexity, non-linear adaptive feedback networks, and wholeness and implicate order. The conceptual framework for the study was based on applying complex systems theory described by New Science to human systems undergoing change in a university facilities management organization. Making sense of life and change in organizations is critical for university facility managers expected to change their organizations. I was the senior university officer of the study organization during and after the study period. The design and implementation of a computerized maintenance management system from 2000 to 2005 was used as the representative change initiative in the organization. Two integrated methods of collecting data on the change initiative were used: burography and case study. The burography was grounded in the reality of my daily life as a key actor in the study organization. The case study was my narrative of the change initiative based on archival evidence I collected in the study organization. New Science concepts described in the literature review were used as a lens through which to view and to make sense of the change data collected for the burography and case study. The goodness-of-fit between New Science concepts and the data helped address the purpose of the research. The analysis demonstrated that New Science could be used to map" the key dynamic properties of complex systems onto the human systems in the facilities management organization. Viewed through the lens of New Science, the study organizations change initiative was successful because some people in the organization used understanding of the uncertainty and unpredictability in their internal and external environments in conjunction with new moral purpose, complementarity, and semantic complexity to create wholeness and implicate order sustained by adaptive non-linear feedback networks. The networks helped to manage chaotic complexity and to rejuvenate the organization. New Science concepts proved to be an overarching lens through which other organizational and managerial lenses could be used to deal with practical aspects of leading organizations, including positional power and reciprocal leadership.

The Behavioral Changes that can be Realized when Leaders are Exposed to the Theories and Metaphors Found in Quantum Physics.

Godfrey, David Wayne 08 1900 (has links)
Many are beginning to see the promise that the quantum world has offered those who manage and lead organizations (Wheatley, 1992; Zohar, 1997). The Newtonian world is one in which all "things" are reduced to their smallest parts, separated, divided, and analyzed with predictability, with complete control being the ultimate goal. The quantum world is one of infinite possibilities, infinite fields of influence, and infinite relationships. The hallmark characteristics found in a manager who has been schooled in the quantum sciences are flexibility, responsiveness, synchronicity, serendipity, creativity, innovation, participation, and motivation. In a quantum organization there is the constant awareness of the whole system, but there is also diversity (wave or particle), which allows for self-organization that is based on the environment and its requirements. In the quantum world many paths lead from A to Z, and depending on the path chosen, numerous realities wait to unfold. It was the goal of this research to explore the changing of leader behaviors through exposure to the models and theories found in quantum physics. From a quantum perspective this behavior change is possible; the only question is the readiness, willingness, and ability of the leaders to allow their behaviors to be surfaced and challenged. These are indeed the greatest challenges for all people as they proceed through life and work - readiness for change, willingness to change, and ability to surface key areas where change is needed.

The focus of the research is to present the imagination as a concept of unity of knowledge and function of knowledge. For this purpose the dissertation begins with the image title page analysis present in the Scienza Nuova of 1744. This analysis will explore the design, trends and influences that led to the drafting of the image on the title page. An explanation of key concepts relevant follows for interpretation of the viquian opus, decoded from the hieroglyphs present on the title page. After showing the inventiveness of Vico to apply his imagination theory in his own work to achieve the reader, the research seeks to deepen the imagination of the theme as sensorial knowledge of the first people, the poetic wisdom, universal fantastic, the operation of the poetic mind and its requirements as a viquian topical and common sense. This intent aims to understand the contemporary attitude of Vico in his time, his conflicts against divergent school of thought and his concern for the future of humanity / A dissertação tem por objetivo analisar o papel da imaginação na obra Ciência Nova do filósofo napolitano Giambattista Vico (1668-1744).

However, based on the Via Lucis, book that Comenius wrote between 1641 and 1642 when he was in England due to the invitation of Samuel Hartlib and that dedicated to the Royal Society of London in 1668, this study allows to evaluate the interrelation between some Protestant presuppositions and natural philosophy seventeenth century. So, wishing to collaborate with studies in History of Science, this research presents an analysis of the intercourse that pervade: the involvement of Comenius with the seventeenth-century England; the theological premises of the author that legitimizing his support and the Protestant participation in the development of new science; the method to capture, organize and disseminate the universal knowledge from the Comenius Pan-harmony. All seems to indicate that this book of Comenius, rarely studied, not only focuses his dream of Universal Reformation, but the aroused expectations among the promoters of the new science, when he was in London. Such expectations also seem to reveal that both, Protestantism as the new science, longed for universal knowledge from the Nature investigation, the educational development, the social rigging and advancement of useful science / Ao contrário dos princípios pedagógicos de Jan Amos Comenius, poucos estudos têm sido produzidos acerca do seu envolvimento com o propósito e a utilidade da nova ciência.

Corporate annual reports (CARS) : accounting practices in transition

Cronje, C.J. (Christo Johannes) 26 November 2007 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis was to obtain an understanding of the way in which accounting practices that are constantly in transition generate the information that is disclosed in corporate annual reports (CARS). The study shows that CARS may be seen as a product of two main interrelated information processing systems, the first being the mandatory financial information system (MFIS) and the second the discretionary information system (DIS). The MFIS uses accounting practices such as generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), which include International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), International Accounting Standards (IASs), JSE regulations and the Companies' Act requirements, in producing the information disclosed in CARS. The needs of users to reduce the uncertainty and risks in their decision making have an influence on the constantly evolving accounting practices. Standard-setting bodies play a major role in the development and refinement of GAAP. On the other hand, the DIS, in order to provide a complete picture of business entities, uses discretionary accounting practices to produce the contextual information contained in CARS. These discretionary accounting practices are also currently in transition. They cater for the production of information on the business environment, and provide an operating and financial review, overview of strategy, forward-looking information, key performance indicators and information on corporate governance and transparency. Standard-setting bodies may be able to use the contextual information contained in CARS to develop and refine the GAAP used by the MFIS. / Thesis (DComm(Accounting Sciences))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Financial Management / DCom / unrestricted
