The use of mobile value-added service on effects of news production in Kaohsiung journalists.

Chang, Hsin-Hung 01 August 2005 (has links)
ABSTRACT Taiwan privatized the industry of celluar phone in 1998. The number of cellular phones has increased promply ever since. The cellphone density in Taiwan is ranked number one in the world in 2003. As competition increases, telecommunications companies are eager to attract new users by the value-added services like short messages and web-browsing. In the early phase of mobile development in Taiwan, journalists were the main category of heavy users. In the past two years, more creative services with strong promotions have been lauched by telcos, notably the value-added services. This study surveys how journalists in Kaohsiung, a municipal city in southern Taiwan, adopts these new mobile services and functions in improving news coverage, and whether these functions serve as useful assistant tool in reporting. Disseminated to all kins of media reporters in Kaohsiung, this survey finds that more than 50 per cent of sample journalists use value-added services, notably the short message function. Less than 20 per cent of participants use other functions, such as personal information management (PIM), web-browsing through cell phone, image transmission and ¡¥living database¡¦. It suggests that there is potential for further promotion of using the value-added services by phone. A factor analysis suggests that there are eight factors affecting journalists¡¦ technology adoption: time efficiency, dependence, a sense of safety, cost of bearing, function and cellphone brand, interference to work, and helpness to work. A further correlation analysis suggests that the previous six factors are positively correlated with the journalistic covering and editing benefit. Still, this study also suggests that some respondents do not use the value-added servives simply because they feel that basic voice mail function suffices in their work. But 90 per cent of them show strong intention to use it if mobile phone companies lowers prices and adds user-friendly functions. Among them, 40~50-percent are willing to use firstly the function of web-browsing as they see it the most useful in news coverage. Key words: mobile value-added service, news production, technology adoption, journalists, Kaohsiung

Digital media : changes in the news production and journalistic practices in Nigeria

Bosah, Genevieve Amaka January 2018 (has links)
This research contributes to the study of the journalism by analysing the changes in journalistic practice and news production as a result of digital media and the implications thereof. I critically analyse the role of digital media on news production and journalistic practices and argue that the rise of digital media has significantly changed the roles, practices and structures of the journalistic profession in Nigeria. I also argue that these changes require a practice centred approach to explore changes in perceptions of identity and journalistic labour; attitude towards multi-skilling, working conditions of journalists and the commercialisation of news which have the potential to compromise journalistic performance and the news they produce. A proposed combined approach of Pierre Bourdieu’s Field theory and Howard Becker’s Social Worlds was used. I support Dickinson’s argument that the meso-level analysis offered by field research requires the micro-level analysis of the news world to present a “socially situated, empirically grounded and contextually located” analysis of journalists’ adoption/appropriation of media technologies. To this end, the combined approach provides a more rounded understanding of journalism and news production in Nigeria by presenting a contextual understanding of the socio-cultural and political economic context that shape to the changes that are occurring in the newsrooms in Nigeria. Empirical evidence is drawn from five media organisations in Nigeria (Guardian newspapers, ThisDay, Vanguard, Channels TV and Nigeria Television Authority) to examine these from the perception of journalists. It also argues that the adoption of particular technologies is “socially and culturally determined” and understanding these nuances would contribute to the broader debates on news production and journalism.

Fatores intervenientes na produção da notícia e seus impactos na qualidade da informação

Villar, Fabíola Bach January 2017 (has links)
The unpredictability of events that will be converted into news, and the need to comply with daily deadlines turn the newspaper newsroom work into an activity under constant pressure by internal and external factors. At all times, editors have to make several quick decisions, such as whether they bet on a given fact as news, whether the reporter will gather information in the streets or contact the sources by telephone, the best approach for the event, how many and what sort of people must be heard, where to collect data, how to write clearly and attractively for the reader. Moreover, how to guarantee that such decisions will result in accurate, unbiased and reliable information. Within this context, this thesis aims at contributing to the identification of internal and external factors that affect news production, and impact the quality of information that reaches the reader. Resting on a transdisciplinary approach, and employing theoretical concepts from the Communication, Process Management, and Information Quality areas, a case study was built based on applied research. Firstly, the process in a print newspaper newsroom was mapped seeking to identify production flows and critical points. In a second moment, by using Delphi Method seven editors who work in the company were heard with the objective to understand the overriding interferences in the newsroom daily activities, and how they affect the journalistic text. When analyzing the impact of time on newspaper production, the interviewees recognize harmful effects specially during the stage of fact ascertainment, when the reporter collects information and conducts interviews. The editors also highlight the significance of the data cheking stage. The outcome will be non-contextualized news, innacurate or mistaken information and text inconsistency. Regarding the reporters routine, it is evident that the biggest difficulties are in obtaining a different angle from a given piece of news, and gaining access to sources and data within the available time span. Understanding the intervening factors of news production, and being ahead of them might assure to journalists the development of the ideal piece of news more often, which according to the interviewees is that one containing contextualization, plurality, interpretation and creativity.

Media Crisis Decision Making : A Case Study of SR (Swedish Radio), SVT (Swedish Television) and TV4

Olsson, Eva-Karin January 2008 (has links)
The study takes as its starting point that news organizations’ actions during crises vary more than one can expect based on previous research on news work. Accordingly, the dissertation aims to move beyond the notion of news organizations as homogenous and attempts to open the ‘black box’ of news organizations’ decision making. The study is based on interviews with members of three Swedish broadcasting organizations: the Swedish Public Television (SVT), the Swedish Public Radio (SR), and TV4. The interviews focused on how the three organizations dealt with the news coverage of the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks in the USA. The four articles included in this dissertation challenge from different perspectives the previous assumptions presented in the field of media and journalism. First, as a response to the variety of definitions of non-routine news events applied in previous research, Article I sets out to propose a definition of crisis news events from a news organizational perspective. Accordingly, the article proposes to understand crisis news as surprise events that challenge key organizational values and that demand a swift response. Second, in questioning the notion of news organizations as homogenous, Article II examines the actions taken by the three Swedish broadcasting organizations in response to 9/11. This article argues, based on a neo-institutional perspective, that news organizations’ decision making can be explained by differences in organizational ‘rule-regimes’. Third, Article III challenges the assumption that newsroom actions are homogeneous by examining two newsroom responses to 9/11, in particular their everyday organizational structures and previous experiences. The last Article (IV) applies a slightly different perspective in arguing that during crises media managers’ decisions are not only influenced by the audiences’ informational needs but also by the ritual role news organizations play in times of crises.

This research has the main purpose to investigate the interference of space and time relation on web over journalistic activity, reflecting the deepening and quality of factual news. Symbologies of unlimited space and real time, as well as the enhancement of languages and media platforms in convergence process, format the scenario in which are observed changes in production practices of journalism, such as multimedia, instantaneity, continuous update, multitasking professionals and interactivity with the audience. The theoretical study and qualitative analysis of products about the theme "rain", published in the "Latest News" section of the web portal NE10, show a scenario still evolving, in search of new forms of contextualization, the amplification of episodic narrative and the recurrent use of official sources, despite the contribution of the general public (non journalistic professionals) in providing information. In the multimedia axis, convergence still walks to a complete integration of platforms and hyperlink shows up as an essential element in digital information organization, supported by databases.

Interactive Television News

Bunn, Derek L. 08 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
We design and evaluate a way to modify television news to make it interactive for viewers. We allow them to get more of what they want and less of what they don't want. This allows news to break constraints imposed by television broadcast schedules. Our solution is to augment the existing news broadcast structure in the following ways: add a video headlines menu, provide on-demand access to additional story content, provide interactive navigation controls between stories, and a control overlay. For news producers we create a video annotation program and process to help create the interactive news. We use the production tools in a news production room for a week to show viability. We also evaluate the home interactivity by having viewers provide feedback after watching the interactive news produced during that week. Our results show that our solution easily fits into existing news production processes. The solution provides additional depth into stories and individualizes the newscast for each viewer. The interaction for viewers is optional and easy to use, but future work could make it even easier to learn and use.
