[en] GLOBAL AND DIGITAL: DILEMMAS AND CHALLENGES FOR LOCAL JOURNALISM / [pt] GLOBAL E DIGITAL: DILEMAS E DESAFIOS PARA O JORNALISMO LOCAL

NATANAEL D DE FIGUEIREDO NETO 15 April 2021 (has links)
[en] Today media players are facing difficulties and challenges - especially those dedicated to local journalism. 台灣群眾資助新聞產製過程之研究 / The production process of crowdfunding journalism in Taiwan

Chen, Pin Chun Unknown Date (has links)
This study based on content analysis and in-depth interviews, explored the development of crowdfunding journalism, including how news content producers implement crowdfunding projects and how this emerging model influences or changes journalism and journalists’ work. The results revealed that citizen journalists constitute the largest proportion of crowdfunders of crowdfunding journalism projects. Citizen journalists continually explore news production independently and require more resources and professional support to raise the quality of their work. Communication students apply what they have learned by pitching projects, just like a micro start-up. Currently, entrepreneurial journalism has become a trend. In addition to providing skill training and teaching business knowledge, schools should lead students to discuss professional ethics issues. Traditional news media do not consider crowdfunding as a financing source and are not actively involved in this field. Over the past 5 years, crowdfunding journalism has peaked because of social movements. Crowdfunders of at least 30% of project seem willing to endure risky conditions abroad to gather news. Crowdfunding journalism is also an option for reporters who would like to follow a particular issue for a long time. All of these features increase the diversity of the overall subjects of crowdfunding news. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight crowdfunders. The crowdfunders revealed that they would rather take on multiple roles, undertake multiple tasks or stand the various constraints and uncertainty during the news production, in order to have the freedom of the press and much more time to track the issues and interact with their interviewees. Crowdfunders’ production practices varied from diverse business models of crowdfunding platforms. Two crowdfunding journalism platforms are available in Taiwan: weReport and SOS. weReport adopts a nonprofit, one-time funding model, and prefers to provide “seed money” for new entrants. SOS adopts a profit-based subscription model in the hope of providing writers stable funding; the business strategy of SOS emphasizes individual brands and content uniqueness. Crowdfunders or reporters usually take the initiative in news production, compared with donors. Community participation plays a supporting role, but active news collaboration from communities is not easy to achieve. Regarding the relationship between platforms and donors, although platforms endeavor to maintain information transparency, most platforms do not follow up, depending on crowdfunders' self-discipline. This study suggests that the transformation of crowdfunding journalism will move toward long-term development. In addition to focusing on community building and accumulating news production experience, the issue of “turning the news-demanding population into a news-consuming population” must not be overlooked. However, regardless of how crowdfunding journalism develops, the process should remain open and transparent.

[en] FRONT PAGE: FROM THE SCREAM OF NEWSPAPERS TO THE SILENCE IN NETWORK JOURNALISM / [pt] PRIMEIRA PÁGINA: DO GRITO NO PAPEL AO SILÊNCIO NO JORNALISMO EM REDE

ADRIANA BARSOTTI VIEIRA 16 October 2018 (has links)
[en] From the scream of headlines in newspapers to the silence of home pages in network journalism, front pages and home pages express two moments in journalism. Headlines used to seduce the readers in the streets and were an agent of agenda-setting and social memory. On the other hand, home pages are threatened nowadays by invisibility because of new reading habits: the majority of people are reaching the news through links distributed in social media and search tools, which aren t guided by newsworthiness, but by algorithms. To expose these two moments in journalism, this thesis first maps the begginings of the modern front page in five Brazilian newspapers: Jornal do Brasil, Gazeta de Notícias, O Paiz, Correio do Povo e O Estado de S.Paulo. Then it presents the results of ethnographic studies in two newsrooms - O Globo e O Estado de S. Paulo - and a content analysis comparing the content posted by the three most influential newspapers in the country - Folha de S.Paulo, O Globo e O Estado de S. Paulo - in their Facebook s pages to that published in their front pages. Finally, it presents 26 in-depth interviews with journalists who edit or have edited front pages and home pages. Based on the premise that the crisis of journalism is the result of the crisis of modernity, the purpose was to investigate ruptures and continuities in journalism practices. The results reveal that journalists are worried about the effects of reading fragmentation over agenda-setting and social memory. To reach the public, they are adopting new productive routines, publishing spreadable news on social media, among other practices. On the other hand, they still believe in their social responsability and their role in agenda-setting.

Surviving Way and Dead End of TV Journalists in Pack Journalism:A Case Study of Breaking News

Chiu,Yu Ting Unknown Date (has links)
In recent years, although Taiwan’s Government has allowed cable television stations to open and news media have expanded quickly, the development of television media deviates from the Liberalists’ ideal: monopoly leads to consistence, competition forms diversity. On the contrary, not only does Taiwan’s news content tend toward homogeneity and mediocrity, but also the status of journalists has gone from bad to worse. Journalists face two sets of pressures: there have been acute criticisms from Taiwanese society, and working conditions have deteriorated badly. Many research papers have dissected the above phenomenon in the news field, from the abnormality of media structure to the content of news production. This study aims to analyze the development, the operation, the merits and demerits of pack journalism, and therefore adopts a different approach from past analysis. In order to study pack journalism, this study adopts Bourdieu’s journalistic field theory and Giddens’ structure / activities theory to analyze news production processes. It focuses on journalists themselves and attempts to understand the interactive relationship of TV news workers, colleagues and managers though field study and in-depth interviews. Finally, I use grounded theory to analyze field information, concretizing the research subject and goals, with discussions of the model of news production in pack journalism. This study claims that there are five aspects of news production processes when studying pack journalism: individual level, media routines level, cross-news organization level, extra-media level and social-cultural level. The news field gives rise to a system marked by operational closure, which contributes to speed-driven news production and response to television ratings. These become the primary motives for journalists’ news generation, and result in homogeneity of news content. However, in order to advance in their field, journalists will try to distinguish themselves by pursuing scoops and branding themselves as leaders. Unconsciously, they reinforce the power of symbolic violence and get themselves into more complicated positions. Can news workers resist these scrapes? Can news workers resist these scrapes? Journalist need to accumulate resources to resist in the first place. With the efforts, the media structure is going to reorganized and then the journalists will have more space to stand firm the pressures of being homogeneity. After these changes take place, journalists may just be able to break through the shackles of pack journalism.

An exploration of a community's expectations of a community newspaper : a case study of Fourways Review

Potter, Daniella Ann 02 1900 (has links)
This research explores to what extent the community newspaper, Fourways Review, which is distributed to a geographically demarcated area in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, is fulfilling the community’s expectations; how community members use the newspaper and how Fourways Review’s community journalists define their roles. The research uses a qualitative approach to collect data through face-to-face, in-depth interviews with a sample of 30 community members and eight news team members; and one week of participant observation in the newsroom. Data is analysed through a constant comparative technique. The research finds Fourways Review is accepted in the community but is not as community-minded as a community newspaper should be, which affects how the community members use the publication. Community member respondents attribute the criticism to the influence of a market-driven approach to reporting. This is echoed by the news team respondents who say news production is influenced by community, advertising and inter-departmental pressures. / Communication Science / M.A. (Communication Studies)
