Load Carriers; Optimized Solution to Improve Performance of Roll containers : A Case Study at VGR-WESTMA OrganizationAlimohamadi, Bardia January 2009 (has links)
Roll containers are widely used in transportation and delivery operations due to the high level of flexibility and agility they offer to supply chains. However, there is a negative side to the application of roll containers in industry which can be removed or minimized by proper ergonomic and technical considerations. In this thesis work, the safety problems, economic issues and environmental effects associated with roll containers being used in VGR-WESTMA organization are reviewed in order to come up with alternative solutions to the current way of using old roll containers in their supply chain. The analysis of the problem resulted in ergonomic, safety and technical recommendation on using roll containers within their associated supply chain. The appropriate technical design of roll containers that fits the organization facilities are introduced with the aim of streamlining the supply chain flow within the organization. However, cost is considered as a limiting factor for this organization. Hence, proper ergonomic awareness and use of appropriate accessories to the roll containers are considered as a contemporary alternative solution to replacing roll containers being used in this supply chain.

Avaliação da qualidade ambiental de estabelecimentos comerciais da região central de São Carlos, SP / Environmental quality assessment of commercial establishments in the central region of São Carlos, SPAlves, Leandro Augusto Bassi 21 June 2013 (has links)
This study presents the indoor environmental quality of stores in central São Carlos, an inner city of the state of São Paulo, in Brazil. The following parameters were monitored: mass concentration of particulate matter, in its fractions PM10 and PM2.5, noise levels, temperature and relative humidity. Data was collected in three stores in the center of town during seven hours daily, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The stores had, in average, temperature values 5.1 °C higherand relative umidity 35.5% lower than those observed in a weather station located in the countryside. High correlation coefficient between the climate data in the stores and in the weather station was found, indicating that the external environment has great influence in the internal environments studied. Of all samples, 54% indicated thermal discomfort. PM2.5, mass concentrations ranged from 11.4 to 40.6 μg.m-3, exceeding the 24 h WHO guideline (25 μg.m-3) in 35% of the samples. PM10 mass concentrations ranged from 18.4 to 85.7 μg.m-3, exceeding the 24 h WHO guideline (50 μg.m-3) in 33% of the samples. The average inside/outside (I/O) ratio of the particulate matter was of 0.84 for the PM2.5 and 0.88 for the PM10. Mass concentration was 1.8 times greater in the dry season than in rainy season for the PM10, and 1.2 times greater for the PM2.5. Average PM2.5/PM10 ratio was 56%. Correlation coefficient between the gravimetric and particle counter equipments used to determine PM mass concentration was of 0.40 for the PM2.5 and 0.53 for the PM10, and latter had average means 4.2 and 2.0 times smaller, for PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. Noise levels ranged from 50.6 to 67.2 dBA in the internal environment and 56.6 to 72.8 dBA in the external environment, with an average I/O ratio of 0.91. Concerning the 70 dBA daily exposure limit estipulated by WHO, 9% of the sampled days exceeded that value. The location with higher noise pollution was located in front of the street with higher vehicle traffic, and the one with lower noise pollution was located in a street with often congested traffic.

A sound divided : the battles of musical space in Austin, TexasThompson, Todd M. 21 February 2011 (has links)
Austin is the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World,” and its commitment to the practice of musical performance has created a unique environment for musicians and audiences. In particular, this paper focuses on the history of music in public places in Austin. This creative identity has helped encourage growth that creates stress on cultural and social relations. The conflict over amplified music is one front where this opposition plays out. Currently, the Austin noise ordinance is a decibel-based, quantifiable measurement, but everyone involved must make a greater effort to communicate and compromise in the social sphere. To cultivate a thriving live music scene, a strong commitment from venues, musicians, residents, and city hall is necessary. / text

Buller : Hur planeras en bullerfri stad?Milosevic, Suncica January 2015 (has links)
Milosevic, S. 2014. Buller – Hur planers en bullerfri stad?. Kulturgeografiska institutionen, Uppsatser, Uppsala universitet. This essay is about noise pollution caused by urbanization. The field study takes place in Uppsala and explores their organization of handling problems with noise pollution caused by traffic. Noise pollution has long been neglected as an environmental hazard. Studies show that noise pollution can cause severe health problems such as increased blood pressure. Therefore the EU has made a new directive on how cities should handle noise pollution. The essay also exemplifies how the work with noise pollution is implemented in a residential production of today. I have come to my results by observing the surroundings and interviewing the planning engineer of the new residential buildings on the street Stationsgatan which is close to the Central station in Uppsala, Sweden. I have also interviewed the project manager of the municipality’s action plan for reducing noise pollution which was made due to the EU-directive. My results show that we must reduce our dependence of cars and plan for a soundscape as much as we plan on the visual aspect if we want to reduce the noise pollutions in our cities. Not only will the noise pollution reduce if we reduced the use of private cars but also a lot of other pollutions would decrease.

A Modelling Study For The Health Risk Posed By Nuclear Power Plant In Bulgaria At Different Parts Of TurkeyUnver, Ozge 01 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, following a severe accident at Kozloduy nuclear plant in Bulgaria how Turkey would be affected was investigated. The severe accident refers to core meltdown accident with catastrophic failure of containment. The model used is HySPLIT model developed in America. The worst day was predicted considering deposition of radionuclides. For initial runs, accidental release of I-131 and Cs-137 radionuclides was modeled for each day of year 2000 to find the worst day, seen to result from release beginning on April 7th 2000. After modeling release of all radionuclides for the worst day, radiation dose at different receptors, 12 most populated cities over Turkey has been calculated via different pathways. Late effects, fatal cancer, non-fatal cancer and hereditary risks, has been investigated for these receptors. The mostly affected part of Turkey was Marmara region and fatal cancer risk therein was 7x10-2 %. The collective health risk throughout Turkey was approximately 20 600 people. The same approach was then applied for investigating health risk of proposed nuclear reactor at Akkuyu, Turkey. In this case, the worst day was resulted from release beginning on 21st of February 2000. The worst affected part was the narrow strip in Central Anatolia extending to the north-eastern cost and fatal cancer risk in this region was 3.4x10-1 %. The collective health risk over Turkey was approximately 30 600 people. The results showed that Kozloduy nuclear plant has dominating effect throughout Turkey, but proposed Akkuyu reactor affects very limited region.

Vägtrafikbuller utefter E6 Tanumshede och dess effekt på fågelfaunan / Does road noise from E6 in Tanumshede and the effects on birds abundance and species composition?Risberg, Ronja January 2018 (has links)
Studies have shown that birds are affected by increased noise levels and changes in sound frequencies (Kociolek et al. 2011). Different bird species differ in their sensitivity to noise disturbance. Some species can adapt and change their communication to the new sound situation, whereas others may be affected in their reproduction because sound in an essential part of partner communication. Furthermore, some species may need to move to another habitat because they could not adapt to the new sound situation (Gill et al. 1999, Helldin 2004). Birds inventories for the new motorway construction, E6 Tanumshede North Bohuslän, report the numbers and species of birds before and after the opening of the motorway on July 7, 2015. The hypothesis that noise levels differ at the distance from the highway and compared to reference forests were confirmed. On the other hand, analyses with an ANOVA do not indicate that the number of birds is affected by a higher noise level. Some bird species showed a significant increase in numbers after roadwork, whereas others decreased. No significant difference could be seen in the analysis of these birds’ communication sound frequencies. There has been insufficient support to make an assessment of more rare species that might be more affected by a changing noise levels.

Salvador
