Αντισεισμικός σχεδιασμός γεφυρών σκυροδέματος με βάση τις μετακινήσεις / Dispacement-based seismic design of concrete bridges

Μπαρδάκης, Βασίλειος 25 June 2008 (has links)
The majority of seismic design researchers/specialists concludes that displacement-based design methodologies reduce the uncertainty of the design process and probably lead to less expensive structures. The absence of a simple displacement-based seismic design procedure for bridges that will be feasible and compatible with the current design practice and the nonexistence of a proposal for the displacement-based design of the deck indicate the gap of knowledge in this field of earthquake engineering. This thesis attempts to contribute to the reduction of this gap and for this scope proposes a new methodology. The procedure focuses on bridges with concrete piers monolithically connected to a prestressed concrete continuous deck and comprises simple steps for the estimation of the inelastic/nonlinear deformations of both the piers and the deck - through elastic modal response spectrum analysis, extending the applicability of the "equal displacement" rule to the level of member deformations. About two thousands nonlinear dynamic (time-history) analyses of several representative bridges (with deck of three or five spans) are used for the development and the calibration of the procedure. However, for the application of the methodology only elastic modal response spectrum analysis is needed. Contrary to other current researches, which adopt the hypothesis of deck elastic response, the nonlinearities of the deck are modeled. The proposed displacement-based procedure offers lower reinforcement ratios (from 1/2 to 1/7 for the longitudinal reinforcement and from 1/1 to 1/3 for the transverse reinforcement) at no detriment to the expected seismic performance - the global overstrength of the bridges which are designed with the proposed procedure is practically equivalent to the global overstrength of the conventionally designed bridges (current force-based design). The step by step description of the design algorithm (Chap. 2) is followed by the practical application of the methodology (modeling aspects, design examples: Chap. 3), the conceptual justification (Chap. 4), the deficiencies of the conventional design procedure (force-based design examples: Chap. 3) and the fallacies in the justification of the conventional design methodology (Chap. 4). Comparative performance-based design evaluation (Chap. 3) of sixteen representative bridges (eight bridges subjected to alternative seismic design) indicates the benefits of the proposed procedure. The computational capabilities which were developed for the modeling and the analysis of the bridges are described in the appendices (upgrade of program ANSRuop).

Hellou, Gisèle 08 1900 (has links)
In Health Technology Assessment and Management, Evidence-Based Medicine and many tools available for clinical assessment reflect a positivistic and mechanistic approach to Health Care Organizations and scientific knowledge. We argue that the Complexity Theories and the Systemic decision-making process give a different insight on those two aspects of Clinical Governance in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). In a case-study, we describe the nature of critically ill and unstable patients and the organizational structure of a SICU in a university based hospital. We demonstrate all the characteristics of complexity in that setting, through the use of many examples and micro-situational analysis. After an epistemological critical appraisal of EBM, we suggest that if a SICU is conceptualized as a dynamic non-linear adaptative system, then clinical knowledge and scientific thought processes must include hermeneutical, systemic and abductive types of reasoning. Finally, we draw upon Karl Weick’s work and suggest that a SICU must be considered as a High Reliability Organization in order to aim for improving patient care and create better conditions for quality and performance in this complex environment.

Análise dinâmica não-linear de pisos mistos (aço-concreto) submetidos a ações humanas rítmicas. / Nonlinear dynamic analysis of mixed floors (steel-concrete) subjected to rhythmic human actions.

Sidclei Gomes Gonçalves 21 December 2011 (has links)
A modelagem do sistema contempla ligações estruturais do tipo rígidas, semirrígidas e flexíveis. / Nowadays, the increasing incidence of composite (steel-concrete) floors vibration problems due to human rhythmic activities led to a specific design criteria to be addressed in structural design. The main objective of this investigation is to evaluate the influence of the structural connections (beam-to-beam connections) on the composite floors nonlinear dynamic response, when submitted to human rhythmic dynamic loads. The dynamic loads were obtained through experimental tests with individuals carrying out rhythmic and non-rhythmic activities. The investigated structural model was based on building composite floors and consisted of a typical office building interior bay with a total are of 1600m2 used for aerobics. The structural system are composed of a composite (steel-concrete) solution made of an I steel profile and a reinforced concrete slab. In this investigation a complete interaction between the concrete slab and steel beams was considered. The proposed analysis methodology adopted the usual mesh refinement techniques present in the finite element method simulations implemented in the ANSYS program. The structural system finite element modelling have considered rigid, semi-rigid and pinned beam-to-beam joints. The peak accelerations were compared with limits proposed by design codes and recommendations, based on human comfort criteria. The results obtained in this investigation indicated that the structural connections (beam-to-beam connections) can have a relevant influence on the composite floor nonlinear dynamic response. On the other hand, the peak accelerations obtained in this investigation, based on a nonlinear dynamic analysis, indicated that the investigated composite floor violated the human comfort criteria, as well as its vibration serviceability limit states.

Molecularly imprinted polymers for detection of volatile organics associated with fuel combustion

Ngwanya, Olwethu January 2018 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc (Chemistry) / Pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known for their toxic effects which may lead to the cause of degenerative diseases in both humans and animals. PAHs are widespread in the environment, and may be found in water, food, automotive industry and petrochemical industries to name but a few sources. Literature reports have highlighted industrial workplace exposure to PAHs as a leading cause for development of cancer in workers. Particularly, workers in the petrochemical industry are adversely affected and the incidence of skin and lung cancer in this population group is high. The United States of America in its guidelines developed by environmental protection agency (EPA) has identified 18 PAHs as priority pollutants. Among these are anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene and pyrene which have been selected as the focal point of this study due to their significance in the petrochemical industry. Due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic properties reported in literature for certain PAHs, there have been monitoring procedures taken in most countries around the world. The commonly used analytical methods for the detection of PAHs from industrial samples are high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to fluorescence detection, membrane filtration, ozonation and reverse osmosis. Analysis of PAHs from the petrochemical industry is typically performed by HPLC method as well as sono-degredation in the presence of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide.

Implementation and comparison of the Aircraft Intent Description Language and point-mass Non-Linear Dynamic Inversion approach to aircraft modelling in Modelica

Shreepal, Arcot Manjunath, Vijaya Kumar, Shree Harsha January 2021 (has links)
The study is conducted to determine practical modelling and simulation techniques to perform dynamic stability and performance analysis on a 3 Degrees of freedom aircraft model using a Modelica-based commercial tool called Modelon Impact. This study is based on a conceptual aircraft model where in-depth details about the aircraft configuration are unknown and the aim is to determine a suitable model that can capture the longitudinal dynamics and aerodynamic constraints of the aircraft during the conceptual design phase. Requirements include short execution time, easy model development, and minimal data requirements. Therefore, this thesis aims at developing plant and control architectures in  Modelon Impact which can be utilized for the rapid development of aircraft concepts with adequate fidelity in a longitudinal mission-based tracking environment. In a conceptual aircraft design environment, to identify a suitable methodology that mitigates the limitations of a traditional feedback controller, two methodologies are considered for comparison: Sequential DAE resolution (SDR) and Dynamic inversion (DI) control which is discussed from an object-oriented aircraft model. The advantages and shortcomings of each of the models discussed above are compared by conducting several experiments in increasing order of longitudinal mission complexity, and the most appropriate model among the two for a conceptual stage of aircraft design development is ascertained. The two methodologies discussed are compared for their level of complexity, code structure, readability, and ease of usability.

Analýza řečových promluv pro IT diagnostiku neurologických onemocnění / Analysis of Speech Signals for the Purpose of Neurological Disorders IT Diagnosis

Mekyska, Jiří January 2014 (has links)
This work deals with a design of hypokinetic dysarthria analysis system. Hypokinetic dysarthria is a speech motor dysfunction that is present in approx. 90 % of patients with Parkinson’s disease. The work is mainly focused on parameterization techniques that can be used to diagnose or monitor this disease as well as estimate its progress. Next, features that significantly correlate with subjective tests are found. These features can be used to estimate scores of different scales like Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) or Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE). A protocol of dysarthric speech acquisition is introduced in this work too. In combination with acoustic analysis it can be used to estimate a grade of hypokinetic dysarthria in fields of faciokinesis, phonorespiration and phonetics (correlation with 3F test). Regarding the parameterization, features based on modulation spectrum, inferior colliculus coefficients, bicepstrum, approximate and sample entropy, empirical mode decomposition and singular points are originally introduced in this work. All the designed techniques are integrated into the system concept in way that it can be implemented in a hospital and used for a research on Parkinson’s disease or its evaluation.

This research addresses the real influence of the cracking of structural elements in the reduction of rigidity when a seismic event occurs. To do this, first, he described the problematic reality, the background and previous generalities about the topic to determine what type of building to use. Secondly, the theoretical framework exposed a set of fundamental concepts necessary to understand the cracking of concrete, the obtaining of effective inertia, the irregularity of buildings and a review of the considerations of foreign standards. In the third place, it was determined to work with 6 multifamily housing plans, of which 3 were regular structures and 3 were irregular. Likewise, the structures were subdivided into heights of 5, 10 and 15 floors, since they are the type of building that is most constructed in Lima. Afterwards, the geographic, use and geometrical parameters were found from the E-030 standard, to then perform the linear seismic analysis (static and dynamic). Then, the moment diagrams - curvature (beams, columns and plates) were made, so that from them, obtain a reduction factor of the gross inertia and perform a new seismic analysis considering this value as an effect of cracking. Finally, a comparative analysis was made between the results obtained according to the height in regular and irregular buildings. / Tesis

Impact of Ligands on the Performance of PbS Quantum Dot Visible – Near - Infrared Photodetectors

Bothra, Urvashi, Albaladejo-Siguan, Miguel, Vaynzof, Yana, Kabra, Dinesh 22 February 2024 (has links)
Solution-processed lead sulfide quantum dots (PbS QDs) are an excellent candidate for photodetector applications because they exhibit broadband absorption, a wide range of tuneable bandgaps, high stability in air, and mechanical flexibility. However, a crucial criterion for the fabrication of high-performance photodetectors is the selection of the ligands, which can facilitate charge carrier transport between the PbS QDs and passivate the surface defects. In this work, the authors have studied the effect of traps on the performance of PbS QD photodetectors that are fabricated using different types of ligands, using intensity-dependent photoresponse dynamics. The best devices with lead halide ligands show a dark current density of 5 × 10−9 A cm−2 at −0.2 V, which is one of the lowest values reported thus far for solution-processed PbS QD-based photodetectors. Moreover, these devices show a high linear dynamic range (≈90 dB) and high detectivity (>1013 Jones), in addition to an f-3 dB of greater than 100 kHz without the application of an external voltage bias at a wavelength of 784 nm. These results suggest that with an appropriate selection of ligands, solution-processed photodetectors with a lower density of traps and a better device performance can be fabricated.
