Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has attracted a lot of scientific
interest during the last two decades as it is generally considered to be an experimentally
simple and efficient laser-based technique which can perform real-time, qualitative and
quantitative elemental analysis. The basic idea of LIBS is the creation of spark/plasma
through tight focusing of a laser beam on the surface or into a sample, the subsequent
excitation and atomization of the species of the sample at the location where the spark is
formed and the final detection and spectroscopic analysis of the emitted radiation from
the decaying plasma. Seeing the numerous advantages holding the technique, LIBS has
been proposed for many practical, technical and technological applications in various
scientific areas. On the other hand, in the field of combustion, the proportion of fuel in a
combustible mixture is of great importance as it strongly affects the efficiency of the
chemical processes and the production of soot emissions. Therefore, there is a
continuously increasing need for the development of a rapid and non-perturbative
diagnostic technique for the determination of the fuel content locally in the flame
structure with good spatial and temporal resolution.
Ιn the present dissertation, LIBS technique which offers such advantages has been
applied for combustion diagnostics purposes. During the experiments, laser systems with
pulse duration in the scale of ns and fs have been applied as excitation sources, while the
combustible mixtures under investigation were hydrocarbon-air flames, of laminar and
turbulent flow with simple and more complicated structures. From the LIBS spectra in
flames of different compositions, it was exhibited that there is a strong dependence of the
intensities of various spectral lines on the equivalence ratio, which demonstrates that the
precise determination of the amount of fuel can be performed. Also based on this
correlation, the determination of the equivalence ratio locally everywhere within the
flame can be achieved giving useful information about its structure. Finally, a similar
diagnostic technique has been employed. The dielectric breakdown is held using a spark
generator and the technique is called electrical Spark Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy
(SIBS). The emitted light of the two plasmas induced by optical and electrical excitation
was collected and a comparative study was performed.

Previous issue date: 2012-05-23 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / The macrophytes are essential for the development and maintenance of food webs, to carbon dynamics and nutrient cycling in tropical aquatic systems. After senescence and plant death, decomposition of organic detritus depends heavily on their elemental compositions. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of seasonality and trophic state of reservoirs and Vigário Lajes on the mass losses of detritus of Salvinia auriculata, Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes, Sagittaria montevidensis and Brachiaria subquadripara, the influence of elemental composition of debris on the coefficients decay of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, and the stoichiometric ratios between these elements during the decomposition process. Over 120 days, the richest detritus in nutrients and less refractory (S. montevidensis and P. stratiotes) showed a biphasic pattern of decay and the greater decay of carbon (70-90%), phosphorus (90-96%) and nitrogen (68-94%). The poorest and refractories detritus (S. auriculata and E. crassipes) had lower rates of decay, with monophasic and biphasic patterns and lower mass loss in carbon-based (20-34%), phosphorus-based (26%), and nitrogen-based (10- 37%). As for the difference between the environments, the total mass loss of carbon was up to 70% higher during the rainy season (Sept/10 to Jan/11) and 27% higher in the dry season (may/11 to Sep/11) for detritus S. auriculata incubated in the reservoir Vigário; for the detritus of B. subquadripara total mass loss was also greater in this reservoir, reaching 58% in the rainy season and 36% during the dry season. The minor differences between the environments occurred in the mass loss of carbon detritus of S. montevidensis, (ca. 1.3% and 0.3% in rainfall in the dry season) and P. stratiotes (ca. 5.3% in the rainy season and 5.5% in the dry season). Evolution of the Magnetic Ground States with Lattice Distortion and Chemical Inhomogeneity in Doped Perovskite OxidesManna, Kaustuv January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The physics of doped transition metal perovskite has been an area of intense research in the last few decades due to their interesting magnetic and transport properties. Various exciting phenomena such as, colossal magneto resistance, high Tc superconductivity, multiferroicity, ferroelectricity, high temperature ferromagnetism, etc., have made these systems more fascinating in terms of fundamental study as well as technological applications. There are several intrinsic material characteristics in these perovskite oxides that can impact their magnetic properties. Lattice distortion and chemical in homogeneity are two important ones. Changes in valence and ionic radius in rare earth (A- site) and transition metal (B- site) directly result in structural modification through internal pressure. Consequently, atomic distances and bond angles between the transition metals vary. This, intern, influences the nearest neighbour exchange coupling energy and magnetic interaction. A detailed investigation has been carried out on two A-site doped perovskite namely, La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 & La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 and two B-site doped perovskite, LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 & LuMn0.5Ni0.5O3 with a view to study the impact of chemical in homogeneity and lattice distortion on their respective magnetic ground states.
The thesis is organized in seven chapters. A brief summary of each is given below:
Chapter 1: Provides a brief introduction about the perovskite structure. Origins of lattice distortions and its effect on the magnetic properties are discussed. It includes a discussion on different types of indirect magnetic interactions involved in perovskite oxide structure. The chapter concludes with a description of spin-glass, phase separation/ cluster-glass, memory effect in glassy magnetism, critical behaviour at phase transition and specific heat in magnetic systems.
Chapter 2: This chapter outlines basic principles of the experimental techniques employed for the work presented in this thesis.
Chapter 3: Details macroscopic as well as microscopic investigations carried out to understand the glassy magnetic anomalies in La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 samples. The origin of phase separation (PS) has been reinvestigated. Since the magnetic behavior of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 (LSCO15) lies in the border of spin glass (SG) and ferromagnetic (FM) region in the x-T phase diagram, it is subject to controversial debate for the last several years. While some research groups favour PS, others regard SG behaviour as the dominant phenomenon. In-depth investigation carried out to elucidate these views is outlined in this chapter in two sections.
The first section deals with the glassy magnetic anomalies in single crystals of LSCO15 grown by optical floating zone method. Since the sample crystallizes from melt, it possesses good compositional homogeneity and the phase purity is confirmed by XRD pattern. Many characteristics of canonical SG systems are discernible in the magnetic study, such as, kink in field-cooling curve below Tf, frequency-dependent peak shift and the time dependent memory effect. The relaxation time in sub-pico second range (~10-13
s) is very similar to that of the typical SG systems. Time dependent transport relaxation study exhibits memory effect and the time evolution of resistance scales with magnetization and strictly adheres to the stretched exponential behaviour as commonly expected for a SG-like disordered system. However, a detailed study on transport mechanism and temperature-dependent inverse susceptibility reveals the existence of nanoscopic PS in the sample.
In the second section, the origin of PS has been examined through a comprehensive study on two sets of LSCO15 polycrystalline samples prepared from the same initial mixture but subjected to different heat treatment processes. This study depicts the dependence of PS on the preparation conditions. The contrasting magnetic behaviour of PS and SG was resolved by experiments of dc magnetization, linear & non-linear ac susceptibility, neutron depolarization and field-cooled magnetic relaxation. Both samples conform to the general characteristics of a glassy behaviour: a kink in FC magnetization, frequency-dependent peak shift (Vogel–Fulcher law), dc bias-dependent peak shift in accordance with de Almeida–Thouless relation, and characteristic relaxation time in the range of 10-13/10-14 s. This is despite their internal spin structure and interaction being much different at a microscopic level. It is found that the sample processed through a proper homogenization process mimics the SG behaviour, whereas the sample prepared by the conventional method behaves like the PS phase. It is confirmed from neutron
depolarization experiments that no ferromagnetic correlation exists in the SG phase of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3, a result in contrast to that of PS phase. Higher harmonic ac susceptibility measurement complements the above observation by the evidence that of 2nd order harmonics are not present in the SG phase of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3. The field-cooled magnetic relaxation study makes a distinct reference to the relaxation process and the strength of interaction between PS and SG like phases. In essence, a concerted effect is made to identify and resolve the spin-glass phase from phase-separated/ cluster-glass. This work shows that chemical in homogeneity is a key factor responsible for phase separation in La0.85Sr0.15CoO3; also intrinsic differences between PS and SG are identified that can serve as guiding tools for research in other similar magnetic oxide systems. It is concluded that the true ground state magnetic property of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 is spin-glass in nature.
Chapter 4: This chapter contains two sections. In the first part, the origin of the re-entrant spin-glass (RSG) behaviour in La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 has been investigated using the conventional magnetometer measurements. Polycrystalline samples prepared by the conventional solid-state synthesis exhibit RSG characteristics with a glassy transition at 190 K. The nature of frequency dependence of χ″(T), a pronounced memory effect and the sluggish response in dc magnetization measurement, all of which clearly indicate the re-entrant behaviour. But, once the sample is taken through a rigorous homogenization procedure of repeated grinding and annealing, its phase turns into pure ferromagnetic one. During the course of this homogenization process, the sample loses oxygen with concurrent degeneration of TC to a lower level. In order to regain the oxygen stoichiometry, it is necessary to anneal the sample in oxygen environment at 900 oC, which triggers deleterious ageing effect by which TC falls progressively with time.
In the second part, the effect of oxygen stoichiometry on La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO50) thin-films has been investigated. The highest TC reported so far for LSCO50 thin film is 250 K, which is significantly less compared to the bulk TC (262 K) of an oxygen stoichiometric compound. This work focuses on achieving the highest ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) for LSCO50 films under optimized growth conditions. The analysis of experimental data suggests that the Curie temperature can be enhanced to 262 K, irrespective of whether or not, (a) the film on LAO or STO or (b) any induced strain occurs in the LSCO50 film. Apart from different thin-film growth parameters such as oxygen pressure and substrate temperature during the growth, and post-growth annealing temperature and oxygen pressure, the profile of the laser beam used for ablation of bulk material profile also plays an important role. The elevation of Curie temperature observed in thin-films to that close to the bulk value is believed to be a result of improved stoichiometric composition of oxygen facilitated during thin film growth. However, the strong ageing effect seen is quite close to that is observed in oxygen-annealed polycrystalline sample.
Chapter 5: Of the three segments constituting this chapter, the first outlines different magnetic anomalies induced by lattice distortion in LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 (LMCO) single crystals. Single crystals of LMCO compound [(100) orientation] have been successfully grown using the optical floating zone method. Powder as well as single crystal x-ray diffraction analyses provides evidence of large strain dependent structural distortion in as-grown crystals. Spatially resolved 2-D Raman scan reveals that the strain generates a distribution of octahedral distortion in the lattice. While some are compressive in nature, others in the nearby territory relate to tensile distortion. The ac susceptibility measurement elucidates distinct changes in the ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) in the as grown (strained) crystal. It is possible to release strain by rigorous annealing process. Which also results in a uniform TM-O octahedral deformation. Room temperature 2-D Raman spectra bears testimony to this. Upon annealing, the single crystalline order is diminuend by the atomic rearrangement. This causes tilting of the oxygen octahedra, by decreasing intra-octahedral angle θTM-O-TM, and lowering of exchange energy Jex between the magnetic ions. The transition temperature falls and the magnetic phase merges with that in the strain-free polycrystalline material. A detailed critical analysis performed in the vicinity of paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in both the samples establishes that the ground state magnetic behaviour, assigned to the strain-free LMCO crystal is of 3D Heisenberg type. But the local octahedral distortion present in the as-grown crystal causes mean field like magnetic interaction at few local sites. This serves as a key drive for the critical exponents to distance from the 3D Heisenberg model towards the mean-field type.
The second part of this chapter concerns the anomalous re-entrant glassy magnetic behaviour observed in LMCO single crystals. The ac susceptibility study illustrates the low temperature anomalous glassy magnetic ordering in these crystals. The material behaves like a normal magnetic glass, (frequency-dependent peak-shift in ac susceptibility) in conformance with the phenomenological Vogel-Fulcher law, of spin flips time: ~10-4 s.
However, the crystal does not respond to the external dc bias and just as well remains free from memory effect. Anomalous behaviour of this kind is rare in magnetic oxides.
The magneto-dielectric effect in LMCO is discussed in the third section of this chapter. The real part of dielectric permittivity (ε′) has a colossal value of 1800 at 220 K and 10 kHz. However as the sample is cooled further, ε′ decreases slowly; followed by dielectric relaxation in the region, 120 - 150 K. Detailed analysis of the temperature dependence of the imaginary part of the dielectric permittivity (ε″) show that there is no relaxor-like phenomena in this compound. The frequency dependence of ε″ reveals that the low frequency region is dominated by Maxwell-Wagner relaxation, whereas, at high frequency, a Debye type relaxation persists. The temperature dependent full-width at half-maximum for this Debye relaxation, peaks at the corresponding TC. The temperature variation of the relaxation time has two domains of different slopes. At zero external field, ε″(ω) has a low activation energy (U = 46.4 meV) in the ferromagnetic region, compared to that in the paramagnetic (60.1 meV) phase. The boundary lies near the corresponding TC. In the presence of external applied field 5 T, U remains unchanged in the ferromagnetic region, but decreases ( U ~ 5 meV) in the paramagnetic phase. These results signify the existence of strong magneto-dielectric coupling in LMCO crystals. The field variation of ε′(ω) at fixed temperature and specific frequency highlights the rise in magnetodielectricity (MD) as well as magneto-loss (ML) with increasing magnetic field. It is perceived that this variation is not due to the magneto resistance of LMCO or caused by LMCO - electrode interfaces. The influence of extrinsic parasitic contributions cannot be ruled out entirely, but the presence of positive MD as well as ML at frequencies above the time constant suggests that the relaxation process and the magneto-dielectric coupling are intrinsic to the LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 system.
Chapter 6: This chapter describes the successful synthesis of a new perovskite oxide compound, LuMn0.5Ni0.5O3. The structural characterization employs the Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction pattern. The compound crystallizes in orthorhombic Pbnm crystal structure. dc magnetization reveals ferromagnetic ordering in the sample. However the low temperature glassy phase spotted in the ac susceptibility measurement might classify it as a re-entrant spin-glass compound. But the display of memory effect until the ferromagnetic transition indicates that intrinsic ant ferromagnetic interaction prevails over the dominant ferromagnetic interaction. A critical behaviour study was carried out in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition, which provided the critical exponents: α = 0.37, β = 0.241 ± 0.003, γ = 1.142 ± 0.003 and δ = 5.77 ± 0.03. Interestingly, this set of critical exponents does not match with any of the conventional theories of mean field, 3D Heisenberg, and 3D Ising. Rather it fits quite well with data calculated for the stacked triangular 3D version of the (Z2 × S1) model [α = 0.34
± 0.06, β = 0.25 ± 0.01, γ = 1.13 ± 0.05 and δ = 5.47 ± 0.27]. This study indicates that the magnetic ground state of LuMn0.5Ni0.5O3 is canted ferromagnetic.
Chapter 7: Various important results are summarized in this chapter. It also provides a broad outlook in this area of research.

Ainsi, l'adoption de certaines réponses adaptatives plus efficaces et/ou rapides à mettre en place pourrait suffire à relâcher la pression de sélection sur les autres réponses / The aim of this PhD project was to investigate the adaptive responses of metazoan to a decrease of nutrient availabilities in their environment. We combined isotopic ecology and Next-Generation Sequencing in a comparative analysis of surface (epigean) and groundwater (hypogean) isopods living in highly contrasted environments in terms of nutrient availabilities (lack of photosynthetic production in groundwater). The original evolutionary history of these isopods (multiple independent colonizations of the subterranean habitat) enabled to define 13 species pairs composed of one epigean and one hypogean species sharing a common epigean ancestor. Using these pairs, we studied 13 independent replicates of an environmental transition towards very low nutrient availabilities. Hypogean isopods display adaptations improving the nutrient acquisition (specialist strategy, decrease of trophic selectivity) as well as adaptations reducing the metabolic needs of organisms (decrease of growth rate). However, hypogean isopods do not display adaptive changes in their macromolecules composition (no evidence for the ’stoichiogenomic’ selection of N-thrifty nucleotides and amino acids). Because of the small effective population size (Ne) of metazoa, natural selection may be inefficient to select N-sparing responses at the level of RNA and protein composition. Selection could also be inexistent at this level in case of interactions between the different adaptive responses. Indeed, some nutrientsaving mechanisms may have been selected more quickly or more efficiently, these adaptations being sufficient to relax the selective pressure on the other response levels

Ecological gradients caused by land-use change and land management alter soil microbial biomass and community functioning in a tropical mountain rainforest region of southern EcuadorTischer, Alexander 11 January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Global change phenomena, such as forest disturbance and land-use change significantly affect elemental balances as well as the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems. Inappropriate land management often causes nutrient losses and finally soil degradation and loss of soil functioning. Especially in tropical ecoregions, soil degradation by nutrient losses is widely abundant. Soil microorganisms are the proximate agents of many processes performed in soils and are regarded as sensitive bio-indicators. However, the incorporation of microbial responses to the definition of critical soil conditions is not intensively developed.
In the present thesis, several data analyses of the relationships between ecosystem disturbance and land-use change (natural forest, pastures of different ages, secondary succession) and a diverse set of soil ecological characteristics in the tropical mountain rainforest region of southern Ecuador were compiled. In particular, it was tested whether soil microbial biomass and community functioning were sensitive to land-use change effects. Furthermore, an information-theoretic approach was applied to find the factors that regulate soil microbial biomass and community function. Finally, in a nutrient enrichment experiment the above- and belowground responses to N and P additions were examined. The tested research questions and results were linked to the theory of ecological stoichiometry in order to connect the research to a sound and unifying scientific basis.
Soil and microbial stoichiometry were affected by both land-use change and soil depth. After forest disturbance, significant decreases of soil C:N:P ratios at the pastures were fol-lowed by increases during secondary succession. Microbial C:N ratios varied slightly in response to land-use change, whereas no fixed microbial C:P and N:P ratios were observed. Shifts in microbial community composition were associated with soil and microbial stoichiometry. Strong positive relationships between PLFA-markers 18:2n6,9c (saprotrophic fungi) and 20:4 (animals) and negative associations between 20:4 and microbial N:P point to land-use change affecting the structure of soil food webs. Significant deviations from global soil and microbial C:N:P ratios indicated a major force of land-use change to alter stoichiometric relationships and to structure biological systems. Data analysis reveals a strong impact of land-use change on soil microbial biomass, C-mineralization, gross-NH4-consumption and –production rates.
According to the results of the IT-approach, combined models better describe effects of land-use change on soil microorganisms than single explanation models. Microbial resources and soil chemical environment were important pre-dictors for soil microbial biomass and community functioning.
Little is known about the environmental drivers of the catalytic properties of EHEs (e.g., pH, nutrients) and their functional link to the structure of soil microbial communities. The activities of the six hydrolytic enzymes were tested. Microbial production of AP responded to the low P status of the sites by a higher investment in the acquisition of P compared to C. Three major drivers of enzyme activities were found to be significant for enzyme production:
1.) Microbial demand for P regulated the production of AP, provided that N and C were available. At the natural forest site the two-fold higher specific activity of AP pointed to a high microbial P-demand, whereas the production of AP was constrained by the availability of N and DOC after pasture abandonment. 2.) Microbial biomass that was controlled by pH and resource availability was the main driver for CBH, BG and NAG activities. 3.) Substrate induction due to increased litter inputs of herbaceous plant species seemed to regulate AG and XYL activities during secondary succession. The enzymes’ affinity to substrate, as a potentially critically enzyme kinetic parameter is understudied. The data analysis suggests that microbial communities adapted to environmental changes, demonstrated high flexibility of extracellular enzyme systems and selected for enzymes with higher catalytic efficiency compared with pure cultures. Under in situ conditions, enzyme-specific environmental drivers of the Km, e.g., the pH for XYL, the C:N ratio for AP, and the C availability for NAG were found. The data demonstrated that the higher substrate affinity of XYL and AP was associated with more abundance of Gram(-) bacteria. The catalytic efficiency of enzymes decomposing cellulose, hemicellulose, and starch positively correlated with the relative abundance of Gram(-) bacteria. The turnover rate of the tested substrates was three to four times faster at the young pasture site compared with the longterm pasture and secondary succession sites.
Nutrient inputs by atmospheric deposition are known to affect terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about how N and P co-limited ecosystems respond to single nutrient enrichment. In this work the susceptibility of above- and belowground ecosystem compo-nents and of their linkages in an N and P co-limited pasture to N- and P-enrichment was assessed. It was tested if the plants´responses can be explained by the concept of serially linked nutrients introduced by Ågren (2004). In this concept, the control of the growth rate by one nutrient is assumed to depend on the control of a different cellular process by another nutrient. The responses of shoot and root biomass and C:N:P stoichiometry of the grass Setaria sphacelata (Schumach.) to moderate N, P, and N+P application over five years were investigated.
In addition, the effects of nutrient enrichment on soil nutrient pools, on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as well as on microbial biomass, activity, and community structure were tested. In order to evaluate the importance of different factors explaining microbial responses, a likelihood-based information-theoretic approach was applied. The application of N+P increased aboveground grass biomass. Root biomass was stimulated by P-treatment. Grass C:N:P stoichiometry responded by altering the P-uptake or by translocating P from shoot to root.
In particular, root C:N and C:P stoichiometry decreased in P- and in N-treatment. Extractable fractions of soil C, N, and P were significantly affected by nutrient enrichment. P application increased the biomass of Gram-positive bacteria and the abundance of AMF, however, results of the IT-approach suggested indirect effects of nutrient enrichment on microbes. The responses of the N and P co-limited pasture to particular nutrient enrichment support the concept of serially linked nutrients. The present study provides evidence for the fundamental importance of P for controlling resource allocation of plants in responses to nutrient enrichment. Resource allocation of the grass rather than direct effects of nutrient additions drives changes in AMF, microbial biomass, community structure, and activity.

The filter technologies, resonators, oscillators and sensors are essential elements fortelecommunications, automotive, military, medical industries. The most of radio frequency surface acousticwave (RF-SAW) filters, present in mobile phones, are based in LiNbO3 (LN) and LiTaO3 (LT) single crystalsbecause they have high electromechanical coupling factor (K2). However, these materials have a problemrelated to the variation of the operating frequency with temperature (TCF), whose value is about -40 to -95ppm / ° C. On the other hand, it has been previously shown in the literature that the physical and structuralproperties of LT and LN change with Li non-stoichiometry, including elastic properties. The aim of this work was the investigation of the impact of Li2O concentration on the performance ofSAW devices based on YXl/42 (42 RY-LT) and YXl/128 (128 RY-LN) single crystals. In the case of 42 RY-LT,we focused in the reduction of TCF without the degradation of other properties (K2 and insertion losses) andin the case of 128 RY-LN crystals we focused in the stability of devices at high power densities. First, singlecrystals of LT and LN with different Li2O concentration: 48.5-50 ml% were prepared, by using the VaporTransport Equilibration (VTE) method. Afterwards, SAW and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) devices based on LTand LN VTE treated crystals, were fabricated and characterized, in order to study the effect of Li nonstoichiometryand the effect of ferroelectric domains on the performance of devices.

Atomic scale simulations on LWR and Gen-IV fuelCaglak, Emre 12 October 2021 (has links) (PDF)
Fundamental understanding of the behaviour of nuclear fuel has been of great importance. Enhancing this knowledge not only by means of experimental observations, but also via multi-scale modelling is of current interest. The overall goal of this thesis is to understand the impact of atomic interactions on the nuclear fuel material properties. Two major topics are tackled in this thesis. The first topic deals with non-stoichiometry in uranium dioxide (UO2) to be addressed by empirical potential (EP) studies. The second fundamental question to be answered is the effect of the atomic fraction of americium (Am), neptunium (Np) containing uranium (U) and plutonium (Pu) mixed oxide (MOX) on the material properties.UO2 has been the reference fuel for the current fleet of nuclear reactors (Gen-II and Gen-III); it is also considered today by the Gen-IV International Forum for the first cores of the future generation of nuclear reactors on the roadmap towards minor actinide (MA) based fuel technology. The physical properties of UO2 highly depend on material stoichiometry. In particular, oxidation towards hyper stoichiometric UO2 – UO2+x – might be encountered at various stages of the nuclear fuel cycle if oxidative conditions are met; the impact of physical property changes upon stoichiometry should therefore be properly assessed to ensure safe and reliable operations. These physical properties are intimately linked to the arrangement of atomic defects in the crystalline structure. The first paper evaluates the evolution of defect concentration with environment parameters – oxygen partial pressure and temperature by means of a point defect model, with reaction energies being derived from EP based atomic scale simulations. Ultimately, results from the point defect model are discussed, and compared to experimental measurements of stoichiometry dependence on oxygen partial pressure and temperature. Such investigations will allow for future discussions about the solubility of different fission products and dopants in the UO2 matrix at EP level. While the first paper answers the central question regarding the dominating defects in non-stoichiometry in UO2, the focus of the second paper was on the EP prediction of the material properties, notably the lattice parameter of Am, Np containing U and Pu MOX as a function of atomic fractions. The configurational space of a complex U1-y-y’-y’’PuyAmy’Npy’’O2 system, was assessed via Metropolis-Monte Carlo techniques. From the predicted configuration, the relaxed lattice parameter of Am, Np bearing MOX fuel was investigated and compared with available literature data. As a result, a linear behaviour of the lattice parameter as a function of Am, Np content was observed, as expected for an ideal solid solution. These results will allow to support and increase current knowledge on Gen-IV fuel properties, such as melting temperature, for which preliminary results are presented in this thesis, and possibly thermal conductivity in the future.

Ecological gradients caused by land-use change and land management alter soil microbial biomass and community functioning in a tropical mountain rainforest region of southern EcuadorTischer, Alexander 02 October 2015 (has links)
P application increased the biomass of Gram-positive bacteria and the abundance of AMF, however, results of the IT-approach suggested indirect effects of nutrient enrichment on microbes. The present study provides evidence for the fundamental importance of P for controlling resource allocation of plants in responses to nutrient enrichment. Complex oxides of the system Cu-Ni-Fe-O: synthesis parameters, phase formation and propertiesKenfack, Flaurance 15 December 2004 (has links)
This thesis describes the convenient routes and the preparation conditions (temperature, oxygen partial presssure) which lead to the formation of single phase materials within the quaternary system Cu-Ni-Fe-O. The investigated compositions are the solid solutions CuxNi1-xFe2O4, the ferrites occurring in the phase triangle Cu0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4 -Cu0.9Fe2.1O4 - Cu0.5Fe2.5O4 and some copper-nickel oxide solid solutions. Three synthesis routes have been used, namely (i) the preparation and the thermal decomposition of freeze-dried carboxylate precursors, (ii) the preparation and the oxidation of intermetallic phases and (iii) the preparation and the heat treatment in air of mixed oxide/metallic powders. The thermal decomposition of freeze-dried Cu-Ni-Fe formate has been found as a suitable method for preparing single spinel phases within the Cu-Ni-Fe-O system. In comparison with the conventional solid state reaction, the required temperature is much lower. Concerning the solid solution CuxNi1-xFe2O4 , a single phase spinel is formed at 1000¢XC for x < 0.7; for CuO is identified as second phase. In this latter range the formation of a pure phase required an increase of the iron content in the mixture. The other single spinel phases in the phase triangle Cu0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4 - Cu0.9Fe2.1O4 - Cu0.5Fe2.5O4 have been synthesized under special synthesis p(O2)/T-conditions. For copper ferrites Cu1-xFe2+xO4 with x ? 0.1, 0.2, 0.33, 0.4 and 0.5, the change in the conductivity with the temperature is irreversible. The deviation from the linearity of the conductivity ?ã as a function of the temperature occurs due to the thermal history of these samples. The saturation magnetic moment (nB) at 5K, of some synthesized CuxNi1-xFe2O4 compounds has been determined. It has been found that nB increases with the nickel content in the ferrite sample.
