Object Trackers Performance Evaluation and Improvement with Applications using High-order TensorPang, Yu January 2020 (has links)
Visual tracking is one of the fundamental problems in computer vision. This topic has been a widely explored area attracting a great amount of research efforts. Over the decades, hundreds of visual tracking algorithms, or trackers in short, have been developed and a great packs of public datasets are available alongside. As the number of trackers grow, it then becomes a common problem how to evaluate who is a better tracker. Many metrics have been proposed together with tons of evaluation datasets. In my research work, we first make an application practice of tracking multiple objects in a restricted scene with very low frame rate. It has a unique challenge that the image quality is low and we cannot assume images are close together in a temporal space. We design a framework that utilize background subtraction and object detection, then we apply template matching algorithms to achieve the tracking by detection. While we are exploring the applications of tracking algorithm, we realize the problem when authors compare their proposed tracker with others, there is unavoidable subjective biases: it is non-trivial for the authors to optimize other trackers, while they can reasonably tune their own tracker to the best. Our assumption is based on that the authors will give a default setting to other trackers, hence the performances of other trackers are less biased. So we apply a leave-their-own-tracker-out strategy to weigh the performances of other different trackers. we derive four metrics to justify the results. Besides the biases in evaluation, the datasets we use as ground truth may not be perfect either. Because all of them are labeled by human annotators, they are prone to label errors, especially due to partial visibility and deformation. we demonstrate some human errors from existing datasets and propose smoothing technologies to detect and correct them. we use a two-step adaptive image alignment algorithm to find the canonical view of the video sequence. then use different techniques to smooth the trajectories at certain degrees. The results show it can slightly improve the trained model, but would overt if overcorrected. Once we have a clear understanding and reasonable approaches towards the visual tracking scenario, we apply the principles in multi-target tracking cases. To solve the problem, we formulate it into a multi-dimensional assignment problem, and build the motion information in a high-order tensor framework. We propose to solve it using rank-1 tensor approximation and use a tensor power iteration algorithm to efficiently obtain the solution. It can apply in pedestrian tracking, aerial video tracking, as well as curvalinear structure tracking in medical video. Furthermore, this proposed framework can also fit into the affinity measurement of multiple objects simultaneously. We propose the Multiway Histogram Intersection to obtain the similarities between histograms of more than two targets. With the solution of using tensor power iteration algorithm, we show it can be applied in a few multi-target tracking applications. / Computer and Information Science

The politics of truth management in Saudi ArabiaShahi, Afshin January 2013 (has links)
No / The Politics of Truth Management in Saudi Arabia argues that there are two interrelated notions which articulate the ways in which ‘truth’ is conceptualised in Islam. One, at macro level, constitutes the trans-historical foundational principles of the religion, a set of engrained beliefs, which establish the ‘finality’, and ‘oneness’ of Islam in relation to other competing narratives. The other, at a micro level, takes place internally to find ‘truth’ within the ‘truth’. Unlike Islamic truth at the macro level, which is entrenched, the Islamic truth at the micro level refers to the various attempts by different agencies to claim to have found the ‘truth’ within the ‘truth’. Wahhabism, which is the product of an eighteenth century revivalist movement, is portrayed as the most ‘authentic’ reading of Islam. It is seen as the raison d'être for the prevailing political mechanism in the country and is introduced as an example of truth management at the micro level.
Arguing that truth is not born in a power vacuum and often its construction and institutionalisation signify domination in one way or another, this book will be of interest to students of Religion, Politics, and Saudi Politics more specifically.

Cynical Futurities: A Critical Methodological Intervention Toward a Cynical GeographyRamnath, Leah A. 14 May 2024 (has links)
In this dissertation, I disentangle the Cynical figure – one who is capable of confronting structures of power by speaking truth to power – within a Westernized, Euro-centric discourse that authorizes the Cynic as an exceptionally powerful political subjectivity. Heeding the words of Sylvia Wynter, "…the Jester's role in the pursuit of human knowledge alternates with the Priest's role—transforming heresies into new orthodoxies, the contingent into modes of the Absolute." I recover the Cynic, once sutured to a distinctly Foucauldian discursive tradition to argue Black and Brown women function as contemporary Cynics using largely a Black Feminist theoretical framework. Drawing on biomythographies written by Black and Brown women, I future a Cynical discursive tradition in which the cynic is known by a different name. / Doctor of Philosophy / In this dissertation, I explore the practice of telling the truth as a political discourse that is reserved only for a select group of people. I look at the Ancient Greek philosophical school of Cynicism to understand how someone is given permission speak truth to power and its effects. Throughout this work, I argue that the Cynical practice of speaking truth to power is exclusive and that it is not worth making space for others to speak their truth in this same practice. Using a Black feminist theoretical framework, through the works of Sylvia Wynter, Katherine McKittrick, Christina Sharpe and others, I disrupt the status quo of how the truth must be spoken in order to be heard in the political realm. Moreover, I develop a different practice of speaking truth to power by contextualizing this practice from the family kitchen table. I think about how Black and Brown women, those who are violently elided from the political realm altogether, develop their own practice of speaking truth to power from the family kitchen table space. From this context, I think about how a person develops a critical consciousness in which they are given permission to speak their truth to power. I propose that Black and Brown women embody a radical political consciousness that has the ability to disrupt the status quo, that they are not only seen and heard, but their disruption leads to political change.

Metaphoric Truth: Seeing and Saying in Merleau-Ponty and Ricoeur, and a Broader Ethics Via ZuidervaartRead, Janet January 2010 (has links)
Artistic meaning via visual art and literary fiction is debated in modern aesthetic thought. Language is a cognitive component in postmodernist aesthetic projects. This thesis investigates Maurice Merleau-Ponty's and Paul Ricoeur's writings on painting and language, respectively, whose phenomenological aim is the revelation of being in works of the imagination in tandem with Lambert Zuidervaart's approach to artistic truth which opens the lifeworld to the biotic context of the earth. For him, imaginative disclosure is integral to techno-scientific and art realms. Embodiment, natality, and expression illuminate the problematic of meaning in forms of postmodern visual art. Metaphoric imagination and metaphor are used for metaphor is a principle of articulation, not a figure of speech. Aesthetic projects connect with the lifeworld in a hermeneutic circle of meaning.
