Emotional intelligence : attrition and attainment in nursing and midwifery education

Rankin, Robert F. January 2009 (has links)
Attrition in Higher Education continues to present academics, researchers and professionals with an ongoing dilemma. Achieving a fair balance between the academic rigour of meritocracy and the wider access agenda of social inclusion, demands that entrance criteria incorporates measures beyond the traditional prior academic attainment. Emotional Intelligence has been presented in the literature as a valid and reliable predictor of retention and performance in industry and researchers have suggested that similar benefits may be found in education. In this dissertation, the construct of Emotional Intelligence was explored, reviewing contemporary models and their respective measurement tools. A self report tool for measuring ‘trait’ Emotional Intelligence was selected from the review and used to examine the predictive relationship between emotional intelligence and the outcomes at the end of the first year of undergraduate nurse education namely: clinical practice performance; academic performance and course attrition by nursing and midwifery students. The sample group consisted of a cohort of student nurses and midwives (N = 178) who commenced their training in 2007. A significant predictive relationship was found between emotional intelligence and clinical practice performance (r = 0.75, N = 116, p < 0.05); emotional intelligence and academic performance (r = 0.16, N = 168, p < 0.05) and emotional intelligence and attrition (r = 0.31, N = 178, p < 0.05). Age was also found to predict attrition (r = 0.25, N = 178, p < 0.05) while prior academic attainment was found to predict academic performance (r = 0.20, N = 168, p < 0.05). The dissertation proposes the inclusion of measures of emotional intelligence as an aid to recruitment and selection processes in nurse and midwifery education. It also recommends that other practice based vocational programmes, within the higher education sector, consider exploring emotional intelligence in their recruitment and selection processes.

Bou-Rizk, Randa 12 1900 (has links)
In Lebanon, diabetes is estimated at 12%, it is expected to double by the year 2025. In front of this increase, it is relevant to assess the effects of an educational intervention with people with T2DM their sense self-efficacy and self-care capacity to make their most optimal therapeutic adherence. This study use an experimental design: before / after 3 months. Adherence was assessed using the HbA1c <7% and the SDSCA for self-care behaviors of DMSES for self-efficacy. The formed sample: 71 65 GE and GC. GE has improved the level of self-care behaviors, the implementation of recommendations, the feeling of self-efficacy and HbA1c. As a nurse education promotes adhesion among T2DM. This study could contribute to the development of nursing knowledge and renewal of clinical practices.

Objectives The goal of this study was to develop a new process, capable of targeting the main educational gaps of the healthcare professionals on their work, to execute focused educational interventions and to reassess the sample. Methods Interventional retrospective study. A web-based tool was developed to identify knowledge gaps, by generating multiple-choice tests, segmented by area, as well as correcting the test, mapping those gaps. Three assessments were performed, between 2013 and 2014, with a large group of healthcare professionals, on different hospitals, on a six-month interval between them. During those intervals, educational interventions were executed, focused on the identified gaps. We decided to demonstrate the average performance through the grades, exclusively for the healthcare professionals that participated in the three cycles of assessment and training. Results 3531 healthcare professionals participated on the three cycles and the average grades, sequentially, were: 6.591, 6.613 and 6.909. The statistical analysis was the ANOVA test, and we found significant correlation between the last two assessments. Conclusion The development of an assessment process, accompanied by mapping knowledge gaps and intertwined with educational interventions, has shown itself efficient in promoting knowledge development among healthcare professionals / Background A diversidade na formação dos profissionais de enfermagem em seus diferentes níveis (auxiliares, técnicos e enfermeiros), somando-se às pressões do mercado, obriga estes profissionais a realizarem múltiplas jornadas de trabalho, contribuindo para que o treinamento e as atualizações técnicas sejam relegados a um segundo plano.

Informování a edukace seniorů v rámci zdravotní péče / Information and education of senior patients in the frame of helth care.

Povolná, Pavla January 2014 (has links)
Information and education of senior patients in the frame of health care. This thesis focuses on informations providing by health care professionals to the seniors age patients/clients. I describe the contemporary situation in this field in the Czech republic, and define main attributes and conditions according to the historical, social, cultural and moral context in the theoretical part of thesis. I introduce the transmission and the acceptation of the information during the dialogue between a layperson and an expert in two basic levels: level of rules, especially an Inform consent, and level of an ethical discourse. I compare an atmosphere created by law and rules with human reactions, either as medical professionals, or as a patient. For the empirical section of the thesis, I describe and evaluate experiences of patients with information-giving by health care professionals. I have chosen qualitative method for the main body of my empirical research, which consists of semi-structured interviews with 20 patients. The collected data were cathegorised, analysed and then quantified and prepared for interpretation. The thesis includes not only the results of my research, but also examples of encounters with patients during my day-to-day nursing practice. Because the main goal of my thesis was to find...
