Analysis of user popularity pattern and engagement prediction in online social networks / Analyse du modèle de popularité de l'utilisateur et de la prédiction d'engagement en les réseaux sociaux en ligne

Mohammadi, Samin 04 December 2018 (has links)
The most significant change in people's behavior after emerging Online Social Networks (OSNs) is their communication method and its range. Having more connections on OSNs brings more attention and visibility to people, where it is called popularity on social media. Depending on the type of social network, popularity is measured by the number of followers, friends, retweets, likes, and all those other metrics that is used to calculate engagement. Studying the popularity behavior of users and published contents on social media and predicting its future status are the important research directions which benefit different applications such as recommender systems, content delivery networks, advertising campaign, election results prediction and so on. This thesis addresses the analysis of popularity behavior of OSN users and their published posts in order to first, identify the popularity trends of users and posts and second, predict their future popularity and engagement level for published posts by users. To this end, i) the popularity evolution of ONS users is studied using a dataset of 8K Facebook professional users collected by an advanced crawler. The collected dataset includes around 38 million snapshots of users' popularity values and 64 million published posts over a period of 4 years. Clustering temporal sequences of users' popularity values led to identifying different and interesting popularity evolution patterns. The identified clusters are characterized by analyzing the users' business sector, called category, their activity level, and also the effect of external events. Then ii) the thesis focuses on the prediction of user engagement on the posts published by users on OSNs. A novel prediction model is proposed which takes advantage of Point-wise Mutual Information (PMI) and predicts users' future reaction to newly published posts. Finally, iii) the proposed model is extended to get benefits of representation learning and predict users' future engagement on each other's posts. The proposed prediction approach extracts user embedding from their reaction history instead of using conventional feature extraction methods. The performance of the proposed model proves that it outperforms conventional learning methods available in the literature. The models proposed in this thesis, not only improves the reaction prediction models to exploit representation learning features instead of hand-crafted features but also could help news agencies, advertising campaigns, content providers in CDNs, and recommender systems to take advantage of more accurate prediction results in order to improve their user services

Performativité de l’être-en-ligne : pour une phénoménologie de la présence numérique / Performativity of on-ligne being : for a phenomenology of the digital presence

Cavallari, Giuseppe 06 November 2018 (has links)
Around the fundamental question of presence, I draw on interdisciplinary literature whose contributions from the fields of anthropology and social geography, theatre and cinema theory, performance studies, psychoanalysis and sociology are articulated from the perspective of phenomenology and information and communication sciences. Our way of inhabiting the world has changed: online-being is the new fundamental existential condition. Our space is a performative space, because it is produced through our actions, our gestures, eminently reflexive photographic gestures, which create our digital mise en scène. This space has become the space which links together all of our active and social spaces. Here, I single out live and recorded performativity, the performativity of do-ing, the performativity of algorithms and of questions, of emojis and of all that which “fait visage”. After a socio-semiotic analysis of digital gestures, screens, the graphics of social networks and presence protocols, I describe presence as always being a mediation effect. This mediation is at once disjunction and fiction, beacause it works as a difference and as the fiction of hypermediality. Presence exists where there is play (jeu) as in the french expression “il y a du jeu”, refering to space, and in its fictional sense of play-acting. As with Sartre's café waiter, we play act in order to create reality and consciousness through fiction.

Seed and Grow: An Attack Against Anonymized Social Networks

Peng, Wei 07 August 2012 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Digital traces left by a user of an on-line social networking service can be abused by a malicious party to compromise the person’s privacy. This is exacerbated by the increasing overlap in user-bases among various services. To demonstrate the feasibility of abuse and raise public awareness of this issue, I propose an algorithm, Seed and Grow, to identify users from an anonymized social graph based solely on graph structure. The algorithm first identifies a seed sub-graph either planted by an attacker or divulged by collusion of a small group of users, and then grows the seed larger based on the attacker’s existing knowledge of the users’ social relations. This work identifies and relaxes implicit assumptions taken by previous works, eliminates arbitrary parameters, and improves identification effectiveness and accuracy. Experiment results on real-world collected datasets further corroborate my expectation and claim.

Uses of facebook by youth in Vhembe District South Africa

Sundani, Ndivhuwo Doctor January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Media Studies) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / This study explored the uses of Facebook by youth in the Vhembe District Municipality of Limpopo Province, South Africa. It is exploratory qualitative research. The research sample consisted of twenty (20) respondents both 10 males and 10 females whose ages range between 18 and 29 years who are on Facebook. Purposive sampling was adopted for the study to sample the study population members. The method used to collect data was the structured interview. The data collected from research respondents were analysed in themes and sub-themes using texts and tables. The study found that Facebook is the most preferred social media by youth from the Vhembe District. The platform connects users irrespective of their geographical boundaries and promotes the level of interaction on social and entertaining issues. Facebook also enables the Vhembe District youth to search for jobs and also helps them to discuss their academic and sometimes political issues. Most of the Vhembe District youth prefer using Facebook to share recent information and create content such as pictures and videos with their friends when they are online. The Vhembe District youth also use the platform to entertain each other. The major problems faced by the Vhembe District Facebook users are that a majority of them become exposed to pictures and videos of sexual nature, cyberattack, cyberbullying and vulgar language whereas a minority become victims of account hacking and invasion of privacy. The research respondents came up with solutions to prevent social media challenges. A majority of respondents suggested that strong passwords, an increase in privacy, social media law implementation, social media campaigns and social media education can help prevent online challenges. A minority of students indicated that parental support, strong age restriction, adding known Facebook users, blocking, unfollowing and unfriending unwanted users can help to prevent challenges faced by Facebook users.

Adolescent's Social Networking Use and Its Relationship to Attachment and Mental Health

Woolford, Brittany 12 1900 (has links)
Adolescents spend much of their time using the internet and electronic media. Since its inception, the use of online social networking (OSN) sites by adolescents continues to grow. With the proliferation of OSN, it is critical to examine how this activity affects psychological development, but better measurement tools are needed. As researchers struggle to keep up with this rapidly growing field, many gaps remain in the literature investigating the interrelations between adolescent's OSN use and mental health outcomes. Research examining the relationship between OSN and mental health outcomes, specifically depression and anxiety, has produced mixed results suggesting that other factors influence this association. A large research literature documents associations between attachment and mental health. Given that attachment also affects interpersonal communication, several studies have investigated links between attachment and OSN use in adult and college populations. Results indicated that even though attachment to father was independently related to anxiety and depression symptoms, it was not a significant moderator for mental health and OSN. Attachment to mother was a significant moderator for anxiety and depression and several OSN subscales. Based on this information, a greater focus on youth's interpersonal connection and social skills both online and offline may be beneficial when treating adolescents experiencing anxiety or depression.

Sorting Tangles and Recognising Patterns : A Domain Analysis of Knowledge Organisation at Ravelry.com / Att reda ut härvor och känna igen mönster : En domänanalys av kunskapsorganisationen på Ravelry.com

Östbye, Maria January 2024 (has links)
Introduction: Ravelry is a website offering information and social media functions for people interested in knitting. All content is user-supplied, including thousands of searchable records of knitting patterns and yarns. The aim of this thesis is to describe the way these are organised and classified and how this relates to systems used in other contexts and to the expectations of site members regarding both presentation and search functions. Method: Based in domain analysis theory and the concept of serious leisure, the knitting community on Ravelry and its information databases were studied through content analysis of the website, a literature review of pattern and yarn presentation, and a user survey. Results and analysis: The presentation of products on the website contains the information expected within this domain. Users are generally satisfied with the information given but have come to expect more details here than from other sources. The search function enables specific searches, but is too complex for certain users and is sometimes seen as old-fashioned or hard to understand. Members express varying degrees of understanding of the website’s community base. Conclusion: Ravelry has set up a knowledge organisation system and presentation pages that meet its members’ expectations in terms of information content. The search function and layout is not as popular, but efficient for many respondents. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

: a study of new school librarians' information practices and workplace conditions

Rickhammar, Agnes January 2024 (has links)
My research illustrates new school librarians’ information practices by studying their critical examination of information and information seeking and how their workplace conditions impact their work situation in terms of the prerequisites for information and knowledge sharing. Interviews with ten new school librarians were conducted and recorded. The transcriptions were analyzed through qualitative thematic analysis where models of information seeking, organizational culture and information culture were used in order to concretize the social interplay of the information practices. The new school librarians used everyday life information seeking more than traditional search strategies. All of the participants expressed that their school did not prioritize media and literacy (MIL) work or that they did not prioritize it enough. All of the participants cooperated with other librarians both in person and through digital networks, hence the epithet herd animals. They conveyed that they too make source criticism mistakes and that transparency is part of source confidence. Eight participants described information seeking problems, such as pay walls and information overload. The professors’ information packed work is an interaction barrier for the new school librarians. The introductions at the schools pave the ground for information sharing. Schools are naturally hierarchical and market oriented. A relation based information culture benefits the school library’s inclusion. Reading is prioritized over MIL at the schools. This relates to the perception that a librarian only work with books, which can be changed through a well-developed cooperation between professors and librarians, active work from the librarians and the right resources for MIL work. Therefore the participants who worked at smaller schools and/or schools with a clan culture had a better chance to work with MIL. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Who is Really in Charge Here: An Exploration of the Formation and Empowerment of Opinion Leaders in a Reddit Gaming Community

Carter, Clinton Chase 12 1900 (has links)
In an attempt to shed light on the further sophistication of opinion leadership in online communities, this study examined the forces and structures that affect their formation in the League of Legends subreddit. By investigating what users thought about the various types of individuals with which the communicate, the researcher hoped to begin to understand and record how those forces work bother on this particular subreddit and in mass media beyond. Opinion leadership continues to be an integral force in deciding what information is consumed by a public and under what frames and agendas it is contextualized. If researchers can operationalize formal definitions for the influences and structures that occur online, they can better navigate the deep waters that are global communication on the internet.

Analyzing Tradeoffs between Privacy Concerns and Active Social Media Presence of 18- to 30-Year-Old College Students

Gadgil, Guruprasad Yashwant 08 1900 (has links)
This study applied the impression management theory in the context of social networking to investigate the generalized research question of this dissertation which is "Do active social media presence and various privacy concerns influence online behaviors of students on social media?" The results and conclusions are presented via the conduct of three different studies and the summary provides insights and explain the overall contribution of the research. For each study we developed a research model for which data was collected separately for each of these models. Hypotheses of each model were tested by partial least squares- structural equation modeling techniques using SmartPLS 2.0. Our findings confirm the hypotheses and showed that all the predictors positively influence online social networking behaviors. Active social media presence is operationalized as predictors such as SNS stalking awareness, Selective disclosure, desired differential persona, impression motivation, and information trustworthiness. Privacy concerns have been operationalized as SNS privacy awareness, technology awareness. Online behaviors have been operationalized as responsible image and reckless image.
