Výběr parfémů a jejich interakce s tělesnou vůní / Choice of perfumes and their interaction with body odour

The traditional assumption that perfumes are used only for masking of the body odour was doubted by the results of recent researches. In spite of the fact that the biological role of human body odour is very important, it is likely that perfumes are not in conflict with the body odour but there is mutual cooperation. Individuals could choose the scent which goes with their body odour instead of hiding it. In the theoretical part of this thesis I describe a dual inheritance theory, which is a basic concept for our research. We have been concerned with the interaction between biological effects of body odour and social effects of perfumes. Moreover, we have worked on the assumption that the body odour of relatives is similar. We have tested if people are better in their choice of the appropriate perfume for their relatives than for anyone else, in this case partners. Which perfume fits into which body odour was assessed by the independent evaluators of opposite sex because one of the main objectives of chemical signalling is to attract a potential partner. Surprisingly, the results of our research have shown that in the case of couples, the samples of the body odour and perfumes chosen by female partners were slightly better evaluated than the perfumes chosen by men themselves. Monitoring And Modeling To Estimate Hydrogen Sulfide Emissions And Dispersion From Florida Construction And Demolition Landfills To Construct Odor Buffering Distances

Emissions of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from construction and demolition (C & D) landfills can result in odors that are a significant nuisance to nearby neighborhoods and businesses. As Florida’s population continues to grow and create development pressures, housing is built closer to existing landfills. Additionally, new landfills will be created in the future. This research project was undertaken to develop a detailed modeling methodology for use by counties and other landfill owners to provide them with an objective and scientifically defensible means to establish odor buffer zones around C & D landfills. A technique for estimating methane (and odorous gas) emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills was recently developed by researchers at the University of Central Florida. This technique was based on measuring hundreds of ambient methane concentrations near the surface of the landfill, and combining that data with matrix inversion mathematics to back-solve the dispersion equations. The technique was fully documented in two peer-reviewed journal articles. This project extends that methodology. In this work the author measured ambient H2S concentrations at various locations in a C & D landfill, and applied those same matrix inversion techniques to determine the H2S emission rates from the landfill. The emission rates were then input into the AERMOD dispersion model to determine H2S odor buffer distances around the landfill. Three sampling trips to one C & D landfill were undertaken, data were taken, and the modeling techniques were applied. One problem encountered was that H2S emissions from C & D landfills are typically about 1000 times smaller than methane emissions (from MSW landfills). Thus, H2S iv ambient concentrations often are near the detection limits of the instruments, and the data may not be as reliable. However, this approach could be used for any particular C & D landfill if the appropriate amount of data were available to characterize its emissions with some certainty. The graphical tool developed in this work shows isopleths of "H2S" concentrations at various distances, and color codes the isopleths into a "green-yellow-red" scheme (analogous to a traffic signal) that depicts zones where private landowners likely will not detect odors, where they may experience some odors, or where they likely will experience odors. The "likelihood" can be quantified by selecting the Nth highest hourly concentrations in one year to form the plot. In this study, N was conservatively selected as 8. Requiring that concentrations be at or below the 8 th highest concentration in a year corresponds to a 99.9% probability of not exceeding that concentration at that distance in any future year. The graphical tool can be applied to any C & D landfill but each landfill is different. So this technique depends on having a fairly good estimate of the rate of emissions of H2S from the landfill in question, and at least one year’s worth of hourly meteorological data (wind speed, direction, and stability class) that is representative of the landfill location. The meteorological data can be obtained with relative ease for most locations in Florida; however, the emission data must be obtained from on-site measurements for any given landfill.

Making sense of smell : classifications and model thinking in olfaction theory

This thesis addresses key issues of scientific realism in the philosophy of biology and chemistry through investigation of an underexplored research domain: olfaction theory, or the science of smell. It also provides the first systematic overview of the development of olfactory practices and research into the molecular basis of odours across the 19th and 20th century. Historical and contemporary explanations and modelling techniques for understanding the material basis of odours are analysed with a specific focus on the entrenchment of technological process, research tradition and the definitions of materiality for understanding scientific advancement. The thesis seeks to make sense of the explanatory and problem solving strategies, different ways of reasoning and the construction of facts by drawing attention to the role and application of scientific representations in olfactory practices. Scientific representations such as models, classifications, maps, diagrams, lists etc. serve a variety of purposes that range from the stipulation of relevant properties and correlations of the research materials and the systematic formation of research questions, to the design of experiments that explore or test particular hypotheses. By examining a variety of modelling strategies in olfactory research, I elaborate on how I understand the relation between representations and the world and why this relation requires a pluralist perspective on scientific models, methods and practices. Through this work I will show how a plurality of representations does not pose a problem for realism about scientific entities and their theoretical contexts but, on the contrary, that this plurality serves as the most reliable grounding for a realistic interpretation of scientific representations of the world and the entities it contains. The thesis concludes that scientific judgement has to be understood through its disciplinary trajectory, and that scientific pluralism is a direct consequence of the historicity of scientific development.

Estudio de otros compuestos relacionados con la presencia de olor sexual no atribuible al escatol y a la 5@-Androst-16-en-3-ona en grasa dorsal de cerdo

En el presente trabajo de tesis se evalúa la posible contribución de otros compuestos al desarrollo del olor sexual mediante la aplicación de técnicas de Head Space dinámico y cromatografía de filtración de gel. El estudio se efectuó en canales de cerdos enteros previamente clasificadas con concentraciónes bajas de escatol (<0,10 µg /g) y androstenona (0,50 µg/ g) , aunque presentaban , según las respuestas de un panel sensorial, olor sexual. La selección de muestras de grasa clasificadas sin olor sexual permitió la comparación estadística de los resultados obtenidos. El análisis de los compuestos volátiles mostró una mayor abundancia de aldehidos (hexanal, heptanal), ácidos grasos de cadena corta (hexanoico, heptanico nonanoico), 1,4-diclorobenceno y estireno en las muestras de grasa con defecto organoléptico, ue puede, debido a los atributos sensoriales de estas sustancias y sus bajos umbrales de detección, favorecer el desarrollo de aromas desagradables asociados al olor sexual por los miembros de un papel sensorial. El análisis de las fracciones obtenidas por filtración de gel mediante cromatografía de gases acoplada a la espectometría de masas permitió la identificación de la 4-fenil-3-buten-2-ona en las muestras clasificadas con olor sexual y concentraciones bajas de escatol y androstenona, que junto a los resultados obtenidos en el estudio sensorial, indican una influencia de este compuesto en el olor sexual. Por una parte la 4-fenil-3-buten-2-ona presentaría una acción sinérgica con la androstenona al potenciar su detección por parte de los panelistas a concentraciones inferiores de 0,01µg/g. Además, el olor a naftalina que presenta la 4-fenil-3-buten-2-ona puede confundir a los miembros del panel debido a que es uno de los descriptores sensoriales que se asocia con la presencia de escatol en las muestras de grasa evaluadas. Así mismo, la baja transferencia a la fase vapor del escatol y, especialmente, de la androstenona determinada mediante técnicas de Head Space estático, indica que la concentración de cada uno de los compuestos en la fase vapor no se corresponde con la concentración real en las muestras de grasa . Según estos resultados, las respuestas del panel test pueden estar influenciadas por la poca volatilidad de los compuestos implicados en el olor sexual y por la presencia en la fase vapor de otros compuestos aromáticos de mayor volatilidad.La validación de métodos de análisis para la determinación de indol-escatol y androstenona-androstenoles en grasa dorsal porcina mediante cromatografía líquida en fase normal y cromatografía de gases acoplada a la espectrometría de masas, respectivamente, fue otro de los objetivos planteados del presente estudio. La simplificación del tratamiento de las muestras de grasa fue uno de los aspectos analíticos que se tuvo en mayor consideración con la finalidad de ofrecer una mayor capacidad de muestras en un intervalo de tiempo corto.

Cost-benefit analysis of the environmental impacts of Darvill Wastewater Works, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

Darvill Wastewater Works (DWWW) receives and treats both domestic and industrial wastewater from the city of Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu-Natal. Sludge from the wastewater treatment is sprayed onto surrounding lands, causing odour and fly problems. The plant also discharges treated effluent into the Msunduzi River, compromising water quality. This study uses several economic valuation techniques to estimate the value of the benefits of improving air and water quality to overcome these problems caused by DWWW. The benefits. are then compared with the costs of upgrading DWWW to see whether or not upgrading DWWW to improve air and water quality would be worthwhile. The Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) was used to elicit people's willingness to pay (WTP) for improvements in air quality due to the elimination of odours and flies caused by sludge deposited by DWWW. The WTP estimates reflect individual's preferences for improvements in air quality. The stated WTP amounts were positively related to household income, but negatively related to the age and gender of the respondent and the number of dependants in the household. The mean monthly WTP for the surveyed households is higher for those that are closer to the pollution source (R23.00 and R29.00 for Zones land 2) and less for those further away (RI4.00 for Zone 3). Sobantu residential area had the lowest mean monthly WTP (R18.00), followed by Lincoln Meade (R27.00) and Hayfields (R54.00). This is expected, as Sobantu has relatively high levels of unemployment and lower household incomes. Strategic, hypothetical and free rider bias may have led to the unexpected signs of some estimated regression coefficients in linear regression models used to estimate WTP. The mean WTP was estimated as R307.20 per annum per household, and when this is aggregated over the total population in the residential areas impacted by odours and flies (37192 households), the benefits of eliminating odours and flies are estimated as R11 425 382.00 per annum. A hedonic price method was used to quantify the decline in property values as a result of odours and flies caused by sludge deposited by DWWW. Properties experienced a R6650.08 decline in selling price if the distance from them to DWWW is decreased by one kilometre. Properties that are closer to DWWW were worth RI5 953.90 less than those further away from DWWW. Aggregating these values over all estimated impacted households in the study, gives an estimated benefit of improving air quality of R28 480 518.00 per annum. The impact of water pollution was quantified by estimating the revenue (R3 744 975.00) that would be lost by Pietermaritzburg if the Duzi Canoe Marathon were to be cancelled due to incidences of diarrheoa reported during the race. A cost of illness procedure was adopted to quantify the effect of water pollution on the health of communities that use the Msunduzi River as a source of potable water supply. A value of R1 243 372.50 was estimated as the annual cost of water-related illnesses in these rural areas. This value represents the costs of the river pollution to those communities. Both of these exercises indicated that improving water quality of the Msunduzi River would be beneficial to society. The effect of nutrient enrichment of the Msunduzi River was quantified by estimating the cost of removing water hyacinth from the Inanda Dam, treatment cost at Wiggins water treatment works and the value of recreation at Mahlabathini Park (Inanda Dam). The annual cost of removing water hyacinth was estimated from the direct costs of chemicals and labour as R47 202.15. The increased treatment costs at Wiggins attributable to DWWW were estimated as R1 104 999.20 and R956 924.15 per annum for removal of algae, and tastes and odours, respectively. The value of R706.90 per annum was estimated as the consumer surplus accruing to recreationists, and, therefore, the value of recreation at Mahlabathini Park to an individual. These annual benefits, when aggregated over the total study population (296 590) were over two hundred million rands (R209 659 470.00). The estimated total benefits (R256 662 840.00) of eliminating odours and flies and effluent problems were compared to the actual costs of two alternative methods of upgrading DWWW using cost-benefit analysis. These alternatives were co-disposal option (R170 473 320) and a land disposal option (R168 809377). Benefit-cost ratios of 1.51 and 1.52 suggest that from society's standpoint, it would be beneficial to upgrade the plant in order to eliminate its adverse environmental impacts. The study results have important implications for policy makers, both the DWWW management and the Pietermaritzburg-TLC municipality. At present DWWW is operating beyond its design capacity, and this problem, together with the poor status of Pietermaritzburg's reticulation system, causes overflow of untreated or compromised final effluent into the Msunduzi River during rainy seasons. These problems also impact on the efficient operation of the plant as the sludge is not properly digested before being sprayed onto surrounding land. Thus to prevent further environmental degradation, a fundamental basis of the National Environmental Management Act, DWWW would need to address these issues. For water suppliers, using chlorine is necessary to ensure water bacteriological quality from the treatment plant to the consumers' tap. However, chlorine flavour is one of the most common reasons advocated for choosing tap water alternatives as drinking water. As a consequence, the putative link between chlorine flavour perception and tap water consumption is an issue in drinking water habits studies. Since the sensory mechanisms involved in chlorine flavour perception remained largely unknown, the main objective of this thesis work was to first highlight those mechanisms and then to identify potential lever chlorine flavour sensory neutralisation.In a first step, we demonstrated that hypochlorous acid associated, which is likelyresponsible of chlorine flavour in tap water, could activate the olfactory system at low concentrations and the trigeminal system for concentrations up to 4 mg/L Cl2. Additionally, our results suggested that tap water consumption does not seem to be related to sensitivity to chlorine flavour but rather to consumers' tap water representation.In a second stage, we explored the impact of water mineral matrix on chlorine flavour perception. We demonstrated first that water molarity and cationic content variations modulate drinking water taste. We also evidenced that chlorine flavour intensity is modulated according to water composition. Nevertheless, our data suggest that physico-chemical, in- mouth physiological and sensory mechanisms are likely involved in such modulation.In the last part of the Thesis work, we investigate the putative influence of aroma perceptionon chlorine flavour. Our results showed that beyond chemical reactions between hypochlorous acid and odorants, aromas at peri-threshold concentration enhance chlorine flavour and decrease tap water acceptability

Pollinator-mediated selection, reproductive isolation and the evolution of floral traits in Ophrys (Orchidaceae)

Cette thèse aborde l’écologie et l’évolution des relations qu’entretiennent les orchidées du genre Ophrys avec leurs pollinisateurs. L’approche comparative et la combinaison (i)<p>d’analyses chimiques de phéromones sexuelles et de parfums floraux, (ii) d’analyses génétiques avec des outils moléculaires, et (ii) de tests de comportement réalisés sur les insectes in situ nous ont permis d’éclairer certains aspects méconnus de ces interactions inter-spécifiques. La pollinisation des orchidées du genre Ophrys est assurée par des mâles d'abeilles ou de guêpes solitaires qui opèrent une tentative d’accouplement (pseudocopulation) sur le labelle des fleurs. L'attraction des pollinisateurs est généralement hautement spécifique, régie par un mimétisme des signaux (chimiques, visuels, tactiles) des femelles des espèces d'insectes concernés. Malgré cette spécificité, des hybrides se forment occasionnellement en conditions naturelles, témoignant de la perméabilité partielle des barrières d'isolement reproductif entre espèces. Au cours de<p>ce programme de recherche, nous avons entrepris l’étude des interactions Ophryspollinisateurs en mettant l’accent sur trois aspects spécifiques, à savoir (i) la sélection des caractères floraux par les pollinisateurs, (ii) l'isolement reproductif entre espèces d'Ophrys sympatriques, et enfin (iii) l'évolution des caractères floraux au sein d'un complexe d'espèces-soeurs d'Ophrys associées à différents pollinisateurs. Chlorine flavor perception and neutralization in drinking water / Perception et neutralisation de la flaveur chlore dans l'eau de boisson

Pour les distributeurs d’eau, l’utilisation de chlore permet d’assurer la qualité bactériologique de l’eau, de l’usine de traitement au robinet du consommateur. Cependant, la flaveur chlore constitue une des plaintes les plus importantes adressée à l’encontre de l’eau du robinet et constitue donc un enjeu majeur de satisfaction des consommateurs. Dans ce contexte, l’objectif des travaux engagés dans cette thèse a été de mettre en évidence des moyens potentiels de neutralisation sensorielle de la flaveur chlore dans l’eau. Néanmoins, les mécanismes impliqués dans la perception de cette flaveur étant largement méconnu, notre première étape a consisté à préciser la nature de ces mécanismes. Nos résultats ont ainsi mis en évidence que l’acide hypochloreux sous sa forme associée, qui est le stimulus supposé de la flaveur chlore dans l’eau, active le système olfactif à faibles concentrations et le système trigéminal à partir de 4 mg/L. De plus, nous avons observé que la consommation d’eau du robinet ne semble pas liée à la sensibilité au chlore mais plutôt à la représentation qu’ont les consommateurs de l’eau du robinet. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons exploré le rôle de la matrice de l’eau dans la perception de la flaveur chlore. Nous avons d’abord montré que les variations de molarité et de composition en cations de l’eau modulent le goût de l’eau. Nous avons ensuite mis en évidence une modulation de l’intensité chlorée en fonction de la matrice minérale de l’eau. Cependant, nos données suggèrent l’existence de mécanismes multiples, physicochimiques, physiologiques en bouche et sensoriels, susceptibles de moduler la perception de la flaveur chlore. Enfin, nous avons exploré les interactions perceptives entre un arôme supposé neutralisant et ajouté à l’eau de boisson et la flaveur chlore. Nos résultats montrent que l’ajout d’un arôme à un niveau péri-liminaire augmente la perception de la flaveur chlore et diminue l’acceptabilité des consommateurs. Analýza těkavých látek lidského tělesného pachu pomocí komprehenzivní dvoudimenzionální plynové chromatografie / Analysis of a human body odour using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography

Body odour perception plays an important role in human mate choice, especially in women. It was previously proposed that women select partners whose body odour resembles that of woman's fathers. Yet, this phenomenon has only been confirmed using ethological studies based on subjective perception of body odour similarities. Therefore, the aim of my diploma thesis was to test this hypothesis instrumentally using comprehensive GC×GC-TOFMS and subsequent multidimensional analyses of body odour chemical profiles of male partners and fathers of adult women. Body odour sampling from left and right axilla of fathers and partners of 41 women (altogether 164 samples) was performed using cotton swabs, which were then frozen and extracted into hexane. Typical human volatile substances, such as hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, esters, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, sterols and terpenes were detected in all examined samples. Using a newly available "tile-based" chromatographic alignment algorithm, we obtained a set of 341 compounds systematically occurring in male axillary odour. The principal component analysis was used to calculate Euclidean distances for all pairs of the studied male subjects. The main body of the thesis deals with selected factors underlying the considerable variability in human olfactory abilities and some odour awareness-related measures, addressed in samples ranging in age from middle childhood to young adulthood. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part (Chapter 1), first presents the major advances and developments that brought about something of a renaissance of scientific interest in the human sense of smell, including the recent proliferation of psychophysical studies, both basic research and clinical. Next, an outline of olfactory psychophysical measures and related olfactory abilities that are of relevance to the studies presented in this thesis is provided. Subsequently, the selected factors contributing to interindividual differences in olfactory abilities, that have been addressed by this thesis, are reviewed, namely the effect of sex (or gender), which is approached from a developmental perspective, childhood gender nonconformity, and personality. Finally, intraindividual fluctuations in olfactory performance are also mentioned in brief.
