CBD office location patterns : a Vancouver case study

Takahashi, David Leslie January 1972 (has links)
Beginning from the premise that there is a positive correlation between form and process, this study undertakes to uncover patterns of office location in the Vancouver CBD. It is hypothesized that intra-CBD location of offices reflect the functional or interactive relationships that exist between offices. It is possible to infer the existence of linkages by identifying groups or sets of office types which are typically found in close physical proximity. Two main statistical techniques are utilized in the case study: principal components analysis and grouping analysis. The former is used to identify groups of office types which exhibit tendencies to locate in close proximity; the latter to identify sub-areas in the CBD where the clustering of interrelated office types is most conspicuous. The results, although generally consistent with the hypothesis, cannot be regarded as conclusive as direct confirmation of the hypothesis is not possible. The results are, however, encouraging and indicate the need for additional research in this important, but often neglected, area of urban location theory / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

An Analytical Study of Word Processing in Selected Administrative Offices at Utah State University

Nielson, Lynnette T. 01 May 1975 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze the word processing procedures in the offices of the President and Provost at Utah State University. Seven secretaries participated in the survey by completing a questionnaire and keeping a record of all typing and nontyping tasks performed during two nonconsecutive weeks. A combined total of 9035 lines (average 12 words per line) of typing was completed by all workers. Ninety-nine percent of the typing was classified as text in format and originated in one of several ways including: copy type, shorthand, revision, self composition, machine dictation, and longhand. Recommendations based on the data collected were made regarding the word processing system analyzed. Recommendations included the implementation of a semi-consolidated word processing system and the addition of standardized dictating equipment and a magnetic medium typewriter.

Rethinking the wall

Lindblad, Mika January 2023 (has links)
Interior walls are one of the biggest environmental culprits in office renovations. With this project I want to consider a new way to radically alter the layout of public spaces without producing waste.  The purpose of this project is to investigate the potential for using brickwork as an inspiration for adaptable walls in offices and public spaces. I will explore how sustainable, lightweight materials such as hemp or wool can be used to create lightweight “bricks” with acoustic properties. These bricks are assembled in an accordion-like structure that allows the wall to be extended, folded and to create various shapes.  By rethinking the interior wall, I have created a circular system of semi-permanent walls that can transform offices, workspaces and meeting rooms at will, and allows for an affordable and sustainable alternative to costly and disruptive renovations. With a leasing system the walls are part of a circular business model. Using brickwork as an inspiration, and a way to connect innovations to architectural history, this project explores the possibilities inherent in the modularity of bricks.

Lotsen - Ett stadsdelshus i Spångastadsdelshus i Spånga

Luckhurst, Julian January 2020 (has links)
The project was about the designing and development of a public building, specifically a new district building in Spånga, with both offices and public spaces. The objective was to develop and interpret a specified program and putting the building in a local context as well as having a clear architectural feel. The building is intended to serve as a meeting place between the staff of the district's departments and the local citizens, but also to encourage meetings between local residents. The project would also address spatial relationships and issues around the building versus places, function, organization, sustainability and communication, as well as how public buildings are perceived democratically.

First will be presented an over view of the offices occupancy concepts evolution, which has proliferated in United States and Europe, and that are the basis of the actual concepts. Following it will be presented a short description of the corporate office buildings in São Paulo and its internal arrangement, focusing on the business districts that concentrates these buildings in the city. Following will be demonstrated how the occupancy concepts were implemented in the American and Brazilian IBM offices, for further analysis and better understanding of the case of study. Finally, the IBM Tutóia building will be presented emphasizing it conception, architecture, occupancy changes throughout the years, population density increase and their consequences. Due to the fast launching of new technology and the constant changes in the way of working, new types of spaces are required all the time. In this manner, the purpose of this research is to establish concepts for the analysis of the future corporate buildings transformation. Action research on leadership style, and relationships in an East London law firm

Stoltz, Tania January 2008 (has links)
"Good leadership springs from a genuine passion for the work and a genuine concern for other people. Great Leaders are people who love what they do and want to share that love with others. " (Daft, 2005:20). During an informal discussion with my husband Hugo Daniels, the leader in this Action Research Case Study, it became apparent that lawyers do not attend a single module or complete a single subject during their formal training at university to obtain their law degree that is related to the field of leadership and how to lead, inspire and motivate followers. The discussion centered on the problems the leader was experiencing in his East London law firm, problems he believed to be as a result of his lack of knowledge in the field of leadership. And so this research project began. It was obvious from the start that to intervene in the firm in order to bring about change would need the participation of everyone in the firm. The first step towards facilitating change would be to change the leadership style of the director of the firm. He would be required to gain knowledge in the field of leadership and the effects that different leadership styles have on followers. At the same time staff's perception of the current leadership style would have to be determined, as well as the desired style for their leader. The research process could then begin, based on the needs expressed by the staff and with participation from all levels in the firm. The case involved 27 members of staff made up of three heads of departments, twenty three general staff members and the leader. Data was gathered through formal interviews with the leader and the heads of departments, as well as from personal journals kept by two heads of departments and the leader. General staff members were first asked to complete The Productive Practice Survey (Hall 1987) to determine their perceptions of the current leadership style in the firm and what they thought they needed from their leader if the firm is to move forward. The Productive Practice Survey (Hall 1987) was not used with the intention of gathering quantitative data, but rather as a means of gathering information of staff's perception in general while ensuring anonymity, so as to facilitate a discussion during a feedback session. The Productive Survey's (Hall 1987) content and working is explained in further detail in Chapter 3 on page 44. Initially participants were skeptical of the process and used the survey as a medium to lash out against the firm and Hugo Daniels as a leader, leaving no room for suggestions for improvement, an "it is what it is" approach. During the feedback session general staff members became more open when they realized that change would benefit them, as changes would be suggested by them and implemented with their participation. They became less reluctant about change and provided valuable input during the session. All participants understood that this Participatory Action Research intervention was only the beginning of change in the firm and the sustainability of the changes rests on the firm as a whole, and working towards it would be a continuous process not ending with the Participatory Action Research process.
