Campus Climate, Racial Threat, and the Model Minority Stereotype: Asian Americans on a College Campus Following Sensational CrimesBall, Daisy Barbara 01 March 2017 (has links)
This study measures the campus climate for Asian Americans on a college campus before and after tragic events, and places it in the context of what is known about the social location of Asian American students nationally. Using a multi-method approach, including in-depth interviews supplemented by data from content analyses and surveys, it addresses perceptions of Asian American students about themselves and the campus climate. In doing so it addresses the more general question of minority stereotyping and strategies taken by minority groups to compensate for such stereotypes. Findings from this study suggest that the campus climate for Asian American undergraduates appears to be welcoming, and respondents do not report stress emanating from their 'model minority' status. Instead, they embrace and offer full-support for the 'model minority' stereotype. / Ph. D. / This study measures the campus climate for Asian Americans in higher education. In doing so it addresses the question of minority stereotyping and strategies taken by minority groups to compensate for such stereotypes. Findings from this study suggest that the campus climate for Asian American undergraduates appears to be welcoming; counter to the much of the literature in Asian American studies, this study suggests that the “model minority” stereotype can have positive outcomes for those to whom it is applied.

Hostmanship - the art of making people feel welcome. Hostmanship is becoming a very important tool for organisations around the world and can be vital for a company’s survival. During our Bachelor of Arts-degree in becoming professional Experience producers we realized that hostmanship is as important on a professional level as in every-day life which is why we took an interest in integrating experience production with hostmanship in our daily school environment. The purpose of this essay is to create a hostmanship model for Campus Piteå based on the experience production model TEM-Total Experience Management. The study is based on a semi-qualitative semi-structured interview with a key figure at Luleå University of Technology who is in charge of the hostmanship at the university’s different campuses. Two focus groups with students from different courses at Campus Piteå has also been completed. It was revealed during the interview and the focus groups that the hostmanship the university wanted to convey was not experienced in the same way by the students at Campus Piteå. We have therefore, in sub study three, used Gap-analysis as a tool to create a hostmanship modified version of TEM, based on the results of the interview and the focus groups.

EXAMINING CAMPUS CRIME AT VIRGINIA’S COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIESBarnes, Christina M. 04 May 2009 (has links)
This dissertation examines reported campus crime at Virginia’s institutions of higher education. Utilizing secondary data and content analysis, the research seeks to determine the amount and types of crime occurring on Virginia campuses and which correlates explain such crimes. Three sources of campus crime statistics are included and scrutinized in detail, including the Clery Act statistics, Virginia Incident-Based Reporting statistics and campus crime logs. Regardless of data source, findings indicate that the vast majority of reported campus crime is comprised of property offenses. The research argues to separate analyses by campus police departments versus campus security departments for more meaningful findings. For multivariate analysis, the study employs campus crime logs as the outcome measure for reported campus crime. The results indicate that, in all models, percentage of students living on campus significantly contributes to the explanation and prediction of total, violent/personal, and property crime log offenses reported per 100 students at institutions with either campus police departments or security departments. Additionally, percentage male enrollment was found to significantly contribute to violent/personal offenses reported per 100 students at institutions with campus police departments. Implications of findings and recommendations for policy and future research are discussed.

Restorative campus landscapes: fostering education through restorationGutierrez, Josef January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture / Laurence A. Clement, Jr. / Restorative landscapes are a growing trend within health care environments and can have a lasting impact on people if applied within other settings, particularly higher education campuses. Their design captures the many healing qualities of nature that humans are instinctively attracted to (Heerwagen, 2011). Within restorative landscapes, people have been historically found to experience relief of stress, improved morale, and improved overall well-being (Barnes et al., 1999). While campus planning standards do consider the outdoor environment as an extension of the classroom, higher education campuses can do more to utilize the cognitive benefits of nature for students, faculty and staff.
This project explores principles and theories of restorative landscape design, empirical psychological research, and campus design to develop a framework that facilitates the creation of restorative campus spaces on higher education campuses. In partnership with the Office of Design and Construction Management at the University of Kansas, the framework was subsequently applied through the design of the landscape for the Center for Design Research on the KU campus.
In the context of current campus planning challenges, restorative landscape design is a potentially valuable strategy in strengthening the beneficial roles and efficacy of the campus landscape. This design project explores its application to envision places within a higher education campus that, along with other benefits, relieve stress for students, faculty and staff.

Intervenções contemporâneas em espaços universitários / Contemporary interventions in university spacesGraner, Mônica Mascarenhas 26 April 2017 (has links)
As a center for the production of knowledge, the University mirrors the social, cultural, historical and economic contexts that characterize the complex web of political choices and conflicts among public and private entities, and society at large. The university is the engine of urban transformation because it re-qualifies the urban fabric in which it is strategically located. Its urbanistic and architectural project ought to synthesize the dynamics of power, conflict, and challenges into the built environment. This dissertation is a case study for this process, examining the creation of Universidade Federal do ABC (Federal University of the ABC region) - UFABC - in 2004. UFABC was conceived with the well-defined ideological mission of becoming a strategic urban equipment for the cities that comprise the grande ABC (designation for the conurbated cities of Santo André, São Bernardo, and São Caetano, which are adjecent to the metropolitan area of São Paulo). This experiment in federal public policy was aimed at democratizing, expanding, and improving the quality of higher education through a new pedagogical project specifically designed for the 21st Century. At the regional and municipal levels it is an architectural and urbanistic milestone that aims to promote social inclusion and re-qualify and intensify urban space and life. While UFABC strove to renew the prevailing university campus models, the end result is that many possibilities remain unfulfilled ideological projects, and the relationship between the university and the city is not always symbiotic. By reviewing the implementation process and its context, this research provides a critique through the lens of theoretical frameworks concerned with contemporary architecture and urbanism.

Brazil was the pioneer in the consolidation of a school of modern architecture a style that that spread through a group of architects, among them Jorge Machado Moreira, who has appropriated the concepts of modernist Le Corbusier, translating them into work and seeking synthesis between the modern and local conditions. College campuses are a category of modernist projects, through its analysis that can verify the timing of a particular social season. The research discusses the unfolding of the topic in a specific context within the city. It is a city within a city, constituting an urban microcosm. This urban microcosm is to the University City University of Brazil, currently UFRJ, located on Fundão Island, whose urban plan and design of some buildings designed by arquitect Jorge Machado Moreira in the 50s. While the first part of the work is focused on the historical knowledge of "campuses" and its evolution, the focus of the study focuses on the initial plan of the University City University of Brazil (1949-1952), considered the most corbusian, the first version (1954) and also the analysis, we proceed to the references used by Jorge Machado Moreira for the design of University City. Finally, delves into three case studies designed by Jorge Machado Moreira on the island: the University Stadium (not running), the University Hospital and Center for Technology. Due to today’s topic, the study of University City University of Brazil represents an exemplary precedent in the latin american context, along with the City University of Venezuela and Mexico. This opens up the way for the research that follows, in view of the ideal “campus as synthesis and “testing of modern urbanism.
