Levantou ainda a
This dissertation aims to analise the link between the institutional management of physical
and spatial heritage of the Federal University of Pernambuco and its conservation, based on
the institution's current state of integrity. To examine so, the author performed historical
research into the evolution through the years of the national institutional policy concerning
public higher education since the founding of the first Brazillian university, as well as the
institutional development of the Federal University of Pernambuco, since the creation of the
University of Recife and the conception of the Joaquim Amazonas campus. The author also
highlighted the institutional management of the Federal University of Pernambuco's
historical configuration in relation to the Joaquim Amazonas campus and sought to
comprehend its condition of physical and spatial integrity to establish a connection between
these items, under the strengh of all the raised information. The reasearch is based on the
integrated urban conservation theory, supported by the international principles of
conservation and on the concepts that regard the administration of heritage. The research
methodology was structured in a way to investigate the institutional configuration of UFPE
through historical survey of documentary sources and its patrimony, including the formation
of the university's management, and the diagnosis of the university's physical infrastructure
as a determining factor to the expression of valuation of the good that needs to be
conserved. With the investigation, it was possible to determine the relation of influence that
the administration of the Joaquim Amazonas campus has had throughout the years over its
state of integrity, which culminated in the campus's infrastructure degradation.

Intervenções contemporâneas em espaços universitários / Contemporary interventions in university spacesMônica Mascarenhas Graner 26 April 2017 (has links)
As a center for the production of knowledge, the University mirrors the social, cultural, historical and economic contexts that characterize the complex web of political choices and conflicts among public and private entities, and society at large. The university is the engine of urban transformation because it re-qualifies the urban fabric in which it is strategically located. Its urbanistic and architectural project ought to synthesize the dynamics of power, conflict, and challenges into the built environment. This dissertation is a case study for this process, examining the creation of Universidade Federal do ABC (Federal University of the ABC region) - UFABC - in 2004. UFABC was conceived with the well-defined ideological mission of becoming a strategic urban equipment for the cities that comprise the grande ABC (designation for the conurbated cities of Santo André, São Bernardo, and São Caetano, which are adjecent to the metropolitan area of São Paulo). This experiment in federal public policy was aimed at democratizing, expanding, and improving the quality of higher education through a new pedagogical project specifically designed for the 21st Century. At the regional and municipal levels it is an architectural and urbanistic milestone that aims to promote social inclusion and re-qualify and intensify urban space and life. While UFABC strove to renew the prevailing university campus models, the end result is that many possibilities remain unfulfilled ideological projects, and the relationship between the university and the city is not always symbiotic. By reviewing the implementation process and its context, this research provides a critique through the lens of theoretical frameworks concerned with contemporary architecture and urbanism.

A Quantitative Analysis of Crime Rates in American Colleges and Universities With and Without Residential College Systems.Fleenor, Mavis Winona 09 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the residential college system to determine if there was any association between campus crime and the residential house system. The specific problem of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the residential college system in mitigating campus violence. The intent of this study was to analyze the statistical relationship between crime reports from colleges and universities where on-campus housing was structured into residential colleges or house systems and crime reports from comparable colleges and universities without the residential design. Data collection consisted of a Web-based nationwide survey conducted annually by the U.S. Department of Education. Data collected for this study were for 2006. The 2 groups of institutions that made up the population for this study were 27 colleges that incorporated some variation of the residential college system or house system matched with 27 comparable institutions without the residential system.
The results indicated there were significant differences between institutions with residential college systems and those without such systems for the on-campus aggravated assault offenses and the on campus residence halls aggravated assault offenses. Findings showed fewer aggravated assaults in the group of institutions with residential college systems. A 3rd statistically significant difference was found in the category of arrests for the on-campus residence halls liquor law violations, with the group of nonresidential institutions showing fewer arrests than those without the residential college housing design.

The impact of campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging on the persistence decisions of students at a rural community collegeHenry, Crystal T 01 May 2020 (has links)
Community college students are often excluded from persistence studies due to the unique characteristics of community colleges and its students. Recent studies have heavily relied on retention models that do not adequately account for the role individual and campus culture plays in students’ persistence decisions. Using Museus’ (2014) Culturally Engaging Campus Environment (CECE) model, this cross-sectional, correlational study examined the impact of campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging on the persistence decisions of students at a rural community college in the southeastern part of the U.S. Correlation analyses were conducted to investigate the relationships between two independent variables, campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging, and one dependent variable, students’ persistence decisions. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if differences in campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging existed between racial and gender identity groups. Lastly, a t-test was conducted to examine differences between residential and commuter students. Utilizing the CECE Survey for Community Colleges (Museus et al., 2017), a total of 234 responses were analyzed. The results revealed that students are more likely to persist when they have a positive perception of the campus environment. It also revealed that students were more likely to persist when they possessed a strong sense of belonging. Upon examining differences of campus environment perceptions, the results showed that gender identity influenced campus environment perceptions and race influenced sense of belonging among students. There was insufficient evidence to establish differences of campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging among residential and commuter students. Limitations regarding this study included its generalizability due to the low number of survey responses and the physical aspect of campus environment and campus culture. Recommendations for policymakers and practitioners include consideration for community memberships, increase campus support for underrepresented groups, and cultural competency for training. Recommendations for future research include the use of different theoretical frameworks to understand student persistence, continued studies involving community colleges, inclusive campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging studies, and qualitative studies on campus environment perceptions and sense of belong of community college students.
