In a competitive environment and with constantly changing lifestyle and consumption habits, the hotel industry offer, and the services built around accommodation and catering as we know its today, do not guaranty the attractiveness, or the profitability, that is needed for this sector to remain sustainable. The modeling of a "new" hotel industry is necessary to meet customer expectations while taking into account the costs and operating constraints, particularly the "hotel industry service" playing a key role in the production and distribution processes of the service as well as in the quality perceived by the customer. The determinants of the hotel operational performance have evolved in different cycles turning the "modern" into "traditional".This thesis begins with the exploration of these developments in mid-ranged hotels in France through a field study conducted in twelve hotels and the headquarters of the AccorHotels group in France. This step, questioning the future of mid-ranged hotels in France, raised research questions wondering about the importance of the staff in the production of mid-ranged hotels products and services in our society, and more broadly, the importance of the human capital (in the microeconomic meaning) in the hotel industry. We decided to explore the links between staff and the hotel operational performance. This performance is composed of economic results, the quality perceived by the customers as well as parameters related to the context of the hotels. Based on an in-depth study of all the methodologies and measures of human capital, we chose to measure it through employee engagement at work, using a sample of 146 mid-range hotels (representing 3740 employees) of the AccorHotels group in France. We also measured, for each hotel, a set of context data (size, location, customer mix, level of digitization, renovations...), the operating result (Earnings Before Interest Taxes), the number of business per room available (RevPar) and a measure of the quality perceived by customers (Reputation Performance Score). This thesis shows the links between the operating result per room, the quality perceived by customers and the commitment of employees to work. We will develop their respective antecedents as well as the nature of their cross-statistical relationships. This thesis prooves that as a significant precedent of the quality perceived by the customers (itself an antecedent of the operating result), the commitment of the collaborators into their work is instrumental in order to obtain a better performance for the mid-ranged hotels in France. To go further, the identification of a typology of hotels based on these links makes us able to obtain simultaneously a global and a segmented view of the mid-range hotel business in France and the role by type of hotels of staff in order to reach a higher performance.

The influence of ambidextrous tensions in the organizational architecture for innovation: case studies in companies of transformation sector.Chang, Chuan Teh 05 May 2014 (has links)
In the pursuit of business viability, companies must consider and deal with current and future scenarios. For such, some companies seek acquiring skills in extracting results from their present resources for incremental innovations whilst simultaneously exploring new competences to develop more radical innovations that provide them future business prospects, and due to this dual characteristic such companies are classified as ambidextrous organizations. However, the challenge of simultaneously administering the two activities creates paradoxes - the ambidextrous tensions - that influence both the strategic choices of implementation and the changes in the organizational architecture for innovation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of these tensions in the organizational architecture and to identify which factors collaborate with those changes. The results indicate the external factors of competition and specificities of the market are decisive in the adoption of ambidextrous strategies; whereas amongst internal factors, the business model, the beliefs and the current innovative ability are drivers in the choice of the organizational architecture for innovation. Furthermore, the characteristics of the ambidextrous tensions, the intensity of this duality and its strategic orthogonality regarding the current innovative ability also interfere in the changes of the organizational architecture. This thesis also proposes a vectorial model to explain such analyzed phenomena and influences.

Society’s ability to adapt it self to the constant changes that comes through is linked to its ability to innovate. Innovate in products, services, means of production and socially. Based on the notion that innovation is essential for this process of adaptation, it is proposed that the strategic design occupies a prominent position in the construction of such initiatives. Among these initiatives can be mentioned social innovation laboratories, which are meant to be a space to reflect on the subject and, above all, where it is practiced. In these laboratories, integrating different actors of society - like people, organizations, universities and the government - it is necessary to develop relationships that allow working together. Relationships that go beyond the formal labor contracts. Relationships that can not always be described, but, however, influence how all these actors work together. To these relations we call relational contracts and organizations that are able to develop them eventually get generate competitive advantage through the strategic lever of organizational architecture. Thus, this research aims to discuss how the strategic design, through its ability to trigger dialogue between the actors of an ecosystem can contribute to the development of architecture as a strategic lever for social innovation laboratories from the study of case of Mercur innovation lab, located in Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul. As a result, shows the description of the laboratory and the interactions in it and through it occur. Analyzes the typology and it is proposed that they should not be classified, but to develop its own combination of features that may not necessarily fit in a standard operation. Finally present the capabilities of strategic design identified in this research as contributor to the development of organizational architecture as a strategic lever for social innovation laboratories. They are the ability to articulate different points of view, to map resources and actors needed for a project and make visual ideas and thoughts.
