Utilizando-se de uma pesquisa explicativa através do método Survey, análise documental e de campo foi possível concluir, que existe uma preocupação em tentar alinhar os cursos da UP/EGN com as diretrizes traçadas pela empresa no Plano de Negócios 2007-2013, entretanto não foi possível identificar uma estrutura devidamente montada com foco no aprendizado das Competências Organizacionais determinadas pela Petrobras. Foram apontadas sugestões de melhoria para que se consiga uma melhor eficiência na condução dos treinamentos com ênfase nessas competências. The object of this study was to evaluate, focusing on Petrobras University - School of Business and Management (EGN), the Strategic Alignment of courses with the Business Plan of Petrobras in the development of the Organizational Skills of employees. The study involved knowledge areas Strategic Alignment and Organizational Skills. Using explanatory research through the method Survey, field research and document analysis was possible to conclude that there is a concern about trying to align the courses of UP / EGN with the guidelines set by the company in the Business Plan 2007-2013, however it was not possible to identify a structure properly assembled with a focus on learning the Organizational Skills determined by Petrobras. Suggestions for improvement were identified so as to achieve better efficiency in the conduct of training with emphasis on these skills.

Success Off The Field: Academic Strategies of High-GPA College Athletes

This study investigated the strategies academically successful college student athletes use to do well in their class work, where academic success was defined as a 3.5 GPA for 12 or more credits for the two semesters preceding the study. Data were transcriptions of individual interviews with five male and five female athletes in seven sports at an NCAA Division I university in the western United States. Independent coders analyzed the data and agreed upon themes related to challenges to academic success and strategies to meet those challenges. Findings add to the literature by detailing self-regulatory habits that academically underprepared athletes can adopt from their successful peers. Academic advisors can use these findings as they help athletes increase academic success and learn valuable life skills.

Assessing treatment effects of a psychoeducational group on thoughts, feelings and actions of adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

The purpose of this action study was to assess effects of a psychoeducational group on thoughts, feelings and actions of adults with Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Specifically this study was designed to change organizational skills of ADHD adults using the TFA System and Group Pentagon. Three groups were evaluated during this study. Nine adults with ADHD in the treatment group participated in all of the pretesting, treatment and posttesting. Eight adults with ADHD served as a control group and participated in all of the pretesting and posttesting but received no treatment. Sixteen normal adults served as a second control group and were administered some evaluation instruments as a pretest in order to compare their scores to the two ADHD groups. Pre and posttest assessments consisted of: TFA self-assessments, a seven item checklist of organizational skills and a seven scale inventory of adult ADHD behaviors. A four session psychoeducational group was constructed using information from literature, assessments and Group Pentagon. Specific interventions were designed to improve individual behavior related to time management and task completion. Results showed that the TFA and Group Pentagon models had both statistical and practical effects in improving organizational skills of the treatment group. Participants were able to examine and change their thoughts, feelings and actions to improve time management and task completion skills. The ADHD control group showed no statistically significant changes. / Ph. D.

Desired Competencies of Employees on International Agricultural Development Projects as Indicated by Project Managers: A Qualitative Study

International agricultural development institutions previously hired employees based on their technical expertise, and, with little to no formal training in development, were sent to live abroad with one goal: implement the project. Since the development of the Millennium Development Goals in 2000, a spotlight has been placed on the development industry as a whole, and calls for world-wide accountability. The purpose of this study was to identify the desired competencies of project employees on international agricultural development projects as determined by experienced project managers. The population (N=8) for this study were all current or past project managers of international agricultural development projects. The participants engaged in an interview with the researcher, or chose to complete a questionnaire via email or standard mail. The same questions were presented in both situations. The researcher analyzed the data using the constant comparative qualitative method. The finding of this study identified competencies and categorized them into the following domains: cultural awareness, technical training, communication and interpersonal skills, attitudes and behaviors, experience, and organizational skills. The implications this study affect the curriculum development and content of higher education institutions, the hiring and evaluation process of international agricultural development institutions, and self-competency evaluation of potential employees of international agricultural development projects. It is the recommendation of the researcher that further studies be conducted to determine if the value of these competencies differ as per the location of the development project. It is also recommended that institutions of higher education, development institutions, and beneficiaries collaborate to provide opportunities for practical application of knowledge to future and current employees of international agricultural development.

The survey aims at exploring companies that are technology intensive operating through distribution channels and are also subsidiaries of foreign companies. A review of the literature regarding the model Resource-Based View of the Firm, as well as other several models, for identifying and analyzing competencies has shown that peculiarities of each industry directly influence the perception of managers as to how organizational competencies can impact their business. This has brought forth the need for the development of a model that integrates attributes and techniques advocated by the recent literature on strategic management, taking into consideration the idiosyncrasy of this technology industry segment. A case study of Apple Computer Brasil will be carried out during the survey to illustrate how this model can help both managers and executives explore organizational competencies for leveraging sustained competitive advantage.

A aprendizagem organizacional e a criação de conhecimento são determinantes para o sucesso da empresa nesse novo ambiente. O presente estudo define doze fatores-chave que podem estimular a aprendizagem e a criação de conhecimento dentro das empresas. Em seguida, verifica como esses fatores-chave são aplicados em quarenta empresas brasileiras de médio e grande porte. Finalmente, relaciona o grau em que esses fatores são aplicados e o desempenho de mercado das empresas. / [en] A very dinamyc and constantly changing environment forces companies to be faster and faster in responding efficiently to market demands. Corporate strategy nowadays is more worried about thecompany inside, to verify if it has conditions and necessary skills to move quickly and take advantage of market opportunities. Organizational learning and knowledgde creation are key elements to company sucess in this new environment. The present study defines twelve factors which favors organizational learning and knowmledge creation. After that, verifies how those key factors are applied in fifty medium and big sized Brasilian companies. Finally, it makes a correlation between the way those factors are applied and the companies market performance.

Neste contexto, a Gestão do Conhecimento tem recebido cada vez mais atenção das organizações. Elas têm buscado compreender seu significado e encontrar formas de gestão que lhes garanta, em última instância, impactos positivos no desempenho da empresa. A revisão da literatura evidencia a importância das relações entre Gestão do Conhecimento e a estratégia da empresa, a gestão de competências e a de resultado para o conseqüente desempenho superior do negócio. Sendo assim, o objetivo principal deste trabalho foi identificar se nas empresas brasileiras existe relação entre Gestão do Conhecimento e estratégia empresarial, gestão de competências e de resultado e o impacto causado por estas relações nos resultados de negócio. Deste modo, foi realizada uma pesquisa de campo junto a aproximadamente 100 empresas brasileiras que objetivou mensurar, em amostra representativa de múltiplas indústrias, as relações inerentes à Gestão do Conhecimento, verificando a existência dessas relações e avaliando o impacto no resultado destas empresas. Múltiplos métodos de análise foram utilizados para fornecer uma ampla base para interpretar e validar os dados. A partir dos resultados da análise estatística e dos construtos de natureza qualitativa, importantes generalizações foram sugeridas. A conclusão principal deste estudo indica que um percentual significativo de empresas brasileiras já estabelece relação entre Gestão do Conhecimento e a estratégia empresarial, a gestão de competências e de resultado e que essas organizações estão se destacando em termos de desempenho de negócio. / [en] In the competitive business environment, intangible assets represent a source of innovation and creation of new levels of value. In this context, Knowledge Management has received increasing attention from the organizations. They have tried to understand its meaning and to find management methods that ultimately ensure positive impacts on the company performance. Literature review demonstrates the importance of the relationship between Knowledge Management and firm strategy, competency and result management, for the consequent superior business performance. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to identify if Brazilian companies establish any relationship between Knowledge Management and firm strategy, competency and result management, and the impact produced by these relationships on business results. Therefore, a field survey was carried out about 100 Brazilian companies, with the intention of measuring, within a representative sample comprised of multiple industries, the relationships inherent to Knowledge Management, checking the existence of these relationships and assessing the impact on the results of these companies. Different analysis methods were employed to provide a broad basis to help understand and validate data. From the results of statistical analysis and qualitative constructs, important generalizations were suggested. The main conclusion of this study indicates that a significant percentage of Brazilian companies already establish a relationship between Knowledge Management and enterprise strategy, competency and result management, and that these organizations are excelling in terms of business performance.

Para atender a natureza da pesquisa, descreveu-se a trajetória histórica da Casa da Juventude Pe. Burnier, tendo como base os dados coletados por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, observação direta e não-participante e análise de documentos e registros. Neste sentido, a partir das principais fases de mudanças, desafios, estratégias, ações e processos chave foram identificadas as competências organizacionais desenvolvidas pela CAJU em sua trajetória, bem como a dependência que a organização têm desse percurso percorrido. O trabalho pretende contribuir para na ampliação do quadro de pesquisas sobre competências organizacionais no contexto da gestão social do Terceiro Setor. / This work was conceived to identify the organizational skills of an organization established in the context of social management of the Third Sector and focused in a preferential support for impoverished adolescents and youngsters in the city of Goiânia, Goiás State, Brazil. To reach the proposed objectives, we tried to discuss the research from the economic and social transformations that contemporary society is undergoing and also we took in consideration the emergence of Third Sector organizations. In this context, we realized the importance of these organizations for social and economic development of a place or region, and the role of the social management in the development process. Because this was a descriptive qualitative research, we tried to work respectively with categories and subcategories of analysis (Social Management in the Third Sector - strategies, actions and key processes and Organizational Skills - dependence on route and supportive elements). To reach the nature of research, we described the historical trajectory of the Ps. Burnier Youth House, it`s based on datas collected through semi-structured interviews, observation direct and non-participating and analysis of documents and records. In this sense, from the main stages of changes, challenges, strategies, actions and key processes there were identified the organizational competencies developed by CAJU in its path, as well as the dependence that this organization have of this walked route. This work aims to contribute expanding the framework for researches on organizational skills in the context of social management of the Third Sector.

[pt] O conhecimento organizacional, ou capital intelectual, é hoje reconhecido como o fator fundamental não só para o crescimento, como para a própria sobrevivência das organizações em ambientes dinâmicos, turbulentos, incertos, altamente inovadores e competitivos, como os do presente contexto de economias crescentemente globalizadas. A gestão do conhecimento organizacional (KM) apresenta-se, então, como uma das condições necessárias ao sucesso de estratégias competitivas, embora, por certo, não suficiente, sendo a demanda de conhecimento externo existente, por meio de negócios de fusão e aquisição (M&A), reconhecida como um dos processos essenciais da gestão, alternativamente a procedimentos inovadores em P&D, em geral lentos e onerosos. Todavia, pesquisas têm comprovado que, mundialmente, apenas cerca de 30% dos casos de M&A têm alcançado sucesso em seus objetivos estratégicos. Não obstante, esse tipo de negócio tem se afigurado como essencial à expansão de empresas de classe mundial, dada a insuficiência do mero crescimento orgânico, o que constitui um paradoxo. Este estudo de caso teve por objetivo descrever e explicar as causas do fenômeno do insucesso no desempenho da estratégia da empresa Xerox|MHW, combinada em processo de aquisição, tendo como componente essencial a gestão do conhecimento. A literatura examinada para a compreensão dos conceitos básicos pertinentes contemplou tópicos sobre padrões organizacionais; estratégias de organizações; conhecimento organizacional e sua gestão e resultados de processos de fusão e aquisição de empresas. A coleta de evidências, adotando procedimentos de triangulação, foi realizada a partir de documentos, entrevistas e duas pesquisas, visando, a segunda, validar os dados coletados anteriormente. Com base no modelo integrativo-sistêmico GI de MACEDO-SOARES (2000), a realidade revelada pela pesquisa mostrou-se contraditória relativamente aos requisitos, pressupostos e suposições implícitos na formulação estratégica, resultando, daí, a sua não-adequação ao desempenho da organização na busca de seu objetivo estratégico. A conclusão é que um processo de aquisição está longe de ser algo trivial, sendo os problemas de não- integração organizacional, principalmente cultural, em casos de aquisição por escopo, em particular envolvendo uma grande empresa burocrática e uma pequena empresa de padrão organizacional flexível, os grandes responsáveis por esse elevado percentual. Quanto ao conhecimento organizacional, evidenciou-se que não basta a uma organização entendê-lo como um recurso essencial no contexto de negócios atual. É imprescindível a implementação de procedimentos e práticas para a sua gestão, não obstante constituir processo recente e complexo que requer, até por isso mesmo, efetivo apoio da alta administração das organizações e o desenvolvimento de uma cultura adequada à sua efetivação. / [en] Organizational knowledge, or intellectual capital, is nowadays recognized as a key factor not only for growth, but for survival of organizations in dynamic, disturbed, uncertain and highly innovative and competitive environments, such as the ones in the current scenario of rising global economies. Organizational knowledge management (KM) is introduced, therefore, as one of the necessary conditions for competitive strategies success. However, of course, it is not enough, and the need for external knowledge, through merger and acquisition (M&A), is recognized as an essential management process, an alternative for innovative P&D procedure, normally slow and burdensome. Anyway, researches have assured that, worldwide, only 30% of M&A cases have reached success in their business goals. Nevertheless, this kind of business have been considered essential for the expansion of worldwide companies, since mere organic growth is insufficient, which is a paradox. This case study aims to describe and explain the causes for the failure phenomena in Xerox|MHW company strategy performance, combined when Xerox acquired MHW, with knowledge management as its key component. The literature consulted to comprehend these basic concerning concepts encompasses topics about organizational models, strategies, knowledge management and results of company merger and acquisition processes. The gathering of evidences, adopting triangulation procedures, has been performed using documents, interviews and two surveys. The second survey aimed to validate the data collected previously. Based on MACEDO-SOARES (2000) GI systemic-integrative model, the reality revealed by the research is contradictory in relation to the requirements, presuppositions and suppositions implicit in the strategy conception, resulting, from this, its nonadjustment to the organization performance, trying to pursuit its strategic objective. The conclusion is that an acquisition process is far from being something trivial, and the problems of organizational non- adjustment - mainly cultural, in cases of scope acquisition, particularly involving a major bureaucratic company and a minor one with flexible organization model - are the responsible factors for this high percentage. About organizational knowledge, it is clear that understanding it as an essential resource in the current business scenario is not enough. It is crucial the implementation of practices and procedures to its management. However, building this new and complex process requires, because of it, solid support from high level management in the companies and the development of a proper culture, fitting its accomplishment.

Living SMART : an Internet course for adults with ADHD

ADHD affects executive functions and pharmacological treatment is the most common intervention. Medication is ineffective for some and psychosocial interventions are scarcely available. CBT that teaches organizational skills for managing ADHD-symptoms has shown promising results. Smartphones can help individuals perform executive tasks such as planning and organizationand they could beefficacious as a support tool for ADHD patients. The current study is aRCT that compares an online course (n=29) based on previouslyeffective CBT treatments for ADHD to a wait-list control (n=29). Theintervention focused on teaching the use of an online calendar and smartphone apps. The intervention brought significant improvement (p < 0.001) to participants regarding ADHD symptoms and 38% of participants were considered clinically significantly improved. This indicates that online treatments using IT-tools for ADHD is effective and that smartphones can be used as a tool for aiding individuals with impairments in executive functions.
