Practised Ways of Being: Theorising Lesbians, Agency and Health

Dyson, Sue, S.Dyson@latrobe.edu.au January 2007 (has links)
The contemporary field lesbian health was shaped by a range of social and political changes in the last third of the twentieth century, as well as by discourses originating in the historical regulation of lesbianism. In discourse, lesbians have been produced as invisible, passive victims of heterosexist and potentially homophobic health-care providers. This project sought to understand how lesbians produce and manage their own health, and their interactions with doctors and other health-care providers. The research questions asked how discourses about lesbianism and the construction of the lesbian health field influence the ways in which lesbians construct and manage their own health, and how lesbians position themselves as they negotiate clinical spaces. Using semi-structured interviews, 19 women, aged between 22 and 64 years, who identified as lesbian, gay, same-sex-attracted and queer were interviewed. Interview data were analysed using discourse and content analysis. When they engaged with the health-care system, some participants produced their lesbianism as a social matter of no relevance to health; while for others their lesbianism was central to their health. An analysis of power relations revealed the complexity of ways the participants used agency to speak or remain silent about their sexual orientation. This was motivated by complex embodied understandings about the potential for emotional, physical or ontological harm involved in coming out in clinical spaces. Some chose to remain silent all, or some of the time, others to assertively identify themselves as lesbian. This depended on a range of contemporaneous factors including safety concerns, past experience and personal judgement. Whether to come out or not in the medical encounter was not necessarily a conscious decision, but was shaped by the individuals embodied sense for the game. While the health-care system had frequently provided less than optimum care, these women were not passive, but used agency to decide whether or not their sexual orientation was relevant to the medical encounter.

Vad är Protean career orientation och kan detta predicera kompetensutveckling?

Landström, Nanna January 2008 (has links)

He[d]uristics - Heuristics for designing object oriented examples for novices

Nordström, Marie January 2009 (has links)
<p><p>The use of examples is known to be important in learning, they should be “exemplary” and function as role-models.</p><p>Teaching and learning problem solving and programming in the object oriented paradigm is recognised as difficult. Object orientation is designed to handle complexity and large systems, and not with education in focus. The fact that object orientation often is used as first paradigm makes the design of examples even more difficult and important.</p><p>In this thesis, a survey of the literature is made to establish a set of characteristics for object orientation in general. This set of characteristics is then applied to the educational setting of introducing novices to object oriented problem solving and programming, resulting in a number of heuristics for educational purposes, called He[d]uristics. The proposed He[d]uristics are targeted towards educators designing small-scale examples for novices, and is an attempt to provide help in designing suitable examples, not a catalogue of good ones.</p><p>The He[d]uristics are discussed and exemplified and also evaluated versus the derived set of characteristics and known common problems experienced by novices.</p></p>

Orientation of MgO thin films on Si(001) prepared by pulsed laser deposition

Zhu, Tie-Jun, Lu, Li 01 1900 (has links)
Pulsed laser deposition method was employed to grow MgO thin films with preferred orientation on bare Si(100) and SiO₂/Si(100) substrates. The orientation of MgO thin films was systematically investigated by varying deposition parameters. XRD analysis showed that the preferred orientation of MgO thin films would change from (111) to (100) when laser fluence decreased and oxygen pressure increased to certain extend. But it was difficult to fabricate completely (100)-oriented MgO films. Substrate temperature seemed to have little influence on the orientation of MgO thin films at high laser fluence. SEM images of the MgO thin films on Si(100) deposited at 400°C and the laser fluence of 5J/cm² in the oxygen ambient of 200mTorr demonstrated that there was no presence of interfacial reactions or cracks and the film surface was very smooth. Such film is suitable as buffer layers for the growth of high-quality ferroelectric and superconducting overlayers. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

The normal basilar artery: structural properties and mechanical behavior

Wicker, Bethany Kay 15 May 2009 (has links)
The leading cause of death in patients who survive subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is stroke as a result of cerebral arterial vasospasm1. Such vasospasms involve a vasoactive response, but they remain enigmatic and no clinical treatment has proven effective in prevention or reduction2. Arteries remodel in response to diverse mechanical loads and chemical factors. Following SAH, the surrounding vasculature is exposed to a radically altered chemo-mechanical environment. It is our hypothesis that chemical stimuli associated with the formation of an extravascular blood clot dominates the maladaptive growth and remodeling response early on, thus leading to important structural changes. However, it is not clear which of the many chemical factors are key players in the production of vasospasm. Before an accurate picture of the etiology of vasospasm can be produced, it is imperative to gain a better understanding of the non-pathogenic cerebral vasculature. In particular, the rabbit basilar artery is a well established model for vasospasm. However, surprisingly little is known about the mechanical properties of the rabbit basilar artery. Using an in vitro custom organ culture and mechanical testing device, acute and cultured basilar arteries from male White New Zealand specific pathogen free rabbits underwent cyclic pressurization tests at in vivo conditions and controlled levels of myogenic tone. Sections of basilar arteries were imaged for collagen fiber orientation at 0, 40 and 80 mmHg at in vivo stretch conditions using nonlinear optical microscopy. The nonlinear stress-strain curves provide baseline characteristics for acute and short-term culture basilar arteries. The active and passive testing creates a framework for interpreting the basal tone of arteries in our culture system. Nonlinear optical microscopy second harmonic generation provides unique microstructural information and allows imaging of live, intact arteries while maintaining in vivo geometries and conditions. Collagen fibers were found to be widely distributed about the axial direction in the adventitial layer and narrowly distributed about the circumferential direction in the adventitial layer. The quantified collagen fiber angles within the artery wall further support the development of accurate mathematical models.

Investigating the relationship between Entrepreneurial and Market Orientations within French SMEs and linking it to Performance

Couppey, Matthieu, Roux, Ysaline January 2007 (has links)
This study empirically investigates the levels of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and market orientation (MO), and their links to performance within the context of French Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). SMEs represent today the heart of the European strategy and account fro 99% of the total companies in France. The current study argues that SMEs and especially French ones deserve a particular attention. Besides, even though many studies have been conducted in the fields of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation, when combining both, only a few included performance in their empirical analyses. Moreover, most relied on large established companies or MNE. Little concern has been put in SME and none have been done on the case of French SMEs. The current study propose a cross-sectional analysis to investigate the combination of EO and MO and its impact on performance through a quantitative research method. Based on existing theories and previous studies, three hypotheses have been formulated : H1 : Companies that are entrepreneurial oriented outperform companies that are not. H2 : Companies that are market oriented outperform companies that are not. H3 : Companies that are both entrepreneurial and market oriented outperform companies that are either one or none. In order to test those hypotheses, a online 24 questions survey has been administrated to a sample of 338 French SMEs. All questions were based on the works of Covin and Slevin (1989), Narver and Slater (1990), Lumpkin and Dess (1996), and Blois and Carson (2000). The results show that all hypothesis are verified. However, if no correlation was found between EO and MO, the combination of both enables SMEs to achieve higher performance.
