Are ORMs the end of stored procedures?

Houssein, Hatem January 2017 (has links)
Stored procedures are used as the current database logic for SAAB’s data model of the fighter aircraft JAS-39 Gripen electrical schemas. Since the database model was developed in 2000, a research and tests needed to be carried out to decide on whether updating the database to today's technology is applicable. Therefore, Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) is to be researched, tested and compared to stored procedures using test-driven development (TDD)concerning an important factor, that Stored procedures are well-known for, which is querying performance of the database. Moreover, how maintainability and flexibility [1] can affect decision between Stored procedures or migrating to ORM based on our subjective experience. NHibernate and Entity Framework are the two ORM solutions considered sinceSAAB uses C# in this project. The process of this project is run using scrum of the agile software development to maintain an iterative progress throughout the project timeline. In this paper, the process and methodology are covered in details and also the comparison with the test results. These results eventually lead us to the answer that ORM is not a suitable technology, and stored procedures still dominate the querying performance for SAAB’scurrent database.

Comparison of Java Persistence Layer Technologies

Sun, Ang January 2016 (has links)
As data and data structures grown more complex in computing, the task of storing and accessing such data efficiently also becomes more complex. Object-oriented programming languages such as Java have popularized the practice of using class-based objects and created the challenge of persisting these complex objects to storage systems such as databases which only store simple scalar values. This paper seeks to explore and compare a selected num-ber of popular persistence solutions for the Java language in their use and per-formance. This is done through researching, implementing and performance testing the chosen candidates. Through these steps we have found that while more abstracted solutions provided easier implementation and usage, these positives come with the disadvantages of generally slower performance. We also discovered that while many persistence frameworks provide features that minimize the amount of code required for implementation, they suffer from performance issues such as the N+1 query issue if not configured or utilized correctly.

Comparison of performance between Raw SQL and Eloquent ORM in Laravel

Jound, Ishaq, Halimi, Hamed January 2016 (has links)
Context. PHP framework Laravel offers three techniques to interact with databases, Eloquent ORM, Query builder and Raw SQL. It is important to select the right database technique when developing a web application because there are pros and cons with each approach.  Objectives. In this thesis we will measure the performance of Raw SQL and Eloquent ORM, there is little research on which technique is faster. Intuitively, Raw SQL should be faster than Eloquent ORM, but exactly how much faster needs to be researched.   Methods. To measure the performance of both techniques, we developed a blog application and we ran database operations select, insert and update in both techniques.   Conclusions. Results indicated that overall Raw SQL performed better than Eloquent ORM in our database operations. There was a noticeable difference of average response time between Raw SQL and Eloquent ORM in all database operations. We can conclude that Eloquent ORM is good for building small to medium sized applications, where simple CRUD operations are used for the small amount of data. Typically for tasks like inserting a single row into a database or retrieving few rows from the database. Raw SQL is preferable for the applications that are dealing with huge amount of data, bulk data loads and complex queries.

The Role of Online Reputation Management in Strategic Business Decisions in Ericsson

Tafesse, Yodit Zenebe January 2012 (has links)
With this immensely and immeasurably growing Internet technology, the need for onlinereputation management (ORM) is also growing accordingly. It is increasingly seen as animportant means by firms to create stronger alliance between customers and the firm (Bealand Strauss, 2008). ORM is relatively new which theoretically and empirically very youngphenomenon in which very few researches have been made around the area ever since.Hence, the intention of this research is to fill the knowledge gaps recognized and useEricsson Company to conduct an exploratory qualitative research to give empirical value tothe study. The purpose of this study is to explore how ORM can play role in making strategic businessdecisions through branding and construct a model that shows relationship among ORM,branding and strategic business decision. The relevant research concepts that are discussedin the literature review are linked through logical links depicted in the model. After the model is constructed Ericsson Company was taken as a case and qualitative study was made using an in-depth interview with the company’s expert in this area in Ericssonglobal to see how the concept of ORM, branding and strategic decisions in the model areinterlinked to each other. This research has answers on how this company perform its ORM,how ORM can influence branding, how branding can influence strategic business decisionand in the end how ORM can influence strategic business decision. From the finding of this research, ORM has influence on branding and brand has influenceon strategic business decision. Finally, it can also be concluded that ORM has impact on strategic business decisions through branding.

Performance Analysis of Relational Databases, Object-Oriented Databases and ORM Frameworks / Prestandaanalys av Relationsdatabaser, Objektorienterade Databaser och ORM-Ramverk

Nagy, Victor January 2014 (has links)
In the planning stage of web and software development, it is important to select the right tool for the job. When selecting the database to use, relational databases like MySQL is a popular choice. However, relational databases suffer by object-relational impedance mismatch. In this work we will explore the response time of relational and object-oriented databases and the overhead of ORM frameworks. This will be done by creating a web application that receives data about flights and airports from a client, which measures the response time of the databases and the entire request. It was found that MySQL has the lowest response time, while the ORM framework Hibernate adds an overhead on some of the tests while performing similar to MySQL. Db4o had the highest response time in a majority of the tests. In future works, this study could be extended by other tests or by other type of databases.

Robust Issue Tracking Application (RITA) : Developing an issue tracker using modern web technologies

Åhman, Stefan January 2017 (has links)
Issue tracking is one of the vital parts in maintaining computer  systems.  It is utilized in anything from small independent companies to large enterprises. The tracking does not just provide developers and other personnel with crucial information regarding their systems current state, but additionally stores useful documentation if any error reoccurs in the future. However, if the tracking issue would be deficient in some way, the complete process of developing or maintaining a system could affected negatively in great extent. This thesis work has looked into a scenario where the tool has been to slow, overly complicated and obsolete. It has made a large negative impact on the work force that uses the tool and made tracking issue to a discouragement. The thesis work has thence investigated features of the existing tool, suggested a better solution to use based upon these findings, followed by the development of a web application. When the application was finished, its usability was tested by the intended staff and performance tests were conducted. The test results showed that the application had been implemented successfully in many aspects. Unfortunately, due to deficient technical choices, the project did struggle with implementing all features as expected. The thesis work did consequently learn the hard way the importance of a choosing development techniques very thoroughly.

Lilith som antagonistisk kraft : En studie i judisk mytologi

Lindstedt Grahn, Hedda January 2020 (has links)
This study reviews Lilith in Jewish mythology, specifically how she relates to the other main operators in the myths, which are God, Samael, Adam and Eve. Her connections with the animal who often symbolizes her, the serpent, has also been reviewed. Furthermore, the study examines what her relationship with the other operators says about her function in the myths. Using a hermeneutical method, the study examines extracts from rabbinic literature, the Alphabet of Ben Sira and Kabbalistic writings. The results show that Lilith’s symbolism and characteristics have drawn inspiration from Eve in the earlier writings, and that both women are portrayed in close relation with the serpent. In the Kabbalist tradition Lilith is a driving force in a narrative that strives for messianic victory, and together with her partner Samael she rules over evil. One of Lilith’s main functions is that of an antagonist, and an antipole, to the divinity and the primal couple, and essentially to goodness.

Generátor vědeckých webových portálů / Scientific Web Portal Generator

Bajzecer, Tomáš January 2011 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis is to create a generator of scientific web portals which makes the creation of portals much easier. The administrators of the portals will be able to show different information to specific user groups. The generator is based on modular structure that uses Nette framework (PHP), Doctrine ORM and jQuery framework (Javascript, Ajax). The portal presents the results depending on settings of each portal and its basic data is saved in local database. The local database is a stand-alone project (ReReSearch). The portal works in different modes which are classified into three categories: automatic, semi-automatic and manual mode. The priority mode is the semi-automatic. The generator works also as a feedback for the local database, which provides relevant information from specified fields of science.
