A Novel Approach to Grass-Legume Management

Solomon, Juan Kevin Quamina 01 May 2010 (has links)
A 2-yr grazing study quantified pasture and animal responses of four forage systems (FS) grazed at two stocking rates (SR; 3 or 6 animals ha-1). Using „Marshall? annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and „Durana? white clover (Trifolium repens L.), FS treatments included spatially separated grass and legumes within the same paddock (SS), monoculture grass (MG), monoculture legume (ML), and a binary grass and legume mixture (MIX). Annual herbage mass (HM) was similar among FS at high SR (1900 kg ha-1), but at low SR, grass plots had greater HM (2900 vs. 2000 kg ha-1) than plots of legume monocultures. Animals on SS (1.12 kg) had greater average daily gain (ADG) than ML (0.97 kg), but neither was different from MG (1.08 kg) or MIX (1.00 kg). Low SR animals had greater ADG than high SR (1.09 vs. 0.99 kg). These results indicate that SS grazing system can improve pasture productivity.

Nitrogen utilization in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) pastures fertilized with nitrogen or grown with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) or red clover (Trifolium pratense L.)

Absher, Karen Lynne 01 August 2012 (has links)
Use of legumes as an alternative to nitrogen (N) fertilization in pasture management improves forage quality and animal performance and has been suggested to reduce the potential for environmental pollution. "Kentucky 3l" tall fescue fertilized with 160 kg N ha-1 yr-1 (split application) was compared to tall fescue grown with alfalfa or red clover in a 5-yr pasture experiment on a mixed Typic Hapludult. During yr 6, effects of N fertilization or the legume on soil N, forage N concentration, yield, botanical composition, N intake by esophageally fistulated steers grazing the pastures and N utilization by wethers fed the harvested forages were investigated. Soil ammonium was higher (P ≤ .01) in the A and B horizons in the tall fescue-red clover pastures compared to the other treatments and nitrate was lower (P ≤ .05) in the A horizon, but concentrations differed (P ≤ .01) by date. Nitrate in the A horizon averaged 2.65, 1.38 and 2.21 ppm for tall fescue-N, tall fescue-red clover and tall fescue-alfalfa, respectively. In the B horizon, average soil NO3 was .43, .23 and .53 ppm for tall fescueâ N, tall fescue-red clover and tall fescue-alfalfa, respectively. Tall fescue-alfalfa pastures were higher (P ≤ .01) in percentage legume than tall fescue-red clover, overall, but differed by date (P ≤ .01). Alfalfa was generally higher (P ≤ .05) in N concentration than red clover. Total kg N accumulated ha⁻¹ in above-ground herbage was higher (P≤ .05) for the grass-legume mixtures than N-fertilized tall fescue. Esophageally fistulated steers grazing stockpiled tall fescue-alfalfa selected forage higher (P ≤ .05) in N concentration than steers grazing the other pastures. Stockpiled tall fescue-alfalfa fed to wethers in a metabolism trial was higher (P ≤ .01) in N concentration, dry matter digestibility (DMD), apparent N absorption, and N retention than the other treatments. All treatments differed, with wethers fed tall fescue-red clover having the lowest DMD, apparent N absorption and N retention. Wethers fed tall fescue-alfalfa and tall fescue-red clover had higher blood urea N then those fed tall fescue-N. Results of this research demonstrate that soil NO₃ concentrations were low for all three forage treatments and would not contribute to ground water contamination. Legumes supplied adequate N to achieve yields similar to tall fescue fertilized with N and increased N production ha⁻¹ in the above ground biomass. Digestibility and utilization of the N in stockpiled tall fescue were improved by inclusion of alfalfa but not red clover. / Master of Science

Alternative grazing systems and pasture types for the South West of Western Australia : a bio-economic analysis

Sounness, Marcus Neil January 2005 (has links)
Alternative grazing systems and pasture types for wool production in the south west of Western Australia were analysed using bio-economic modelling techniques in order to determine their relative productivity and profitability. After reviewing the experimental and modelling literature on perennial pastures and grazing systems, seven case studies of farmers were conducted in order to investigate the practical application of innovative grazing systems and use of perennial pastures. Together these case studies provided information for identifying relevant variables and for calibrating the modelling work which followed. The core of the work lies in a bio-economic model for investigating the comparative value of the three grazing systems and two pasture families mentioned above. A baseline scenario using currently available and reliable scientific data provides baseline results, after which a number of sensitivity analyses provide further insights using variations of four key parameters: persistence, heterogeneity, water soluble carbohydrates, and increased losses. Results show that perennial pastures are in the studied region more profitable than annual pastures. Under current baseline conditions, continuous grazing with perennial pastures is the most profitable enterprise, but this superiority is not robust under parameter variations defined by other scenarios. The more robust solution in terms of enterprise profitability is cell grazing with perennial pastures. The results indicate that intensive grazing systems such as cell grazing have the potential to substantially increase the profitability of grazing operations on perennial pasture. This result is an encouraging one in light of its implications for water uptake and salinity control. It means that economics and land care can go hand in hand, rather than be competitive. It is to be noted that it is the choice of the grazing system in combination with the pasture species, rather then the pasture species itself, that allows for such complementarity between economics and sustainable land use. This research shows that if farmers adopt practices such as cell grazing they may be able to increase the area that they can profitably plant to perennial pasture thus reducing the impacts of dryland salinity. This finding is consistent with the findings of the case studies where the farmers perceived that, provided grazing was planned, increasing the intensity of their grazing management and the perenniallity of their pastures would result in an increase in the profitability of their grazing operation. As a result this research helps to bridge a gap which has existed in this area of research, between the results of scientific research and those reported in practice.

The study area, located in the State of Goiás, Central Brazil, comprises an area of approximately 77.806 km², between latitudes 14º 00 S and 16º 30 S, and longitudes 48º 30 and 51º 10 W. Based on our data and results, we found a substantial difference between the two periods investigated, particularly concerning the green biomass and % green cover. While the total biomass remains mostly unchanged, the green biomass varies from 1.2 to 3.1 t/ha between August and February. Likewise, the % green cover increases as much as 65%. All these data and results, situated within the context of a larger initiative, certainly may be instrumental in promoting a more effective and sustainable pasture management in the Cerrado biome.

Patterns of resource use by livestock during and after drought in a communal rangeland in Namaqualand.

Samuels, Mogamat Igshaan. January 2006 (has links)

Pastoralists in Africa have developed complex mechanisms by which they can alleviate the threat of drought. They practice mobility as one of the strategies to avoid the worst effects of natural stress and disperse grazing pressure. In the past in South Africa, the indigenous Nama people occupied large areas of land and moved around extensively to exploit seasonal differences in the availability of forage and water. With the settlement of the Europeans in the Cape the indigenous people lost most of their land to the colonists. The Nama people were, therefore, restricted to smaller rangelands and their patterns of rangeland use had to adapt to the spatial constraints. Descendants now herd livestock from semi-permanent stockposts that are scattered throughout the commons. Herders use a range of practices to manage their livestock. The aims of this study was to assess the agro-ecological knowledge of livestock keepers / assess the condition of the rangeland during drought / determine the herding strategies of herders during drought.

Andrade, Ernani Nery de. 1976- January 2010 (has links)
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the supplementation with protected lipid during rearing in pastures and during termination in confinement on the productive performance of young Angus x Nellore bulls. 108 young bulls with age of 14 months and initial average weight of 260 Kg were used during 6 months in rotational pasture, randomly arranged into three treatments: mineral supplementation, protein-energy supplementation with 0.3% of live weight without protected lipid and protein-energy supplementation with 0.3% of live weight with protected lipid. After 6 months in pasture, animals with average of 20 months old and 480 Kg were introduced to confinement and distributed in 12 pens, being that animals from 6 pens received diet containing protected lipid and the animals from the remaining 6 pens received diet without protected lipid and were slaughtered as they reached 545 Kg of live weight. The experimental design was totally randomized in 3x2 factorial scheme, three different supplementation strategies in pastures and two diets in confinement, with 18 repetitions/treatment. There was not interaction between the inclusion or not of protected lipid in the diet in pastures and in confinement for consumption, performance and carcass characteristics variables. Under the conditions of the present study, losses by cooling decrease with protein-energy supplementation in rearing in pasture because it provides finishing more uniform on the carcasses, more evident in animals that did not receive protected fat / Orientador: Roberto Oliveira Roça / Coorientador: Marcelo Henrique de Faria / Banca: Heraldo Cesar Gonçalves / Banca: Paulo Roberto Leme / Banca:Guilherme Fernando Alleoni / Banca: Flavio Dutra de Resende / Doutor

Marandu / Characterization and quantification of damage caused by adult spittlebugs of the genus Mahanarva sp. (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) in Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu.

Congio, Guilhermo Francklin de Souza 08 October 2010 (has links)
Among the pests found in pastures spittlebugs have a prominent place due to large economic losses. However, the lack of studies to quantify forage plants responses to insect attack difficult to understand the magnitude of the damage, preventing the definition of control strategies. The objective of this experiment was to characterize and quantify responses of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu under infestation levels of adult spittlebugs of the genus Mahanarva sp. (Hemiptera: Cercopidae). The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, at Piracicaba SP and their treatments corresponded to four spittlebugs infestation levels (5, 10, 20 and 40 adults pot-1) plus the control (no spittlebugs), distributed in the experimental units (pots) according to a completely randomized design. The study included period of infestation by insects and regrowth of plants and evaluated the following response variables: forage accumulation and morphological composition, bromatological parameters (phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF)), root mass, organic reserves content in reserve organs, morphogenetic and structural characteristics. Increased infestation levels provided reduction in forage accumulation with results adjusted to the quadratic regression model. The proportion of leaves, stems and dead material were also affected by the insects. In general, the concentration of bromatological parameters was elevated with increasing infestation levels, CP and S responded linearly, and P and Ca were adjusted to a quadratic regression model. The number of live tillers increased with increasing infestation levels in quadratic manner. The residue and roots mass, as well as the nonstructural carbohydrates concentration in accumulation organs, was influenced only during the regrowth period. The total nitrogen concentration was influenced by the interaction between infestation levels and regrowth period both in the residue fraction as in roots. Among morphogenetic characteristics, the elongation and leaf senescence rates were affected with results adjusted to linear and quadratic regression model, respectively. Among the structural, the final leaf length and stem length responded linearly and quadratically respectively.

Study of the animal performance and herbage production of irrigated tanzania grass (Panicum maximum, Jacq.) in a rotational grazing system under three post-grazing residues levels.

Penati, Marco Antonio 02 April 2002 (has links)
This research was to evaluate effect of the post-grazing pasture mass on morphological characteristics, herbage production and animal performance and productivity from irrigated and rotationally grazed system with Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzânia. The experimental period was October 30/1999 to January 03/2001 and established at Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", Piracicaba/SP. A complete randomized block design with three postgrazing residues (1.000, 2.500 e 4.000 kg/ha of green dry matter - GDM) and four replicates was used. The grass seeding was performed on March 17/1999 and soil was limed and fertilized to 80% base saturation, phosphorus (resin) level of 30 mg/cm3 and 5% potassium in the cation exchange capacity. In each grazing cycle paddocks were fertilized with 24-04-24 (334 kg/ha). Nellore steers with approximately 10 months of age were used. Four pre-experiments were conducted, the first three to determine the best dimesion:format ratio of the sampling unit and the most appropriate number of samplings in evaluating herbage mass. The fourth pre-experiment aimed to evaluate the relationship between grazing depth (progressive sward defoliation during the grazing period) and plant height before grazing. Herbage mass evaluation in tussock-forming pastures should be performed taking four 1 m2 samples (1m x 1m). Grazing depth was linearly correlated to plant height, irrespective of grazing intensity and days on the grazing period. Grazing intensity had no effect on the slope of the angle between soil and tillers on the border of the tussock, neither on tussock shape nor on forage bulk density across the sward profile, indicating Tanzania grass has limited plasticity for these characteristics. However, stem, leaf and dead material proportion in herbage samples, as well as leaf/stem ratio and plant height were affected by treatments (post-grazing residues) and season of the year. The ground area covered by grass tussocks decreased during the experimental period, irrespective of the treatment. The tussock size was associated with fast adaptation mechanisms of the plants in response to changes in environment resulting from different post-grazing herbage masses. Animal performance was better related to herbage allowance and post-grazing residues than with leaf/stem ratio or forage bulk density. Treatments did not altered animal productivity. In spite of this, it would be more adequate to allow post-grazing pasture mass to be higher than 2.915 kg GDM/ha and herbage allowance to be higher than 14,9 kg GDM/100 kg live weight (LW) or 6,1 kg of leaves/100 kg LW. This grazing management would improve animal performance and anticipate slaughter age in 150 days when compared to the treatment with post-grazing pasture mass of 1.266 kg GDM/ha.
