O exemplo da contaminação da Bacia do Rio Ribeira de Iguape por chumbo e metais associados" / "The utilization of peat as heavy metal adsorbent. The example of the contamination of Ribeira do Iguape River catchment by lead and associated minerals"Franchi, José Guilherme 19 November 2004 (has links)
This work has as main objectives the characterization of the Eugênio de Melo peat mine, located in the Paraíba do Sul River Valley, State of São Paulo, as well as a representative sample of its ore. This sample was tested as an absorbent material in two conditions both in natura and treated with hydrochloric acid in order to assess its use in liquid effluent treatment process. It were adopted as case studies lab generated leaches obtained from mining residues of lead and associated metals sulfides present at the upper course of the Ribeira do Iguape River region, accumulated as huge deposits close to important drainages, near the Adrianópolis (PR) region. The possibility of the heavy metals environmental release from those deposits was assessed through grain size distribution, mineralogical and chemical approaches. These studies were led in a vertical profile surveyed in a specified deposit. The leaches heavy metal contents surpass the limits set by both state and federal environmental permits, so they are not allowed for discharge to the environment without prior treatment. The mining residues studied here mining wastes and metallurgical slags were characterized as Type I (perilous material) according to Brazilian Guidelines for Residues Classification set by Brazilian Association for Technical Standards. The peats adsorptive capacity was assessed for 5 of the heavy metals present in the leaches by means of batch equilibrium essays conducted in single component systems. The data of these experiments fitted to Langmuirs kinetic model. The chemical affinity of the peat was stronger for lead, copper and cadmium, and weaker for zinc and manganese. Calcium and magnesium derived from metadolomites that hosts sulfide mineralization are in great amount in the leaches. They were identified as interferential constituents to the adsorptive process, which are also affected by the pH and temperature of the assays. The leaches were undergone to 5 cycles of contact with peat in order to assess if the adsorptive process fit them to the legal discharge environmental standards. In this simulation of batch effluent treatment by means of competitive adsorption, the peat revealed itself as a good adsorbent for both lead and copper. The weak adsorptive performance for cadmium, zinc and manganese ranked peat only as a qualified supplies to remediation process entailing liquid effluents, preferably after primary treatment process.

Two pot trials were carried out using a heavy metal accidentally contaminated soil. In the first one it was evaluated the plant absorbing, translocating and accumulating power for zinc, copper, manganese, lead and boron by the following vegetal species: Brassica juncea, Raphunus sativus L., Hybiscus cannabinus and Amaranthus crentus, so they could help in the rehabilitation of the studied soil. In the second pot trial it was evaluated the application of the following organic materials: Solomax, peat, and humic mineral concentrate for heavy metal toxicity amelioration for Brassica juncea. In a laboratory experiment it was evaluated the zinc retention capacity for the above mentioned organic materials. The measured variables were plant dry matter yield, absorbed and accumulated amounts of Zn, Cu, Mn, Pb and B; the translocation index and the removal index of metal by the mentioned plant species. The total and available (DTPA and CaCl2 001 mol L-1) content of Zn, Cu, Mn and Pb, were determined in soil samples. Concerning the soil saturation extract, the soluble and free forms of the mentioned elements were determined by ICPOES and capillary electrophoresis respectively. The same metals were also determined in the plant tissue of Brassica juncea. Analytical results were introduced in the chemical equilibrium program MINTEQ in order to calculate the concentration of the free forms of Zn, Cu, Mn, and Pb. A fractioning scheme for metals in soil was carried out in order to evaluate the effect of adding sources of organic carbon. The Freundlich model was used to account for zinc adsorption by the studied organic materials and the distribution coefficient Kd was also calculated. Although the plant species were able to accumulate high amounts of metal in the aerial part, that could not be considered as a hipper-accumulation process. The highest metal removal indexes were observed for Brassica juncea and Amaranthus crentus. Organic materials showed high values of Kd, reflecting its high affinity for zinc and a great capacity of zinc immobilization as well. Freundlich model was very effective in describing the adsorption isotherms as indicated by the high determination coefficients. Zinc retention was affected by the organic material type and pH, being favored by the highest studied pH values. Peat and humic mineral concentrate reduced the amounts of metals extracted by DTPA and CaCl2 in soil but the reduction was not great enough to avoid toxic effects in plants. Zn and Mn were present mostly as free cations in soil saturation extract while Pb and Cu were complexed by dissolved organic matter. It was not detected any significant correlation between free metal contents directly determined by capillary electrophoresis and those estimated by MINTEQ. Metal sequential extraction showed that most of them occurred in the least available fractions of soil. Peat and humic mineral concentrate application to soil associated with Amaranthus crentus and Brassica juncea cultivation may be used in long term amelioration of soils contaminated with Zn, Mn, Pb and B.

Carbon and water dynamics of peat soils in the Australian AlpsGrover, Samantha Patricia Power, samgrover1@gmail.com January 2006 (has links)
This research investigated carbon dynamics, water dynamics and peat formation at
Wellington Plain peatland in the Victorian Alps. The properties of bog peat and dried
peat were measured, and the ensuing results are outlined below.
The carbon chemistries of both bog peat and dried peat displayed changes with
depth consistent with an increase in the extent of decomposition of the organic
material. Representative changes in the alkyl:O-alkyl ratio down the profile were
0.14 to 0.96 for bog peat and 0.28 to 1.07 for dried peat. Laboratory incubations on
the influence of chemistry, particle size, water content and sample preparation
indicated that, in the absence of confounding factors, peat chemistry was the most
important factor in determining the size of the mineralisable carbon pool. Water
content was the most important factor in determining the rate of carbon
mineralization. In the field, both bog peat and dried peat emitted an average of
2 g CO2/m2/d from the surface. Carbon mineralisation was related to both soil
temperature and soil water content, and this relationship was used to model peat
mineralisation under a range of possible future climate scenarios. Below the surface,
however, I measured lower rates of decomposition in the dried peat than in the bog
peat.
The water-holding capacity of peat was measured in the laboratory, as was the
rate of water movement through peat. Specific yield decreased down the profile in
both bog peat (0.88 to 0.45 cm3/cm3) and dried peat (0.36 to 0.11 cm3/cm3). Hydraulic
conductivity also decreased down the profile in both peats: 5.1x10-4 to 3.0x10-6 m/s in
bog peat, and 1.0x10-4 to 7.0x10-6 m/s in dried peat. Relationships between the
hydrologic properties of peat and its physical and chemical properties were identified.
In the field, fluctuations in the watertable were monitored in concert with rainfall.
These laboratory and field measurements enabled me to develop models of the
hydrology of bog peat and dried peat.
Radioisotope dating indicated that both bog peat and dried peat began forming
around 3300 years ago. The bog peat appeared to have drained to form dried peat
between 131 and 139 years ago. Since that time, erosion appeared to have contributed
more to the loss of organic material from dried peat than carbon mineralisation had.

Long-term metal retention processes in a peat bog : Field studies, data and modellingSyrovetnik, Kristina January 2005 (has links)
The study was inspired by the need to assess long-term metal retention in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. The long-term processes in landfills are poorly known due to the relatively short time that such landfills have been in existence. Natural analogues where similar metal binding processes could be expected were therefore sought for. The work described in this thesis aims to elucidate the long-term transport and attenuation processes involved in the retention of heavy metals in a peat bog, through field studies and modelling. The Oostriku peat bog (central Estonia) has been exposed to metal-rich groundwater discharge over a long period of time and was found to have accumulated high concentrations of Fe, other heavy metals (e.g. Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn), and As. It was characterised in detail with respect to metal depth distribution and main metal binding mechanisms (using an optimised Tessier extraction scheme). The oxidation of metal sulphides in the surrounding carbonate bedrock was proposed to be a possible long-term source of heavy metals in the water emerging in a spring at the peat site. The water in the spring and peat pore-water was sampled and analysed. The dissolution sequence of the sulphide minerals and evolution of the water composition along a flowpath in the carbonate rock were modelled. Resulting aqueous phase concentration of major and minor elements are discussed in relation to governing geochemical processes. The simulated water composition was compared with that observed. Retention of metals transported with water through the peat was assessed through modelling equilibrium sorption on solid organic matter and amorphous ferric oxyhydroxide by using a simplified quantitative modelling approach and independently obtained data. Dynamic evolution of metal sorption fronts along a peat profile over time was modelled to test metal-metal competition effects. A possible formation of ferric oxyhydroxide in the peat bog was also assessed with the model. / QC 20101001

Optimering av den kemiska reningen vid Fläskebo deponi / Optimization of the Chemical Treatment at Fläskebo LandfillNilsson, Anna January 2006 (has links)
Landfill leachate contains a variety of contaminants and is created when rainwater percolates the landfill. For landfill management the leachate is the main issue that can cause problems to the environment. At the landfill of Fläskebo, Renova AB treats the leachate in a local treatment plant. The treatment consists of a chemical treatment step with chemical precipitation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration, and a final step with a carbon and peat filter. Renova has to ensure that the condition of the leachate reaches the regulation set for the landfill before it is released to the recipient. This regulation has not yet been established and a final suggestion will be given to the county administrative board in spring 2006. In this master thesis the chemical treatment of Fläskebo is optimized. A comparison between the control program and the regulation was made to estimate the contamination of the leachate. Also the effectiveness of the two steps is evaluated. For optimization, the leachate was first tested in a laboratory with different coagulants and flocculants. The purpose was to increase the precipitation of particles and metals; arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead, copper, nickel and zinc through sweep floc coagulation and hydroxide precipitation. After the laboratory tests the precipitation was tested in the treatment plant with higher pH and coagulant. Also the process control for sodium hydroxide was examined. The leachate had a small content of organic matter and nutrients, but had a large content of halogenated substances (AOX) and the heavy metals nickel and copper. High concentrations of contaminants were reduced better than low concentrations in the two treatment steps. The carbon and peat filter material also caused an increase of the arsenic content in the leachate after filtration. From the laboratory work the results showed a better reduction of metals with iron-chloride, PlusJÄRN and the anjonic polyacrylamid, Fennopol A. Because of the high content of chloride the iron- sulphate, PurFect was chosen for further tests. The optimal pH for the heavy metals arsenic, zinc, copper and nickel was between pH 9 and 9, 5. The precipitation in the treatment plant showed better results with sodium hydroxide and a higher pH, pH 9 in the flocculation basin. An increase of the coagulant PurFect from 202 mg/l to 225 mg/l meant only a higher chemical cost. The process control of sodium hydroxide showed an oscillating and unstable control performance, which may lead to a higher consumption of chemicals.

Waste Water Treatment - A Case Study : Removal of Ni, Cu and Zn through precipitation and adsorptionKarlsson, Lovisa January 2012 (has links)
Waste water containing high concentrations of dissolved metals were delivered to the environmental company SAKAB. After standard treatment procedure, involving regulation of pH and addition of flocculation agents, the water still contained nickel concentrations of 26 mg/l. Since SAKAB’s regulatory concentration limit value for nickel in outgoing water is 0.5 mg/l, further treatment was necessary. According to the supplier of the water, a complexing agent similar to EDTA had been added to the water. The aim of this study was to decrease concentrations of nickel, zinc and copper. One part of this study was the precipitation experiments as hydroxide, sulphide and adsorption to hydrous ferric oxide. The other part was adsorption to natural, organic materials such as peat, wood chips and one commercial bark compost. Adsorption to hydrous ferric oxide was the most efficient of the precipitation experiments. When 2000 mg FeCl3 was added to 100 ml waste water and pH of the solution was adjusted to pH 8, a decrease up to 74 % of total nickel concentrations was achieved. Most efficient of the adsorption experiments were the one with commercial bark compost which decreased nickel concentrations in solution up to 94 % after 20 hours of agitation.

Photosynthetic CO2 exchange and spectral vegetation indices of boreal mossesVan Gaalen, Kenneth Eric, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2005 (has links)
Moss dominated ecosystems are an important part of the global terrestrial carbon cycle. Over large areas, remote sensing can be useful to provide an improved understanding of these ecosystems. Two boreal mossess (Pleurozium and Sphagnum) were assessed using remote sensing based spectral vegetation indices for estimating biochemical capacity and photosynthetic efficiency by varying net photosynthesis rate via changes in water content. In the laboratory, changes in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and chlorophyll index coincided with declining photosynthetic capacity due to desiccation. This effect was more dramatic in Sphagnum. The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) did not vary with changes in CO2 supply as anticipated, possibly due to overriding effects of changing water content. The water band index (WBI) was strongly related to water content but this relationship showed an uncoupling in the field. Bi-directional reflectance measurements indicated what WBI was sensitive to sensor, sun, and moss surface slope angles. / xi, 110 leaves : ill. (some col.) ; 29 cm.

Σχετικά με τη χρήση τους ως ροφητικά υλικά για απορρύπανση για δυο δείγματα λιγνίτη προτείνεται η χημική τους επεξεργασία, προκειμένου να χρησιμοποιηθούν ως ροφητικά υλικά, ενώ για τα υπόλοιπα δείγματα η διαφορά στη ροφητική ικανότητα μεταξύ των μητρικών γαιανθράκων και των παραγόμενων χουμικών οξέων δεν είναι τόσο σημαντική, με αποτέλεσμα να μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί απευθείας το μητρικό υλικό / The scope of this study is the determination of the phenanthrene sorption mechanism for some Greek lignite and peat samples, as well as for their extracted humic acids. The scope is to assess their suitability for application in remediation of fresh water environments from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
For the extraction of the humic acids, the methodology provided by the IHHS (International Humic Substances Society) with some alterations, was applied. The sorption experiments were conducted by mixing 0,004 g of the sorbent within water solutions of phenanthrene at different concentrations of 30, 50, 100, 300 and 500 μg/l.
The results show that phenanthrene sorption is higher in the humic acid samples rather than in the original lignite and peat. The original samples display higher sorption at low phenanthere concentration solutions (30 μg/l) than at the denser phenanthrene concentration solution (500 μg/l). Thus, the sorption in these samples is non-linear. In order to use these materials as sorbents, the TH4 and MT6 samples might have to be treated, because sorption is higher in the humic acid fraction than in the source material. The rest of the samples display lower variation in the sorption capacity between the humic acid samples and the original samples, thus there is no need for chemical treatment.

Organo-mineral fertilizers have been used to both meet plants’ nutritional needs and
reduce producers’ reliance on mineral fertilizers. This practice improves both the use of
nutrients by plants and the soil structure due to the organic matter in these fertilizers.
This study aimed to determine the effect of organic matter sources in the composition of
organomineral fertilizers and compare it to the effect of traditional mineral fertilizers
when it comes to the initial development of sorghum. Research was carried out in a
greenhouse at the Federal University of Uberlandia, in Uberlandia, Minas Gerais,
Brazil. Sorghum seeds of grain-bearing simple hybrid 1G100 were used in the seeding
process. The experiment followed a randomized complete block design in a 4 x 3 + 2
factorial arrangement. Factors included four levels (50, 75, 100 and 125% of
450 kg ha-1, which is the recommended dose for sorghum crops), three organic matter
sources in the composition of the organomineral fertilizers (sewage sludge, filter cake,
and peat), a control (100% mineral fertilizer), and an untreated check (no fertilizers).
Each experimental plot consisted of four plants divided into two pots. Oxisol was used
in all pots. Analyses were performed at 30 and 60 days after seeding (DAS) and
targeted: plant height, stem diameter, chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B, and leaf area. After
this period, plants were removed from the soil, and had their aerial parts isolated to be
dried in an air-forced oven before measurement of their dry mass. Means of the
organomineral fertilizers outperformed those of both control and untreated check plots
in almost all variables at 30 DAS. The only exception was variable stem diameter, in
which organomineral fertilizers outperformed untreated check plots only. Sorghum
fertilized with organomineral fertilizers also showed positive results in the variables
analyzed at 60 DAS: even with dose reduction, their means were similar to those found
in control plots. Organomineral fertilizers had higher means in some variables, such as
diameter and dry mass of the aerial part, than both control and untreated check plots. In
the conditions set in this study and considering the variables herein reported,
organomineral fertilizers can substitute mineral fertilizers in the initial development of
sorghum, even with some dose reductions. / Dissertação (Mestrado)
