Diagnostika jazykových schopností u dětí s vývojovou dysfázií / Assessment of language skills of specific language impaired children

Podpěrová, Helena January 2016 (has links)
Diploma thesis Assessment of language skills of specific language impaired children deals with children with specific language impairment in preschool and early school age (6-8 years). The thesis is to map the resources that are dealing with this issue and define the concept of specific language impairment in our country and foreign environment, because it is a very problematic term The theoretical part describes the status of speech therapy and special education diagnosis of children with specific language impairment in Czech Republic and foreign countries. It maps out how this developmental disorder speech therapists and special educators diagnose, what tools to use and what diagnostic criteria used in their practices. The aim of our research activities in the framework of this thesis is to determine whether and what value could have a Battery of tests of phonological skills (Seidlová Málková, Caravolas 2013) for the diagnostic process of specific language impairment. And also try to detect whether the battery includes tests to detect potential child with specific language impairment and thus contribute to the differential diagnosis. Keywords: Specific language impairment, language assessment, diagnostic markers, Battery of tests of phonological skills

Osvojování primární gramotnosti u dětí s vývojovou dysfázií / Learning Primary Literacy of Children with Specific Language Impairment

Milanovská, Lýdia January 2016 (has links)
This thesis solves deals with special pedagogical problems of primary literacy acquisition of the children with specific language impairment. The aim is to analyze the phenomena, which disrupt the process of acquiring written language forms of the pupils with this diagnosis and to record factors, which help to streamline this process. Another task is to propose the steps to help overcome the problems caused by impaired communication skills by teaching analytic-synthetic method. The theoretical part is the basis for meeting the targets. It describes specific language impairment as one of the categories of impaired communication skills and its consequences for education. Attention is given to the topic of literacy. Emphasis is particularly given on the initial reading literacy. This period is seen in the context of the speech development and the psycholinguistic concept of literacy is introduced, where the skill of phonemic awareness has a central position. At the end of the theoretical part, the methods of teaching of reading are described. The practical part presents the research study, which was carried out in several consecutive phases: initial diagnostic phase, observation of pupils in various stages of teaching of reading, implementation of methodical support measures and the final assessment of the...

Prevence dyslexie v mateřské škole / Prevention of Dyslexia in the Field of Kindergarten Education

Hrušková, Kateřina January 2011 (has links)
This diploma final project deals with prevention of dyslexia in kindergarten. Teoretical part has three chapters. In the first part, there is a short survey of the development literacy and definition of foundations of literacy like phonemic awareness and letter knowledge. The second part describes the world of preschooler. There is a short characterization of development of child at this age. The last chapter in theoretical part is called Prevention of Dyslexia. Practical part is based on the questionnaire for teachers. The questionnaire was originally created for the purpose of the international longitudinal study ELDEL ("Establishing the Foundations of Literacy in European Languages"). The aim of this thesis is a bit different from the longitudinal study. The objective of this thesis lay in the description of the structure of teacher's practices in prevention of dyslexia, not just in literacy foundations development and find out, which activities teachers prefer. If they are inspired by czech tradition or if they know and prefer outland views of preventiv dyslexia.

Effet de l'apprentissage systématique de l'écrit sur l'acquisition de la langue orale en L2 : cas du français appris par des enfants marocains au Maroc / The effect of methodical learning of the written form on the acquisition of spoken language in L2 : the case of French learnt by Maroccans in Marroco

Martin, Carine de 15 November 2013 (has links)
This research on French-Arabic interlanguage is at the junction of psycholinguistics , cognitive psychology and didactics . It takes place in a multilingual country, Morocco (Agadir). Our study seeks to establish to what extent learning to read in French (L2) impacts the development of perception and pronunciation of this language and how important this learning is. We assume indeed that spelling and phonological skills gained through reading, could make certain phonological representations of the target language more salient. We explore this hypothesis by resorting to the acquisition of two French phonemes [e] and [y] create difficulties for Moroccan speakers. In order to verify that mastering spelling-phonological correspondences contributes to improving the quality of the phonological system of this language , we carried out a longitudinal study during a school year with Arabic-speaking Moroccan children Learning written French in Morocco. We have established a protocol for assessing oral proficiency in Arabic and French based on phonological awareness tasks (validated speech therapy tests) and on perception and expression skills. We set up to a reading test to provide information on speed , reading correction and vocabulary maturity of the subject. A questionnaire was also distributed to parents to provide insights into the linguistic environment of tested children. Result analysis shows that learning how to read in L2 consolidates writing and phonological conversion , which would allow children to own better defined phoneme categories , and consequently to better perceive and pronounce sounds that are absent from their first language phonological system.

A palavra cantada em comunidades-terreiro de origem Iorubá no Brasil: da melodia ao sistema tonal / The word sung in Yoruba origin communities in Brazil: of melody to the tonal system

Nogueira, Sidnei Barreto 05 January 2009 (has links)
This work aims at analyzing the melody-tone relationship in African origin chants in Queto houses of candomble. The stable character of the sung word has led to the analysis of musical texts. In order to implement investigations ten Nago chants have been selected. They have been recorded without instruments by the people of Saint themselves and an Yoruba chant was recorded by a native Yoruba speaker from Abeokuta. Chants have been organized in tessitures (simplified partitures) divided in verses aiming at the simultaneous visualization of the singing and lyrics; one has made, for each chant verse, with the use of the WinPitchPro program, a sonogram with the pitch wave, spectrogram and Fo measures. By comparing the chant and Yoruba speech one has initially observed three possibilities between melody pitch and phonological tone: (i) to ignore phonological tones and the meaning of words and use pitch variations to exclusively designate the melody, which would preserve musicality but would reduce the lyrical intelligibility; (ii) to preserve the regular pitch variations related to lexical tones ignoring musicality and sacrificing musicality in order to achieve intelligibility; (iii) to try to keep, even partially, the contrasts of lexical pitches without excessively restricting Fo melodical rules. In order to develop this work one has mainly followed the third hypothesis. In the analysis of both the Yoruba speech and chants and in the confrontation of Yoruba/Nago, it has been possible to identify the stableness of supra-segments of the African language. The achievement of tones by the use of melody pitches has presented the reproduction of universal phenomena such as downdrift, downstep and reciprocal processes of assimilation and spread. The analyses show the partial maintenance of the lexical tones in the sacred Nago word confirming the stable character of a word conditioned by linguistic and extra linguistic elements.

Os templates no desenvolvimento fonológico: o caso do português brasileiro / Templates in phonological development: the case of Brazilian Portuguese

This thesis investigates the transition from babble to first words in order to verify if there is continuity between the periods and identify templates. This work follows the theoretical approach to the study of development Dynamic Systems Theory (THELEN; SMITH, 1994; Kelso, 1995) and its view that the development is characterized by change, instability, variability and non linearity. The term dynamical systems, in its most generic form, means systems of elements that change over time (THELEN; SMITH, 2006, p. 258). The Whole- Word/Templatic Phonology approach is followed in the analysis of child data (VIHMAN; VELLEMAN, 2002; VIHMAN; CROFT, 2007; KEREN-PORTNOY et al., 2008). The innovative aspect of this thesis is that it relates the (des)continuity in the transition from babble to words to templates, i.e., systematic shapes that facilitate expansion of the lexicon (VIHMAN; VELLEMAN, 2000). Furthermore, this research uses quantitative method for the identification of templates. The previous literature used only qualitative methods of data collection (VIHMAN; VELLEMAN, 2002; VIHMAN; CROFT, 2007; KEREN-PORTNOY et al., 2008; WAUQUIER; YAMAGUCHI; 2012; KHATTAB; AL-TAMINI, 2012; SZREDER, 2012, among others). Thus, this research contributes by presenting a quantitative study and by observing templates behaviour through early phonological development. Data from three children aged 9 24 months are analysed. In the analysis, non linearity and instability are observed in the phonological development. In regard to the discussion on (des)continuity, the results do not present many evidences in favour of continuity. Although babble and words are produced in the same session, the two types of production show more phonological differences than similarities. The conclusion is that continuity between babble and words cannot be verified if it is assumed that phonological and phonetic aspects work independently from one another. The continuity can 10 be verified if these two modules are integrated as Articulatory /Gestural Phonology (BROWMAN; GOLDSTEIN, 1986; ALBANO, 2001) and Usage- Based Phonology/Exemplar Theory (CRISTÓFARO-SILVA, 2003) propose. The results show that different children produce similar phonological structures in their phonological development, e.g., word length, syllable structure, among others; which follow the characteristics of the target language. However, differences are found in the transition from babble to words in relation to the strategies used for lexical expansion, i.e., the use of different templates as the order of use and disuse of templates. This study observes that moments of self-organization tend to vary from child to child in the development of phonology.

Vocabulário, consciência fonológica e nomeação rápida: contribuições para a ortografia e elaboração escrita / Vocabulary, phonological awareness and rapid naming: contributions for spelling and written production

Santos, Maria Thereza Mazorra dos 29 August 2007 (has links)
This research aimed at understanding the linguistic processes involved in the learning of written language, as well as developing a protocol to analyze written text. This study included eighty-two 3rd graders with ages ranging from 9 to 10, from both private and public schools, and residents of the West region of São Paulo and suburbs. Three studies composed this investigation. The first study analyzed student performance on tests of vocabulary knowledge, phonological awareness and rapid naming for objects. All students performed as expected for their age in these tests. The second study focused on the analysis of written production, as evaluated through a word and pseudoword spelling task and a written narrative text. The spelling errors observed in these tests were compatible with the development of written skills of the subjects, however it is necessary to understand which are the spelling-strategies used by the children. Regarding text-writing skills, although the children have not yet mastered the narrative scheme, they displayed enough linguistic knowledge to elaborate original written stories in a narrative form. The proposed protocol was revealed as a practical tool to evaluate in detail several aspects involved in written text production. The third study focused on the correlations among the different performance variables analyzed, including vocabulary, phonological awareness, rapid naming tasks, spelling and production of narrative written texts.

Ferreira, Jesuelem Salvani. January 2010 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This work describes the behavior of the gerund forms in the Brazilian Portuguese variety spoken in the inland of São Paulo State. In these forms, the phenomenon of deletion of the /d/ which is part of the gerund morpheme /ndo/ - being pronounced as [no] in this variety -, can be found. This phenomenon was also investigated in other varieties of Brazilian Portuguese, which evince that it is a variable phenomenon (MOLLICA, 1989; CRISTOFARO SILVA, 1996; DALPIN & MEA, 2002; HONÓRIO, 2005; MARTINS, 2006). In this work, the description of the phenomenon is made under the perspective of the Theory of Linguistic Variation and Change (LABOV, 1972, 1994) and Lexical Phonology (KIPARSKY, 1982; LEE, 1995). The corpus of this research consists of spontaneous speech data taken from the Iboruna database, which contains samples of Brazilian Portuguese spoken in São José do Rio Preto (SP). From this database, narratives of experience (NE) of 76 interviews were selected and analyzed. These narratives were made by informants of one of both genders: (i) male or (ii) female; with family income of up to 10 minimum-wages, belonging to one of the following age-bands: (i) 7 to 15 years, (ii) 16 to 25 years, (iii) 26 to 35 years, (iv) 36 to 55 years, or (v) more than 55 years; and one of the following levels of education: (i) first four years of elementary school; (ii) last four years of elementary school; (iii) high school level or (iv) academic education level. For the variationist analysis of the occurrences, we considered, beyond the three social variables (age, educational level and gender), three linguistic variables (morphosyntactic context, intervening material between the auxiliary and the main verb in the gerund periphrasis and the type of auxiliary verb in circumlocutions). For this study, an experiment to investigate the acoustic phonetic features of the phenomenon in question...

Fort, Mathilde 05 December 2011 (has links)
Seeing the facial gestures of a speaker enhances phonemic identification in noise. The goal of this research was to assess whether this visual information can activate lexical representations. We investigated this question in adults (Experiment 1 to 4) and in children (Experiment 5). First, our results provide evidence indicating that visual information on consonant (Experiment 1) and vowel identity (Experiment 2) contributes to lexical activation processes during word recognition, when the auditory information is deteriorated by noise. Then, we also demonstrated that the mere presentation of the first two phonemes – i.e., the articulatory gestures of the initial syllable– is enough visual information to activate lexical representations and initiate the word recognition process (Experiment 3 and 4). However, our data suggest that visual speech mostly contributes in pre-lexical phonological -rather than lexical- processing in children till the age of 10 (Experiment 5). Key words : speech, visual and audiovisual speech, spoken word recognition, lexical access.

At the end of the literacy cycle, many children don?t even guaranteed basic skills of reading and writing, presenting difficulties in understanding the alphabetic principle. Many researches show that there is influence of phonological awareness on children's performance in the written language appropriation. Other studies suggest that intervention programs in phonological awareness are positive for learning of children with difficulties in reading and writing. Researches have suggested that the development of phonological awareness skills linked to the explicit teaching of letter-sound relationships favors a more effective way, the discovery of the alphabetic principle by the child. Thus, to achieve the established objective, we conducted an experimental nature of research carried out in five phases: pre-test, application of the First Phase of the intervention program, post-test 1, implementation of Second Phase of the intervention program and post-test 2. The data found in the reading and writing tests the children were analyzed in qualitative and quantitative approach. The results revealed that the participation of students in the research group in phonological awareness program, and teaching of letter-sound relationships provided an opportunity a breakthrough in the understanding of the alphabetic principle, highlighting the importance of investing in metalinguistic skills and systematic teaching of grapheme-phoneme correspondences in the literacy process. The data presented in this study suggest important educational implications with regard to teacher formation and the use of metalinguistic skills development activities, such as phonological awareness, in addition to systematic and orderly teaching of grapheme-phoneme correspondences.
