Software Support for Podcasting Mobile Lecture Content for Education in Sub-Sahara African UniversitiesMugwanya, Raymond 11 1900 (has links)
Podcasting is fast gaining traction in developing regions as a means to augment classroom instruction. Commercial podcasting tools such as Apple’s Leopard Server, Tele-task and OpenEya, despite being successfully used in the developed world (where Internet connections are fast and students have powerful multimedia devices) may not be directly transferable to the developing world due to social, economic, technical, political and cultural differences. Thus, we need to gain an understanding of podcasting in developing world Higher Education Institutions in order to develop appropriate tools. Moreover, past podcasting research shows that there is an acute lack of theoretical models, conceptual frameworks as well as evaluation models.
Consequently, this thesis employs User Centered Design techniques to offer guidance for contextual podcasting design. In particular, Participatory Action Research was used to gain a deep knowledge of developing world academics’ work context and needs, identify specific requirements, develop a novel podcasting application (called MLCAT – Mobile Learning Content Authoring Tool) and ensure that they accept and use the technology. The final stage of this research was an eight week prototype evaluation aimed at evaluating MLCAT. The main contributions of this thesis are: the identification of design opportunities for podcasting tools (using Participatory Action Research) to support faculty in developing HEIs; a podcasting information ecology model; an adaptation of podcasting to developing country HEIs and a series of design and methodological contributions relating to the design of podcasting tools and other information systems.
Findings suggest that academics and students alike valued the need for a seamless podcast production process – one that does not require expensive and sophisticated infrastructure; the ability to author short podcasts or package them into small chunks; the use of Bluetooth for access and sharing podcasts as well as building on tools already in their possession as opposed to completely new ones. This research is one of the few works that relate to podcasting in developing world Higher Education Institutions. It has implications for the design of podcasting applications through an appreciation of the usefulness of research and practice in Human-Computer Interaction for development and how easily this can be adapted to understand and improve mobile learning development practice.

Tesis

The use of pod casting revision lectures in improving learners' academic performanceRankapola, M. E. 04 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Information Technology, Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences) Vaal University of Technology / The majority of research studies completed on podcasting technology focused on the acceptance of podcasting technology in the educational settings and the challenges that it poses for higher education institutions and instructors. Very little interest has been accorded to the effect that podcasting could have on the learners‟ academic performance. Utilizing a quasi-experimental non-equivalent group posttest, a wide used research method in the education discipline, the relationship between podcasting technology and academic performance, is investigated. The quasi-experimental was performed based on data collected over a period of 12 months, in which a non-random sample of 150 learners was taken from a population group of 350 management and entrepreneurship undergraduate learners at the Tshwane University of Technology. The sample was separated into two groups, namely the experimental group of 75 students, and the control group of 75 students. Both groups were offered the same subject by the same instructor. Control group learners are learners who have already completed the subject in the first semester before the podcasting technology was introduced in the subject. The experimental group learners are learners who have completed the subject through the support of podcasting technology. The assessment marks for four formal tests of the two groups were compared by means of a t-test to determine the effect of the intervention. The outcomes of the study showed an increase in the overall mean score of the experimental group in comparison to the mean score of the control group. The number of students obtaining distinctions also increased, compared to the control group. These considerations possibly indicate a positive relationship between the availability of podcast lectures and academic performance.

Podcasting the sciences – a practical overviewBarsky, Eugene, Lindstrom, Kevin 11 1900 (has links)
University science education has been undergoing great amount of change since the commercialization of Internet a decade ago. Mobile technologies in science education can encompass more than the proximal teaching and learning environment. Podcasting, for example, allows audio content from user-selected feeds to be automatically downloaded to one’s computer as it becomes available online, and then later transferred to a portable player for user’s consumption at a convenient time and place. Enjoying a phenomenal growth in mainstream society, podcasting are asynchronous and could be provided at a distance from a classroom. This paper reports a case study from the University of British Columbia that implemented podcasting for physics content. It presents the rationale for, technical details and step-by-step guide to creating podcasts in the sciences.

The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers’ experience in education of using podcasting and what benefits they think it can bring to education. To fulfil the purpose of this study I made qualitative interviews with two teachers which work at a school where podcasting is used. The theoretical part of the report explains what podcasting is, shows use, possibilities, advantages and disadvantages and also what research indicate about the subject. The study demonstrates that there are different possibilities to change and develop today’s way of teaching. This way of working is a complement to the present education and it is not suppose to replace the way of teaching commonly used today but to facilitate education. It can be used as an aid in repetition and give the possibility to move teaching out of school, this makes it a flexible learning. It also emerged that the interviewed teachers perceived that the students had a positive attitude towards podcasting because they found it to be an interesting approach and felt familiar with the technology. They also perceived the parents reactions as positive, now they could take part of mathematics lessons through the films and thus have more insight in the school work.
