Architecture that Binds: A Place for Weddings and Funerals for a New Society

Weddings and funerals are some of the most universally profound events of our lives. Both acts, however disparate, ultimately celebrate life. This thesis draws on themes of life and regeneration in its reading of a neglected yet historically significant site in the port lands of Toronto. The changes that have occurred at the mouth of the Don mirror the changes that have occurred in Toronto from settlement to post-modernity. It is here that the thesis proposes a place that simultaneously reclaims its roots and creates a new identity for the port lands. As a means of reinhabiting this site, the design uses the power of weddings and funerals to generate a collective point of gathering that reflects the multicultural nature of Toronto today.

BridgeSPA: A Single Packet Authorization System for Tor Bridges

Tor is a network designed for low-latency anonymous communications. Tor clients form circuits through relays that are listed in a public directory, and then relay their encrypted traffic through these circuits. This indirection makes it difficult for a local adversary to determine with whom a particular Tor user is communicating. Tor may also be used to circumvent regional Internet censorship, since the final hop of a user's connection can be in a different country. In response, some local adversaries restrict access to Tor by blocking each of the publicly listed relays. To deal with such an adversary, Tor uses bridges, which are unlisted relays that can be used as alternative entry points into the Tor network. Unfortunately, issues with Tor's bridge implementation make it easy to discover large numbers of bridges. This makes bridges easy to block. Also, an adversary that hoards this information may use it to determine when each bridge is online over time. If a bridge operator also browses with Tor on the same machine, this information may be sufficient to deanonymize him. We present BridgeSPA as a method to mitigate these issues. A client using BridgeSPA relies on innocuous single packet authorization (SPA) to present a time-limited key to a bridge. Before this authorization takes place, the bridge will not reveal whether it is online. We have implemented BridgeSPA as a working proof-of-concept for GNU/Linux systems. The implementation is available under a free licence. We have integrated our implementation to work in an OpenWRT environment. This enables BridgeSPA support for any client behind a deployed BridgeSPA OpenWRT router, no matter which operating system they are running.

Development of dry ports in Småland, Sweden : Comparing the cases of Nässjö and Vaggeryd

Problem: Due to several changes in the market, economy, industry and the environment there was an increasing trend in emerging dry ports/inland terminals throughout Sweden. A dry port is still a young term in the transportation field gaining more popularity and attention. The gap in literature was found that the dynamics of dry port evolution is not yet explored. Thus, the development of the layout, services offered and involved actors of dry ports in Småland, Sweden have to be studied. Purpose:  The purpose for this report seeks to reveal how dry ports have evolved from establishment, in the area around Jönköping, and to discover in what form the dry ports can operate and compete. The study was based on the dynamics of three elements: layout, value added services and networks. Theory:  In the theoretical research the dry port concept is described. Due to the variety of descriptions, authors formed a definition for the thesis to clarify the content. Further, the literature analysis contained the characteristics, classifications and reasons of development as well as involved actors, advantages and disadvantages, location, layout, design and performance measurements. Method: The case study method was chosen to cover the identified gap. This qualitative study with semi-structured interviews conducted face-to-face and by telephone was accomplished with fourteen experts. If the authors faced problems regarding phone interviewees, open questions were prepared and sent to the respondent via email. The data gathering phase was followed by the analysis after which the conclusions were drawn. Conclusion:   The thesis proves that the development of dry ports is affected by a large number of internal and external factors. Terminals need to execute a thorough analysis of the market and the location in which they plan to operate. Therefore, the market has to be analysed continuously in order to keep improving their networks and value added services. Furthermore, the layout has to be adjusted for the changes and measurements have to be performed in order to increase the efficiency.

The hub port selecting behavior model of container liners¡XAn example of Kaohsiung Harbor's container liners

Kaohsiung Harbor is the most significant container harbor of Taiwan. Embracing the excellent geographical features for container transportation, it used to be the most attractive hub port for most of container liners. However, because of Taiwan¡¦s conservative cross-strait policy and the transformation of industries, Kaohsiung Harbor became less and less attractive for its clients in recent decade. To figure out a solution for the authority of Kaohsiung Harbor, the researcher used the Grounded Theory to interview 10 container transportation experts. Then find out 97 concept of how container liners choose their hub port when they¡¦re planning their routes. After this, the researcher integrates those concepts into 16 categories and finds their organic connection in between. Finally, researcher refines 5 central categories out of the 16 categories. Base on the relations between the central categories, researcher creates the hub port selecting model of container liners. According to what researcher found, we acknowledge that within this model, the most important hub port selecting factor for container liners is Operation Cost, then goes to Efficiency, Influence of Authority, Government Policy, and Safety.

Multi-port DC-DC Power Converter for Renewable Energy Application

In recent years, there has been lots of emphasis put on the development of renewable energy. While considerable improvement on renewable energy has been made, there are some inherent limitations for these renewable energies. For example, for solar and wind power, there is an intermittent nature. For the fuel cell, the dynamics of electro-chemical reaction is quite slow compared to the electric load. This will not be acceptable for modern electric application, which requires constant voltage of constant frequency. This work proposed and evaluated a new power circuit that can deal with the problem of the intermittent nature and slow response of the renewable energy. The proposed circuit integrates different renewable energy sources as well as energy storage. By integrating renewable energy sources with statistical tendency to compensate each other, the effect of the intermittent nature can be greatly reduced. This integration will increase the reliability and utilization of the overall system. Moreover, the integration of energy storage solves the problem of the slow response of renewable energy. It can provide the extra energy required by load or absorb the excessive energy provided by the energy sources, greatly improving the dynamics of overall system. To better understand the proposed circuit, "Dual Active Bridge" and "Triple Active Bridge" were reviewed first. The operation principles and the modeling were presented. Analysis and design of the overall system were discussed. Controller design and stability issues were investigated. Furthermore, the function of the central controller was explained. In the end, different simulations were made and discussed. Results from the simulations showed that the proposed multi-port DC-DC power converter had satisfactory performance under different scenarios encountered in practical renewable energy application. The proposed circuit is an effective solution to the problem due to the intermittent nature and slow response of the renewable energy.

An Analysis on Economies of Scale and Scope of Port Operations for the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau

This paper provides a cost-efficient business mix and principles of regulation for the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau. The authors use a multi-product model that represents port operations with three variables: mooring, stevedoring, and warehousing. A Fourier cost function is used to calculate several cost indicators. The sample covers monthly data in 1997-2001. By analyzing the cost indicators obtained, it is found that both individual operations and all of the operations together as a whole exhibit significant economies of scale and scope. Moreover, the presence of excess capacity in stevedoring and warehousing have been detected, as well as a presence of cost complement between mooring and stevedoring. Port operations cannot improve economic efficiency with perfect competition. On the contrary, the government should design economically reasonable regulations. Because port operations can not improve economic efficiency by market mechanism, port operations should be regulated by a proper authority in order to effectuate maximum social welfare.

A Study on Information sharing in Marine Supply Chain : A Case Study of Container Terminal

To satisfy the transportation service request of clients and to control the associated costs are the main targets of marine container transportation industry. To achieve the transportation service for clients, plenty of participants and procedures are involved in the Marine Supply Chain (MSC), leading to the need of exchanging a huge amount of information. This study is focused on how and what kind of information sharing should be exchanged in these participants and procedures of Maritime Supply Chain. We use UMM (UN/CEFACT Modeling Methodology of ebXML business process) to investigate the business processes between participants in Marine Supply Chain. We also conducted a case study in an important location of maritime supply chain, i.e., Port Container Terminal to discuss about the information sharing content and sharing pattern in MSC processes. The result shows that in the marine cargo delivery process, Port Container Terminal is responsible for Berth Schedule Planning, Berth Planning, Yard Planning and Gate Planning to achieve the container transport service for the clients. Therefore, plenty of participants and procedures have to be involved in the Marine Supply Chain, and plenty of information have to be interchanged. However, beside Customs Clearance procedure, there are no common information technology platform and standard for information interchange in marine container transportation industry. To improve the service quality of domestic marine cargo delivery, we have to establish an information sharing system. Moreover, I personally hope this study can be used as a reference of information system analysis and design. Improving the information sharing standardization and building information sharing pattern can simplify and improve the procedures of marine cargo delivery system.

The influence of Cross-Strait direct shipping on Kaohsiung container Hub position

The rapid economic development in China has led to increasing freight transport, as well as fierce competition among the hubs in the region, such as Hong Kong, Busan, Kaohsiung Harbor, and new harbors in Shenzhen and Shanghai. The transport not only support the rapid development of harbors in the region but also result in intense port competition. The competitive advantages, such as location, facility, efficiency, and highly concentrated ship routes, possessed by the harbors are not everlasting. In the face of changing environment and competition, the competitive advantages may be lost. When competing in a different niche market, the location advantage may turn into disadvantage, even damaging its leading position in worse cases. In response to changes, harbor administrators should probe into the future trend in changes of the freight transport market, discuss all possible scenarios, sense the potential risks and opportunities, seize the opportunities and utilize the existing advantages to build up the competitive advantages for the future. Compared to Kaohsiung Harbor, harbors in China, such as Shanghai and Shenzhen, as the entry gates to the main economic and trade zone in China and the central region in terms of sources of goods, have developed into regional pivot harbors. Due to the barrier of Cross-Strait direct shipping, some scholars in Taiwan believe that Kaohsiung Harbor is facing the problem of becoming periphery. However, even after the direct route comes into practice, the competition from harbors in China may be a threat to Kaohsiung Harbor, even occur haidding effects to take over its existing transit goods. The position of Kaohsiung Harbor may be challenged. This study investigates the potential influence of Cross-Strait direct shipping and the competition from China on the quantity of containers, route planning, and shipping business investment with questionnaire survey on sea transportation businesses, and constructs possible scenarios in short-term (2004-206), medium term (2007-2010), long-term (2011-2020). Before the Cross-Strait direct shipping into practice, Kaohsiung Harbor will continue to grow due to continuous economic development in the region. If the Cross-Strait direct shipping comes into practice or the Chinese government permits more direct shipping harbor, Southern China, Fukien, and Zhujiang Delta will become the main regions in terms of sources of goods. However, the rate of growth may not meet the expectation. In the long-term (2011-2020), due to the rapid of the quantity of containers in China and the transit ability of harbors in China, the route structure and the shipping business investment in Kaohsiung Harbor will suffer more obvious disadvantageous impact.

An Efficient Scheme for Processing Arbitrary Lumped Multi-Port Devices in the Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method

Developing full-wave simulators for high-frequency circuit simulation is a topic many researchers have investigated. Generally speaking, methods invoking analytic pre-processing of the device¡¦s V-I relations (admittance or impedance) are computationally more efficient than methods employing numerical procedure to iteratively process the device at each time step. For circuits providing complex functionality, two-port or possibly multi-port devices whether passive or active, are sure to appear in the circuits. Therefore, extensions to currently available full-wave methods for handling one-port devices to process multi-port devices would be useful for hybrid microwave circuit designs. In this dissertation, an efficient scheme for processing arbitrary multi-port devices in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed. The device¡¦s admittance is analytically pre-processed and fitted into one grid cell. With an improved time-stepping expression, the computation efficiency is further increased. Multi-port devices in the circuit can be systematically incorporated and analyzed in a full-wave manner. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparison with results from the equivalent current-source method and is numerically stable.
