Local Economic Development (LED) challenges facing the Local Government in the Limpopo Province : the case of Motumo Trading Post in the Molemole Local Municipality of the Capricorn District MunicipalityMachaka, Eric Selaelo January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (M.Dev.) -- University of Limpopo, 2012 / The study focused on the Local Economic Development (LED) challenges facing the
local government in Limpopo Province. The specific study area was Motumo Trading
Post located in Molemole Local Municipality. Molemole Local Municipality is one of the
five municipalities in the Capricorn District Municipality. The study was qualitative in
nature and included some elements of quantitative research in the form of numbers,
graphs and tables and concentrated on the functionality of the Motumo Trading Post
project. The respondents in this study were the community members of Matoks (known
as Botlokwa in Sepedi), the Councillors of Molemole Municipality, managers of both
Molemole local Municipality and Capricorn District Municipality, the traditional leaders
and mayors of Molemole Local Municipality and Capricorn District Municipality.
The study indicates that the local government, through municipalities is faced with
challenges of bringing about economic growth to the poor people, especially in rural
areas, through local economic development projects. The findings in this study indicate
that Motumo Trading Post, which is a government initiative to improve the standard of
living of Matoks community, has had no impact since its completion. The community of
Matoks did not benefit from the project and the plans by the municipalities were not
realised. The study also shows that not enough was done to involve the stakeholders in
the planning and development of the project.

Social democratization or political manipulation? : social funds in Egypt and BoliviaEl-Mahdi, Rabab. January 2005 (has links)
"Inclusion" in the broad sense of access to, and participation in, public policy and services has been lacking in the majority of developing countries---whether authoritarian or democratic---due to highly skewed political, social and economic power structures. To understand why this tends to be the case, the dissertation provides a political economy model for understanding civil society, arguing that the evolution of civil society and its potential as a vehicle for inclusion are conditioned by the economic imperatives in place and the state prerogatives. More specifically, I question the extent to which the neoliberal model allows civil society to fulfill this role, by examining the impact of Social Funds (SFs), a key social policy institution created and promoted solely under the neoliberal model, on civil society in Egypt and Bolivia. / I argue that neoliberalism severely limits the possibility of: citizenship construction, achieving development synergy between the state and civil society, or strengthening the latter. These limitations are structural, inherent to the neoliberal development model and the changes it has brought about economically and politically. The research shows how these changes have manifestations within the state, the economy and civil society and more specifically social policy. Just as important, there are limitations intrinsically grounded in the structures found in many developing countries, pre-neoliberal changes. Such structures, I argue, do not allow new institutions like SFs to push forward such an ideal three-way relationship among the economy, state and civil society. Rather than strengthening civil society and creating development synergy, SFs are shown to be just an attempt to give neoliberal policies a human face and subdue any potential for structural changes. / More generally, by contrasting the dynamics of civil society under neoliberalism in a developing country with a democratic regime (Bolivia) with those of a soft authoritarian regime (Egypt). I argue that a dichotomous framework, which sees democracy as antithetically opposed to authoritarianism is not necessarily appropriate to the analysis of developing countries. The cases illustrate that the state and civil society, under two-different regime types, continue to share a number of similarities.

Identity projects and positive youth development: The importance of efficacy, integrity, and belonging during adolescenceBullen, Patricia L. January 2010 (has links)
Theory and research have indicated that well-being can be enhanced via the fulfilment of three key well-being concerns or needs, namely efficacy, integrity, and belonging. This thesis used a positive youth development framework to explore well-being concern experiences within the context of a young person’s most salient activities and goals, referred to here as identity projects (Harré, 2007). Guided by an adaptation of the identity project model (Harré, 2007), using a longitudinal design, this thesis incorporated both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore how identity projects were negotiated during adolescence; what impact well-being concerns had on commitment to projects; and how this related to subjective well-being (SWB).
In the quantitative study, 162 ethnically diverse Year 12 high school students participated at time one (T1); and one year later 87 students took part at time two (T2). Participants completed an adaptation of the Personal Project Analysis tool (Little, 1983), and two independent measures of SWB. The main foci of the quantitative study were to explore the predictive value of each well-being concern to project commitment and SWB; and to investigate if commitment mediated the link between well-being concerns and SWB.
For the qualitative study, narrative interviews were conducted among 16 adolescents at three time points – Years 12 and 13, and after completing high school. The main foci of the interviews were to investigate how well-being concerns were voiced within the context of specific projects; and to gain insight into how projects were negotiated during life transitions.
The quantitative results showed efficacy and integrity, but not belonging, were predictors of concurrent commitment at T1 and actual commitment to T1 projects at T2. The mediating role of commitment (between the well-being concerns and SWB) was, however, not supported. Instead, each well-being concern directly predicted different aspects of SWB, and these relationships changed over time. Overall, experiences of efficacy and belonging, within identity projects, enhanced SWB in the short term, while only experiences of integrity enhanced SWB, namely life satisfaction, in the long term. The qualitative results indicated experiences of efficacy and belonging were most prevalent within leisure pursuits, while integrity was most commonly discussed within education and career projects.

The main goal of this study was to argue the subject of employer’s participation in organizational social projects and actions, collating it with the thematic of the Participative Management assisted by the Information Technologies as a way to increase such participation in the Diretoria Regional do Espírito Santo da Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos’ Social Projects and Actions, coordinated for its Comitê Regional de Ações Sociais. The research found as main results that employer’s participation on organizational social project and actions of the studied enterprise still is weak, but latently potential; besides, more definitions, politics, support, two-ways communication-channels and enterprise openness’ are essential to its employer’s participation became possible. Integration, expectations, satisfaction, omission, identification, chance, mission, frustration, refuse, profile compatibility, spirit-state philosophy, contribution and action are some of the declared directions and for times indirectly identified in the answers of the collaborators in general on its participation in projects and social actions. These evidences corroborate the adopted theoretical framework for the participation’s understanding, especially the volunteer kind and occurring at the workplace, its senses and forms of management and increasing, especially when social projects and actions are about organizational initiatives. On the other hand this research revealed that if makes necessary to give a better use to the available technological resources already present in the studied organization as a way to benefit its social projects and actions and to make its management become more open to the employer’s participation.
