Abstract: The objective was to understand and to analyze the quality and visibility of two scientific journals Bolivian: The Bolivian Physics Journal and Ecology in Bolivia journal. The research attempted to answer the following questions: 1st) Does the scientometric proposal helps to analyze the visibility of the journals? 2nd) Do the regional experiences (mainly Latin American ones) offer inputs to support this analysis? 3rd) Does the Bolivian context benefits or hinds the development and visibility of the publications? 4th) Finally, do Bolivian journals fulfill the minimum criteria of quality in the regional context? Among the main results, it stands out that, despite the scientometrics model is valid and it guides a lot of the studies related to the quality and visibility, it does not permit (through its two main mesures: citation and impact), to understand the situation of the scientific production in Bolivia, due to the low presence of publications at international, regional and local indexes. Besides, there exists ignorance about the importance of being part of the international records and there is also a poor developed scientific culture at the academic spaces of the country. About the Bolivian context conditions for the production of scientific magazines, it can be concluded that the development and the survival of the great majority of the journals has been hindered, mainly by financial problems, the low priority given to the issue from the national public policy and because some factors related to the editorial production process. Finally, the scientific magazines analized fulfill the majority of the norms and visibility criteria, being necessary to promote its value and integration into the national context and the visibility into the international scope. The methodology used in the study was qualitative, based in documental review and interviews. This methodology includes also criteria for the selection and the extrinsic and intrinsic analysis of the Bolivian scientific journals. / Doutorado / Politica Cientifica e Tecnologica / Mestre em Política Científica e Tecnológica

Previous issue date: 2017 / Universidade Federal Fluminense.
Mapeia as
Sim / The aim of the research is to study the scientific production of the brazilian university
doctorate professors available on independent publishing platforms. The independent
publication consists of the publication of any book or multimedia resource by the author
without the intervention of a third party established as an editor. The specific objectives
are: identify the Brazilian publishing platforms, identify the professors who have
published scientific books in the last 10 years in these platforms and to verify the
characteristics of this production. As a methodological strategy, a sample was adopted,
using as empirical universe the Brazilian doctorate teachers enrolled in five Brazilian
publishing platforms. To meet the proposed objectives, the research mapped the
platforms (national and foreign), the authors, the books produced and the editorial
features of the works. In the universe of national platforms, 43 professors from
Brazilian universities were found. In relation of methodology, the technique used is the
survey and the instrument of data collection adopted is the questionnaire. As a
conclusion it is stated that academic authors from all areas are publishing on online
platforms. The research demonstrated that most authors (75%) were very pleased with
the publication of their work on the online platforms. And they are generally satisfied
with the process itself. In the academic environment where publishing speed is
paramount for the advancement of science, independent publishing on the platforms
brings the resolution of this problem because it was pointed out as the greatest advantage by the respondents. Disadvantages were limited promotion and market.

The future of UK university presses in the electronic environmentHardy, Rachel L. January 2005 (has links)
Scholarly communication of all types is changing dramatically with the introduction of electronic technologies. This new environment means that standalone print publishing risks being left behind, and as many STM journals acquired or launched by commercial publishers have been subject to dramatic price rises in the last few years, there has been much talk of ways to by-pass commercial publishers. The scholarly publishing market is fertile ground for innovation and there has been a lack of objective research regarding the UK university press. Despite the many changes that have occurred in the scholarly publishing industry in recent years, university presses in the UK that have not been in the forefront of innovation have remained minor players. The research focused on the university press, it's current situation and it's role in the electronic future. The research included: case studies that were conducted at both UK and USA university presses, along with the corresponding libraries, a questionnaire which was sent to academic authors that had published with both a university press and a commercial publishing house, and both qualitative and quantitative questionnaires sent to all operating UK university press directors. The thesis argues that university presses (in particular the smaller presses), as not for-profit organisations, are in a prime position to increase their power in the scholarly publishing system and can make changes to provide valued services to the Higher Education Community. Findings show that university presses, both in the USA as well as the UK, have faced, and continue to face change. Lack of funding and HEI support continues to make the traditional publishing role of the university presses difficult, and, in many cases, has caused the closure and sale of university presses in the UK. The university press continues to play an important role, and will continue to do so in the near future. However, in order for smaller university presses in the UK to remain sustainable, they must continue to adapt to, and take advantage of, change, recognise the value they add to the scholarly communication system and not rely on others to improve their situation. They cannot remain static in a changing environment. Through the work with university presses three potential business plans are proposed for a UK organisation of university presses, along with two business models to help the presses adapt to the changing environment and continue to play a role that is required by the HEI. Based on the results and conclusions of the research recommendations are made to stakeholders and ideas for further research are identified.

Current awareness services for web-based scholarly information sourcesMafa, Ntsopana Carol 12 January 2009 (has links)
M. Inf. / It has become increasingly difficult for end-users to locate, select and organise information published via the World Wide Web. This is largely due to the scattered nature of the Web and its ever-increasing use as publishing infrastructure. More scholarly information is also being published in multimedia format through the Web. Throughout the years, current awareness services and later Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) have provided the means for scholars to keep abreast of the literature in print sources. Today such information is also published via the Web, hence scholars need to have a mechanism to keep abreast of the information published in digital format. Research was conducted to investigate guidelines scholars could use to stay abreast of new Web content. The investigation employed both a literature survey and an empirical method of collecting research data. The literature survey was conducted to establish trends in current awareness services and SDI, the use of the Web for disseminating and retrieving digital information, the impact of the Web on the scholarly communication process and current methods for keeping up to date with Web content. Empirical research in the form of structured interviews was executed to establish the needs of scholars regarding the spectrum of current awareness services that provide Web-based sources. The findings obtained from structured interviews and by means of the literature survey were used to develop a set of guidelines scholars could use to stay abreast of information published via the Web.

Transnational Scottish book marketing to a diasporic audience, 1995-2015Noorda, Rachel January 2016 (has links)
The thesis examines transnational Scottish book marketing to a diasporic audience from 1995 to 2015. The study addresses the research question: what makes marketing of Scottish-interest books from Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the publishing industry successful transnationally? The data underlying the research comes from semi-structured interviews with members of publishing organisations in Scotland and members of Scottish heritage organisations worldwide, case studies of the marketing histories of economically successful books targeting the diaspora, and narrative rhetorical criticism of the online book blurbs of Scottish-interest books by Scottish publishers. The qualitative results demonstrate that the marketing of Scottish-interest books from SMEs in the publishing industry is successful transnationally when creative relationship marketing through storytelling is emphasised; icons, symbols and narratives from Scotland’s place brand are utilised; and communication of value is targeted to specific subcultures of consumption (like the Scottish diaspora) that transcend national boundaries. Adopting the definition of marketing as the communication of value of a product or service, the study analyses the influencers, characteristics, and participants of that communication. The research impacts those individuals and organisations, particularly Scottish publishing companies, who are involved in the twenty-first century Scottish book trade. The thesis recommends that to reach the diaspora audience, Scottish publishers need to make a more united effort under Publishing Scotland to approach and partner with Scottish heritage organisations; create working relationships with Global Scot (and Scottish Enterprise more generally), Scottish Development International, Visit Scotland, and Event Scotland; and become more involved in tourism events relating to the Scottish diaspora.

When outputs of artistic research meet academic infrastructures : Antelopes in the horse penWahlström, Annika January 2021 (has links)
Artistic research is a relatively new and understudied topic in scholarly communication within Library and information science. This knowledge deficit, combined with ill-fitting systems and categories, maintains the status of artistic research as something mysterious and different. As a result, knowledge produced through artistic research may not be justly represented in the academic infrastructures, and not be made available with the same integrity as traditional research output. The aim of this study is to map the publishing landscape of artistic research in Sweden and to describe how outputs of artistic research relate to current academic infrastructures. An inductive analysis of the units of academic output listed by the researchers themselves as publications of research shows how they are represented in, and outside of, the archiving systems. The analysis is supported by document theory, Kuhn's theory of scientific paradigms, and the classification theory of Bowker and Star. Findings suggest that publishing practices on the level of each project are influenced by institutional affiliation. Researchers are forced to a trade-off between statistical visibility in institutional repositories and coherent content visualization in extra-institutional channels. The institutional infrastructures designed for traditional output lack guidance for artistic output, which results in in consistency in registration, poor quality of representation, and inconsistent metadata. Channels outside of the institution lack discoverability and statistical visibility.

Lesk a bída DTP: desktop publishing a běžná praxe českých vydavatelství / The splendors and miseries of DTP: desktop publishing and common practice of Czech publishing housesFalta, Matěj January 2020 (has links)
Diploma thesis Te splendors and miseries of DTP: desktop publishing and common practice of Czech publishing houses tries to map the current technical and personnel aspect of the DTP departments within Czech publishing houses. It uses a quantitative method of questionnaire survey. In the practical part of the research, it managed to obtain data from nine of the ten selected publishers. It was chosen on the basis of their readership with the help of data from the Union of Publishers. Undoubtedly, the main contribution of this thesis is the topic itself - text focuses on a group of media professionals, who are crucial for proper functioning of the print media, although it is constantly overlooked by academia. Tis diploma thesis does not bring any revolutionary knowledge about the feld of print media in the Czech Republic, although with the obtained data it is possible to at least partially analyze jobs and style of work of media professionals in DTP departments. Te work is a small quantitative contribution to the academic discussion, which unfortunately is not currently taking place, although it should.

The Digital World of Self-Publishing : A qualitative multiple case study examining how digitalization has influenced self-publishing authors.Oskarsson, Elin, Bergström, Victoria January 2022 (has links)
Background: The third revolution, also called the digital revolution, has challenged the traditional way of publishing and the existing business models. Digitalization has become the center of this development and with innovations such as the internet and computers, a whole new world of possibilities for authors have opened up, including self-publishing. Purpose: This thesis aims to advance the knowledge on the influence of digitalization in the self-publishing book industry in general and for self-publishing authors in particular. This information will further the current understanding of self-publishing practices and guide future digital development. Method: This study was conducted with an inductive qualitative approach under the interpreventism paradigm, additionally, this study is conducted with a case study approach that was chosen to best capture the phenomenon. The primary data was collected through semi-structured interviews with self-published authors, and a thematic analysis was applied to interpret the empirical findings and relate them to the theory presented. Conclusion: The findings shows that digitalization has been having a large influence in the positive direction on the publishing industry in general and self-publishing authors in particular. In addition, the findings show that digitalization has enabled people to become self-publishing authors and thereby create their own lucrative businesses. The findings also highlighted the major development the digitalization has created with networking since the digitalization has enabled new digital social media channels to establish and thereby ease the networking and marketing process for businesses.
