A Masque of 'Ours': Dramatics in the Cornish Colony

The Cornish Colony (1895 - 1920) was a group of artists, writers, actors, musicians and public figures attracted to the rural beauty of Cornish, New Hampshire. The colony developed into a social and innovative community of common interests and artistic values that included over 75 artists who shared a love of classical traditions in literature and art. Colony Members included: Augustus Saint-Gardens, Thomas Dewing, Charles Adams Platt, Louis Evan Shipman, Juliet Barrett Rublee, Maxfield Parrish, Lucia Fairchild Fuller, Percy MacKaye and Winston Churchill. This thesis will explore the theatrical productions in the colony based in collaboration between visual and theatrical artists in the Colony and how this collaboration extended to the townspeople. It will also explore how the Colony’s dramatics had an influence on the artistic growth of Cornish and the surrounding Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire.

À partir d’une lecture d’écrits publiés et inédits de Vincenzo Borghini (1515-1580), cette thèse s’interroge sur le rôle que ce moine bénédictin florentin joua dans la politique culturelle des Médicis, et plus particulièrement sur la manière dont il concilia érudition et conscience politique, passion pour l'art et respect des nouvelles prescriptions de l’Église, élitisme culturel et diffusion des savoirs. La pratique historiographique avait un rôle d’importance alors que le duc Côme Ier ambitionnait de consolider le rôle politique de la Toscane en Italie et parmi les grandes puissances européennes par l’obtention du titre de grand-duc. Après avoir espéré que l’Empereur lui en accorderait la couronne, il se tourna vers la papauté. Pris entre de tels enjeux, Borghini, conseiller du prince aux fonctions multiples, oeuvra de manière aussi efficace que complexe. Sa pratique de l’histoire, familiarisée avec la tradition, mais fondée sur des méthodes d’approches nouvelles, évolua en adéquation avec ce qu’il nommait les «circustanze de’ tempi di parte». Les jeunes années de Borghini permettent de comprendre le rôle de premier plan qu’il tint auprès de la cour ducale. Ses études sur l’histoire s’enracinent dans ses années de formation et sa rencontre avec des personnalités comme Vettori et Vasari. Il donnera à ce dernier des conseils fondamentaux pour la conception des Vite. Les années 1560 sont celles d’une nouvelle pratique : Borghini fut l’un des principaux responsables des traités descriptifs des grands apparats dont il avait au préalable été le concepteur en tant qu’auteur des programmes iconographiques. Pour leur rôle dans la construction d’une mémoire collective de la Toscane, ces textes peuvent être considérés comme une forme de micro-histoire. Les années 1570 sont celles du passage de la micro-histoire des descriptions d’apparats à la rédaction et à la correction de traités d’histoire universelle. L’enjeu politique n’est alors plus l’obtention du titre de grand-duc mais sa légitimation. Les recherches historiques de Borghini permettent de synthétiser toutes ses activités au service des Médicis : il n’eut de cesse de se servir de l’Histoire du passé pour célébrer la Toscane du présent, qui, au-delà des Médicis, était son ultime objectif. / Stemming from published and unbublished writings of Vincenzo Borghini (1515-1580), this Dissertation questions the role Florentine Benedictine friar Vincenzo Borghini (1515-1580) played in the cultural policies of the Medici, particularly the way he reconciled erudition and political consciousness, his passion for art and his respect for the new Church prescriptions. The use of History was important at a time when Cosimo was trying to strengthen the political clout of Tuscany, in Italy and among great European powers, by obtaining the grand-duke crown. Having hoped, in vain, that the Emperor would grant him this title, he turned to the papacy. In the face of such stakes, the role of Borghini, a man with multiple hats, was a complex one. The way he made use of history evolved in conjunction with what he called the «circustanze de’ tempi di parte». Borghini's young years help us understand the essential position he occupied within the ducal court. His approach to history finds its roots in his formative years and his acquaintance with prominent people like Vettori and Vasari. He provided the latter with fundamental advice for the theoretical conception of the Vite. The 60s were testament to a new approach: Borghini was, with a few others, in charge of writing up the treaty describing the great pageants he himself had originally devised. Given their role in the elaboration of an oriented memory, those texts can be considered to be a kind of kind of micro-history. The 70s showed the transition from the micro-history of descriptions of the pageants to writing and correcting treaty dealing with universal history. Obtaining the the title of Grand duke is not any more politically at stake; what matters now is making sure it is legitimized. Borghini's historical research synthesizes all the activities he carried out while serving the Medici family. He endeavored to use past history to celebrate Tuscany's present, which, above and beyond the Medici, was his ultimate aim.

An application of theory to various reality television shows in order to discuss the emergence and encouragement of the false self in our society is the focus of this work. Toddlers and Tiaras, Hoarders and Sister Wives are the three television shows that will be analyzed by using content analysis in order to examine the effects of consumerism, narcissism and the emergence of the false self. The limitless character of the economy coupled with narcissism and an increased focus on the self contributes to the development of the false self within the individual. People may not even be aware of the push to be narcissistic, focused on our own biographies and self-promotion, yet people are aware of their suffering and unhappiness. Many individuals are left questioning why it is that they are never completely satisfied even as they accumulate notoriety, success, material wealth and possessions. An ideology of greatness and being the best is found in so many avenues of our daily lives, and at times it can be overwhelming, and if we do not possess these skills and qualities we are encouraged to just fake it.

Speaking Out of the Dust: Religious Reenactments with the Specific Iconic Identity of Place

Sometimes, the place where a play is performed is as important as or more important than the play itself. The first known theatrical rituals were performed in spaces which came to hold deep religious significance. Many religious traditions regard certain places as sacred because of spiritually significant events which took place there, sometimes involving the presence of Deity. In an effort to build on that sacrality, sometimes religious cultures bring theatre to these spaces, which, in turn, tend to alter the nature of the theatrical event. This seems especially true in regards to theatre which presents a re-enactment of the events which originally sacralized the performance space. Creating a theatrical performance at the same space, and recreating the same event which made the space sacred in the first place, gives the theatrical event a reflexive quality which performances in a space designated for theatre do not have. The Passion of Osiris in Ancient Egypt and the celebrations and commemorations of the early Christian Church are two examples of theatrical reenactments of sacred events in sacred spaces. Although such performances have been uncommon since those of the early Christians, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers two comparable performances today (the Hill Cumorah Pageant and the Nauvoo Pageant); they are also reenactments of sacred events framed by the sacred spaces where they originally occurred. The main commonality of my focus is the sacred physical space which frames each of the performances as a sort of ethereal proscenium arch or a silent witness of sacred events.

A stunning portrait of diversity? : Gender, race, and nation in Miss Universe Japan 2015

The aim of this thesis is to study how gender, race, and nation are represented in Miss Universe Japan 2015. I investigate how the top five participants are represented in relation to Japanese ideal femininity and what these representations contribute to. Furthermore, I examine how global ideals have impacted the outcome of the pageant. The material consists of recordings of the Miss Universe Japan 2015 pageant, which is available on YouTube. The material is analyzed using a context focused textual analysis. Stuart Hall’s theories of representation are used to understand how representations work. Judith Butler’s theory of performative gender and Floya Anthias’ and Nira Yuval-Davies’ theories of how gender relates to nation are used to understand how the construction of the nation intersects with the construction of gender. Michael Billig’s theory of banal nationalism is used to illustrate that beauty pageants are nationalistic practices. Lastly, theories of whiteness, both in the West and Japan, are applied to understand how race and national values interact. The top five participants in Miss Universe Japan 2015 are analyzed one by one and their representations are contrasted to the ideals of the Japanese woman. Moreover, the impact of global ideals on the pageant is discussed. I find that the representation of the top five participants both reproduces and challenges the ideal femininity in Japan, thus widening the limits for the Japanese womanhood. On the other hand, these challenges, and also the reproductions, largely follow global ideals, which leads to an essentialization of global beauty.
