The main goal of this paper is to discuss the tradition of Bulgarian folk music based on three significant folk-inflected compositions by Pancho Vladigerov, and thereby to contribute to the literature on Vladigerov's compositional style and influences. For this purpose, I have chosen three of his most popular and frequently performed compositions which are also representative of the stylistic trends in his music. They are: Bulgarian Rhapsody (op.16, 1922) for Violin and Piano, Song from Bulgarian Suite (op.21, 1927) for Violin and Piano and Shumen Miniatures (op. 29, 1934) for Solo Piano.

This thesis presents an in-depth discussion and analysis of the stylistic influences of Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov (1899-1978), and their presentation in his Rhapsody Vardar , Opus 16. Vladigerov's background includes studies in both his native Bulgarian folk music, as well as formal western training at two different music academies in Berlin. The first chapter provides relevant biographical information, and explores aspects of Vladigerov's compositions which derive from Western European traditions, including a discussion of the composers and styles that influenced his writing. This is done through discussion and analysis of his Three Pieces for Piano , Opus 15, a work written in the same year as his Rhapsody Vardar . Chapter two provides a general overview of Bulgarian folk music, especially during the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chapter three brings together these observations in an analysis of Vladigerov's landmark piano work, Vardar Rhapsody .

"Triumph of the Vanquished: Pancho Villa's Army in Revolutionary Mexico" studies the origins and formation of Francisco "Pancho" Villa's Division del Norte in the states of Chihuahua, Durango, and Coahuila during the Mexican Revolution of 1910. It demonstrates the manner by which guerilla cells based on a military hierarchy grew to brigade-size fighting units and later morphed into the Division. Once fully functional, the Division became a formidable force that achieved legendary status in Mexico's history. After tracing the villistas' rise and decline, the dissertation examines the lives of Pancho Villa's followers after 1920 when many became colonists in lands granted to them by Mexico's government. In 1920, the villistas signed a formal peace agreement with the central government and received properties on four colonies, two in Chihuahua and two in Durango. To analyze villismo past 1920, the dissertation focuses on El Pueblito, a colony located in the northwest region of Chihuahua. It highlights the lives of those ex-villistas turned agriculturalists, an aspect of the Revolution studied by only a few scholars.The general intent of this work is to reveal that ex-villistas -- those who were not a part of the surrender process in 1920 and had separated from the Division after their defeat at the battle of Celaya in 1915 -- continued their political struggle in Chihuahua past 1920 and beyond World War II as a part of the Unificacion de Veteranos de la Revolucion, an institution created in 1946 by veterans of the Revolution in the state. As influential and active members of the institution, the ex-villistas pressured local and national government for veteran assistance. At the same time, the former revolutionaries succeeded, through their involvement in the Unificacion, in maintaining a villista legacy, participating as they did in local events and in the construction of statues throughout the state dedicated to their fallen leader.

A través de un análisis y contextualización de las obras de Francisco "Pancho" Fierro se buscará descubrir lo satírico, burlesco y jocoserio dentro de este corpus de obras para justificar un entendimiento más profundo de la producción del artista. El interés es colocar las obras de Fierro en un espacio temporal y geográfico que ensambla las condiciones que afectarán el contenido, técnica y distribución de las obras de arte, principalmente sus dibujos a la aguada. Al artista, al habérsele atribuido una clasificación de costumbrista se le categoriza como reproductor de tipos limeños que limitan la interpretación de su corpus artístico a la imitación visual ilustrada. La presente tesis buscará profundizar en los contenidos de estas obras como resultado de la vida del artista y su contexto inmediato. / Through an analysis and contextualization of the works of Francisco "Pancho" Fierro will seek to discover the satirical, burlesque and jocular within these works to justify a deeper understanding of the artist's production. The main goal is to place the works of Fierro in a temporal and geographical space that assembles the conditions that will affect the content, technique and distribution of the works of art, mainly his watercolor drawings. The artist, having been attributed a classification of costumbrista, is categorized as a registrar of Lima's types and costumes that limit the interpretation of his body of artistic works to visual imitation.
