From Transcendental Subjective Vision to Political Idealism: Panoramas in Antebellum American Literature

Park, Joon 2012 August 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores the importance of the panorama for American Renaissance writers' participation in ideological formations in the antebellum period. I analyze how Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Wells Brown, Henry Box Brown, and Harriet Beecher Stowe use the panorama as a metaphorical site to contest their different positions on epistemological and sociopolitical agendas such as transcendentalism, masculinist expansionism, and radical abolitionism. Emerson uses the panorama as a key metaphor to underpin his transcendental idealism and situate it in contemporary debates on vision, gender, and race. Connecting the panorama with optical theories on light and color, Emerson appropriates them to theorize his transcendental optics and makes a hierarchical distinction between light/transparency/panorama as metaphors for spirit, masculinity, and race-neutral man versus color/opacity/myopic vision for body, femininity, and racial-colored skin. In his paean to the moving panorama, Thoreau expresses his desire for Emersonian correspondence between nature and the spirit through transcendental panoramic vision. However, Thoreau's esteem for nature's materiality causes his panoramic vision to be corporeal and empirical in its deviation from the decorporealized vision in Emerson?s notion of transparent eyeball. Hawthorne repudiates the Transcendentalists' and social reformers' totalizing and absolutist idealism through his critique of the panorama and the emphasis on opacity and ambiguity of the human mind and vision. Hawthorne reveals how the panorama satisfies the desire for visual and physical control over the rapidly expanding world and the fantasy of access to truth. Countering the dominant convention of the Mississippi panorama that objectifies slaves as a spectacle for romantic tourism, Box Brown and Wells Brown open up a new American subgenre of the moving panorama, the anti-slavery panorama. They reconstruct black masculinity by verbally and visually representing real-life stories of some male fugitive slaves and idealizing them as masculine heroes of the anti-slavery movement. In Uncle Tom's Cabin, Stowe criticizes how the favorable representation of slavery and the objectification of slaves in the Mississippi panorama and the picturesque help to construct her northern readers' uncompassionate and hard-hearted attitudes toward the cruel realities of slavery and presents Tom's sympathetic and humanized "eyes" as an alternative vision.

Projections on the future indicate that the current scenario of scarcity of freshwater resources may worsen and cause dramatic consequences for the mankind survival. Although it has the largest renewable source of freshwater in the world, Brazil presents high freshwater scarcity regions, like semi-arid and the metropolitan areas of major cities. This research aim to study about the global picture of the distribution and use of freshwater and to analyze the costs of the use of a system of seawater desalination by reverse osmosis powered by energy generated from photovoltaic panels, biodiesel stationary engine and power grids, in an organization with access to seawater of Guanabara Bay. Publications of United Nations and Brazil were analyzed about the conditions of freshwater resources and extensive literature to identify the models used to carry out the economic evaluation of reverse osmosis plants powered by electricity from renewable energy sources, solar and biodiesel, and the electrical power grid. The economic analysis, focused on cost survey, used a combination of nominal interest rates per annum 5%, 10% and 15%, with useful life of 10, 15 and 20 years. Freshwater production costs obtained ranged from BRL$ 6.22/m3 to BRL$ 7.71/m3 for the configuration with reverse osmosis desalination unit powered by energy from the electric power grid (Grid-RO), from BRL$ 12.47/m3 to BRL$ 25.67/m3 for the configuration with reverse osmosis desalination unit powered by electricity generated from the photovoltaic panels (PV-OR), and from BRL$ 16.79/m3 to BRL$ 18.51/m3 for the configuration with reverse osmosis desalination unit powered by electricity generated from the biodiesel stationary engine (Biodiesel-RO). The results showed competitive values and indicate that organizations with easy access to seawater and have high water demands, with also significant costs, should investigate the autonomous production of fresh water through desalination by reverse osmosis, combined with renewable energies, if available

MPEG Z/Alpha and high-resolution MPEG / MPEG Z/Alpha och högupplösande MPEG-video

Ziegler, Gernot January 2003 (has links)
The progression of technical development has yielded practicable camera systems for the acquisition of so called depth maps, images with depth information. Images and movies with depth information open the door for new types of applications in the area of computer graphics and vision. That implies that they will need to be processed in all increasing volumes. Increased depth image processing puts forth the demand for a standardized data format for the exchange of image data with depth information, both still and animated. Software to convert acquired depth data to such videoformats is highly necessary. This diploma thesis sheds light on many of the issues that come with this new task group. It spans from data acquisition over readily available software for the data encoding to possible future applications. Further, a software architecture fulfilling all of the mentioned demands is presented. The encoder is comprised of a collection of UNIX programs that generate MPEG Z/Alpha, an MPEG2 based video format. MPEG Z/Alpha contains beside MPEG2's standard data streams one extra data stream to store image depth information (and transparency). The decoder suite, called TexMPEG, is a C library for the in-memory decompression of MPEG Z/Alpha. Much effort has been put into video decoder parallelization, and TexMPEG is now capable of decoding multiple video streams, not only in parallel internally, but also with inherent frame synchronization between parallely decoded MPEG videos.

Dětská léčebna Ostrov u Macochy / Childern´s Sanatorium Ostrov u Macochy

Sochorová, Jana January 2020 (has links)
The topic of this master’s thesis was to make an architectural study of the Childern´s sanatorium with speleotheraphy in Ostrov u Macochy. The Sanatorium provides a professional care to the children and teenage with respiratory diseases, asthma but also skin diseases. The proposed building will primarily serve the needs of this sanatorium with the possibility of using some of its parts by the public. The area is located near the upper entrance to the Císařská jeskyně, which is now used for speleotherapy. The new building will be located on a sloping terrain near the surrounding development, which consists only of family houses. The ambition of the proposal was to use the orientation of the slope to the south, which offers a beautiful view of the town and at the same time sensitively set the building into the surrounding landscape of the Moravian Karst. The project itself consists of 4 main buildings that are interconnected by atrium in the middle. This atrium connects not only buildings, but also individual services, and thus acts as a kind of communication node.

Radnice Brno – Sever / New town hall for the district Brno-North

Filičková, Alžbeta January 2015 (has links)
The assignment of this thesis is to design a town hall building for the Brno – Sever city district. The particular building plot is located on the site of the former military quarters in Brno – Černá pole near the Botanic Gardens and Arboretum of Mendel University, where the landscape changes to downhill. The site features a good view of the surroundings and it is convenient for the public building because of its good accessibility. A significant item of this design was to give the town hall’s scheme an added value in a form of a community educational center for the use of the inhabitants of Brno. The center includes for instance a library branch, exhibition premises and a clubroom for moms and children or for pensioners. Thanks to these public premises the town hall can be lively even during the afternoon hours.

Sub-frame synchronisation and motion interpolation for panoramic video stitching / Synkronisering och Interpolering av Videodata för Panoramagenerering

Remì, Chierchia January 2022 (has links)
This study was carried out in collaboration with Tracab, a brand leader in real-time digital sports data. As a result, the application field is centred on sports analytics. The technology, for instance, consists of multiple cameras that capture a football pitch in a panoramic setup. The alignment of two or more cameras in both a spatial and temporal manner is referred to as sub-frame synchronisation. Because the cameras are already in the same geometric coordinates, only temporal synchronisation will be addressed in this project. The main method for retrieving the desynchronisation information that affects the cameras is based on optical flow. The off-sync cameras' spacial information is then synthesised to the time required by the synchronisation constraint using motion interpolation. In addition, the created system is compared to a real-time intermediate flow interpolation approach. The latter method relies on machine learning techniques, whereas this study focuses on more traditional methods. The metrics Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio and Structural Similarity Index Measure are used to address the quality criteria required by this subject of study. Furthermore, visually perceived quality is examined to identify differences between measured and perceived quality. The results reveal that in every realistic situation investigated, temporal synchronisation can be addressed by an error measure of less than 1ms. The frame synthesis stage, on the other hand, fails to accurately estimate complicated scenarios, while the machine learning approach stands out. The implemented approach, on the other hand, addresses fast-moving objects with greater precision. Furthermore, the machine learning approach is unable to interpolate intermediate frames in arbitrary time steps, which is critical for the project's application. Finally, considering the lack of real-time computational speed and the quality achieved by machine learning approaches, more research is required in these directions.
