Stiffness Analysis of Cable-Driven Parallel Robots

Moradi, Amir 27 April 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is the stiffness analysis of cable-driven parallel robots. Cable-driven parallel robots have drawn considerable attention because of their unique abilities and advantages such as the large workspace, light weight of cable actuators, easy disassembly and transportation of the robot. The mobile platform of a cable-driven parallel robot is attached to the base with multiple cables. One of the parameters that should be studied to make sure a robot is able to execute a task accurately is stiffness of the robot. In order to investigate the stiffness behaviour of a robot, the stiffness matrix can be calculated as the first step. Because cables act in tension, keeping the positive tension in cables becomes a challenge. In order to have a fully controllable robot, an actuation redundancy is needed. These complexities are addressed in the thesis and simulations. In this thesis, the complete form of the stiffness matrix is considered without neglecting any terms in calculation of the stiffness. Some stiffness indices such as single-dimensional stiffness based on stiffness ellipse, directional stiffness and condition number of the stiffness matrix are introduced and calculated and stiffness maps of the robot are developed. In addition, the issue of unit inconsistency in calculating the stiffness index is addressed. One of the areas which is also addressed in this thesis is failure analysis based on the stiffness of robot. The effect of the failure in one or more cables or motors is modelled and stiffness maps are developed for the failure situation. It is shown that by changing the anchor position and mobile platform orientation, the lost stiffness after failure of a cable or motor can be retrieved partially. Optimum anchor position and mobile platform orientation are identified to maximize the area of the stiffness map. Condition number of the stiffness matrix while robot is following a trajectory is optimized. In addition, when one cable fails during the path planning, the recovery of the robot is studied. Finally, these analyses on stiffness and failure provide the designer with the necessary and valuable information about the anchor positions and actuator toques. / Thesis (Ph.D, Mechanical and Materials Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2013-04-27 08:47:26.297

Mechanical characterization of a parallel manipulator robot with 3 degrees of freedom.

Rinaldi, Decio de Moura 14 May 2018 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the mechanical characterization of a parallel manipulator robot of 3 degrees of freedom. In order to advance in the field of control of trajectory of these robots it is necessary to characterize them mechanically, which will provide the subsidies for parametric identification, calibration of models, adjustment of gains of the controllers, etc. Specifically, the mechanical characterization in this work had as objective the experimental study of the positioning errors of the effector in relation to the accuracy and repeatability, its rigidity under the action of external loads, as well as the natural frequencies of the system. The tests were performed in the Laila robot, which is a physical prototype of a manipulator robot, developed by the Department of Mechatronics Engineering and Mechanical Systems of the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo. The dissertation presents as results the mappings of the positioning errors of the effector, the rigidity under the action of external loads, as well as their natural frequencies, along the measurement space. The following is a discussion of the consistency of the values obtained for these properties. Finally, an analysis is made on the influence of the mechanical gaps on the performance indexes of the robot.

This thesis has the purpose to study the precision of a new robotic structure for milling operations, in substitution to the conventional serial machine-tools, specialy the CNC milling machines and cutting centers. We developed one assymmetric robotic structure 2UPS+PRP, with the following characteristics: mobility 3 with three translations in the space, reduced number of componentes and displacement in z direction independent from the displacents in the x and y directions. We presented the computer algorithms to map the kinematic, geometric and elastic errors, throw the discretization of the available workspace, based on the Jacobian matrices and the virtual work principle. With regard to the tool position deviation mappings obtained, we reach to some conclusions. The major kinematic errors occurred when the imprecisions imposed to the two lateral actuatores had opposed signals. The geometric errors with dimensional tolerances in the IT5 work class, were the more relevant among the considered errors. The elastic errors, considering finishing manufacturing forces, were the less relevent among the considered errors, being expressive the influence of the rigidity of the universal and spherical jounts. The utilization of the virtual work principle and concentrated rigidity parameters, showed to be efficacious and efficient, compared to the SMA (astructural matrice analisis) and the FEM (finite elements methode), because of the minor work to develop its formulations end the reduced computer time to its prosecution.

Yang, Hai 10 May 2012 (has links)
Industrial robots, well known as flexible and agile manufacturing systems, reach their limits when dealing with very large workpieces (e.g.: very long and slender parts found in aeronautics industry). For such tasks, existing solutions are at their limits: stationary manipulator arms suffer from a too limited workspace; manipulators mounted on a vehicle are not accurate enough; classical machine-tools must be designed at mega-scale (several tens of meters). This thesis work aims at offering an innovative robotic solution that combines the ability to walk (or climb) on the workpiece (or on the tooling that supports the workpieces) together with manufacturing ability. From the topology and mobility analysis to the geometrics and kinematics modeling, as well as innovative control algorithms proposition, the proposed mobile manufacturing robots have been studied for achieving both machining and locomotion tasks. A prototype has been built to show the concept effectiveness . It is based on a parallel mechanism with actuation redundancy (8 motors for 6 degrees-of-freedom), combining motors, brakes, clamping devices and numerous position sensors. The robot can clamp itself on the manufacturing tooling, and then change its configuration to become a walking robot able to reach the next working area.

Almeida, Mateus Vagner Guedes de January 2018 (has links)
The 3-RPS mechanism is a parallel mechanism that has three degrees of freedom: roll, pitch and heave. It has a cost advantage compared to the Stewart Platform manipulator in applications where six degrees of freedom are not required and, because it is a parallel mechanism, has a higher weight / load ratio than serial robots. In the present work, a study is carried out for the design of a 3-RPS robot. The study addresses the kinematics, dynamics and control strategy for the robot. A computed torque control is applied to a 1:1 scale virtual CAD model developed with the purpose of testing the control strategy elaborated from the computational simulations of the entire system. Seven simulations were performed for different conditions of desired trajectories. In Case I, an idealized system was first run where the regime error tended to zero for an underdamped behavior. The calculated gains in Case I idealized were then applied in Case I with the virtual model where it was verified that the calculated gains were not enough to guarantee the desired trajectory of the robot. With gains increased by one hundred times, it was found that the regime error was 0.22 mm, and the value was considered acceptable. In the subsequent simulations, the regime error in Cases II and III were also 0.22 mm and in Cases IV, V, VI and VII the maximum error of trajectory did not exceed the stipulated 0.22 mm.

Explicit determination of the driving torques of a planar parallel robot by using Kane\'s method.

Finotti, Gilson 28 April 2008 (has links)
For over a decade parallel robots have attracted the interest from academic and industrial communities due to their potential advantages over the predominant serial architecture. Among these advantages are the lighter weight and higher speeds, accelerations, and load capacity. The most promising industrial application for these alternative architectures are the pick-and-place operations, which are needed in food, pharmaceutical and electronics industries. We show here a parallel robot designed to perform pick-and-place operations in two dimensions , i.e., on a plane. The main goal is the dynamical analysis of this mechanism by means of the Kane method. We determine the torques of the actuators and the reaction forces caused by the dynamical effects of its movement, when its end-effector is subject to external load. The cases of uniform and accelerated movements, with either straight or circular trajectory, are considered. Therefore, in this dissertation we present the kinematics analysis of the robot, an analysis of possible end-effector trajectories, the workspace development, and the corresponding dynamical analysis. A few simulations are also included to better describe its properties.

Análise numérica e experimental da influência da redundância cinemática em um manipulador paralelo planar / Numerical and experimental investigation of the influences of the kinematic redundancy on the performance of a kinematically redundant parallel planar manipulator

Santos, João Cavalcanti 03 July 2017 (has links)
As a consequence of their reduced inertia, parallel manipulators present superior energetic efficiency and they are able to reach high accelerations. Nevertheless, their workspace has a poorly uniform performance. Indeed, the presence of parallel singularities is a strong limitant for this kind of robots. On the one hand, actuation redundancy is well-known as a good choice in an effort to solve this issue. On the other hand, kinematic redundancy still have unclear consequences on this matter. A kinematically redundant manipulator presents an end-effector with fewer degrees of freedom than the mechanism as a whole. Considering this gap, the objective of this research is to analyze the influence of kinematic redundancy on the performance of parallel manipulators through simulations and experimental tests. This issue turns out to be complex, once traveling actuators sum additional inertia to the system. Metrics are defined in order to evaluate how favourable is a given position, and redundancy resolution strategies are analyzed using them. The main proposed strategy is composed of two steps. In the first one, a movement is defined so that the position for each instant is optimum for a given multiobjective performance metric. This procedure delivers a refererence movement which generally presents high accelerations. On the second step, a global optimization is applied, seeking for a trade-off between the proximity to the reference and the acceleration levels. In addition, several local methods (which resolve the inverse kinematics for each instant independently) and one truncated global strategy were addressed. These configurations were compared numerically and experimentally, delivering a objective analysis of the influence of kinematic redundancy on the performance of the parallel manipulator. The experimental campaign was executed with a physical prototype built at the São Carlos School of Engineering. This is a planar manipulator with 6 degrees of freedom, consequently presenting up to 3 degrees of redundancy. The mechanism is actuated by 6 rotating motors, of which 3 are coupled to leadscrews, resulting in linear actuators. These leadscrews can be locked, defining different degrees of redundancy and granting the versatility of the prototype.

Conception, optimisation et commande d'un stablisateur actif pour la compensation des vibrations des robots parallèles à câbles / Design, optimisation and control of an active stabilizer for cable-driven parallel robot vibration damping

Lesellier, Maximilien 27 February 2019 (has links)
In this thesis, an active stabilizer is designed to be embedded on the platform of a Cable-Driven Parallel Robot (CDPR) and to damp vibrations affecting the platform by producing a wrench on it.First, a mechanical modeling of various active stabilization devices allows the choice of an appropriate solution for vibration damping. The selected solution consists of a stabilizer composed of rotating arms. Then, this model is used to optimize the stabilizer structure by looking at which arm arrangement maximizes the power delivered by the stabilizer to the CDPR mobile platform.A control strategy is then proposed for the system consisting of the CDPR mobile platform and the embedded active stabilizer. As this system consists of two parts operating at different time scales, the singular perturbation theory is used to prove the stability of the proposed control. Finally, simulation experiments make it possible to validate the use of an on-board active stabilizer to damp the vibrations of the mobile platform of a CDPR, and controlled with the control law proposed in this thesis.
