Bending Educational Reality

Virtual reality (VR), an emergent technology, affords experiential content delivery in education by evoking emotive responses in users, which can be prohibitive via traditional media. This thesis explores VR for the development of grit – passion and perseverance, which are essential characteristics in education and long-term success. The research proposes design strategies to stimulate senses for emotional engagement and a physiological response. In the project, two interactive environments position the user in emotional states to build passion and perseverance. To develop passion, the virtual world is designed to engage in creativity using 3D-spatial audio and visual effects. In contrast, to build perseverance users are exposed to a challenging environment that requires them to overcome and positively associate frustration with growth. This thesis demonstrates the potential of design for higher sense-stimulation applied through VR in education.

Family Business Daughters: The Ties that Bind and Divide

The purpose of this study is to explore the relational contradictions experienced by family business daughters, and to investigate how they responded to these tensions. For this project, I interviewed twelve second and third generation family business daughters from eleven different family businesses. I utilized research procedures similar to grounded theory to analyze my interview transcripts. I examined relational tensions at both a personal level and an organizational level involving the larger work-family system. At a personal level, the connection/separation contradiction is significant to family business daughters and to their relationships with work and family. Many family business daughters helped at the family business because it was a means of emotional connection to family members who work there. Some family business daughters went so far as sacrificing their personal goals for family business goals. At an organizational level, one advantage of working at a family business was the flexibility it provided family business daughters to respond to family emergencies. Yet ironically, family business daughters were not granted the same accommodations for schedule demands associated with childcare. Family business daughters who were mothers often felt as if they could not be good mothers and productive workers. I explored the gendered basis of these different tensions, particularly as they arise from the ideology of separate spheres and patriarchal assumptions concerning the public-private divide and the assumed separation of family and work. I argue family business daughters have inherited a phenomenal work ethic that makes them successful business women yet they have also inherited the legacy of the founder's sexist attitudes toward motherhood and work. These sexist attitudes live in the organizational culture, and family business mothers adopt a separate spheres discourse in which they must choose between their work and their family. They address these relational tensions through the strategy of balancing family and work; however, this places family business daughters in a position where they feel as if they have to sacrifice in both the areas. I contend the family business should treat its members as "whole beings" by merging family into work.

Bad Conscience: Nietzsche and Responsibility in Modernity

Nietzsche is a name not often invoked in relation to the topic of responsibility. This study reveals, however, that his work engages vigorously with the problem of responsibility in modernity on both the conceptual and methodological levels. In the concept of &quote; bad conscience,&quote; Nietzsche presents a " dangerous and multi-coloured " alternative to the more monochrome varieties of self-consciousness which ground theories of individual responsibility in the work of other modern philosophers, such as Locke and Kant. The complexity of Nietzsche's approach to self-consciousness allows him to shed light on the range of interconnected practices of responsibility and irresponsibility that characterize modern life. It also raises pressing questions about the possibility and conditions of philosophy in modernity. In grappling with " bad conscience" within the performative structures of his own thought, Nietzsche makes experimental use of methodological resources drawn from both the ancient and modern traditions of Western philosophy. In particular, this study examines Nietzsche's appropriation and " reinterpretation" of meditational methods which form part of the ancient philosophical " art of living," and which re-emerge in altered form, in the work of Descartes. In Nietzsche's writings, such methods are used to provoke and reflect upon the passions of " bad conscience," a dangerous practice which involves the risk of exacerbating this " illness," but which also promises to give birth to new insight and skill in confronting the problem of responsibility in modernity.

The Thirteenth-Century Fresco Decoration of Santa Maria Ad Cryptas in Fossa, Italy

This paper discusses the fresco decoration of Santa Maria ad Cryptas. The frescoes are described and analyzed, and then compared to similar programs in order to determine which features are based on earlier sources, and which are unusual or unique to this particular church. The traditional features are found to reflect a long-established pattern of church decoration reflected in such monuments as Old Saint Peter’s, Sant’Angelo in Formis, the Cathedral of Monreale, and the Cappella Palatina. The unusual features (including the placement of the Passion cycle in the presbytery, and the location of the Crucifixion over the altar) are explained as modifications that emphasize themes of local importance, or of special significance to the patron. The Fossa frescoes utilize programmatic elements, such as the Old and New Testament narrative cycles, to explain sacred history as it related to a medieval man of the patron’s class and profession.

En este trabajo investigamos las funciones de la intertextualidad en la novela La Isla de la Pasión de Laura Restrepo. Concentrándonos en citas y alusiones que refieren a Don Quijote de Cervantes, Robinson Crusoe de Defoe y la Biblia, y tomando en cuenta el contexto en el que aparecen, analizamos las funciones que estas referencias intertextuales cumplen en el nivel del relato en la novela de Restrepo. Constatamos que la intertextualidad entre La Isla de la Pasión y Don Quijote aparece como una cita en forma de epígrafe mientras que las referencias intertextuales a Robinson Crusoe y la Biblia son alusiones. Vemos que la intertextualidad en la novela de Restrepo funciona como presagio, contribuye a crear ironía y describe los acontecimientos y los personajes, a veces en forma de símiles y metáforas. También concluimos que no hay ninguna relación entre el tipo de obra a la que se refieren las referencias intertextuales y la función que estas cumplen en la novela, aunque las alusiones bíblicas tienen una tendencia a ser símiles. / This essay is an investigation of the functions of the intertextuality in Laura Restrepo’s novel Isle of Passion. The quotations and allusions that refer to Cervantes’ Don Quixote, Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and the Bible are examined and the context in which these intertextual references appear is taken into account when analyzing the functions they fulfil in the story of the novel. The conclusion reached is that a quotation in the form of an epigraph constitutes the intertextuality between Isle of Passion and Don Quixote and that the intertextual references to Robinson Crusoe and the Bible appear as allusions. Furthermore, the functions of the intertextuality in Isle of Passion are to provide foreshadowing, to create irony and to describe events and characters, sometimes in the shape of similes and metaphors. Finally, the essay states that in the novel the functions of the intertextual references do not vary according to the type of work that the intertextuality refers to, although the biblical allusions tend to be similes.

In this study, it is defined to treat the sources of work passion as independent variables and to treat organizational commitments as dependent variables. Based on the test samples of high-tech research and development engineers, it is intended to figure out the relationship between all variables and how they affect eath other. Futhermore, using person-organization fit and person-job fit as interference variables to study the interference among all variables. Totally 1,035 questionnaires are issued and get 642 valid copies returned. By using reliability analysis, factor analysis, on-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, multiple linear regression and hierarchical regression to analyze questionnaire data, the result is summarized as follows, 1.A positive relationship between the sources of work passion and organizational commitments. 2.The sources of work passion and organizational commitments differ significantly depending on personal attributes. 3.Person-organization fit and person-job fit interfere the relationship between the sources of work passion and organizational commitments.

The Impacts of Person-Organization Fit and Person-Job Fit on Work Attitude-The Case of Taiwan Power Company

In recent years there has been growing interest in the concept of Person-Environment¡]P-E¡^Fit. Under the umbrella term of P-E fit, researchers have distinguished between specific types of fit¡GPerson-Organization¡]P-O¡^Fit and Person-Job¡]P-J¡^Fit . This study examines the employees¡¦ actual P-O fit and perceived P-J fit, and both types of fit as predictors of work passion, job satisfaction and turnover intention. The Q-sort approaches and the Organizational Culture Profile¡]OCP¡^adapted from Cable and Judge¡]1996¡^were used as the instrument for assessing Person-Organization fit. Furthermore, this paper examines the potential interaction between the P-O fit and the P-J fit. If such an interaction is significant , both types of fit can be a moderator for each other. Survey data collected from 277 employees of Taiwan Power Company are analyzed. The results show that: ¡]1¡^the person-organization fit calculated by correlating OCP1¡]characteristics of firms¡^ and OCP2¡]individual preferences for the characteristics of firms¡^ ranged from ¡V1 to 1¡]the¡©correlation coefficient¡ªis between -1 and 1 as expected¡^. ¡]2¡^Both P-O fit and P-J fit have positive impact on work passion and job satisfaction, respectively.¡]3¡^Both P-O fit and P-J fit have negative impact on turnover intention.¡]4¡^No significant interaction was found between the two types of fit and they are weakly related¡]r=.043¡^

THE IMITATION OF ROMAN CATHOLIC AND BYZANTINE CHANT IN ĒRIKS EŠENVALDS’S PASSION AND RESURRECTION

Ēriks Ešenvalds is an early twenty-first century composer who has been commissioned to write works for some of the most noteworthy ensembles in the world. Having written over 100 compositions to date, 72 of which are choral pieces, Ešenvalds is quickly becoming one of the most prolific and significant composers of his time. He currently works as a full-time composer out of Riga, Latvia. Ešenvalds’s choral works are primarily unaccompanied, while some include brass band, saxophone quartet, percussion, or orchestral accompaniment. Textures vary from three to twelve voice parts. His oratorio Passion and Resurrection (2005), written for soprano solo, SATB quartet, SATB chorus, SS soli, and strings, is an amalgamation of compositional techniques drawn from all eras of music history. This project identifies characteristics of Roman Catholic and Byzantine chant that are imitated throughout Passion and Resurrection. A succinct history of both styles is presented along with a detailing of Ešenvalds’s compositional technique and an overview of his oratorio. Aspects of form, melody, text, rhythm, harmony, and texture present in each movement are also discussed. This study provides conductors with insight into the chant-like aspects of Ešenvalds’s work and any influences on performance. Listings of notable Passion settings and Ešenvalds’s choral output are also included.
