Storing and accessing sensitive data has become an important task in today’s society. Many different services require login credentials for users to remember in order to authenticate themselves. A common habit is to use the same password for several services. This is considered a security risk since if someone uncovers the user’s password they will gain access to all of the different accounts using the same password. Hence users are encouraged to use different login credentials for different services, resulting in an increasingly large list of sensitive data the user needs to remember. KeySafe provides a password storage service which makes all your digital keys available with the use of physical one. In this project, a platform independent service has been created with an Android application which implements external authentication using NFC tags. Using Google App Engine with the Endpoints API backend the service becomes available to a range of different devices such as iPhone, PC, Tablet or Mac. This resulted in a flexible, secure system that makes it an easy task to use strong and independent passwords for different login-services. All data stored by the application is encrypted using the AES encryption cipher and the AES key needed for decryption is stored on the external NFC tag.

Password Management Systems är system som hjälper användaren skapa kontroll över sinaanvändarkonton och lösenord. Denna studie analyserar tre utvalda system, hur användarvänliga de är samtvilken typ av autentisering och kryptering de använder. Metoden som används är experiment tillsammansmed intervjuer av fem deltagare, varav alla hade olika erfarenheter med datorer. Studien har visat attanvändarvänligheten bland flerparten av systemen är höga. Risker finns bland upprepade lösenord ochanvändarnamn, samt osäker autentisering. Denna studie visar att Password Managment Systems kanenkelt hjälpa användare att skapa och använda säkra lösenord. Framtida arbeten finns att titta närmare påsäkerheten bland Password Management Systems, en fallstudie i organisationer samt titta närmare påsvenska system.

Effective password management is crucial for safeguarding online accounts and sensitive information. This research examines the current challenges and provides alternative solutions for better password management. This study encompasses a comprehensive survey and interviews conducted with individuals across various professional backgrounds. A total of 137 online users participated in the survey, which spanned over a duration of 15 days. Additionally, four individuals were interviewed to gather more indepth data. The study aimed to understand password selection behaviors and the factors influencing them. The goal is to develop practical strategies to enhance password security and mitigate unauthorized access to sensitive information. The purpose of the study is to provide valuable insights into the complexities of password management and contribute to the development of informed approaches for stronger password security. The study emphasizes the significance of password management and highlights the importance of educating users about the risks associated with weak passwords. The findings have implications not only for the research community but also for individuals and organizations seeking to understand user behavior and attitudes towards password systems. By gaining a deeper understanding of these aspects, it becomes possible to design more effective strategies to protect online accounts and sensitive data.

Lösenord är idag den mest tillämpade metod som används vid verifiering av användare. Metoden är både enkel och kostnadseffektiv vilket verkar vara två faktorer som gjort denna verifieringsmetod populär. Men precis som många andra tillvägagångssätt har även denna sina brister. Ett stort problem med lösenordsverifiering är när människor på egen hand hanterar sina lösenord. Människor tenderar att skapa svaga lösenord och på grund av minnesbegränsningar är det många personer som återanvänder lösenord på flera konton. Minnet begränsar oss människor att komma ihåg flera olika lösenord. Detsamma gäller lösenord som är starka, det vill säga långa och slumpartade teckenkombinationer. Ett tillvägagångssätt för att hantera detta är användandet av lösenordshanterare. En tjänst som bland annat kan vara appbaserad eller webbläsarbaserad. Men trots mängden och variationen av lösenordshanterare har nyttjandet för denna lösning varit låg. För att ta reda på vad detta kan bero på har denna studie gjort en undersökning för att identifiera faktorer som påverkar användningen av lösenordshanterare både positivt respektive negativt. Undersökningen gjordes på 110 respondenter som via en enkät fick ange svar hur deras användning av lösenordshanterare ser ut och varför den ser ut som den gör. / Passwords are the most used method when it comes to verifying users. This method is both easy and cost effective which seems to be two factors that have made it so popular. But, just like many other verification methods, it has its flaws. A big problem is when people are left to their own when creating and sustaining passwords. People tend to create weak passwords as well as reuse them for different accounts. This, in order to save time and memory. Memory constraints prevent people from remembering several unique passwords as well as strong passwords, i.e randomized and long combinations of characters. One way to handle this problem is by using Password Managers. A password manager is a tool that helps the user manage passwords. This tool comes in variations and can be used as an independent app or as a plug-in for browsers. But despite this, the adoption rate continues to be low. To help figure out why, this study has conducted a literature search as well as a survey involving 110 people. Through this survey, answers could be categorized into factors that could influence the reasoning behind the usage and non-usage of password managers.

Lösenord är en viktig del av informationssäkerhet och fungerar som primär autentiseringsmetod för att skydda användarkonton.  Syftet med denna studie är att ta reda på hur väl en verksamhets anställda följer verksamhetens lösenordspolicy och undersöka om lösenordshanteringen sker på ett accepterat och godkänt sätt utifrån ett säkerhetsperspektiv i enlighet med ISO-standarder. Metoden har bestått av en enkätundersökning och intervjuundersökning vars resultat jämförts med relevanta riktlinjer från ISO-standarder och verksamhetens lösenordspolicy, en riskanalys och utvecklandet av ett verktyg för att memorera lösenord. Resultat visade brister på säker lösenordshantering bland verksamhetens anställda. Genom analysen har en rad åtgärder framtagits för att upprätta, återställa och förbättra lösenordshanteringen samt förebyggande åtgärder för den lösenordshantering som redan är godkänd. De slutsatser som dragits utifrån denna studie är att det finns ett behov för förbättring av lösenordshanteringen och utifrån behovet har förslag på både åtgärder och förebyggande åtgärder tagits fram. / Passwords are an important part of information security and works as a primary authentication method to protect user accounts. The purpose of this study is to investigate how an organisation’s employees follow the password policy and investigate if the password management is executed in an acceptable fashion from a security perspective and according to ISO standards. The method consisted of a survey, interviews of which the results has been compared to ISO standards guidelines and the organisation’s password policy, a risk analysis and a development of a tool to memorize passwords. The result showed insufficiency in the password management of the employees. Thru the analysis several actions have been found to constitute, restore and improve the password management and also preventing actions to keep the password management that is already sufficient. The conclusions are that there is a need for improvement of the password management and from these needs proposals for actions have been extracted.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att ta reda på hur svenska sjukhus efter lever de riktlinjer som finns om lösenordshantering. För att ta reda på detta har riktlinjer och forskning samlats in om området som har jämförts med vårdpersonals svar om efterlevnad som skickats ut. Områden som behandlades var delning, sparande, byten och styrka av lösenord samt om de anställda blev informerade om riktlinjer gällande lösenordshantering på arbetsplatsen. Efter analys av resultatet nåddes slutsatsen att lösenordshantering efterlevandes olika bra beroende på vilket område det gällde. Lösenordens styrka var generellt bra och de byttes ofta, men informerande av de anställde, sparande och delning av lösenord skedde inte enligt de riktlinjer som finns. / The purpose of this essay is to find out whether or not Swedish hospitals follow the available guidelines regarding password management. To find out the answer guidelines and previous studies were collected and compared to answers about following password guidelines made by employees at participating hospitals. Areas that were covered were, sharing, saving, changing and strength of passwords and if the employees had been informed about the guidelines regarding password management at the workplace. After analysis of the result the conclusion was made that whether or not the hospitals followed the guidelines depended on the covered area. The strength of the passwords were generally good and they were changed often, but informing the employees about guidelines, saving and sharing of passwords did not follow the guidelines.

This study aimed primarily at investigating if the role of age was important regarding password management and password habits of different users. Despite extensive research in password management, the problem remains that users create insecure passwords, leaving personal information and systems vulnerable to attackers. In order to examine users’ different password habits in different age categories, a multi-strategy study was conducted, which consisted of two methods, with both a questionnaire and interviews. The areas discussed in the study were whether the age was important on the user's password habits and the knowledge different users had about attacker's different methods. The study also discusses how the user thought about the creation of passwords in comparison with recommendations from existing studies of how a secure password is created and how the user remembered their password. The results of the surveys show no correlation between the user's age and password habits. However, a possible solution to the problem is finally discussed, as both previous studies and this study proves users today lack knowledge of secure passwords and lack of password habits.

Kunskap om lösenord och deras säkerhet är idag något som förbises av den gemene datoranvändaren. Lösenordshanterare kan både hjälpa och skydda vid hanteringen av lösenord. De flesta webbläsare idag har inbyggda funktioner för lösenordshantering. Utifrån existerande litteratur kunde det identifieras att det behövs data kring vilka faktorer som påverkar webbläsares användare att använda respektive inte använda dessa inbyggda lösenordshanterare. Syftet med rapporten är att presentera en analys av faktorer som påverkar varför privatpersoner väljer att använda respektive inte använda webbläsares inbyggda lösenordshanterare. Resultatet presenteras med hjälp av kvalitativa semi-strukturerade intervjuer där 33 respondenter deltagit och besvarat frågor kring deras hantering av lösenord och användning av webbläsares inbyggda lösenordshanterare. Resultat från intervjuer visade att faktorer som var av betydande roll för ickeanvändande respondenter var starkt kopplade till datorvana och hur ofta respondenter använde datorn. De faktorer som spelade störst roll för användare av verktyget var enkelhet och tidseffektivitet. Icke-användare tenderade att ha en behovsbrist gällande verktyget, mestadels på grund av deras avsaknad av datoranvändning. Faktorer som påverkar användare och icke-användare visade sig stämma överens med tidigare forskning. Dessutom sammanfattades att antalet respondenter som var användare av lösenordshanterare var betydligt högre än vad som tidigare hävdats i litteratur. Majoriteten av respondenterna (79%) var användare av lösenordshanterare, vilket motsäger tidigare studier som utförts där endast 23% använder sig av lösenordshanterare. / Knowledge of passwords and their security is today something that is overlooked by the everyday computer user. Password managers can both help and protect when managing passwords. Most web browsers today have built-in password management features. Based on existing literature, it could be identified that there is a need for knowledge concerning which factors influence web browser users to use or not use their built-in password managers. The purpose of the report is to present an analysis of factors that affect why private individuals choose to use or not use browsers built-in password managers. The results are presented with the help of qualitative semi-structured interviews in which 33 respondents participated and answered questions about their handling of passwords and the use of web browsers built-in password managers. Results from the interviews showed that factors that were significant for non-user respondents were strongly linked to computer skills and how often respondents used the computer. The factors that played the biggest role for users of the tool were simplicity and time efficiency. Non-users tended to have a lack of need for the tool, mostly because of their lack of computer usage. Factors affecting users and non-users were found to be consistent with previous research. In addition, it was concluded that the number of respondents who were users of password managers was significantly higher than previously claimed in the literature. The majority of respondents (79%) were users of password managers, which contradicts previous studies conducted where only 23% use password managers.

The method an individual uses to handle their passwords is an important measure to be able to protect their sensitive information from data intrusion. The amount of passwords a person uses is increasing rapidly, this leads to the individual having problems with remembering all of them. Using a password manager that stores all passwords, as well as creating unique strong passwords for different websites is a common solution for this problem.  This study aims to deepen the understanding of the individual's password management. Apple’s own password manager iCloud Keychain has been used as the platform of study. This study aims to seek answers on how secure the common user feels towards iCloud Keychain, as well as user experience point of views. How user friendly is the program and what challenges do users experience?  The study is primarily based on a questionnaire, which forms the basis for in-depth interviews with both a selected focus group as well as an expert interview.  The results show divided opinions about the level of security the users feel towards iCloud Keychain, and where connections can be seen based on users previous knowledge in the field. The conclusion includes that iCloud Keychain is quite a strong candidate on the market for password management but it has some issues when it comes to the overall user experience. Areas for development to create an even stronger candidate include amongst others, opening for use on a wider number of platforms, that is; unlocking the program from Apple's ecosystem. / Individens hantering av sina lösenord är en viktig åtgärd för att kunna skydda sin känsliga information från dataintrång. I dagsläget använder människor sig av ett större antal lösenord, vilket gör det svårare att komma ihåg dem. Att använda sig av en lösenordshanterare som samlar alla lösenord, samt även skapar unika lösenord för varje hemsida gör det säkrare för individen.  I denna studie fördjupas förståelsen för individens hantering av lösenord och dess användning av just Apples egna lösenordshanteringsprogram iCloud Nyckelring. Frågor kring användarens känsla av säkerhet gentemot programmet undersöks. Även användarvänligheten och utmaningar med användandet är några av huvudsakerna som undersöks.  Studien bygger framförallt på en enkät, som lägger grunden till en fördjupad intervju med en fokusgrupp samt en expertintervju.  Resultaten påvisar delade meningar kring säkerheten med iCloud Nyckelring, där samband kan dras utifrån om användaren har tidigare kunskap inom området eller inte. Slutsatsen inkluderar att iCloud Nyckelring är en ganska stark kandidat på marknaden för lösenordshantering, men den har vissa problem när det kommer till den övergripande användarupplevelsen. Utvecklingsområden för att skapa en ännu starkare kandidat är till exempel att öppna för användning på ett större antal plattformar, det vill säga; låsa upp programmet från Apples ekosystem.
