Avaliação da aderência pneu-pavimento e tendências de desempenho para a rodovia BR-290/RS / Evaluation and modeling of tire-road friction in brazilian federal road BR-290/RS

Mattos, João Rodrigo Guerreiro January 2009 (has links)
Tire-road friction is one of the most important parameters regarding the safety of vehicles under slippery road conditions. Road surface texture is currently evaluated using several devices. In Brazil, the British Pendulum and the sand-patch method are most frequently used to measure microtexture and macrotexture, respectively. They were used in the research reported in this dissertation that aimed at verifying texture evolution with time/traffic on different types of pavement wearing courses. Thus, micro and macrotexture values were monthly measured in surveys carried out during one year in Brazilian Federal Road BR- 290/RS. Collected data allowed defining performance trends regarding micro and macrotexture of asphalt and Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements. The models here proposed might be used as auxiliary tools in Pavement Management Systems (PMS) to estimate the time when a given rehabilitation action is necessary to assure vehicle and drivers safety. Results analysis showed that the surveyed pavements present adequate tire-road friction, when evaluated by the International Friction Index (IFI) which combines pavements macro and microtexture. In addition, a model relating results of the sand-patch method to drainability results is proposed. Such model allows the estimation of the IFI based on values of water inflow through the pavements wearing courses.

Vitorello, Thiago January 2008 (has links)
Pavement performance prediction models are important tools for pavement management systems. Despite its high importance, specifically in Brazil, little attention has been given to calibration and validation of such models. Generic models are eventually used, even international ones, obtained for rather different conditions of those valid for the managed network. Hence, it is vital for an appropriate road pavement management that representative models of the structural and functional conditions of the associated pavements are defined. This research aims to evaluate the behaviour of the performance of a flexible pavement section of the road BR-290/RS, developing from this assessment, models that are representative of the pavement behaviour tendency. The road BR-290/RS is located between the cities of Osório and Porto Alegre, under concession of Concessionária da Rodovia Osório - Porto Alegre S/A - Concepa, since the year of 1997. One of the main actions to be accomplished by the road concessionary within the period under its administration is the carriageway widening of this road with the construction of a new pavement structure alongside, being this structure the objective of study in this research. The structure consists of an asphaltic layer of 8cm, 15cm of base course, 30cm of sub-base and 60cm of a capping layer. The pavement segments included in the analysis were built between 2000 and 2007. To deliver the objectives of this research, data obtained in deflectometric test campaigns, longitudinal roughness and rutting testing campaigns were gathered. Deflections were assessed in the FWD test campaign of 2007. Longitudinal roughness and rutting were simultaneously obtained with a laser profilometer in tests carried out in the years of 2005, 2006 and 2007. With this data, the behaviour of these parameters were evaluated with the traffic evolution, allowing the development of behaviour tendencies of this structure performance to be derived. In the analysis, the influence of the interventions carried out in the pavement sections after its construction were taken into account, as well as different procedures adopted in the testing campaigns carried out. In regard to the interventions, it was observed that, for the data and structure object of this study, they only had effect in the longitudinal roughness evolution. Statistical analyses were carried out in order to define the best adjustment to each parameter. After the development of such tendencies on the pavement behaviour, they were compared to pavement performance prediction models developed in other researches. For both roughness and rutting, the tendencies presented in the study behaved significantly as the other models found in the technical literature. As to the tendencies regarding deflections, none of the models developed in previous studies evidenced similar behaviour to the one observed in this research, testifying the importance for the development of particular models for each road and structure.

Carlos Andre Melo Pontes 31 January 2012 (has links)
Due to the large predominance of the transportation by highways in Brazil, it is necessary to control the actions related to maintenance and conservation of the roads. With this purpose, institutions make use of modern computational systems, such as the DER/CE, which uses the ISMA (Integrated System of Maintenance Administration). The referred system, using the subsystem PMS (Pavement Management System), has a large database related to the roads condition, filled with data provided by surveys that bring periodically up to date information of the state roads. These data are acquired by using methodologies defined by the technical staff of the DER/CE, based on the following normalized procedures: Visual Continuous Survey (LVC) and International Roughness Index Survey (IRI). The first one evaluates the comfort of the traffic rolling and the second registers the surface distresses of the roads. This research presents a comparative analysis between LVC and IRI data, evaluating the evolution of the distresses and the methodologies and equipments involved in the procedures. It is expected that, with the contribution of this research, the methodologies and road related data be analyzed considering the limitations of the equipments and procedures.

Procedimento para análise de sensibilidade do Programa HDM-4 / Procedure for sensitivity analysis of the HDM-4 software

Diego Frinhani Nunes 13 April 2012 (has links)
This Master of Science Dissertation aimed to outline a procedure for sensitivity analysis that can be widely used by computer program of pavement management HDM-4 users. It also aimed to analyze the influence of changes in the pre-defined scenario of the case study, especially design and traffic considerations. The choice of the Elementary Effects Method was preceded by a literature review on sensitivity analysis, and the procedure was outlined with a case study that came from a pre-defined scenario (two lane standard and asphalt pavement on granular base) and variations of 61 factors, considering 300 trajectories, in a total of 18,600 simulations in HDM-4 program. The results indicated that the use of a sample with 30 trajectories is appropriate, because increasing this number does not cause significant gains and reducing it can harm the analysis. With the procedure outlined, it was checked if changes in factors that are not in the group of 61 studied factors can interfere with the end result. Thus, changes in design (Discount Rate and Period Annual Monetary Analysis) and traffic (Percentage of Commercial Vehicle and Annual Growth Rate of Traffic) considerations affected the final result the sensitivity analysis, and the changes in traffic considerations were more influential than changes in design considerations. In addition, it was conducted a sensitivity analysis by the Elementary Effects Method, with 250 trajectories, which identified as the three most influential factors in the economic analysis of HDM-4 program, within the universe studied, the Annual Average Daily Traffic of Automobiles, the Calibration Factor for the Progression of Longitudinal Roughness and the Calibration Factor for the Ratio of Adjusted Structural Number Wet and Dry Seasons.

The applicability of published pavement deterioration models for national roads

Kannemeyer, Louw January 1993 (has links)
The growing interest in pavement management systems (PMSs), both in South Mrica and internationally, has been in response to a shift in importance from the construction of new roads to the maintenance of the existing paved network coupled with increasingly restrictive road funding. In order to develop a balanced expenditure programme for the national roads of South Africa there is a need to predict the rate of deterioration of a pavement and the nature of the changes in its condition so that the timing, type and cost of maintenance needs could be estimated. Internationally these expected changes in pavement condition are predicted by pavement deterioration models, which normally are algorithms developed mathematically or from a study of pavement deterioration. Since no usable pavement deterioration models existed locally, it was necessary to evaluate overseas literature on pavement deterioration prediction models with the aim of identifying models possibly applicable to the national roads of South Africa. Only deterioration models developed from the deterioration results of inservice pavements under a normal traffic spectrum were evaluated. Models developed from accelerated testing were avoided since these models virtually eliminated long·term effects (these are primarily environmental but also include effects of the rest periods between loads), and that the unrepresentative traffic loading regimes can distort the behaviour of the pavement materials, which is often stress dependent. Models developed from the following studies were evaluated: • AASHO Road Test • The Kenya study • Brazil-UNDP study (HDM-ill models) • Texas study Of all the above models studied that were developed from major studies it was concluded that the incremental models developed during the Brazil study, were the most appropriate for further evaluation under South African conditions. A sensitivity analysis was conducted on the HDM-III models to evaluate their sensitivity to changes in the different parameters comprising each model. The results obtained from the sensitivity analysis indicate that the incremental roughness prediction model incorporated into the HDM-III model tends to be insensitive to changes in most parameters. Accuracy ranges for input data were, however, also identified for parameters which indicated an increase in sensitivity in certain ranges. The local applicability of the HDM-III deterioration models were finally evaluated by comparing HDM-III model predictions with the actually observed deterioration values of a selected number of national road pavement sections. To enable the above comparison, a validation procedure had to be developed according to which the format of existing data could be transformed to that required by the HDM-ill model, as well as additional information be calculated. From the comparison it was concluded that the HDM-III models are capable of accurately predicting the observed deterioration on South African national roads, but that for most models calibration is needed for local conditions. Guidelines regarding recommended calibration factor ranges for the different HDM-ill models are given. Finally it is recommended that the HDM-III models should be considered for incorporation into a balanced expenditure programme for the national roads of South Africa. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 1993. / gm2014 / Civil Engineering / MEng / Unrestricted

DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIALINTELLIGENCE, ROBOTICS AND VIRTUAL REALITY FOR ENHANCED CONDITION ASSESSMENT OFINFRASTRUCTURE IN SMART CITIES

Yu Ting Huang (17469036) 29 November 2023 (has links)

The roads in the US received a "D" grade on the 2021 report card for America's infrastructure by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Poor road conditions generally translate into traffic accidents and vehicle damage, which result in additional expenses for drivers in terms of vehicle repairs and operating costs. To maintain a satisfactory pavement condition over an extended period of time, frequent inspections should be conducted, and any existing and imminent defects should be promptly addressed through corrective and preventive maintenance. However, the current practices are hindered by issues of inspectors' subjectivity, delayed responsiveness, and high costs. This study aims to develop innovative solutions that harness Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and virtual reality (VR) to enhance pavement quality in smart cities.

The study developed an autonomous system that relies on crowdsourced RGB and depth (RGB-D) data to assess road conditions. A cost-effective data acquisition system that can be mounted on multiple vehicles, was developed. Armed with a substantial dataset of RGB-D pavement surface data, this study explores the effectiveness of various depth-encoding techniques and RGB-D data fusion methods, using pothole detection as a case study. Comprehensive experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of defect detection using deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN). This study considered all major types of pavement defects in order to comprehensively evaluate pavement conditions. The Pavement Surface Evaluation Rating (PASER) for asphalt pavement is used as a case study. The establishment of an expert system for pavement condition evaluation involves the classification and quantification of pavement data. The system also facilitates the tracking of identified defects and repair work, providing up-to-date information on pavement deterioration and maintenance.

Another aspect of this study is the improvement of pavement maintenance quality. To enhance the assessment of the effectiveness of pavement maintenance, this study developed immersive VR modules that provide technical staff with a supplementary platform for training. The training materials focus on two common types of pavement maintenance operations: crack sealing and patching. These modules include an interactive decision-making module for evaluating the quality of operations, as well as a hands-on task-performing module for crack sealing machinery preparation and the procedure of full-depth patching. This dissertation has revealed innovative approaches for integrating cutting-edge technologies into the assessment of pavement conditions. The proposed research aims to improve the safety,

Network Level Decision-Making Using Pavement Structural Condition Information From The Traffic Speed Deflectometer

Shrestha, Shivesh 01 February 2022 (has links)
Pavement structural condition plays a critical role in the rate of pavement deterioration, yet most state highway agencies' network-level decision-making processes are primarily based on surface distresses. Despite the limitations of the traditional structural condition measuring devices, some states have experimented with stationary deflection devices for network-level applications. Over the past decade, continuous deflection devices have become capable of measuring the network-level pavement structural condition information. However, since the traffic speed deflection devices use newer technology, there is a need for guidelines on how the state agencies could make use of this information for pavement management decision-making. This dissertation developed processes and enhanced tools to incorporate the pavement structural condition from the TSD into Virginia's network-level pavement management process This first part of the study developed pavement deterioration models for a subset of road networks in Virginia, to show that the pavement structural condition as measured by the TSD has an impact on the rate of deterioration of the surface condition. A structural condition matrix was then developed to augment the treatment selection process currently used by VDOT. Application of the augmented matrix on the tested Interstate network resulted in reducing the percentage of the network requiring CM and increasing the percentage requiring PM and RM. The second part of the study investigated the possibility of using pavement deflection measurements obtained from the TSD for network-level structural evaluation of pavements in Virginia. The study reported that the structural condition obtained with the TSD can replace the structural condition obtained from the FWD that is currently used in the VDOT PMS. The effective structural number (SNeff) calculated from the TSD and FWD had similar distribution, and the calculated consistency between the TSD SNeff and FWD SNeff was higher than the consistency between the SNeff from two repeated sets of FWD measurements. The third part of the study simulated the network level decision-making approaches based on both the structural condition parameter and the surface condition parameter, considering cases with and without the pavement treatment interval. The study reported that network-level decisions based on the pavement surface condition alone can result in significantly different treatment selection, compared to decisions based on the pavement structural condition. The study reported savings of 9% and 11% for cases with and without considering the pavement treatment intervals, using decision-making based on the structural condition. / Doctor of Philosophy / Pavement structural condition plays a critical role in the rate of pavement deterioration, yet most state highway agencies' network-level decision-making processes are primarily based on surface distresses.
