Este trabalho busca demonstrar a possível aproximação entre as fotografias e a narrativa de Juan Rulfo, em especial do romance Pedro Páramo, a partir da análise de três conceitos presentes em ambas obras, a saber, tempo, morte e história. A aproximação tem em conta as especificidades de cada uma das expressões artísticas desenvolvidas por Rulfo e não toma a sua fotografia como uma ilustração da narrativa ou vice-versa, como é comum ocorrer nas análises comparativas de suas obras. A análise dos conceitos abordados em uma e outra expressão artística do escritor-fotógrafo demonstra a problematização das mesmas questões tanto em suas fotografias como em sua narrativa a partir de abordagens distintas e, por vezes, oferecendo concepções contraditórias. A presença destes três conceitos nas produções artísticas de Juan Rulfo permite entrever que as questões que movem o seu trabalho artístico são análogas e que, através delas, podemos analisar sua obra como um todo. / This research works to demonstrate the possible approximation between Juan Rulfoss photography and narrative, specially in the novel Pedro Páramo, from the analysis of three concepts present in both his oeuvre: time, death and history. This approach considers the specificity of each of the artistic expressions developed by Rulfo what avoids thinking about the photographs as illustrations of the narrative or vise versa. The analysis of the concepts addressed in both artistic expressions of the writer-photographer demonstrates the questioning of the same issues both in the photographs and in the narrative from distinct perspectives, what, sometimes, offers contradictory conceptions. However, the presence of these three concepts in Rulfos artistic oeuvre allows us to detect that the questions that motivate his work are analogous and there through we can analyze his work as a whole.

The aim of this study is not to explain Juan Rulfo in the light of William Faulkner, although the latter's influence among Spanish American writers is unquestionable. Rather, I propose to specifically examine Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! and Rulfo's Pedro Paramo in comparative terms, since both novels are about the conflict between human desire and reality: they deal with longings, particularly those of Thomas Sutpen and Pedro Paramo, which never achieve ultimate satisfaction, in spite of these central characters' overwhelming and obsessive will to power which creates Sutpen's Hundred and Comala in the image of each protagonist. Each character tries to assume the omnipotence of a god, once his unthinking participation in the existential reality has been destroyed by chance traumatic occurrences. Comparable metamorphic organizing images exist in the two novels: a square and a circle. They represent the protagonists' conception of a protected space/world with an illusory center, born out of desire and representing an ideal which would render meaningful Sutpen's and Paramo's existence. The heart of Sutpen's dream is an heir to continue his dynasty and Paramo is haunted by the idealized Susana whom he claims to be the reason of all his actions. However, the two fabricated worlds are eventually revealed as fictions, and the centers of both structures collapse into the dust of reality. What remains of the two protagonists is only a motionless marble tombstone in a decayed plantation and a crumbled heap of stones in a moribund village. The inheritors of the two worlds are a mulatto idiot and an incestuous couple. After commenting on some critical opinions of the two novels and their protagonists, I trace the conception, the workings, and the collapse, with its consequences, of the two worlds of desire. I follow an approximately chronologial order, although the two texts are anything but chronological.

Las raíces de la novela Pedro Páramo emergen desde la infancia del autor. La muerte atraviesa en la novela todos los fragmentos desde el comienzo hasta el final. En la escritura de Juan Rulfo, la muerte del padre es como una cuña que marca hondo cada letra. El ir tras las huellas que deja su escritura, arrastra al lector a vivencias que van más cerca de la desilusión, de la pérdida, del dolor, del odio, de la destrucción y de la muerte que de la esperanza, del júbilo, de la luminosidad. Las imágenes que surgen de fertilidad, vida, amor, paz, unidad, tienden a desvanecerse. Forman parte de un discurso paralelo, de una dualidad que se transforma para los personajes que la padecen en un refugio, en una huida, en un recurso defensivo frente a una realidad que atemoriza, fatiga o enloquece.

O espaço em ambos os romances é construído por uma linguagem poética que prima por recursos de composição técnica e estrutural inovadores o que aproxima, entre outras coisas, as obras desses dois grandes expoentes da literatura latino-americana que, dessa maneira, retrataram a complexidade das sociedades da América Latina, simbolizadas num espaço rural emblemático que expressa, em perspectiva poética e sem caráter documental, diversas facetas da realidade. / Resumen: El presente trabajo propone a desarrollar un análisis comparativo entre las novelas São Bernardo (1934), del brasileño Graciliano Ramos (1892-1953), y Pedro Páramo (1955), del mexicano Juan Rulfo (1918-1986), con el objetivo de demostrar cómo se articula el proceso de construcción del espacio en dichas obras, tratando de explicitar las similitudes y contrastes entre ellas, desde la percepción de que ambas proyectan, en dicho proceso, los lugares que revelan los conflictos sociales, psicológicos y existenciales del hombre en la confrontación con su origen y su destino. El espacio en ambas novelas se articula en un lenguaje poético que da primacía a los recursos de la composición técnica y estructural innovadores. Ello, entre otros aspectos, acerca a las obras de estos dos grandes exponentes de la literatura latinoamericana que, al hacerlo, describen la complejidad de las sociedades en América Latina, simbolizado, en un espacio rural emblemático que expresa en perspectiva poética y sin carácter documental, los diversos aspectos de la realidad. / Mestre

La novela Pedro Páramo es una obra compleja y susceptible de múltiples interpretaciones en clave simbólica. El presente trabajo muestra una de tales interpretaciones donde marxismo y psicoanálisis obran en conjunción como métodos de análisis literario. En él se extraen conclusiones referentes a la dialéctica histórica como concepción del mundo propia de una clase social, y al mismo tiempo referidas a las estructuras de la personalidad humana surgidas a partir del complejo de Edipo. Un análisis ideológico y psicoanalítico resulta en una lectura simbólica coherente donde la propia ideología es puesta en entredicho y en el que una personalidad arquetípica es perfilada a través de los personajes y su estatus social.

We intend to reflect about the proportion that the work finishes the perspectives of contemporary latin american narrative and joins it in a social memory. The concept of fantastic used for the present study is based on Todorov (1975), which recognizes it as a time of hesitation caused in the reader as a reflection of the narrative. The inherent hesitation in the fantastic corresponds to the unfinished dialog between the rational and the nonrational, to the imbalance between reality and the supernatural, to the unbelievable reasonableness caused by the occurrence of the supernatural and its consequent questioning. In this perspective, we looked for theoretical support in the reflections proposed by the Cuban Alejo Carpentier (1954), when it comes to the wonderful realism as opposition to the wonderful proposed by surrealists. It is important to detach that, in the context of the latin american literature production, the notion of wonderful real would be a result of the cultural mix of Latin America, according to Alejo Carpentier. It is observed, in Pedro Páramo, a rupture attempt and reversal with the hierarchy and traditional aesthetics of text, as the plausible and implausible are incorporated, thus distorting ritual practices of speeches until then practiced and inaugurate a new poetic way, where minorities are convened to integrate the new discursive woof and to contribute in the deconstruction of hegemonic discourse in Latin- American context. Pedro Páramo is alongside other works responsible by the revolution in the sense of contravening the rules in the style of writing and in the form of addressing the issue of Latin American culture. / Esta pesquisa almeja verificar como se realizam esteticamente elementos do fantástico e a composição narrativa na obra Pedro Páramo, de 1955, de Juan Rulfo. Pretende-se refletir em que medida a obra encerra perspectivas da narrativa contemporânea latino-americana e abarca uma memória social. O conceito de fantástico empregado para o presente trabalho está fundamentado em Todorov (1975), que o reconhece como tempo de hesitação provocada no leitor como reflexo da narrativa. A hesitação inerente ao fantástico corresponde ao diálogo inconcluso entre o racional e o não racional, ao desequilíbrio entre a realidade e o sobrenatural, ao verossímil inacreditável causado pela ocorrência do sobrenatural e seu consequente questionamento. Nessa perspectiva, buscou-se também respaldo teórico nas reflexões do cubano Alejo Carpentier (1954), quando o mesmo trata do realismo maravilhoso como oposição ao maravilhoso proposto pelos surrealistas. Cabe destacar que, no contexto da produção literária latino-americana, a noção de real maravilhoso seria uma resultante da mestiçagem cultural da América Latina, segundo Alejo Carpentier. Observa-se, em Pedro Páramo, uma tentativa de rompimento e de inversão com a hierarquia e com a estética tradicional do texto, à medida que o verossímil e o inverossímil se incorporam, subvertendo as práticas ritualizadas dos discursos até então praticados e inauguram um novo fazer poético, onde as minorias são convocadas a integrar a nova trama discursiva e a contribuir na desconstrução do discurso hegemônico no contexto latino-americano. Pedro Páramo coloca-se ao lado de outras obras responsáveis pela revolução no sentido de transgressão às normas vigentes de estilo da escrita e na forma de abordar a temática cultural da/na América Latina.

Este estudo não pretende abordar o espaço como mero cenário no qual acontece a narrativa literária, mas sim como um conjunto indissociável do qual participam, de um lado, objetos geográficos e sociais e, de outro, a vida que os preenche e que os anima. Portanto, neste trabalho não há como delimitar o ambiente sem levarmos em consideração os protagonistas: o espaço não é somente cenário físico e geografia povoados de referentes, mas é também metáfora ou imagem capaz de dar sentido às experiências sociais dos personagens. Por isso nosso objeto de estudo será analisado de forma multifacetada, assumindo aspectos relacionados à estrutura narrativa e à construção de efeitos de sentido dentro da obra literária. O material empírico que serviu de inspiração e ponto de partida para este estudo foi coletado nas viagens ao interior mexicano: Sayula, San Gabriel, Apulco e Tonaya / Abstract: This research aims to study how the spatial constructions works in Pedro Páramo, published in 1955, by the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo (1917-1986). This study is not intended to address the space as a mere case scenario in which the literary narrative, but as an indivisible set which involves, on one hand, geographical and social objects and, on the other, the life that fills and animates them. Therefore, in this work there is no way to define the environment without taking into consideration the protagonists: the space is not only physical landscape and geography of settlements related, but it is also a metaphor or image can make sense of the social experiences of the characters. Therefore, our object of study will be analyzed in a multifaceted way, assuming aspects of the narrative structure and the construction of effect within the meaning of literary work. The object of this study is to investigate the structure and the representation of Magical Realism in the novel Pedro Páramo by the Mexican author Juan Rulfo. The intention is to show the reader of this study some distinguished aspects of the Magical Realism and how this aspects are shown in the novel. The analysis is made with the help of some theories of how the structure of a text works. We have then compared the structure with some general aspects of the Magical Realism. We are bringing up different parts such as the topic, the characters and the room. Furthermore this study is based on the premise that many people characterize this novel being one of the first Latin-American novels using Magical Realism, but also making use of a complex structure that easily confuse the reader and the interpretation of the novel. Our study shows that the structure of Pedro Páramo is very extraordinary but at the same time the novel contains many general aspects of the Magical Realism. One example is the timeaspect, jumping back and forth. Another is the symbolism between the nature and some different scenarios of the story. Last but not least we have the topic of death. The aim of the essay is mainly to bring some clearness and to help other readers to interpret and analyze this fantastic novel.

La finalidad de este trabajo es analizar la obra Pedro Páramo de Juan Rulfo, utilizando la simbología para demostrar nuestra hipótesis, que Juan Preciado está muerto al emprender su viaje a Comala. El método utilizado es el método hermenéutico, para rellenar los huecos del texto, contando lo que no se percibe en una primera lectura, a través de un análisis textual. La parte analítica está dividida en dos. En la primera parte basamos nuestro análisis en los símbolos del texto y en la segunda efectuamos una lectura basada en otros indicios que no sean simbólicos. Hemos efectuado nuestro trabajo utilizando desde la primera página de la obra hasta que Juan se encuentra en la tumba con Dorotea, y también algunas de las conversaciones que mantienen allí.
