Interações tróficas entre espécies pelágicas do Atlântico Sudoeste: utilizando isótopos estáveis e inferência bayesiana

A coleta dos peixes foi realizada em parceria com a frota atuneira de Santos – SP, cuja área de operação compreende o mar aberto frente às regiões Sudeste e Sul do Brasil . De maneira geral, os resultados indicam que: (1) A dieta de T. albacares e T. obesus é composta primariamente por peixes teleósteos (Bramidae, Gempylidae, Trichiuridae, ent re outros), e secundariamente por moluscos Teuthida (lulas em geral ); (2) Thunnus alalunga apresentou um padrão inverso aos demais atuns anal isados, alimentando-se preferencialmente de moluscos Teuthida, deixando os peixes teleósteos em segundo plano; (3) O espadarte (Xiphias gladius) alimenta-se primariamente de lulas Ommast rephidae; (4) a alimentação de I. oxyrinchus e A. superciliosus foi dominada por cefalópodes da ordem Teuthida. Ent re os peixes, destaque para as famílias Scombridae e Trichiuridae; (5) A análise da assinatura isotópica dos predadores corroborou os padrões descri tos pela análise do conteúdo estomacal; (6) as espécies de Scombridae são presas importantes para os predadores de topo, como X. gladius e A. superciliosus. Os achados remontam a importância de pesquisas que analisem a alimentação de peixes explorados comercialmente, visto que estes estudos podem... / In order to cont ribute to the diet knowledge of fish that inhabit the pelagic environment of the southwest Atlantic Ocean, and in consequence be aware about this species insertion in the t rophic web, a study involving four distinct aspects was made up in chapters: (1) stomach content analyses of Thunnus albacares, T. obesus, T. alalunga, Xiphias gladius, Isurus oxyrinchus e Alopias superciliosus; (2) use of Bayesian inference in analyzing the diet of these predators; (3) by using the isotopic signatures of the predators, as well as their prey, to assume thei r trophic role in the system. Fish collect ions were made by collaboration of the Santos-SP tuna fishery fleet, which operates in an area comprising the open sea off the southern and southeastern Brazilian coast . In general results indicate that: (1) The T. albacares and T. obesus diet consists primarily of teleost fishes (Bramidae, Gempyl idae, Trichiuridae, among others), and secondarily of Teuthida squids; (2) Thunnus alalunga showed an opposite food composition when compared to the other tunas, feeding mainly on Teuthida squids, and teleost fish comprised a second food in importance; (3) the swordfish (Xiphias gladius) feeds mainly on the Ommast rephidae squids; (4) the food of I. oxyrinchus and A. superciliosus was dominated by cephalopods Teuthida. Among fishes, the emphasis is represented by the representatives of families Scombridae and Trichiuridae; (5) (5) The predators isotopic signature analysis corroborated the described pat terns shown by the stomach contents analyses; (6) The Scombridae species are important prey species for the top predators, such as X. gladius and A. superciliosus. Modulation of Prey-Capture Kinematics and Suction Feeding Performance in Smallmouth Bass, Micropterus Dolomieu

The feeding behavior of fishes is a topic that has piqued the interests of many researchers given the dynamic and ancestral nature of aquatic prey-capture. This study examines aquatic feeding in terms of the suction and ram components of feeding in smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, and how they modulate their kinematic behavior when attacking pelagic and benthic prey. Relative to other Micropterus genera, the reduced gape in smallmouth bass suggests they may create considerable suction pressure – stronger subambient pressure pulled through a smaller opening creates greater velocity. Suction feeding is useful when feeding on benthic prey, such as crayfish. Ram feeding is utilized when capturing pelagic prey, such as goldfish, because prey swimming in the water column can be overtaken with body speed. Prey-capture experiments using high-speed cinematography and pressure transducers were conducted to determine if smallmouth bass modulate their feeding performance between pelagic and benthic prey items. Results indicate that smallmouth bass modulate their behavior to include both aspects of ram and suction feeding when presented with differing prey, utilizing greater ram when feeding in the water column and stronger suction when feeding off the substrate (MANCOVA, p

Acoustic and ecological investigations into predator-prey interactions between Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and seal and bird predators

1. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) form aggregations known as swarms that vary greatly in size and density. Six acoustic surveys were conducted as part of multidisciplinary studies at two study sites, the western and eastern core boxes (WCB and ECB), during the 1997, 1998 and 1999 austral summers, at South Georgia. A quantitative, automated, image processing algorithm was used to identify swarms, and calculate swarm descriptors, or metrics. In contrast to acoustic surveys of aggregations of other pelagic species, a strong correlation (r = 0.88, p = 0.02, 95% C.I.= 0.24 to 0.99) between the number of krill swarms and the mean areal krill density [rho.hat] was found. Multivariate analysis was used to partition swarms into three types, based on contrasting morphological and internal krill density parameters. Swarm types were distributed differently between inter-surveys and between on and off-shelf regions. This swarm type variation has implications for krill predators, by causing spatial heterogeneity in swarm detectability, suggesting that for optimal foraging to occur, predators must engage in some sort of adaptive foraging strategy. 2. Krill predator-prey interactions were found to occur at multiple spatial and temporal scales, in a nested, or hierarchical structure. At the largest inter-survey scale, an index of variability, I, was developed to compare variation in survey-scale predator sightings, sea temperature and [rho.hat]. Using I and a two-way ANOVA, core box, rather than year, was found to be a more important factor in determining species distribution. The absence of Blue-petrels (Halobaena caerulea) and the elevated number of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) suggest that 1998 was a characterised by colder than average water surrounding South Georgia, and a high [rho.hat] in the ECB. At the smaller, intra-survey scales (<80 km, <5 day), the characteristic scale (distances in which predator group size, or krill density were similar, L_s) were determined. For krill and predators L_s varied by survey and the L_s of krill also varied by depth within a survey. Overlap in L_s were stronger between predator species than between a predator species and krill, indicating predators were taking foraging cues from the activity of predators, rather than from the underlying krill distribution. No relationship was found between swarm characteristics and predator activity, suggesting either there is no relationship between krill swarms and predators, or that the predator and acoustic observation techniques may not be appropriate to detect such a relationship. 3. To overcome the 2-D sampling limitations of conventional echosounders, a multibeam echosounder (MBE) observed entire swarms in three-dimensions. Swarms found in the nearshore environment of Livingston Island situated in the South Shetland Islands, exhibited only a narrow range of surface area to volume ratios or roughnesses (R = 3.3, CV = 0.23), suggesting that krill adopt a consistent group behaviour to maintain swarm shape. Generalized additive models (GAM) suggested that the presence of air-breathing predators influenced the shape of a krill swarm (R decreased in the presence of predators: the swarm became more spherical). A 2D distance sampling framework was used to estimate the abundance, N, and associated variance of krill swarms. This technique took into account angular and range detectability (half-normal, [sigma_r.hat] = 365.00 m, CV = 0.16) and determined the vertical distribution of krill swarms to be best approximated by a beta-distribution ([alpha.hat] = 2.62, [CV.hat] = 0.19; [beta.hat] = 2.41, [CV.hat] = 0.15), giving the abundance of swarms in survey region as [N.hat] = 5,062 ([CV.hat] = 0.35). This research represents a substantial contribution to developing estimation of pelagic biomass using MBEs. 4. When using a single- or split-beam missing pings occur when the transmit or receive cycles are interrupted, often by aeration of the water column, under the echosounder transducer during rough weather. A thin-plate regression spline based approach was used to model the missing krill data, with knots chosen using a branch and bound algorithm. This method performs well for acoustic observations of krill swarms where data are tightly clustered and change rapidly. For these data the technique outperformed the standard MGCV GAM, and the technique is applicable for estimating acoustically derived biomass from line transect surveys.

Dinâmica do acoplamento bento-pelágico na plataforma interna ao largo de Ubatuba (São Paulo, Brasil) / Benthic-pelagic coupling dynamics on the inner shelf of Ubatuba (Sao Paulo, Brazil)

Os sedimentos costeiros são importantes globalmente, pois atuam como receptores de grandes quantidades de material orgânico alóctone e autóctone, sendo responsáveis por cerca de 90% do enterramento de carbono no oceano global. Dentro dos ecossistemas de plataforma continental, a fauna bêntica desempenha papel vital tanto como receptora de energia proveniente do pelagial, quanto como fornecedora de energia para os organismos demersais e de nutrientes para o fitoplâncton. O objetivo principal do presente trabalho foi investigar a variação temporal da dinâmica da macrofauna bêntica na plataforma interna de Ubatuba. A dinâmica bêntica foi analisada pela abundância, biomassa, descritores da comunidade (riqueza, diversidade, equitatividade) e análise trófica dos grupos mais abundantes, em função da origem e composição da matéria orgânica sedimentar. As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente em uma estação fixa, com início em outubro de 2006, por um período de um ano. A estação fixa possui uma profundidade de 40 m e um regime oceanográfico de transição entre águas costeiras e de plataforma continental. A composição da matéria orgânica em termos de MOT, fitopigmentos, fitodetritos e biomarcadores lipídicos apresentou uma complexidade típica de ambientes de plataforma interna, relacionados à dinâmica oceanográfica que rege os principais eventos de acúmulo ou remoção da matéria orgânica lábil na região de Ubatuba. A composição dos biomarcadores lipídicos presentes no sedimento evidenciou que a matéria orgânica particulada na região de plataforma interna de Ubatuba possui uma origem principalmente autóctone, e que está constituída por uma combinação de material derivado do plâncton vivo ou detrítico, da produção bacteriana e da fauna associada ao sedimento, havendo uma contribuição terrestre relativamente pequena. O presente estudo indicou que a dinâmica bêntica na região da plataforma interna de Ubatuba é moldada por forçantes ambientais, como a intrusão de massas dágua (e.g. ACAS) trazendo nutrientes para a zona fótica e estimulando a produção primária fitoplanctônica nova, induzindo o aumento na densidade e biomassa bêntica. A chegada de frentes frias, com ventos fortes, mistura da coluna dágua e revolvimento do fundo também possui fundamental importância, através do decréscimo nos valores dos parâmetros da comunidade bêntica. Esse padrão de acúmulo e remoção sugere que a biota bêntica da plataforma interna de Ubatuba esteja numa constante dinâmica de colonização e recolonização, que pode ser chave na manutenção de altos níveis de riqueza e equitatividade na região. Os resultados obtidos no presente estudo sugerem um íntimo e complexo acoplamento bentopelágico dependente, por um lado, de eventos oceanográficos de mesoescala (i.e. centenas de km; intrusão da ACAS) e, por outro, de eventos atmosféricos que influenciam o sistema bêntico em escala local, através da ressuspensão de sedimentos. / Coastal sediments are globally important for their role in the carbon cycle, being responsible for about 90% of the carbon burial in the global ocean. In continental shelf ecosystems, benthic communities play a vital role receiving energy from the pelagic system, serving as food source for demersal organisms, recycling nutrients back to the water column and sequestering part of the carbon into deeper layers of marine sediments. The present study aimed to investigate the variation on the dynamics of the benthic macrofauna on the inner shelf off Ubatuba-SP. Benthic macrofauna abundance, biomass, species richness, diversity, equitability and polychaete trophic groups were compared with the origin and composition of sedimentary organic matter. Sampling was carried out on a monthly basis starting in October 2006 for a year in a permanent station at 40 meters depth. The area is characterized by a transition between coastal and oceanic regimens. Sedimentary organic matter composition in terms of total organic matter, lipid biomarkers and phytopigments and phytodetritus showed a complexity typical from inner shelves and was driven by oceanic and atmospheric dynamics. Lipid biomarker composition revealed that particulated organic matter was mainly derived from autochthonous sources, composed of a combination of material derived from live plankton and detritic remains, bacterial production and from the benthic metazoan fauna. Terrestrial contribution to the sediment organic matter was small. The present study indicated that the benthic dynamics in the inner shelf off Ubatuba is molded by environmental forcing, especially the intrusion of water masses onto the shelf (e.g. ACAS), which brings nutrients to the euphotic zone stimulating new phytoplanktonic primary production. This enhances the flux of organic matter to the bottom increasing the benthic biota density and biomass. The arrival of cold fronts, with strong S-SW winds promoting water column mixing and sediment resuspension, was also fundamental in decreasing benthic community parameters (i.e. abundance and biomass). The dynamics of organic matter accumulation and removal suggest that the benthic biota in the inner shelf of Ubatuba is subjected to a constant pattern of settling and recolonization, which can be a key factor in the maintenance of high levels of species richness and equitability. The results obtained in the present study suggest a strong and complex benthic-pelagic coupling, influenced by mesoescale oceanographic events (i.e. hundreds of km; intrusion of ACAS) on the one hand and, on the other, by atmospheric events influencing the benthic system on a local scale, through the remobilization of sediments.

Os estudos sobre a ecologia de ovos e larvas de peixes em áreas costeiras desempenham um papel relevante para o entendimento da biologia das espécies, visto que essa fase de desenvolvimento é o mais crítico do seu ciclo de vida. Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal descrever a variação temporal da comunidade ictioplanctônica em estação fixa localizada em Ubatuba-SP (23º 36,79&#8217; S; 44º 53,46&#8217; W), e analisar sua relação com a hidrografia local, entre fevereiro/2014 e fevereiro/2015. Para o melhor entendimento da área de estudo foi realizado: análise de percentuais de massa de água, composição, densidade, distribuição temporal das larvas de peixes e uma análise multivariada de componentes principais (ACP). Os principais resultados mostram a alta influência da Água Costeira (&#8805; 50%) nos primeiros 10 m de profundidade em todos os meses de coleta. A Água Tropical não foi identificada com altos percentuais (&#8805; 50%), com exceção de junho e julho . A Água Central do Atlântico Sul (ACAS) comparece com altos percentuais (&#8805; 50%) em fevereiro, outubro, novembro e dezembro/2014. A concentração média de Clorofila a, nas campanhas com alta influência da ACAS, foi de 1,98&#177;1,25 mg m-3 e, nas campanhas com baixa influência da ACAS, foi de 1,04&#177;0,71 mg m-3. A biomassa total do zooplâncton foi maior na rede de malha 50 &#956;m e menor na de 200 &#956;m. Foram coletadas 2.446 larvas de peixes, sendo que 1.906 foram identificadas em 17 ordens, 25 famílias, 23 gêneros e 26 espécies. Paralichthyidae e Sciaenidae tiveram frequência de ocorrência (FO) superior a 80% e densidade superior a 40 larvas 100 m-3; a FO de Ophidiidae e Carangidae foi de 58 e 67%, respetivamente. A análise de PCA evidenciou a formação de três grupos de espécies, cuja densidade e frequência de ocorrência variam no decorrer do ano, especialmente em função da maior ou menor influência da ACAS. / Studies on the ecology of fish eggs and larvae in coastal regions are important to understand the biology of species, since this developmental stage is the most critical in its life cycle. This study aims to describe the temporal variation of ichthyoplankton community in a fixed sampling station at Ubatuba-SP (23º 36.79&#8217; S; 44º 53.46&#8217; W), and to evaluate its relation with the local hydrographical regime along a year, February/2014 to February/2015. Mixotrophy and pelagic ecosystem dynamics / Mixotrophie et dynamiques de l'écosystème pélagique

Les espèces protistes ont été traditionnellement classifiées comme des plantes ou des animaux en raison de l’absence ou présence des chloroplastes. L’état actuel de la connaissance indique qu’un grand nombre d’espèces protistes portent des chloroplastes mais que physiologiquement elles sont capables d’utiliser l’autotrophie (photosynthèse) ou l’hétérotrophie pour se nourrir. La combinaison de ces deux modes trophiques par une même cellule est nommée mixotrophie. Chez les protistes l’hétérotrophie peut s’effectuer soit par la consommation des particules par phagocytose, e.g. des proies bactériennes, ou bien par l’absorption des composants organiques dissouts, i.e. osmotrophie. La mixotrophie est de plus en plus décrit chez les protistes dans tous les habitats aquatiques. Les écologistes du plancton constatent la récurrence de la mixotrophie chez les formes traditionnelles « phyto»plancton et micro »zoo »plancton. Cependant, identifier et quantifier la mixotrophie reste toujours un défi méthodologique. Dans cette étude nous nous sommes intéressés à la mixotrophie chez les espèces phytoplanctoniques marines, en particulier à leur nutrition phagotrophique de proies bactériennes. Nous avons testé des techniques modernes afin d’identifier la mixotrophie dans des cellules phytoplanctoniques. La technique cytogénétique d’hybridation in situ Card-FISH en utilisant de sondes d’ARN ribosomique 16S a été effectuée suivant des protocoles existant pour des bactéries et des protistes. Cette technique s’est avérée être un outil précieux pour visualiser des groupes phylogénétiques bactériens en association avec le phytoplancton à l’aide de la microscopie à épifluorescence, sans avoir besoin d'un isolement préalable des cellules ou des interférences avec l'association microbienne. Cependant, la méthode a échoué pour visualiser mixotrophie chez le phytoplancton car la sonde eubactérienne générale(EUB338) combine une large gamme d'espèces phytoplanctoniques, ce qui rend impossible de discriminer les signaux fluorescents provenant de tissus bactérienne ou phytoplanctonique. Le contexte de ces études est le phytoplancton et les bactéries hétérotrophes lesquels constituent des principaux concurrents pour les nutriments inorganiques dissouts. Cependant, les consommateurs de bactéries, i.e.phytoflagellés mixotrophes, peuvent être favorisés dans de telles situations car la hausse de DOC donne lieu à l'abondance plus élevé des proies bactériennes.En outre, nos résultats indiquent un potentiel effet positif de la température sur le mode de nutrition hétérotrophe de l’espèce, ainsi qu’une croissante contribution des espèces mixotrophes au sein des communautés de phytoplancton dans des conditions des hautes températures des eaux de surface de la mer. / Protist species were traditionally classified morphologically as either „plants“ or „animals“, based on the absence or presence of chloroplasts. State of science is that a high number of protist species carrychloroplasts but are nutritionally able to employ both autotrophy (photosynthesis) and heterotrophywithin a single cell. This combination of autotrophic and heterotrophic mode of nutrition within a single species is named mixotrophy. In protists, heterotrophy can be realized either by the uptake of food particles (e.g. bacterial prey) through phagocytosis or by the uptake of dissolved organic compounds (i.e.osmotrophy). Mixotrophy is globally and increasingly described in protists from all types of aquatic habitats. Plankton ecologists nowadays assess mixotrophy among the traditionally typified “phyto”plankton and mikro”zoo”plankton species as regularity. Nevertheless, detection and quantification of mixotrophy is still a methodological challenge. In this study, we focused on mixotrophy in marine phytoplankton species and put emphasis on its phagotrophic nutrition from heterotrophic bacterial prey. State of the art methodology was tested to visualize mixotrophy in single phytoplankton cells. Catalyzedreported deposition-fluorescence in situ hybridization (Card-FISH), using 16S ribosomal RNA probes,was employed based on existing protocols for bacteria and protists. The method proved to be a valuable tool to visualise bacterial phylogenetic groups in association with phytoplankton by epifluorescence microscopy without need for prior isolation of cells or interference with the microbial association.However, the method failed to visualize mixotrophy in phytoplankton since the general eubacterial probe(EUB338) hybridised a broad range of phytoplankton species making it impossible to discriminate fluorescent signals originating from bacterial or phytoplankton tissue. Background of these studies is phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria being major competitors for dissolved inorganic nutrients. In case that bacterial growth is carbon limited, increasing concentrations of degradable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) enhance bacterial growth and consumption of dissolved nutrients and there by negatively affect autotrophic phytoplankton growth. Bacteria consuming mixotrophic phytoflagellates, however, may gain in importance in such situations since DOC provokes higher bacterial prey supply.In addition, our results indicate a potential positive effect of temperature on O. minima´s heterotrophic nutrition mode, and indicate a potential increasing contribution of mixotrophic species to phytoplankton communities under increasing sea surface water temperatures.

Evaluation of Mysis partial diel vertical migration

Mass animal migrations represent large movements of biomass, energy, and nutrients with predictable patterns and important ecosystem-level consequences. Diel vertical migration (DVM) in aquatic systems, the daily movement of organisms from deeper depths during the day to shallower depths in the water column at night, is widespread in freshwater and marine systems. Recent studies, however, suggest partial migration behavior, whereby only some portion of a population migrates, is the rule rather than the exception in a range of migratory fauna, including those that undergo DVM. Hypotheses to explain why partial migrations occur complicate traditional views on DVM and challenge conventional theories. I address intraspecific variation in DVM behavior of an aquatic omnivore, Mysis diluviana, to test several long-standing assumptions about benthic-pelagic DVM in Mysis. I evaluated the extent of partial DVM and several potential drivers within a Lake Champlain Mysis population. I used traditional net-based field observations, a novel deep-water video camera system, and a laboratory experiment, to compare distributions, demographics, abundance estimates, hunger-satiation state, and feeding behavior, of migrant and non-migrant Mysis across multiple seasons, habitats, and different times of the day. Findings from my dissertation suggest Mysis partial DVM is common, and is associated with body size and demographic differences among individuals. Partial DVM behavior, however, did not correspond to strong differences in feeding preference or hunger-satiation state of individuals. My results contribute toward a more comprehensive understanding of migration theory and mysid biology, by including the often overlooked, but important, benthic habitat component of DVM studies, and fills in several ecological knowledge gaps regarding a key omnivore in many deep lake food webs across North America where Mysis serve as both predators and prey to many organisms.

A meta-analysis of the value of marine protected areas for pelagic apex predators

<p>A vast range of theoretical and empirical studies now suggests that MPAs can conserve marine biodiversity and, under some circumstances, increase fishery yields. However, despite the importance of pelagic apex predators to ecosystem function, the effectiveness of spatial management for the conservation of pelagic apex predator species is still unknown. I used fishery-dependent logbook and observer datasets to assess fishing effort and both the catch and size of pelagic apex predator species around five different MPAs. The US Hawaii-based deep-set or Atlantic pelagic longline fisheries fish the waters around these MPAs; both of these fisheries have experienced multiple management measures over time to protect species and maximize fishery yield. The MPAs selected for this study range in size, age, level of protection, and reason for establishment. I found that only two MPAs of the five appeared to be benefitting the pelagic apex predator species that I selected: the DeSoto Canyon and East Florida Coast MPAs, both in the Atlantic Ocean. The size of yellowfin tuna around the DeSoto Canyon MPA borders has increased over time, as has fishing effort. In contrast, the size of swordfish has decreased near the boundary of the East Florida Coast MPA, although the catch of swordfish has increased. The increase in catch of smaller swordfish was not a surprise because the East Florida Coast MPA was established around an area that is a nursery habitat for swordfish. These results are promising for the use of static MPAs for the conservation of pelagic apex predators, but three of the MPAs in my study did not show any indication of increased fishing effort, increased catch, or changes in pelagic apex predator size near their boundaries over time. Therefore, the characteristics of the DeSoto Canyon and East Florida Coast MPAs may provide a template for how to best design new MPAs for pelagic apex predators. Both of these MPAs were established with the specific intent of reducing pelagic apex predator bycatch, in areas where there were historically high catch rates. Both areas are relatively large (> 85,000 km2) and are also closed year-round. In combination, these characteristics may provide protection for pelagic apex predators.</p> / Dissertation

The Spatial Ecology of Predator-prey Relationships in Lakes / L'écologie Spatiale des Relations Prédateur-Proie dans les Lacs

The pelagic zone of lakes is defined as the water column over the area of the lake benthos that does not receive enough light from the sun to allow macrophytes to grow. The four chapters of this thesis explore the spatial ecology of predator-prey interactions between schooling fish and their fish predators in this featureless environment. We first developed novel hydroacoustics methods to study fish and fish school swimming behaviour in the pelagic zone (Chapter 1 and 2). Then we characterized our in-situ school formation and prey movement observations using an ideal gas model to better understand the mechanisms that lead to fish and school densities during the daytime (Chapter 2 and 3). With this model we estimated the functional relationship between the schooling prey densities and predator encounter rates, and verified with empirical data a counterintuitive relationship that encounter rates decreased as overall prey densities increased (Chapter 3). The encounter rates suggested that predation within the pelagic zone might be greatly influenced by external forces if they provide spatial structure which encourages greater degrees of prey aggregation in predictable locations. In this regard we examined the predator-prey dynamics under wind and found large redistributions of prey and predators under windy conditions leading to greater aggregations in downwind locations. Further, we found that our study fish were larger in lakes that were oriented into the wind, perhaps demonstrating a benefit to fish growth under windy conditions (Chapter 4).
