On Wings of Song: Exploring the First-Generation Chinese Art Song Composer Ellinor Valesby (1894-1969)Xu, Jing 05 1900 (has links)
The dissertation presents a female German composer Ellinor Valesby, who composed Chinese art songs in Chinese with classical Chinese poetry. For political reasons, she used her pseudonym rather than her given name Irmgard Heinrich (1894-1969). As a western composer, also the wife of a Chinese poet and composer Ching-chu, who lived in China for 25 years, Valesby's songs present various interpretive challenges stemming from the combination of traditional Chinese poetry, folk music vernacular, and Western music components. Because no documentation in English can be found about Valesby or her songs, there is a need to provide performers with a better understanding of her perspective in these increasingly multicultural times. In addition, the dissertation discusses the germination and development of the Chinese Art Song and introduces the school song, the predecessor of Chinese art songs. The focus is on examining the Chinese and Western influences that appear in Valesby's art songs, revealing through examination of text setting, form, musical texture, and the role of piano how this female Western composer who did not speak Chinese set Chinese poetry from her unique cross-cultural perspectives. Today the legacy of these Chinese art song pioneers remains incomplete, but Valesby and her husband Ching-chu's profound contribution to both Chinese art songs and Chinese musicology remains indisputable.

[pt] CAPM CONDICIONAL NA FORMA EM ESPAÇO DE ESTADOS COM DISTÚRBIOS HETEROCEDÁSTICOS: UMA APLICAÇÃO À ANÁLISE DE PERFORMANCE DE FUNDOS DE AÇÕES BRASILEIROS / [en] CONDITIONAL CAPM IN SPACE-STATE FORM WITH CONDITIONAL HETEROCEDASTIC DISTURBANCE: AN APPLICATION TO THE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF THE BRAZILIAN EQUITY FUNDSLEANDRO SANTOS DA COSTA 18 October 2016 (has links)
[en] The empirical results presented in the literature on the CAPM generally reflect the theoretical flaws of the model in their unconditional form. Thus, two main lines of research have emerged in an attempt to relax some of the model assumptions in its original form, giving rise to so-called multi-factor models and conditional models. In summary, the conditional models are those in which the expected value of the return of an asset is explained conditionally to a set of information available in the previous period, and the sensitivity to the risk factor, beta, as well as the intercept of the equation regression, alpha, are assumed to be time varying parameter. This work has two main objectives: (i) assess comparatively the treatment of conditional CAPM models in state-space form and estimates from the Kalman filter with the residuals of the observation equation in homocedastic and heteroskedastic forms, based on the work of Ortas, Salvador and Moneva (2014); (ii) evaluate how the use of conditional measurements obtained from the conditional CAPM under the approach previously described can improve the current practice of performance evaluation of investment funds from a sample of the Brazilian market. The results obtained indicate that heteroskedastic modeling, from the point of view of the quality of fit for the sample data, is able to provide better results in relation to homocedastic model and corresponding unconditional models, providing better practices for performance evaluation of funds.

Total Praise: An Analysis and Performance Guide of "Come As You Are" (2020) by Steven BanksAllen II, Ricardo John 07 1900 (has links)
Music written by Black composers has often been overlooked in the classical saxophone community regarding study and performance. One piece that is inspired directly by Black culture is Steven Banks' Come As You Are (2020). In this composition, Banks incorporates material directly from classic Negro spirituals and Gospel church hymns. The purpose of this document is to assist in educating classical saxophone pedagogues and performers about a work from an underrepresented composer who is clearly meritorious and whose work is worthy of being added to what might be considered by many as the standard repertoire for the saxophone. Included in this document is a performance guide of Come As You Are, as well as an oral history provided by the composer, Steven Banks.

Verksamhetsstyrning i svensk elithockey : En kvalitativ studie om styrning av ekonomisk, sportslig & social prestation / Management control in Swedish elite-hockey : A qualitative study of management ofeconomic, sporting and social performanceKarlsson, Johan, Nicklasson, Robin January 2024 (has links)
Background: Swedish elite hockey organizations need to take multiple aspects into account. To begin with, they need to make sure that they perform athletically. However, there are also other kinds of performances that are important to the organizations. For example, they need to perform economically, not least in order to actually be allowed to play in the Swedish leagues. Furthermore, they need to perform socially, and produce social values of different kinds. This is all affected by the organizations´ stakeholders, who in many cases have different opinions as to what performances should be prioritized. All of these factors affect the management of the organizations. The special needs for management control, along with the real cases of failure in management of Swedish elite-hockey organizations, mean that there is practical relevance in investigating the subject. Furthermore, the sports industry has undergone extensive changes the past few years, and the industry has become more commercialized. These changes strengthen the theoretical relevance of a study in the field. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to describe and create an understanding of how management control is done in elite hockey organizations, and in particular how they control economic, sporting and social performance. Method: The study is qualitative and has a deductive approach, where a conceptual model created from previous literature was the basis for interview questions. Empirical data was collected through 11 semi-structured interviews with chief financial officers, sport directors and a club director. A total of 5 clubs in the SHL and 3 clubs in Hockeyallsvenskan are included in the study. The empirical data was then analyzed using the conceptual model as a basis. Conclusion: Using the literature, six key components of management control systems were identified: vision, key success factors, organizational structure, strategy and planning, performance measurements and reward systems. The study shows that elite hockey organizations generally use many of the different components, and that the respective use of components can in several cases be related to economic, sporting and social performance. Furthermore, in Swedish elite hockey organizations there are other various internal wills that relate to economic, sporting and social performance. These wills are shaped by the many different demands that exist from key stakeholders. How these wills interact is different depending on the time perspective. In the long term, the wills often work together, while in the short term there can be situations that create conflict.

A Performance Guide to "Four Songs of Solitude" by John Harbison based upon Linear AnalysisLiu, Jiaxi 05 1900 (has links)
This DMA dissertation provides a pragmatic and coherent way of interpreting a piece of post-tonal music, Four Songs of Solitude, by John Harbison. In this study, a modified Schenkerian analysis, namely linear analysis, serves as a methodological tool for the performer to identify and understand the implicit focal pitches, linear progressions, musical directions, and background structures of the music. By exploring this modified Schenkerian approach to interpreting post-tonal music in-depth, the performer is expected to achieve convincing results in performance on stage.

This Ph.D. project has been prepared within the context of an industrial and economic optimisation of UHPFRC structural elements to ensure ductility at the structural level, while adjusting the amount of fibre and optimising the manufacturing process. The model developed explicitly describes the participation of local fibre reinforcement in tension, thanks to a hardening behaviour followed by a softening one. The constitutive law is a function of the local fibre content, of the fibre orientation with respect to tensile principal directions, of the fibre slenderness and other usual material parameters related to the fibres, the cementitious matrix and their interaction. The fibre orientation is taken into account using a normal probability distribution with one or two variables to reproduce any orientation either obtained from a representative simulation of casting fresh UHPFRC or informed by experimental analysis on prototypes. Lastly, the model reproduces the cracking of UHPFRC based on the principle of smeared rotating crack models. The constitutive law is implemented in a structural finite element software as a predictive tool of reliability and overall ductility of UHPFRC elements. Two experimental campaigns were carried out, one at Laval University in Québec and one at Ifsttar, Marne-la-Vallée. The first one is used to confirm the model ability to reproducethe overall behaviour under typical tensile and bending loads in simple structural elements for which the preferential fibre orientation was measured by microtomography. The second experimental campaign demonstrates the capabilities of the model, in an optimisation process, to help manufacture relatively complex ribbed triangular plates of industrial interest in which different manufacturing process and fibre volume have been considered. The identification of fibre distribution and orientation has been performed using mechanical tests on sawn samples. The model predictions have been compared to the global structural behaviour, and to the ductility demonstrated experimentally. The model could be qualified through comparison with conventional analytical engineering methods, taking into account the statistical variability. Improvement and additional developments have been identified.

Cementitious materials are used increasingly in the field of civil construction. Several experimental investigations are conducted to better understand the mechanisms controlling the behaviour of concrete and identify the factors responsible to ensure both durability and strength. But the so-called high performance concretes are likely to crack in the first hours after the initiation of the hydration reaction. The durability of concrete is thus affected. This constitutes a challenge for today. This research has been initiated with this perspective in mind. The term young age represents the first days, even the first few hours following the initiation of the reaction of hydration of cement grains. Currently, there is no procedure or experimental setups standardized to assess the behaviour of concrete from an early age. The Research Center on Concrete Infrastructures (CRIB) has developed an experimental device that simulates the behaviour of concrete under conditions of restricted deformation. The assembly, called the assembly for restrained shrinkage deformations (R2D2) was improved as part of this study to help examine the influence of temperature on the behaviour of concrete at early age. Several concrete were formulated and tested based on three types of cements. Five water /cement ratios were tested and several thermal profiles were applied. The influence of the water /cement ratio, the mineralogical composition of cement and the effect of the temperature on the concrete behaviour have been investigated in more depth.

Playing with masks : an exploration of craft and performanceKurz, Danielle Haskell 23 October 2014 (has links)
Collaboration between the playwright, director, designer and technicians is the backbone of theater. Costume designers, after discussion with the director and the other designers, rely on costume technicians to realize their ideas. The technician’s hands then realize the artistic vision. But what would the technicians try if there were no constraints? I am a technician, a craftsperson who is inspired not just by the play, but also by process, by methods. With every new technique I learn, I imagine the new ways it could be put to use, and the objects I would create if time and resources were not a factor. Imagined objects are seldom created. Once made, these objects exist without a performance, without a purpose. A costume not worn is an unfulfilled destiny. But maybe the pieces I want to make can be given a narrative after the act of construction, or during construction. I’m interested in exploring my ability to be a generative artist. How can my inspiration feed back into the theater community? Can a costume technician’s experimentation have a place in creating new theater? My thesis has two components, exploring my two interests. Those two interests are the creation of objects and the creation of a story. The first component, object creation, was an exploratory study of mask and headdress making techniques. I experimented with new techniques, such as 3-D printing, testing the limitations of new technology. The second component, story creation, was a collaborative process. My collaborator, Brian Oglesby, and I worked concurrently. Brian is a playwright, and as he wrote the play, I made the objects. Our processes mirrored each other. The narrative of the play incorporated the masks and headpieces I made. This project created a theater piece based on the experimentation of a costume technician, and presents a new way for future technicians to think about their work and to have their stories told. / text
