El periodista y escritor argentino Javier Sinay nos cuenta en una divertida entrevista los motivos e historias que conforman su obra "Camino al Este", un libro de crónicas de viaje donde los temas de amor y desamor se entremezclan con los paisajes geográficos y humanos más sorprendentes. Además, Sinay, invitado de honor de la Semana de Periodismo Literario de la UPC, nos habla de política, fútbol, música, y por supuesto de su gran pasión por la crónica policial.

La Semana de Periodismo Literario 2021 reúne una serie de conversatorios sobre periodismo, técnicas narrativas y no-ficción.

Esta tesis se propone lleva a cabo un análisis de gran alcance del periodismo literario escrito entre 1914 y 1918. Para ello, explora dieciséis obras escritas por autores británicos y norteamericanos que están situadas en una zona liminal desde un punto de vista físico, genérico, temporal y espacial. Los textos estudiados son: First from the Front (Harold Ashton 1914), With the Allies (Richard Harding Davis 1914), Fighting in Flanders (Alexander Powell 1914), The Soul of the War (Philip Gibbs 1915), Over There: War Scenes on the Western Front (Arnold Bennett 1915), France at War (Rudyard Kipling 1915), Kings, Queens and Pawns: An American Woman at the Front (Mary Roberts Rinehart 1915), A Journal of Impressions in Belgium (May Sinclair 1915), Fighting France: From Dunkerque to Belfort (Edith Wharton 1915), A Visit to Three Fronts: Glimpses of the British, Italian and French Lines (Arthur Conan Doyle 1916), With the British on the Somme (William Beach Thomas 1917), My Round of the War (Basil Clarke 1917), The Turning Point: The Battle of the Somme (Harry Perry Robinson 1917), The Glory of the Coming: What Mine Eyes Have Seen of Americans in Action in This Year of Grace and Allied Endeavor (Irvin S. Cobb 1918), And They Thought We Wouldn’t Fight (Floyd Gibbons 1918) y A Reporter at Armageddon: Letters from the Front and Behind the Lines of the Great War (Will Irwin 1918). El viaje físico que llevó a estos periodistas a la zona bélica y las características de dicho viaje permiten agrupar los textos que resultaron de estas expediciones bajo un mismo marco teórico-antropológico. Este marco teórico se basa en las teorías sobre liminalidad tal y como las articuló originalmente Arnold van Gennep en Los Ritos de Paso (1909), que fueron más tarde desarrolladas por Victor Turner. Además de clasificar, contextualizar y discutir críticamente un conjunto de obras que no han sido comparadas con anterioridad, este estudio da respuesta a cuatro preguntas fundamentales: en primer lugar, esta tesis investiga si los textos analizados responden a los marcos críticos con los que hemos aprendido a interpretar la guerra, sobre todo en lo referente al concepto de “el mito de la guerra” establecido por Samuel Hynes en su estudio A War Imagined. En segundo lugar, esta tesis evalúa si algunos de los cambios retóricos y estilísticos que Paul Fussell identificó en la literatura de los combatientes se pueden encontrar en los textos analizados. Asimismo, atiende al desarrollo cronológico de la guerra y evalúa si existe una variación en el modo en que ésta fue representada a medida que avanzó el conflicto. En tercer lugar, el estudio adopta una perspectiva comparatista, confrontando los textos escritos desde ambos lados del Atlántico, para determinar hasta qué punto la nacionalidad de los autores y la postura de sus países en un estadio concreto de la guerra afectó a su forma de escribir. Finalmente, se propone determinar si existen diferencias sustanciales en la forma en que hombres y mujeres concibieron y retrataron su experiencia liminal en el frente.

This doctoral thesis deals with the intellectual biography of the writer and journalist Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889, Figueres, 1956). It reconstructs the life and professional studies of the author, and the most important facets of his literature and journalism. In addition, it examines his literary texts. A special emphasis has been placed on the study of journalistic production of Brunet and on the analysis of the professional profile of the author. Examination and assessment of its production has been accurate, including a classification of the items and a comparison of his journalistic style with that of other contemporary authors, both Catalan (Josep Pla and Joseph M. de Sagarra), French (Charles Maurras and Léon Daudet) and English (GK Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc). The latter part of the work analysises the condition of "victor won" of Manuel Brunet after the Spanish Civil War, and how this author is an example of a whole generation of conservative Catalan nationalist witers who lived a difficult situation after the conflict. / Aquesta tesi doctoral aborda la biografia intel•lectual de l’escriptor i periodista Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889-Figueres 1956). Reconstrueix la trajectòria vital i professional de l’autor i estudia les facetes més rellevants de la seva producció literària i periodística. A més s’hi analitzen els seus textos literaris. S’ha posat especial èmfasi en l’estudi de la producció periodística de Brunet, així com en l’anàlisi del perfil professional de l’autor. L’examen i valoració de la seva producció ha estat detinguda, amb l’agrupació dels articles per àmbits temàtics i la comparació del seu estil amb el d’altres autors contemporanis, tant catalans (Josep Pla i Josep M. de Sagarra) com francesos (Charles Maurras i Léon Daudet) i anglesos (G. K. Chesterton i Hilaire Belloc). A l’última part del treball, s’aborda l’anàlisi de la condició de “vencedor vençut” de Manuel Brunet després de la guerra, i la forma com aquest autor és exemple de tota una generació d’escriptors catalanistes conservadors que van viure una situació complicada després del conflicte.

En el presente trabajo se realiza un análisis de características narrativas y técnicas de reporteo presentes en las crónicas de maestros de la Fundación Gabo (antes Fundación Gabriel García Márquez para el Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano). Los maestros seleccionados están antalogados en dos antologías de crónica (Antología de crónica latinoamericana actual, de Darío Jaramillo; y Mejor que ficción, de Jorge Carrión) y forman parte del movimiento del Nuevo Periodismo Latinoamericano. De este grupo de autores, se seleccionan crónicas publicadas en libros entre el 2000 y 2012. Para definir los indicadores literarios, se utiliza como referencia determinadas características narrativas desarrolladas por Mario Vargas Llosa en su obra Cartas a un joven novelista y para establecer los indicadores periodísticas se usa como referencia artículos desarrollados por cronistas representativos del Nuevo Periodismo Latinoamericano. A partir del análisis, se concluye que existen características narrativas y de reporteo similares entre el grupo de cronistas escogidos. / This thesis describes the narrative characteristics and reporting techniques of non-fiction texts written by Gabo Foundation’s teachers. Authors selected are part of two anthologies focused in New Journalism non-fiction texts (Antología de crónica latinoamericana actual, by Darío Jaramillo; y Mejor que ficción, by Jorge Carrión); and also are part of New Latin American Journalism movement. From this group of authors, this thesis choose non-fiction texts published between 2000 and 2012. To define the narrative characteristics, a book of Mario Vargas Llosa, named Cartas a un joven novelista, is used. To define the reporting techniques, articles of recognized authors of New Latin American Journalism are used. From the analysis, it is concluded that there are similar literary and journalistic characteristics among the group of selected authors. / Tesis

This doctoral thesis studies the relationship between journalism and literature in contexts in which freedom of speech is at risk. It takes as primary sources a variety of nonfiction, crónicas, literary journalism and testimonial novels published by Latin American authors in Spanish, from the 1950s to the 2000s. I propose the concept ‘documentary narratives’ to refer to all literary modes of discourse which are related, in diverse degrees, to a journalistic representation of reality. My corpus covers a wide range of topics such as social protests, dictatorships, civil wars, natural disaster, crime and migration. While scholars have focused on the rhetoric and history of this kind of narratives, my reading considers the real, face-to-face encounter between the journalist and others. I argue that the representation of these encounters influences the pact with the reader and challenges the notion of truthfulness. I contend that documentary narratives can serve as a tool for the transmission of knowledge and the production of public debate in societies marked by political and social instability. In a world overwhelmed by data production and immersed in violent acts against those to be considered ‘Others’, I argue that storytelling is still an essential form of communication among individuals, classes and cultures. Contrary to the authors’s intentions of documenting others’ lives, I conclude that these stories offer an (interrupted) account of oneself, that is, the account of a contemporary storyteller pursuing a rarely fulfilled desire of getting to know the Other truly. The thesis has two appendices. Appendix 1 showcases archival material that support some of my arguments. Appendix 2 includes the transcripts of the interviews that I conducted with eight Latin American authors: Elena Poniatowska, Leila Guerriero, Cristian Alarcón, Arturo Fontaine, Santiago Roncagliolo, Francisco Goldman, Martín Caparrós, and Juan Villoro.
