The Evaluation of Attitudes towards Individuals with Mental Illness among Counselors in Training

Negative attitudes and stigma associated with mental illness have a profound impact on individuals who experience them. Researchers have defined stigma as the attribution of a deviant characteristic to members of a particular group. Persons with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) face many difficulties that impact their full participation in social life. Although attitudinal reactions to individuals with SPMI have improved considerably over the last few decades, there are still areas for improvement. Limited research has been conducted to evaluate attitudes and stigma associated with individuals with SPMI among human service professionals-in-training (HSPs). For this study HSPs were defined as individuals entering into social service, mental health, and substance abuse professions. Further, there have only been a few published studies in attitude research that utilized randomized vignettes portraying individuals with two different mental health diagnoses. Data collection occurred in counselor education and similar programs at many universities. A total of 79 participants (20 males and 58 females) took part in this study. Recruitment efforts reached HSPs at 27 universities throughout the contiguous United States. For this study, participants were asked to respond to self-report surveys and to one of two written vignettes to quantify their attitudes toward the individuals depicted in them. The two vignettes described an individual with a mental illness and differed in the diagnosis attributed to the individual: schizophrenia spectrum disorder in one vignette and generalized anxiety disorder in the other vignette. Results indicated that although there were slight mean differences between the two groups of participants, the differences were not statically significant, t (77) = 0.63, p =53. The Attribution Questionnaire-27 (AQ-27; Corrigan, 2012) gathered overall attitudes towards mental illness. The Mental Health Provider Stigma Inventory (MHPSI; Kennedy, Abell, & Mennicke, 2014) was used to collect data on attitudes, behaviors, and social pressure impacting stigma towards individuals who have SPMI. Data collected with these two scales yielded evidence to indicate that participants held stigmatizing attitudes towards individuals with SPMI. Data gathered suggested that graduate students in rehabilitation counselor education programs expressed fewer stigmatizing attitudes than students from other programs. This result was seen across both measures. Data were collected on frequency of contact with persons with mental illness to evaluate the association between contact frequency and knowledge of mental illness and negative attitudes. Demographic data gathered included gender, age, professional training, and number of years of work experience in a counseling-related role. Further, a hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine which order of predictors were statistically significant to the outcome measure. Prior literature suggest that prior contact and familiarity scores playing a more important role in predicting the outcome variable (AQ-27) then the demographic information. The first model was statistically significant F(6,72) =3.64, p= .003 and explained 23% of the variance in the dependent variable (AQ-27 total scores). After the input of these demographic factors the second step included LOF and SADP- PCF-R scores. After entry of the second step the overall variance was 28%. The second model was statically significant F(8,70) = 3.39 p = 002 and explained an additional 4% variance in the model. In the final adjusted model, four out of the seven predictor variables were statistically significant. A small pilot study consisting of rehabilitation counseling professionals was used to develop the methodologies for this study. The primary limitation of the primary study was the sample size. Further details of the methodology used and limitations of this particular study will be described in subsequent chapters. Implications of this study and suggested future research are proposed.

Persistent Places in the Late Archaic Landscape / A GIS-based Case Study of CRM Sites in the Lower Grand River Area, Ontario

My aim in this study is to identify Late Archaic persistent places—places of continued importance throughout the long-term occupation of a region—within the lower Grand River Area of what is now southern Ontario. I accomplish this through the use of kernel density estimation applied to datasets containing the locations of Late Archaic (4000-2800 RCYBP) sites within this study area which were discovered through cultural resource management (CRM) survey and excavation. Areas identified as persistent places were investigated with regard to landscape features and environmental affordances that could have structured their consistent re-use throughout the Late Archaic, with particular attention paid to the hypothesis that persistent places may have developed around the riverine spawning grounds of spring-spawning fish. Two places with particularly intense concentrations of diagnostic materials dating to successive periods of the Late Archaic were identified: one surrounding Seneca Creek near Caledonia, and one near D’Aubigny Creek south of Brantford. The results show that the persistent use of these places would likely have been structured by the presence of landscape features which would have made these areas particularly rich in many different seasonal resources during the Late Archaic. Perhaps most significantly, both areas are located in close proximity to areas identified as walleye spawning grounds. The contributions of this thesis include the synthesis of the results of many years of CRM survey of the Grand River Area, evidence for the existence of Late Archaic riverine fishing sites related to the spawning runs of walleye, and an improved understanding of Late Archaic subsistence-settlement systems. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA) / Lay Abstract: My aim in this study is to identify persistent places—places of continued importance throughout the long-term occupation of a region—within the lower Grand River Area of what is now southern Ontario during a period known as the Late Archaic (ca. 2500 B.C.- ca. 1000 B.C). This was accomplished using GIS spatial analysis of data produced through commercial archaeological assessments. As a result of this analysis, I identified two persistent places within the study area: one near D’Aubigny Creek south of Brantford, and one surrounding Seneca Creek near Caledonia. I also investigated the environments surrounding these places to determine what may have made them continuously appealing for over a millennium. Both areas were found to contain environmental features that would have likely made them particularly resource-rich and appealing to hunter-gatherers. One of the most important findings was that both areas are in close proximity to walleye spawning grounds.

The Effects of Looping on the Academic Achievement of Elementary School Students.

The purpose of this study was to compare the academic achievement of students in looping programs from school systems in East Tennessee to their peers in traditional one-year instructional programs. Looping is defined as any program design that perpetuates a cohesive student group with the same teacher for more than one year. The study included all students who had completed fourth grade in 2001 at every school in East Tennessee that implemented a third/fourth grade looping design. Student scores reported for 1999, 2000, and 2001 on the TerraNova Standardized Achievement Test were obtained from individual student records. Comparisons were made on the Total Reading, Total Language, Total Math, and Total Battery scores. Differences between program design groups (looping and traditional) on "pre-looping" second grade (1999) scores were assessed using t-tests for two independent groups. Two-way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), was used to examine the main effects of program design and student gender on 2000 and 2001 test scores, along with program design x gender interactions, while controlling for prior test score differences. The findings suggested that students in looping classrooms benefited academically by remaining with the same teacher and classmates for two successive years. Significant main effects were detected for program design in first year comparisons, as indicated by significantly higher scores on all four subtests. Scores for those in the looping classrooms remained significantly higher in second year comparisons on each subtest, except Total Language, even after controlling for third grade (2000) test scores. Significant main effects for gender were detected after the first year of participation in each design. This included significantly higher Total Language and Total Battery scores for female participants. No significant differences by gender were detected when scores were compared on the four subtests at the end of the two-year cycle. A program design x gender interaction was detected at the end of the first year. This interaction showed that female participants in looping classrooms showed higher Total Math achievement. A program design x gender interaction also occurred after the second year where male participants in the looping classrooms obtained higher Total Language scores.

The Seed Ecology of Rare and Endangered Gibbens' Beardtongue (Penstemon gibbensii) and Blowout Penstemon (Penstemon haydenii)

Penstemon gibbensii and Penstemon haydenii are two rare, perennial forbs inhabiting remote areas of the western United States. P. gibbensii is listed as a sensitive species by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming (Heidel, 2009). P. haydenii was designated as Endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1987 (Heidel, 2012). This thesis research was geared toward helping land managers in their efforts to protect and rehabilitate these species by providing understanding on different aspects of their seed ecology. My first study was a laboratory experiment performed on P. gibbensii and P. haydenii seed germination response to moist chilling and dry after-ripening. Wild harvested seeds were subjected to moist chilling at 2-4 °C for 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks and held in dry storage for approximately 2 years to determine effective methods for breaking primary dormancy. P. gibbensii seed germination increased consistently with increased length of chilling up to 16 weeks and exhibited habitat-correlated variation in this response. P. haydenii seed germination increased from 1 to 100% germination with 4 weeks of chilling. P. haydenii germination was greatest (96%) when incubated under a cool, diurnally-fluctuating temperature regime (10-20 °C) and responded positively to dry storage, increasing germination from 0 to 15%. My second study was an in situ field study designed to characterize the active seed bank of P. haydenii. We set up a transect line across a P. haydenii population and measured the number of seeds entering the seed bank, lost to predation post-dispersal, and persisting in the seed bank. P. haydenii does not appear to form an ecologically significant seed bank. Approximately 140 seeds/ 10m2 could potentially enter the seed bank but only 1 seed in the upper 10cm of sand persisted. Heavy post-dispersal insect predation resulted in a decrease in viability of nearly 30% in exposed P. haydenii seeds after just 12 hours. My third study explored the effects of burial by sand on P. haydenii. Wild-harvested seeds were planted in pots at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10cm deep in sand and incubated at 10-20 °C. Seed germination and mortality and seedling emergence were measured. The response of dormant seeds to post-burial incubation was determined. Burial depth decreased seedling emergence and seed germination. Shallow burial appears to induce secondary dormancy for seeds that don't germinate quickly, whereas deep burial appears to impose enforced dormancy in burial.

[pt] Pesquisas atuais evidenciam que diversos materiais com aplicação nas indústrias automotiva, ferroviária, aeronáutica e aeroespacial não apresentam um limite de fadiga. Porém, em torno de 1860 Wohler propôs a curva S-N (tensão - número de ciclos), admitindo um conceito que há um limite de fadiga, estipulado na época como 1E5 ciclos e considerado como vida infinita em fadiga. Contudo, com os avanços tecnológicos, inúmeros componentes falham na condição de vida infinita, de maneira contrária ao proposto por Wöhler. Atualmente, se considera 3 regimes distintos de fadiga: fadiga de baixo ciclo, fadiga de alto ciclo e fadiga de altíssimo ciclo. Nas indústrias automotivas há um extensivo uso de chapas de aço para a fabricação de componentes de geometria complexa. Neste contexto, o aço interstitial free (IF – aços com baixa quantidade de átomos intersticiais), é um dos materiais de largo emprego, em função da sua excelente estampabilidade. O aço IF apresenta uma microestrutura ferrítica com uma baixíssima quantidade de elementos intersticiais. Interstícios com carbono e nitrogênio são estabilizados pelo titânio (Ti) ou nióbio (Nb) formando frações de volume extremamente pequenas na matriz ferrítica de carbetos e nitretos. O trabalho baseia-se na investigação experimental dos danos microestruturais no aço IF após carregamentos cíclicos de longa duração. Amostras do aço IF estabilizado pelo Ti foram submetidas a ensaios ultrassônicos de fadiga com carregamentos superiores a 1E7 ciclos. Se observou o aparecimento de danos microestruturais (persistent slip bands, PSB s) após determinado número de ciclos. Por meio de análise no microscópio ótico foi estimado que 97,76 por cento da vida em fadiga foi destinado para nucleação de trinca enquanto 2,23 por cento para a propagação de trinca. Houve o projeto de um novo corpo de prova para a máquina de fadiga de altíssimo, com o intuito de acompanha a superfície do material durante os ensaios. É proposto a equação da curva S-N fadiga de altíssimo ciclo com os dados extraídos dos testes. In this context, interstitial free steel (IF steel) is one of the widely used materials, due to its excellent stampability. IF steel has a ferritic microstructure with a very low amount of interstitial elements. Interstices with carbon and nitrogen are stabilized by titanium (Ti) or niobium (Nb) forming extremely small volume fractions in the ferritic matrix of carbides and nitrides. The work is based on the experimental investigation of microstructural damage in IF steel after long-term cyclic loading. Samples of Ti-stabilized IF steel were subjected to ultrasonic fatigue tests with loads greater than 1E7 cycles. It was observed the arising of microstructural damage (persistent slip bands, PSB s) after a certain number of cycles. By means of image analysis in the optical microscope, it was estimated that 97.76 percent of the fatigue life was destined for crack nucleation while 2.23 percent for crack propagation in very high cycle fatigue regime. There was the project of a new specimen for the very high fatigue machine, in order to accompany the surface of the material during the tests. It is proposed the equation of the curve S-N fatigue of very high cycle os with data extracted from the tests. Finally, a correction factor is suggested in the plastic shear deformation equation in PSB s based on experimental data.

Statistical Learning and Analysis on Homology-Based Features / Statistisk analys och maskininlärning med homologibaserad data

Stable rank has recently been proposed as an invariant to encode the result of persistent homology, a method used in topological data analysis. In this thesis we develop methods for statistical analysis as well as machine learning methods based on stable rank. As stable rank may be viewed as a mapping to a Hilbert space, a kernel can be constructed from the inner product in this space. First, we investigate this kernel in the context of kernel learning methods such as support-vector machines. Next, using the theory of kernel embedding of probability distributions, we give a statistical treatment of the kernel by showing some of its properties and develop a two-sample hypothesis test based on the kernel. As an alternative approach, a mapping to a Euclidean space with learnable parameters can be conceived, serving as an input layer to a neural network. The developed methods are first evaluated on synthetic data. Then the two-sample hypothesis test is applied on the OASIS open access brain imaging dataset. Finally a graph classification task is performed on a dataset collected from Reddit. / Stable rank har föreslagits som en sammanfattning på datanivå av resultatet av persistent homology, en metod inom topologisk dataanalys. I detta examensarbete utvecklar vi metoder inom statistisk analys och maskininlärning baserade på stable rank. Eftersom stable rank kan ses som en avbildning i ett Hilbertrum kan en kärna konstrueras från inre produkten i detta rum. Först undersöker vi denna kärnas egenskaper när den används inom ramen för maskininlärningsmetoder som stödvektormaskin (SVM). Därefter, med grund i teorin för inbäddning av sannolikhetsfördelningar i reproducing kernel Hilbertrum, undersöker vi hur kärnan kan användas för att utveckla ett test för statistisk hypotesprövning. Slutligen, som ett alternativ till metoder baserade på kärnor, utvecklas en avbildning i ett euklidiskt rum med optimerbara parametrar, som kan användas som ett ingångslager i ett neuralt nätverk. Metoderna utvärderas först på syntetisk data. Vidare utförs ett statistiskt test på OASIS, ett öppet dataset inom neuroradiologi.
