A Person-Centred Analysis of Triadic Acculturation Gaps in Chinese Canadian Immigrant Families

Li, Jie 22 September 2022 (has links)
Past research on the impacts of acculturation gaps among immigrant family members has yielded inconclusive results potentially due to inconsistent analytical methods, lack of consideration of family processes, and discrepant conceptualizations of acculturation. With a sample of 161 Chinese Canadian immigrant families, the current study adopted a person-centred approach with a family lens to examine the nature of acculturation gaps and how these gaps were associated with family functioning and individual psychological adjustment. Latent profile analyses were utilized to generate mother-father-child acculturation profiles based on individual reports of acculturation (in the domains of cultural identity and value, separately) from mothers, fathers, and children in the same family. The results identified five family acculturation profiles in the identity domain and four family acculturation profiles in the value domain. Parents’ cultural disengagement was linked to the most positive psychological wellbeing and family relationships for all family members. The expected acculturation gaps in the Canadian host dimension were not found to be associated with the most depressive symptoms or family conflicts, suggesting that acculturation gaps where adolescents were more acculturated to the host culture than their parents may be normative in immigrant families and thus not linked to youth maladjustment. In contrast, the reversed acculturation gaps in the host dimension and the expected acculturation gaps in the heritage dimension were consistently found to be associated with family conflicts and individual psychological distress. The results also revealed an undifferentiated acculturation style that was not outlined in Berry’s model. An undifferentiated style was characterized by average acculturation levels on both the heritage and host dimensions, and it was the most prevalent individual acculturation style in the identity domain and the second most prevalent style in the value domain. Directions for future research and the benefits of using a person-centered approach in the research of acculturation gaps are discussed. / Graduate / 2023-09-06

Distriktssköterskors upplevelser och erfarenheter av patientundervisning till personer med diabetes – utifrån ett personcentrerat förhållningssätt : En kvalitativ studie / District nurses’ perceptions and experiences of patient education for people with diabetes – based on a person-centered approach : A qualitative study

Ideborg, Lina, Thorzander, Malin January 2016 (has links)
Aim: The aim of the study was to describe district nurses´ perceptions and experiences of patient education for patients with diabetes and to identify aspects that can be related to a person-centered approach. Methods: Descriptive design with qualitative approach with semi structured interviews were used for data collection. In the selection process was strategically selection used. Nine interviews were conducted with district nurses at six different medical centers in central Sweden. In the analysis used qualitative content analysis. Results: District nurses wanted more knowledge about immigrants' eating and exercise habits. District nurses expressed that it was fun and exciting with patient education and that it was important that they were engaged. District nurses wanted to work more in teams and they felt they had too little time set aside for patient education. They felt that they were working person-centered but it was more difficult to work person centered at group education than private education. Conclusion: District nurses should have good knowledge of cultural differences in patients with diabetes. District nurses perceive lack of time and resources and want more cooperate in teams. It is important with a person-centered approach, where district nurses based on the individual person. A district nurse who is engaged and enjoy their work can help dealing with the increased pressure and workload.

The Role of a Peer-Led Academic Intervention in College Students' Development of Self-Regulated Learning: A Person-Centered Approach

Jeong, Soojeong 01 December 2019 (has links)
Due to its unsupervised nature, undergraduate education requires students to manage their own learning. They need to use self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies in order to achieve academic success. However, college students often have insufficient regulatory skills and strategies, suggesting the need for substantive and practical support. Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a well-recognized academic intervention that utilizes peer-led study groups for difficult college courses, through which students can develop their SRL abilities. This study focuses on the role of the SI program in college students’ development of SRL from a person-centered perspective. First, this study examines the heterogeneous effects of the SI intervention on students’ development of SRL by combining latent profile modeling and propensity score matching. Second, it explores the changes in student SRL profiles over the intervention period and determines factors affecting the prediction of such changes using latent transition modeling. Results identify three distinct student profiles: competent regulator, self-confident regulator, and goal-oriented regulator. Within the competent regulator profile, both SI and non-SI attendees’ overall SRL scores significantly decreased over time, though non- SI attendees showed a greater downturn. For the self-confident regulator profile, only SI attendees’ overall SRL scores increased. Both SI and non-SI attendees in the goal-oriented regulator profile had small decreases in scores, which were not statistically significant. Regarding students’ longitudinal transitions between SRL profiles, students in the most desirable profile (competent regulator) remained most stable over time. Students’ SRL in the goal-oriented regulator profile was most malleable in a positive way; approximately 40% of these students moved into the competent regulator profile. In addition, students whose decision to attend the SI sessions was more mastery-oriented tended to fall into more positive transition groups. Furthermore, students whose levels of self-confidence in learning, critical thinking skills, and group work skills increased as a result of their participation in SI sessions were more likely to become members of more positive transition groups. The findings of this study extend previous work by longitudinally examining individual differences in college students’ SRL development. They also provide significant implications for the future design of more targeted interventions.

It intends to contribute to a discussion of ethics in clinical practice, with reference to the radical ethics of Emmanuel Levinas and the Person-Centered Psychotherapy. The overall goal is to understand the possibilities of opening to radical alterity in the therapeutic relationship from discourses of person-centered psychotherapists about their clinical practice. Thus, we performed semi-structured interviews with five psychotherapists about the unexpected experiences in their clinical practice. The interpretation of the discourses was inspired in Derrida's hermeneutics, focusing on how the idea of deconstruction was proposed, allowing the arising of the difference in speech itself. In the deconstruction of the discourses we get closer to potential areas of openness to otherness in the therapeutic relationship, talking about the therapist vulnerability and responsibility against the unexpected. In a welcoming position the therapist would have to allow the use of his sensitivity and the intuition in their attendance, being with the client in its suffering, from the facilitative attitudes as enablers of a understanding of the client as an enigma.

Alexandre Trzan-Ávila 26 March 2013 (has links)
This dissertation is to develop a historical object of emergence of Person Centred Approach (PCA) in Brazil, with special observance to the Rio-São Paulo in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970. Sjuksköterskans personcentrerade förhållningssätt i omhändertagandet av vuxna patienter på akutmottagningen : En litteraturstudie utifrån sjuksköterskans och patientens perspektiv / Nurses’ person- centred approach in care of adult patients in the emergency department : A literature study from a nurse and a patient perspective

Berisha, Mimoza, Tolinsson, Wilma January 2021 (has links)
Background: Care in the emergency department is usually characterized by high demands for a fast and efficient treatment, where the meeting between nurse and patient is short. Looking beyond the patient´s illness and highlighting the patient's individual needs, resources and expectations is what characterizes a person- centered approach. Purpose: To highlight nurses' person-centered approach in care of adult patients in the emergency department. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature study based on nine result articles. Content analyses were used as an analyzing method. Results: Both patients and nurses experienced shortcomings related to person-centered care in an emergency department. The results were divided into two main categories: Patient’s perspective of a person-centered approach and Nurse’s perspective of a person-centered approach. Conclusion: Patients felt that the information and communication was a very important part in nursing care. When communication was present and patients well informed, the patient´s participation increased. The nurses experienced of lack of time was a major factor to the lack of communication in the emergency department.

Přístup zaměřený na člověka ve výzkumu osobnosti a predikce chování v online prostředí / Person-centered approach in personality research and prediction of online environment behavior

Fousková, Petra January 2021 (has links)
The presented diploma thesis focuses on the person-centered approach in personality research and on the possibilities of predicting behavior in the online environment. The theoretical part defines different approaches to personality descriptions, with a special focus on the person-centered approach, variable-centered approach, and person-specific approach. The outputs of thematically relevant research studies are also summarized here. The empirical part describes the exploratory research, which aimed to examine the possibility of predicting the personality type of LinkedIn users in the context of the person-centered approach, based on an analysis of their profile and behavior associated with this professional social network. The standardized HEXACO-PI-R and 4Elements Personality Inventory® questionnaires were used in the research. Cluster analysis was performed on data from 118 participants who filled out the 4Elements Personality Inventory®. Based on that, 4 clusters that describes 52,2 % of the variance were formed. Furthermore, using multinomial logistic regression, two models predicting the probability of a person belonging to a certain cluster based on information about predictors were created. Another cluster analysis was performed on the data from HEXACO-PI-R, which created 6 clusters that...
