Analysis of the IEEE 802.15.4a ultra wideband physical layer through wireless sensor network simulations in OMNET++

Alberts, Marthinus 10 March 2011 (has links)
Wireless Sensor Networks are the main representative of pervasive computing in large-scale physical environments. These networks consist of a large number of small, wireless devices embedded in the physical world to be used for surveillance, environmental monitoring or other data capture, processing and transfer applications. Ultra wideband has emerged as one of the newest and most promising concepts for wireless technology. Considering all its advantages it seems a likely communication technology candidate for future wireless sensor networks. This paper considers the viability of ultra wideband technology in wireless sensor networks by employing an IEEE 802.15.4a low-rate ultra wideband physical layer model in the OMNET++ simulation environment. An elaborate investigation into the inner workings of the IEEE 802.15.4a UWB physical layer is performed. Simulation experiments are used to provide a detailed analysis of the performance of the IEEE 802.15.4a UWB physical layer over several communication distances. A proposal for a cognitive, adaptive communication approach to optimize for speed and distance is also presented. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / unrestricted

Network Formation and Routing for Multi-hop Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks

Zhang, Xin 17 May 2006 (has links)
An energy-aware on-demand Bluetooth scatternet formation and routing protocol taking into account network architecture and traffic pattern is proposed. The scatternet formation protocol is able to cope with multiple sources initiating traffic simultaneously as well as prolong network lifetime. A modified Inquiry scheme using extended ID packet is introduced for fast device discovery and power efficient propagation of route request messages with low delay. A mechanism employing POLL packets in Page processes is proposed to transfer scatternet formation and route reply information without extra overhead. In addition, the energy aware forwarding nodes selection scheme is based on local information and results in more uniform network resource utilization and improved network lifetime. Simulation results show that this protocol can provide scatternet formation with reasonable delay and with good load balance which results in prolonged network lifetime for Bluetooth-based wireless sensor networks. In this research, a metric-based scatternet formation algorithm for the Bluetooth-based sensor motes is presented. It optimizes the Bluetooth network formation from the hop distance and link quality perspectives. In addition, a smart repair mechanism is proposed to deal with link/node failure and recover the network connectivity promptly with low overhead. The experiments with the Intel Mote platform demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimizations. This research also investigates the scalability of ad hoc routing protocols in very large-scale wireless ad hoc networks. A comprehensive simulation study is conducted of the performance of an on-demand routing protocol on a very large-scale, with as many as 50,000 nodes in the network. The scalability analysis is addressed based on various network sizes, node density, traffic load, and mobility. The reasons for packet loss are analyzed and categorized at each network layer. Based on the observations, we observe the effect of the parameter selection and try to exhaust the scalability boundary of the on-demand routing protocol for wireless ad hoc networks.

Low-power CMOS front-ends for wireless personal area networks

Perumana, Bevin George 30 October 2007 (has links)
The potential of implementing subthreshold radio frequency circuits in deep sub-micron CMOS technology was investigated for developing low-power front-ends for wireless personal area network (WPAN) applications. It was found that the higher transconductance to bias current ratio in weak inversion could be exploited in developing low-power wireless front-ends, if circuit techniques are employed to mitigate the higher device noise in subthreshold region. The first fully integrated subthreshold low noise amplifier was demonstrated in the GHz frequency range requiring only 260 μW of power consumption. Novel subthreshold variable gain stages and down-conversion mixers were developed. A 2.4 GHz receiver, consuming 540 μW of power, was implemented using a new subthreshold mixer by replacing the conventional active low noise amplifier by a series-resonant passive network that provides both input matching and voltage amplification. The first fully monolithic subthreshold CMOS receiver was also implemented with integrated subthreshold quadrature LO (Local Oscillator) chain for 2.4 GHz WPAN applications. Subthreshold operation, passive voltage amplification, and various low-power circuit techniques such as current reuse, stacking, and differential cross coupling were combined to lower the total power consumption to 2.6 mW. Extremely compact resistive feedback CMOS low noise amplifiers were presented as a cost-effective alternative to narrow band LNAs using high-Q inductors. Techniques to improve linearity and reduce power consumption were presented. The combination of high linearity, low noise figure, high broadband gain, extremely small die area and low power consumption made the proposed LNA architecture a compelling choice for many wireless applications.

Wireless personal area networks (WPANs), are a mobile short range wireless network, with typical range of 10 meters, where the user is the center. The general usage scenario is where devices within the WPANs range communicate directly to each other or with resources from the external world (outside the WPAN) through access points which offer routing service. WPANs have been gaining attention over the last few years mainly due the emergence and popularization of novel wireless communication technologies that enable this kind of network, notably Bluetooth. In fact, the development of WPANs is closely related to the development of Bluetooth, which has been used as starting point to several studies and prototypes in this field. As the user mobility is the main feature of WPANs, a number of questions arise when developing applications targeted to this new paradigm. One of the most important refers to the handoff management. Handoff is the process through which network connections, routes, and states associated to services in course are seamlessly transferred between access points as the user moves through their coverage areas. Despite its alignment with the WPAN's network model, Bluetooth has no facilities for aiding the management of handoffs besides its standard operations for querying nearby devices and connect to them, inquiry and paging respectively. Moreover, the data traffic of these operations has priority over user applications' data traffic. This property has special impact for a particular kind of application: those that require real-time data transfer, such as streaming applications. When the wireless channel is unavailable for data transfers, with temporary connection loss with access points during handoffs, or interface preemption for the inquiry and paging operations, real-time applications have their performance compromised in consequence of violation of temporal requirements. In this work, a protocol for managing handoffs in Bluetooth-based WPANs is presented. The protocol is focused on the use of applications that demand real-time data transfers. The adequacy of the protocol to this kind of application is analyzed through a case study for an audio streaming application. The protocol is designed focusing on the limitations of potential client devices (small portable devices with limited computational power, memory, bandwidth, battery life, etc). Therefore, all the handoff management operations are transferred to access points. There is no need of signaling or any other kind of coordination or message exchange between access points and mobile devices during handoffs. Due to the use of standardized Bluetooth operations, any programmable device with a standard complaint Bluetooth interface can be used without changes on any underlying software layer, such as the Bluetooth stack. It is also presented a formal modelling and validation of the protocol to ensure it behaves according to its specification. The formal model is important to understand the protocol, unanbiguous documentation, and to easy the validation of changes and extension by automatic simulation and proof of properties.

Brendel, Friederike Cornelia 23 January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation is related to the search for an economically sustainable solutionfor high data rate (several Gbps to several tens of Gbps) personal area networksoperating in the millimeter-wave region around 60 GHz. If such networks supplya large number of users, they need to encompass a multitude of antenna pointsin order to assure wireless access to the network. With the aim of reducing thecost of an antenna module, the networks should at best provide quasi "readyto-radiate" signals to the modules, i.e. at millimeter-wave carrier frequencies. Thanks to their low transmission loss and their high bandwidth, optical fiber distributionarchitectures represent a promising solution. The technique is referredto as the so-called "radio-over-fiber" approach whereby the analog radio signalwill be transported to the access point by an optical wave. The challenge herebyis the generation and modulation of an optical signal by a millimeter-wave radiosignal using preferably cost-efficient system components. The technique proposedherein is based on the use of mode-locked laser diodes which can generatesignals at very high frequencies under the condition of continuous current supply.Mode-locked laser diodes can be modulated both directly and externally. Thediodes employed in this work are based on so-called quantum dots (or quantumdashes); these are material structures which are themselves still subject to intensivephysical research. Signals at millimeter-wave frequencies (around 60 GHz)can easily be generated by such lasers. However, their frequency and phase stabilityis as yet limited. In the context of radio-over-fiber communication systems, these structures have not yet been studied in detail. In the course of this dissertation, several aspects are considered. A first systemstudy treats the basic properties of a system built from this type of laser source(available signal power, system noise figure, linearity etc.). A second study isdevoted to an investigation of propagation effects like dispersion, which considerablyinfluence the attainable transmission distances. An essential result of bothstudies is the importance of limiting the laser spectrum to a small number of lasermodes for an optimization of link gain, generated RF power, and system noisefigure. A third study deals with the limited frequency and phase stability whichturn out to be critical factors for transmission quality. The study of several generationsof quantum dot/dash lasers has revealed that the problems of frequencyand phase noise persist and cannot be solved using classical techniques involvinge.g. conventional phase-locked loops. In this dissertation, a solution is presentedwhich not only allows a more precise adjustment of the laser frequency (precisionin the order of Hz to kHz) than that given by the manufacturing process of thelaser (precision in the order of GHz), but also enables a stabilization of frequencyand phase.

Design, analysis and simulations of medium access control protocols for high and low data rate applications

Goratti, L. (Leonardo) 28 November 2011 (has links)
Abstract The past two decades have witnessed an unprecedented proliferation of mobile devices equipped with extremely innovative wireless technologies. Short range networks, such as wireless personal area networks (WPANs), wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and wireless body area networks (WBANs) have been defined and researched to deliver high speed home connectivity, environment and health monitoring. This thesis tackles design, analysis and simulation of medium access control (MAC) protocols tailored for short range networks. These have in common the use of battery operated devices but also certain design challenges connected with MAC protocols are common upon selecting the physical layer technology. Ultra wideband (UWB) technology and 60 GHz technology (which is referred to also as millimeter wave communications) are two valid examples of the wireless revolution of the past decade. Several existing standards, such as IEEE 802.15.3, ECMA-368, IEEE 802.15.4 and its amendment IEEE 802.15.4a, are considered in this thesis for MAC analysis in conjunction with UWB technology. With regard to millimeter wave communications the characteristics of the IEEE 802.15.3c standard are taken into account. Apart for the IEEE 802.15.3c all the MAC protocols have been modeled in the network simulator Opnet. One contribution of this thesis is to produce an innovative and in-depth analysis of the management aspects (e.g. ECMA-368 distributed beaconing) stemming from the above mentioned standards by means of analytical and simulation models. This study approach allows selecting the MAC features suitable for the applications and the technologies of interest. The key performance metric used to analyze all the protocols is energy efficiency, but also throughput is investigated. Another contribution brought by this thesis consists in the innovative way of studying slotted-based MAC protocols as an integrated concept connected with the type of network, the type of application and the selected physical technologies. This thesis also shows MAC performance in conjunction with UWB when false alarm, miss-detection and receiver capture (capture is modeled by means of an existing interference model) are taken into consideration. Most of the unrealistic, though common, assumptions in MAC analysis are removed and the performance of selected medical applications is evaluated through Opnet simulations. The well known binary exponential backoff is analyzed with an innovative though simplified one-dimensional Markov chain approach in the context of directional MAC for 60 GHz communications. As shown in the remainder of this thesis, the simplification introduced does not hinder the accuracy of the results, but rather allows accounting even for a finite number of retransmissions with a simple chain extension. / Tiivistelmä Kahden viime vuosikymmenen aikana innovatiivisella langattomalla tekniikalla varustettujen viestintälaiteiden määrä on kasvanut räjähdysmäisesti.

Low Power Receiver Architecture And Algorithms For Low Data Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks

Dwivedi, Satyam 12 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Sensor nodes in a sensor network is power constrained. Transceiver electronics of a node in sensor network consume a good share of total power consumed in the node. The thesis proposes receiver architecture and algorithms which reduces power consumption of the receiver. The work in the thesis ranges from designing low power architecture of the receiver to experimentally verifying the functioning of the receiver. Concepts proposed in the thesis are: Low power adaptive architecture :-A baseband digital receiver design is proposed which changes its sampling frequency and bit-width based on interference detection and SNR estimation. The approach is based on Look-up-table (LUT) in the digital section of the receiver. Interference detector and SNR estimator has been proposed which suits this approach. Settings of different sections of digital receiver changes as sampling frequency and bit-width varies. But, this change in settings ensures that the desired BER is achieved. Overall, the receiver reduces amount of processing when conditions are benign and does more processing when conditions are not favorable. It is shown that the power consumption by the digital baseband can be reduced by 85% (7 times) when there is no interference and SNR is high. Thus the proposed design meets our requirement of low power hardware. The design is coded in Verilog HDL and power and area estimation is done using Synopsys tools. Faster Simulation Methodologies :-Usually physical layer simulations are done on baseband equivalent model of the signal in the receiver chain. Simulating Physical layer algorithms on bandpass signals for BER evaluation is very time consuming. We need to do the bandpass simulations to capture the effect of quantization on bandpass signal in the receiver. We have developed a variance measuring simulation methodology for faster simulation which reduces simulation time by a factor of 10. Low power, Low area, Non-coherent, Non-data-aided joint tracking and acquisition algorithm :-Correlation is a very popular function used particularly in synchronization algorithms in the receivers. But correlation requires usage of multipliers. Multipliers are area and power consuming blocks. A very low power and low area joint tracking and acquisition algorithm is developed. The algorithm does not use any multiplier to synchronize. Even it avoids squaring and adding the signals to achieve non-coherency. Beside the algorithm is non-data-aided as well and does not require ROM to store the sequence. The Algorithm saves area/power of existing similar algorithms by 90%. Experimental setup for performance evaluation of the receiver :-The developed baseband architecture and algorithms are experimentally verified on a wireless test setup. Wireless test setup consists of FPGA board, VSGs, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum analyzer and a discrete component RF board. Packet error and packet loss measurement is done by varying channel conditions. Many practical and interesting issues dealing with wireless test setup infrastructure were encountered and resolved.
